Can you help a new mum? Some mums have a fantastic support network to help them through those heady first few weeks and months of motherhood. Others are not so lucky, and support is desperately needed for those daily challenges parenting can bring. Home-Start in Bartley Green & Quinton is looking for volunteers who can help make a real difference to a family who are feeling under pressure. It could be because a mum is coping with a multiple birth, has post-natal depression, or because they are feeling isolated at home with very young children. Could you become a Home-Start volunteer? You can help a local family by offering practical support or a listening ear. If you have experience of being a parent and have a few hours to spare during the week, Home-Start would love to hear from you. Full training (fitting in with school hours) will be given to suitable volunteers. 0121 675 4441; admin@homestartbgq.org

Keeping Art at the Heart of your child K ids have so much fun at Art at the Heart club by splashing, sloshing, splattering, dripping and ‘puddling’ paint! Artistic masterpieces are also created through drawing, sculpting, printing, dancing and singing.

Art at the Heart directors Mukesh Kumar and Kamaljit Suman, the proud parents of two lovely girls, are artist educators who specialise in Fine Art and Graphic Design respectively. Between them, they have led large art departments in colleges, won the TES FE 2011 Award for Outstanding Innovation in Teaching and Learning, were commissioned to create beautiful centrepieces at prestigious events presided by stately visitors, and have had their art work highly commended by royalty. Mukesh and Kamaljit have found, and studies into art education confirm, art helps children to flourish in their academic studies, and that it helps with mindfulness. Art at the Heart’s students have won end-of-year art awards, and successfully gained art scholarships to a leading independent school. Art at the Heart projects encourage children to explore issues, attitudes and different cultures through creative means. Using their wealth of expertise, Mukesh and Kamaljit aim to develop children into visionaries and deep thinkers able to see that they can make a difference to themselves and to the world. artattheheartltd.co.uk | 07772 319 303 | info@artattheheartltd.co.uk

Dance pupils - poised for excellence Rutleigh Norris School of Dance believe the act of learning to be a dancer, for boys and girls, aids childhood in many ways.

It improves strength and coordination, and also develops concentration, respect and courtesy. Dance is a key for your child to explore, develop, build awareness and become socially interactive with other budding dance students. Their self-confidence and self-esteem will be boosted and the study of dance encourages perseverance as well as improving social and creative skills. RNSD specialises in the prestigious Royal Academy of Dance Classical Ballet Syllabi, and also offers Modern Jazz and Tap Dance classes. Each lesson is taught in a professional, caring environment, where the children can enjoy excelling whilst feeling safe and valued. Founded in 1959, the Rutleigh Norris School of Dance has been providing their pupils in Moseley, Bournville and Alcester with a superior quality of teaching for the past 58 years. All teachers have a DBS certificate. rnsd.co.uk, principal@rnsd.co.uk

he New Year is a great time to start thinking about your child’s 11 plus future. By now, they’ve had time to settle into their new classes at school, so January provides the perfect opportunity to set goals for the coming year. Children who start their 11 plus preparation now have plenty of time to identify and tackle any weak areas and steadily improve their skills. It’s also a good time to look into mock exams so that children know what to expect when the big day finally arrives. In fact, KSOL’s experienced 11+ tutors recommend that children get as much practice as possible, as the exams will not only profile their ability but also help them to overcome emotional fears. Using over 10 years of experience, KSOL can help your child achieve 11+ success with personalised online 11+ tuition and live exam experiences. Affordable boarding school option M

odern boarding schools are an excellent option for families working lengthy hours and travelling for long periods to and from school. Many families automatically consider that the cost is outside of their budget, but Adams’ Grammar School, Shropshire provides state-boarding education. The fees are for boarding only, the education is free just as it is in any state school.

Samuel Obeng-Asare, Junior Boarding Master at Shropshire’s Adams’ Grammar School explains “State-boarding schools offer a great alternative; our fees are £3,655 per term and this covers all of the boys’ needs during term time including meals, laundry, transport and most weekend activities. Many of our pupils live in urban areas some distance from the school but they love the freedom that living in rural Shropshire with 100 acres of grounds, gives them.” Mr Obeng-Asare has a boarding background himself and can see the benefits it provides to boys and their families “For families where both parents or a lone parent are working long hours boarding offers stability and means pupils have support with their homework as well an opportunity to form strong and long lasting friendships.” Families interested in finding out more about boarding at Adams’ Grammar can book onto one of the regular Taster Weekends the school holds. www.adamsgs.org.uk, 01952 386300, enquiries@adamsgs.org.uk

Could your child become a coding whizz? There’s no escaping it, computer science is present in our children’s lives from an early age, and it’s here to stay. So it’s vital we prepare them for future developments and industries. What is coding? Coding provides the building blocks to all technology - enabling programmes in computer systems, and technology that we use every day to run smoothly. When we use a washing machine, or our laptop, we rely on coding. Boarding Taster Weekends available

“Our school makes boarding affordable for many because the education is free” • A selective state grammar school with boarding for £3,655 per term • A stunning home with acres of grounds to explore • Excellent academic results – 80% A*-B at A-level 2016 • Extensive choice of sports and extra-curricular activities • Rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted in all four categories

How can you teach coding to your child?

Any child that can use a smartphone or tablet can learn some level of coding and programming. For many children, coding can become a fun hobby, often without them realising the importance of what they are learning. There are many apps and websites available to develop your child’s understanding of technology. For example: Daisy the Dinosaur app is a colourful app ideal for younger children – they learn the coding rules to make Daisy dance. Hopscotch app allows older children to make, play and publish their own games. Code.org website has a multitude of online courses and useful information. This site is brilliant for learning at home and in the classroom. www.familiesonline.co.uk/education Issue 37

Save ÂŁ50 this New Year

t Explore Learning, a child’s educational journey goes beyond acing a quick spelling test or getting to the top of the class for a term. It is about building long-lasting confidence that takes them through their entire life, whether it is through developing a ‘have a go attitude’, or knowing it’s ok to put their hand up without fear of a ‘silly’ question being mocked. It’s about nurturing a fearless attitude to learning, so that every child can become their version of amazing. Explore’s incredible tutors are there to support every step of the way. Rather than accept a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer, they will encourage children to explore the boundaries of their thinking. To celebrate the new year, Explore would like to offer something to help your child along their fearless learner journey. From the 16th January until the 28th February, you’ll save ÂŁ50 when you join an Explore maths and English tuition centre. Find your nearest centre on their website. Beat the January blues at Rock Up, Birmingham This winter period, when it’s difficult to rely on weather allowing children the chance to let off steam outdoors, why not try out the indoor activities at Rock Up, Birmingham? There’s something for everyone, aged 0 – 74! Rock Up is a thrilling indoor climbing centre at Broadway Plaza, 220 Ladywood Middleway, B16 8LP. There are 26 multi-coloured climbing walls for the kids age 4+ to explore, including the twister wall and the Leap of Faith. You’ll also find an indoor soft play area for the under 6’s. Even the under 2’s can enjoy exploring their very own space in the Babies section. Your kids are guaranteed a great time. ‘Sharenting’ habits on Social Media

Social media is a growing force across the world. It can be used as a helpful tool for people to share amazing memories with their friends and family who they are not able to see face-to-face. However, should ‘sharenting’ become more limited as a method of sharing news and images of one’s children? Research by the Baby to Toddler Show, in July–August 2016,found that 71% of people believe that parents post too much information about their children on social media with 45% believing that parents are “showing off”. Research by Nominet found that the average parent in the UK with a social media account will have posted a whopping 1,498 photos of their child online by their fifth birthday! However, parents who post disagree they do too much and 82% say their reason for sharing is to connect with friends and family members they don’t see often. But what about how the children feel? 37% of parents hadn’t considered how their kids will feel when they’re older, knowing that photos of them growing up are all over the internet. Of those that had considered their children’s feelings, 36% believed they would grow up and treasure the memories. Research based on answers from 1,292 respondents.
