HEALTH
Sleep Baby, Sleep! Whether you have a newborn, toddler or older child, sleep is vitally important for them. According to the National Sleep Foundation, lack of sleep can have an impact on a child’s mental and physical development. Claire Winter takes a look at some common sleep issues and how you can deal with them.
or dad comes home at bedtime. Keep it calm and boring.” For more great and practical advice visit www.sarahbeeson. co.uk to help you get your baby to sleep. Our favourite part of getting Sirius (our son) to fall asleep is reading a bedtime story - for us it works beautifully.’ (Families Beds Editor, Michéllin)
Night Waking Night waking is one of the most common sleep issues with which parents struggle from birth right the way through childhood, according to Sarah OckwellSmith, mother of four and author of the bestselling 'The Gentle Sleep Book.’ “Night waking, however, is normal and natural, not just for babies, toddlers and older children, but for adults too. Nobody 'sleeps through the night,’ we all sleep in several cycles (90 minutes for adults and 45 minutes for babies). Night waking tends to occur in the transition between one sleep cycle and the next. As adults, we can 'self-soothe’ any problems that wake us when transitioning (e.g. if we’re uncomfortable,
in pain, cold, hot, thirsty or are struggling with anxiety or fear from a nightmare). Babies and toddlers are physiologically and psychologically incapable of selfsoothing (you can’t teach them to self-settle - you can only train them to not call out for you when they’re in need).” Routine is Key Former health visitor, parenting expert and author of ‘Happy Baby, Happy Family,’ Sarah Beeson, says establishing a bedtime routine is very important too. “A key part of an evening routine is a milky supper or snack before bed. Do the same thing every night, a warm bath, a milky supper and try and avoid rough and tumble and playing, if mum
have been met, let them have a grumble/cry for five minutes or so, but persistent crying should be attended to.”
Don’t Ignore Crying Once you have implemented a calm sleep routine and environment, Sarah explains that it’s important to make sure you have emotional empathy for your baby when it comes to bedtime. “Remember that your baby is an independent human being that has rights. Sleep is part of that. Many people use the cry-it-out method. You wouldn’t let an adult cry for hours and ignore their needs. Crying is the way the baby lets you know that it isn’t happy in some way. Use your own judgement. If all their needs
Trust Your Instincts In an age where there is so much parenting information, Sarah believes that mums and dads should trust their intuition more. “There is so much advice out there that you feel you have to follow. But no one knows your baby better than you. Do what works for you and your child.” If you have persistent sleep issues with your baby or child, please seek advice from your doctor or health visitor.

Providing a good sleep environment is the best thing parents can do to aid their child’s sleep, no matter the age of the child. HERE ARE SOME TIPS FOR THE BEST SLEEP: ✸ Sleep in a cool room (15-18 degrees centigrade) ✸ Try a nightlight, low blue light or red light throughout the night. Any light that is blue, white, green, purple/pink inhibits the secretion of melatonin - the hormone of sleep ✸ You need a good level of humidity or moisture in the air. A dry room from central heating will wake your child with a dry throat which will increase the need to drink in the night. www.familiesonline.co.uk
✸ Be warm enough in your room with appropriate bedding ✸ For little ones, try using a special sleeping bag with fitted legs and open feet in 2.5 or 3 togs, like Slumbersac ‘Babies and toddlers are meant to wake in the night which protects them from cot death. These tips may not be magic, however, they may help you to get a few extra hours sleep!

Mental Health Issues Starting Early One in 10 children aged five to 16 - or three in every classroom - have a diagnosable mental health problem and 75% of mental illness starts before the age of 18 according to statistics. Place2Be, a national charity providing emotional support to children, advises that it’s never too early or too late to start thinking about your child’s mental health. Some simple actions you can take at any age to help promote positive mental health include: • Carving out time to be with your child one-to-one. Put other worries to one side and actively listen to them and their feelings. • Enjoying a quiet activity
together can make it easier to talk to your child and can encourage your child to open up naturally. • Taking a step back from today’s busy lives and enjoy some dedicated time listening and playing with your child. • Creative activities such as art and craft can encourage bonding with your child. • Providing a stable and consistent environment, with clear boundaries helps children feel secure and better able to learn about and cope with the world around them. • Be kind to yourself and look after your own mental health. This will have the most beneficial impact of all on the wellbeing of your child.

Dental Check by Age 1 A recent analysis has found that 80% of children between the ages of 1 and 2 years had not visited an NHS dentist despite guidance saying children should start dental check-ups when they develop their first tooth. The analysis by the Faculty of Dental Surgery at The Royal College of Surgeons, also found that 60% of children aged 1 to 4 didn’t have a dental check-up in 12 months. Official Public Health England guidance states that a child should have a check-up as soon as their teeth start to appear at
around 6 months of age. NHS dental check-ups for children are free. Early dental visits enable children (as well as parents and carers) to learn about good oral health practice and prevent them from developing a fear of dental visits. A UK wide Dental Check by One #DCby1 campaign has been launched by the British Society for Paediatric Dentistry to increase the number of children who access dental care aged 0 to 2 years. Babies visiting the dentist before their 1st birthday will be awarded a #DCby1 Certificate at participating dentists.

New Times Table Test for Year 4 Pupils
The government has announced plans to have all Year 4 pupils sit a compulsory times table test. The test will be tried out in a sample of schools with it being made available on a voluntary basis to all schools across England from June 2019. It will become mandatory in June 2020.
The test has been described by the Government as a 5 minute “on-screen check” which is designed to help ensure children know the multiplication tables up to 12 off by heart and has been designed to avoid causing additional stress for children and teachers. The Government has also said results from the check will not be published at school-level, and will not be used by Ofsted and others to force changes in schools. Some teachers’ unions have expressed strong concerns about the introduction of another test being an unnecessary additional burden on schools.

CHILDCARE
Childcare Options for your Family By Stephanie Rough
There are many different types of childcare and deciding on the right option can be a daunting task. You may need childcare for as many different reasons as there are childcare options: you’re returning to work; you need someone to pick the children up from school; you need someone to help with your new-born. So how do you go about finding the right childcare for your family? The biggest piece of advice for any parent thinking about childcare is to plan ahead. Many nurseries have limited places which can get booked up even years in advance, whilst finding the right nanny or childminder can equally take weeks, if not months. Here are some initial questions to consider: ● How old are your children and do they have any special requirements? ● How many hours per week do you need childcare? ● Would you prefer a home or nursery environment? ● Does your childcare have to be near your place of work and what is your available travelling time? ● What is your budget? Your potential childcare options include family, nurseries, child-minders, nannies and au pairs. Each option has its pros and cons. Family offers the great benefit of being free, home based and flexible to suit your hours. However it IS important for the family member(s) to be fully committed and not inclined to take lots of holidays when you need cover! Misunderstandings between family members over childcare can sometimes cause more problems than a professional arrangement. Nurseries can provide toddlers with opportunities for social interaction but not the one-to one attention that an infant requires. Nursery hours are the least flexible but your child can attend all year round, except when they are unwell. 6 Families Bedfordshire May/June 2018
Childminders provide a home-from-home setting with relatively fixed hours and more flexibility for families who need less standard hours, shorter days or parttime care. Fees for childminders are charged per child so if you have 2 or 3 children, this may prove more expensive than a nanny. Childminders have to hold a minimum childcare qualification and are regulated by Ofsted. Their rating and reports can be checked online. Nannies are unregulated and do not need to have any qualifications. However, many ARE qualified and can hold degree level qualifications in childcare. Whilst some nannies are registered with Ofsted it is a voluntary process which benefits mainly the employer who can then use childcare to pay her. Nannies are widely regarded as the most expensive childcare option, but this isn’t necessarily the case if you have 2 or 3 children as nannies are paid a salary for the job regardless of the number of children in a family. They also provide the most flexibility and are based at your home. You can also join forces with another family and share a nanny. Having a nanny means you have to become an employer, register with HMRC and provide your nanny with a contract. However there are nanny payroll services available that make this process very simple. When children start school, childcare decisions can become even more difficult. Au-pairs are a very popular choice for
Ultimately, the right childcare option is the one that leaves your children happy, stimulated and safe (and you with great peace of mind).
school age children. Financially they offer the cheapest childcare option, providing you have a spare room available for them. However, au pairs often have zero or very limited childcare experience and travel to the UK for a cultural experience lasting only between 6 and 12 months. Cost considerations will play a large part in the decision about childcare, as it’s essential to find something affordable. It’s important to check to see if you are entitled to Tax Free Childcare and the new style Childcare Voucher and you can do so at www.childcarechoices.gov.uk The options for childcare are very varied and having so much choice can make the decision harder! Naturally, you need to establish available options in your local area, so research is key. What you finally choose must work for you and take account of your work commute and/or your daily routine. Ultimately, the right childcare option is the one that leaves your children happy, stimulated and safe and you with great peace of mind. Stephanie Rough works for Parental Choice, the essential “one-stop shop” for your childcare needs. Parental Choice offers childcare searches for nurseries, childminders, nannies and au pairs. It also supports employers of nannies with payroll and employer responsibilities.

Does your Child Need a Tutor? By Claire Winter
In the last decade, the number of children who have a tutor has increased by one third. At some point in their academic journey, it’s quite likely your child may need some additional support. This may be because you are preparing them for the 11 Plus, school entrance exams or because they are struggling in a particular subject. A tutor is normally a teacher that will teach your child in a specific subject or exam technique. You can opt for 1:1 tutoring or tutoring in a small group or class. You can find a tutor via a tutoring agency, through your school or via online searches. There are also online programmes and companies that offer a mixture of online and offline support. Tutoring can be expensive and ranges from £20-50 an hour depending on the tutor and where you live. Tutoring via Skype can be cheaper and starts at around £15 per hour. When Does a Child Benefit from Tutoring? ● If they have lost confidence and tutoring will help them boost their self-belief.

● If they are struggling with a particular subject, and their teacher has flagged it. ● If they need to improve their grades to pass an upcoming exam.
How to Find the Right Tutor? Private Tutors Personal recommendation is always a good place to start. You can also ask at your school as some teachers tutor after school. If you are hiring a tutor privately, make sure they have a DBS check and have references too. Also, check their qualifications and whether they have taught children in the same age range as yours. Make sure you meet them in person or via Skype and are comfortable your child is happy to work with them. Rachael Sprague from tutor directory, www.tutorful.co.uk says “The key to finding the perfect tutor is to ask lots of questions! Don’t just focus on their experience in education (although this is important), but ask about their lives and what makes them tick. This person will potentially be spending a lot of time with your child, so it is important to make sure their personalities are compatible.” Tutoring Agency This is a good option if you are short on time. An agency should do most of the hard work for you. They should find someone that fits your requirements and complete all the reference and safety checks needed. Companies like Fleet Tutoring (www.fleettutors.co.uk), have a database of tutors in your area, from which you can choose Will Veness who runs a tutoring agency (www.collegiatetutors.co.uk) says safety is paramount. “Tuition agencies have a legal obligation to seek background checks
from their tutors (called an Enhanced DBS Check). An Enhanced check searches the tutors’ criminal history for convictions, cautions, warnings, and reprimands, and ensures the tutor isn’t on any barred lists. This is not an essential part of signing up to open-market tutoring sites, as they operate more like a search engine rather than a hands-on agency. This can lead to anyone being able to sign up as a tutor with a simple upload of a CV. Some websites do, however, at least highlight tutors who have received this important check, so parents should certainly keep an eye out for this when browsing tutors with them.” We believe it is very much worth it to pay the agent’s commission for peace of mind, especially with the primary-age students. Furthermore, rigorous agencies will interview their candidates to ensure they are able to deliver a quality standard of tuition. Local agencies are ideal (if available), as the administrators will know their tutors personally, and talk to the parents directly.” Tutoring Companies There are various different national, regional and local companies offering tuition. Explore Learning (www. explorelearning.co.uk) combines online tutoring at centres across the country with tutors on hand, who are available to help your child if they get stuck. There’s no need to book either, which is great if you need flexibility. Others, like Kumon (www.kumon.co.uk) are more structured and teach via a curriculum in small groups. Their method of learning enables children to self-learn with instructor guidance. Preparing for a Tutor Talk to your child’s teacher to get a heads up the areas in which they need help. Show the tutor some examples of your child’s work, so they get a good picture of where they are academically. Ask your child what they need extra support with. They often jump at the chance to be helped with something they are stuck on. From the start be clear about whether the tutor will set homework and when they can give you feedback on your child’s progress. A tutor should encourage your child’s love of learning beyond the classroom and give them confidence in subjects with which they are struggling. HERE IS A HANDY CHECKLIST OF QUESTIONS TO ASK A POTENTIAL TUTOR 1. Are they CRB checked? 2. What are their qualifications? 3. Do they have references? 4. Do they have experience of the National Curriculum or the syllabus your child is working on? 5. Do they have resources that they share with pupils? 6. Are there any additional materials that you need to buy? 7. Do they have any success stories they could share? 8. When do you get updates on progress and what is the best way to contact them? 9. Do they have cancellation fees and how much notice do they need to cancel a session? 10. How many lessons do you need to commit to? Most tutors expect a commitment of 4 to 6 weeks as a minimum. www.familiesonline.co.uk
EDUCATION
STEM: Helping Children with the Fundamentals of Education By Christopher Cederskog
It’s not easy being a parent. You want to do the best for your children, but sometimes it’s hard to work out what the best actually is. Education is one of those areas where advice is constantly changing. If you are interested in helping your kids with the fundamentals of education there is an acronym which you should become aware of: STEM. It stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and it is fast becoming the core of the British and global education system. There is hardly a career which does not involve some element of STEM, from farming to neurosurgery, and it also plays a part in a many everyday activities. This is why it’s important our children can understand its key tenets. As a parent, then, what can you do to help form the STEM of your child’s tree of knowledge? I have always believed that learning should be fun and the popular perception is that the subjects of STEM are anything but. However, science, engineering and technology are particularly well-suited to play and mathematics can be applied to virtually any dayto-day situation. It’s just a matter of identifying the right opportunities. The next time you’re baking pastry together, let your child
measure out the ingredients and ask them questions: what does ‘half fat to flour’ mean? Let them work out, according to that rule, how much flour is needed if you’re using 100 grams of fat. Get them to count out how many pastry cases were made from that ratio, then work out how much more pastry it would take to double the number of cases, or how many pies each family
member will get based on the current number. Talk about the ingredients, what they are and where they’ve come from. The next time your child falls, take the chance to talk to them about gravity and discuss why they fell downwards rather than upwards! If they’ve grazed their knees, once the tears have stopped, chat a bit about biology – why is blood red, why do scabs form, how do cuts heal? If you don’t know the answers yourself, call on Doctor Google – he’s always there to help. When you’re out with your children, encourage scientific observations: when walking to the park, talk about why the leaves are green or why they fall in autumn. See if your children can spot any mini-beasts and set them the challenge of learning about them when they get home. And when at home, help bring out your child’s inner-engineer by encouraging them to put those endless MegaBlocks and LEGO bricks to work. Every activity can be a learning
opportunity without a child needing to identify it as such. Your job as a parent is to try to find ways to make the learning opportunity fun. While I’m not saying that all education should be done by stealth, I am an advocate of learning through play. The lessons I most strongly remember from my childhood are those that were learned while I was having fun: the Van de Graaff generator sparking as much imagination as electricity; the recreation of the witches’ scene in Macbeth making Shakespeare seem relevant and interesting; the days in the garden, learning where food actually comes from and that there is a point to worms. Children were born to learn and their brains are busy absorbing information from the second they leave the womb. If you can make your lessons fun, informal and an integral part of everyday life, then your little ones will learn by osmosis and you can sit back in the happy glow of a good job, well done.

Be on Trend with Your Child’s Party in 2018! By Claire Winter
Children’s parties are always a hot topic of conversation in most households across the country. Who to invite? What theme? Which location? We’ve talked to party specialists and planners to find out the top party ideas for 2018, so you don’t have to. Chocolate Parties
Most kids love chocolate; it’s messy, fun and creative. What’s not to love? Hire a chocolatier to come to your house and teach your children to make some fantastic chocs. Alternatively hire some moulds and melt dark, milk and white chocolate so they can make their own. The chocolate is hot so this option is probably not suitable for very small children. The Chocolate Party People (www. thechocolatepartypeople. co.uk) offers a Build a Bar, Chocolate Pizzeria and Truffle Making package for kids. An extra bonus is they get to take away their chocolates instead of a party bag.
Unicorns are Still Cool
Kids are still going unicorn crazy. Harriet Jones, founder of online boutique store Rockahula Kids (www. rockahulakids.com) says “2018 has to be the year that the unicorn trend and theme takes centre stage at children’s birthday parties. Over the last few months, we have seen an incredible increase in demand for unicornthemed accessories for party favours, whether it be hair clips, charms, necklaces or hairbands. Coupled with unicorns, we have noticed more interest in our rainbow themed accessories for party bags such as clips, rings, and bracelets which go handin-hand with the mythical creature.”A kitsch, rainbow unicorn party sounds like just the ticket!

Unusual Themes
Think of a party with a twist. Top party organiser Fable & Moon (www.fableandmoon. com) says “Children’s parties are becoming even more sophisticated in 2018! Unicorns and Mermaids are still going strong but expect a fresh twist on the theme. Also expect to see wedding trends making their way into children’s parties, particularly celestial (moons and stars) and all things holographic. Think, oversized disco balls and lots and lots of sparkle!” 10 Families Bedfordshire March/April 2018
Escape rooms are a great choice for older children. You get locked in a room and have to work out how to get out. It’s a great team-building experience and no mess in your house! Many escape rooms have themes - you could even get guests to dress up to match it! You need to check what the age range is and whether you need adult supervision.
Glamping
Belltent and glamping parties are going to be really popular especially during the summer months. Set up tents wit themes like cowboys, intergalactic, or botanical. You can hire companies to put them up in the garden and if you haven’t got a garden – set up the tents in the house. Older children can have a
Top Tips for a Budget Party Timing
If you hold a party between 3pm and 5pm, you can provide party snacks or treats instead of a meal. Try fruit kebabs that you dip in melted chocolate for a fun treat. Hiring a chocolate fountain could also be a fun way to end the party. Just warn the parents not to dress their kids in their best party clothes! Older children would probably prefer a pizza delivery.
Try E-invites
Create your own digital invitations to email to guests. You can also use the free option at www.paperlesspost.com and pay a small amount using various other websites, like www.mini-epic.com. Founder of the business Jonathan says “Our digital invitations can be created and sent in just a few minutes, with no paper or postage involved, which not only saves you time and money but also saves some trees! But what’s proving really popular is the ability to download your Mini-Epic invitation to share via WhatsApp.”
Look for Bargains
Your pound shop can be a treasure trove of party napkins and decorations. Buy plain
sleepover whilst the youngsters can go home. Andrew Pearce, coowner of the belltentexperience. com says “we have seen a huge increase in bookings for children’s parties. Bell tents are fun and versatile. You can set them up indoors, or outside and kids love them. Sleeping in a tent is magical whatever age you are!”
paper bags and get the children to personalise them. You could also make cupcakes and get the kids to decorate them. Party favours and entertainment all at the same time!
Themed Parties
Choose a theme like pirates, Alice in Wonderland or teddies for the younger kids and base all the games make all the games centred on your chosen theme. Decorations can be homemade – get the whole family involved. Pinterest is a great place to get inspiration.
Share
Split the cost by sharing the party with a classmate whose birthday is at a similar time. Just make sure you agree who is doing what!
Don’t Forget to Say Thanks
Take a group photo of all the kids at the party and print it off at Boots or use an online site. Get your kids to write a thank you note on the back with a Sharpie or gold pen. A great momento and thank you all at once!

PARTY FEATURE
Have Fun and Enjoy Planning your Child’s Party by Michéllin Store, Editor of Families Bedfordshire
We love planning our son’s birthday party, or any party for that matter! My partner is a Musician and runs a children’s music class, so we are always blessed to have live music at our parties. Sometimes it can feel overwhelming planning a party. But, if you plan ahead and involve close friends, you also get to enjoy the party all together, stress free. Firstly, make a list of what you need - you can use the tips below and create a magical and memorable birthday party for your little ones.
Choose a Special date
Try to choose a date that you feel you know most of your child’s favourite friends or family members can make. If your child’s birthday is close to the holidays (i.e Christmas/ New Year’s), try to plan a party a good few weeks before, so that everyone can enjoy celebrating your child’s special day. I would suggest leaving the actual date of your child’s birthday open to have a separate celebration that you are able to enjoy with them all to yourself on that day. Sometimes, we as parents pile even more expectations on ourselves when the party we arrange is on the actual date, so be gentle with yourself and enjoy every moment of planning – no pressure.
Go as large as you feel you can manage
It’s okay to be tempted to go large if you have an entertainer and friends on board to help – live music is always a blast. Children love dancing and playing musical statues and just dancing and singing in general. If you feel that too many children for you may equate to complete chaos, keep a cosy party at home, with up to eight children is more than plenty.
Have a blast baking and decorating the cake yourself This is my favourite part of planning the party! Mary Berry has some fantastic Victoria Sponge Cake recipes that are easy to follow. Find the recipe (www. maryberry.co.uk), get your cake ingredients, mix together and while you are baking, draw the design you want to on the cake onto paper so decorating is easy. Even if it doesn’t turn out that well the first time, the little ones www.familiesonline.co.uk
(and everyone) will be more focused on the fact that it’s cake (and that candles are being blown out).
Party Food
Cut sandwiches into fun shapes. A small circle works really well. I have found that hearts, stars, gingerbread man and even Diplodocus shapes are lots of fun. For a difference, use white bread one side and brown the other. Easiest fillings I have used is egg and mayo, and ham and cheese. Tomatoes, carrots, cucumber, hummus, flatbread, crisps, fruit, juice, tea and are all manageable food options.
Themed parties
Our son’s first birthday was an Outer Space party (I dressed up as the Milky – Way as I was still breast feeding at the time). Fun themes we have used and attended are: Rainbow Jungle Boogie, Parrot, Pirate or Fairy parties. A really memorable party we got invited to was a Parrot – themed party. What made it amazing was the strict dress code which got parents and children together, creating imaginative and colourful Parrot costumes. With your chosen theme, you can organise a treasure hunt or invent your own games such as ‘pin the beak on the parrot’.
Present opening ceremony
Gift opening can be over stimulating for little ones, and they miss the opportunity of knowing who their gifts are from. As a birthday tradition, we put our son’s gifts to one side, focusing on being present in all of the fun activities. We make a point of opening the card first and reading it together. Cards are so meaningful. We spread gift – opening over a space of a month to allow our boy to really
enjoy each toy and remember who gave it to him. Receiving a gift and knowing who it is from, is a really special experience to watch (especially when their eyes light up and you see their appreciation). Our son was able to thank his friends and family, and when he enjoys his gift he always mentions the person who gave it to him. Most importantly, have fun and be excited for the celebration and your party will be amazing!
Authentic Photo Booth
Creating a photobooth is so much fun! As an activity you can make your own masks at the party or buy props and create a space for photo capturing. Nominate a friend or family member who loves taking pictures to create an authentic photo album to remember.
Candle – Lighting Ceremony
Inform guests before – hand about the cake & candle lighting ceremony so that everyone is ready on cue to sing ‘Happy Birthday’. Nominate a couple of friends or family to switch lights (and any background music) off, as well as leading the birthday boy or girl to the cake while mum or dad bring the cake with candles lit to their child.

CLUBS & CLASSES
An Hour of Moderate Exercise Every Day for Children By Andrew Campbell
The number of children meeting the recommended amount of physical activity for healthy development and to maintain a healthy weight, which is 60 minutes a day, drops by 40% as they move through primary school.
A new survey from Public Health England (PHE) and Disney looking at the effects of physical activity on children’s emotional wellbeing, found: ● being active made the majority of 5 to 11 year olds feel happier, more confident and more sociable, according to their parents ● nearly all children said they liked being active ● the main motivations for kids to be more active were having friends to join in and having more sports or activities they liked to choose from ● children’s overall happiness declines with age; 64% of 5 and 6 year olds said they always feel happy, compared to just 48% of 11 year olds Currently, just under a quarter of boys and fewer girls meet the national recommended level
of activity. Furthermore, 1 in 5 children start primary school overweight or obese, rising to more than a third by the time they leave. The survey identified the main barriers to physical activity and reveals that the worry of ‘not being very good’ was one of the most common. This increases with age. Parents are being urged to try new sports and physical activities locally, whether at their local park leisure centre or via a popular sport in an effort to help children get more of the 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity they need each day for healthy development and to maintain a healthy weight. (Opportunity to localise: Why not try some clubs and classes in your local area?) As part of its campaign to
assist children to engage in enough physical activity, a national 10 Minute Shake Ups programme run by the PHE
offers fun, 10-minute activities for kids, featuring their favourite Disney characters and shows as inspiration.

Pre-School Rules! Clubs and Classes for Pre-Schoolers
By Sally J. Hall
We take a look at the kinds of activities you can find near you to keep your Pre-Schooler amused. Football and Rugby Little ones learn how to control the ball, use gross motor skills and understand teamwork. Look for a local club where kids can get more serious as they grow (www.trytimekidsrugby.com) Gymnastics Gym activities help with flexibility and strength. Look for classes suited to young kids (www.saltogym.org). As they get older, they can enroll for British Gymnastics Association (british-gymnastics.org) certificates.
Music From singing nursery rhymes to learning an instrument, teaching kids to love music gives them a lifelong gift (www.musicwithmummy.co.uk) Arts and Crafts Get involved in crafting with your kids. They can learn painting, gluing, cutting out and sticking and of course the art of adding glitter! (Saxon Games and Craft, Bedford) 12 Families Bedfordshire March/April 2018
Swimming Learning to swim is a useful life skill and the younger you start, the less likely it is your child will be nervous in water. Most Leisure Centres run mother and baby sessions or look for nationwide classes. Look for www.aquaed.hougton@sll.co.uk
Languages You may want your child to learn a language from an early age if you have family or a holiday home in another country. Find a group where they play games in or learn to sing in a different language. Look for www.kidslingo.co.uk Dance Dancing is a great form of exercise and can be enjoyed from a young age. Look for a class that focusses on play and enjoyment and also for Diddi Dance (diddidance.com) near you.
Theatre There are lots of drama and acting clubs for small kids. They teach self-expression, working within a group and confidence. Perform (www.perform.org.uk) run classes all over the UK. www.familiesonline.co.uk
