The trend of grandparents providing vital, day-to- day support to their grandchildren known as ‘grannannying’ is more widespread than you may have thought according to a new YouGov poll for Age UK Two-fifths (40%) of the nation’s grandparents over the age of 50 – 5 million – have provided regular childcare for their grandchildren, according to the survey. The vast majority did so once a week but a fifth provided support 4 to 6 times a week. But it’s not all one way. Nearly all grandparents (88%) said they enjoyed the time spent with their grandchildren and half felt it kept them physical and mentally active. Foster Care Fortnight - You Can Make A Difference Foster Care Fortnight™ runs from 14 to 27 May and is the UK’s biggest foster carer awareness raising campaign delivered by leading fostering charity, The Fostering Network. The campaign showcases the commitment, passion and dedication of foster carers. It demonsrates that ‘foster care transforms lives’; - not just the lives of the young people who are fostered, but also those of foster carers and their families and friends. Undoubtedly fostering is challenging but there are tremendous rewards

including making a positive difference to a vulnerable child or young person, opportunities to expand skills through training courses, the chance to develop relationships that can last a lifetime and generous financial incentives. The satisfaction and pride in helping a young person with difficulties develop into a rounded individual is the ultimate reward for the majority of foster carers. Book A Dental Check-Up Before Your Baby’s First Birthday A recent analysis has found that 80% of children between the ages of 1 and 2 years had not visited an NHS dentist despite guidance saying children should start dental check-ups when they develop their first tooth. The analysis by the Faculty of Dental Surgery at The Royal College of Surgeons, also found that 60% of children aged 1 to 4 didn’t have a dental check-up in 12 months. Official Public Health England guidance states that a child should have a check-up as soon as their teeth start to appear at around 6 months of age. NHS dental check-ups for children are free. Early dental visits enable children (as well as parents and carers) to learn about good oral health practice and prevent them from developing a fear of dentists. A UK wide Dental Check by One #DCby1 campaign has been launched by the British Society for Paediatric Dentistry to increase the number children who access dental care aged 0 to 2 years. New Times Tables Test The government has announced plans to have all Year 4 pupils sit a compulsory times table test. The test will be tried out in a sample of schools with it being made available on a voluntary basis to all schools across England from June 2019. It will become mandatory in June 2020. The test has been described by the Government as a 5 minute “on-screen check” which is designed to help ensure children know the multiplication tables up to 12 off by heart and has been designed to avoid causing additional stress for children and teachers. The Government has also said results from the check will not be published at school-level, and will not be used by Ofsted and others to force changes in schools. Some teachers’ unions have expressed strong concerns about the introduction of another test being an unnecessary additional burden on schools.

Local Show Attracts More Exhibits To Help Raise Money For Local Charities This summer will see the Stroud Vintage Transport & Engine Club (SVTEC) stage their Annual Show at South Cerney Airfield in Cirencester, Gloucestershire from 3-5 August. Over £180, 000 has been donated in recent years. Whilst the show has evolved a lot, the mission remains the same - to inform, educate, celebrate and preserve a unique transport heritage. The deadline for those wishing to enter a vintage vehicle is by 1 June. www.glosvintageextravaganza.co.uk. familiesonline.co.uk

11 Plus Mock Exams Perfect Techniques

By Christopher Cederskog If you are interested in helping your kids with the fundamentals of education there is an acronym which you should become aware of: STEM. It stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and it is fast becoming the core of the British and global education system. There is hardly a career which does not involve some element of STEM, from farming to neurosurgery, and it also plays a part in a many everyday activities. This is why it’s important our children can understand its key tenets.

11 Plus Tutoring Academy will be running their successful programme of mock exams from April through to August.

As a parent, then, what can you do to help form the STEM of your child’s tree of knowledge? I have always believed that learning should be fun and the popular perception is that the subjects of STEM are anything but. However, science, engineering and technology are particularly well-suited to play and mathematics can be applied to virtually any day-to-day situation. It’s just a matter of identifying the right opportunities.

The programme of mocks exams will build your child’s confidence to deal with the exam environment. All exams have different content to each other. Early mock exams (April, May and July) are beneficial in understanding your child’s weaker areas, with time to improve these areas. Later mock exams (August) allow your child to perfect their exam technique and build confidence.

The next time you’re baking pastry together, let your child measure out the ingredients and ask them questions. Talk about the ingredients, what they are and where they’ve come from. The next time your child falls, take the chance to talk to them about gravity and discuss why they fell downwards rather than upwards! If they’ve grazed their knees, once the tears have stopped, chat a bit about biology.

Exam strategies and detailed reports provided at every exam. Courses are held in Charlton Kings, Cheltenham. They are run by a published author of very popular 11plus books who has many years experience of preparing hundreds of children for the 11plus. The mock exams have an excellent record supported by testimonials.

When you’re out with your children, encourage scientific observations: when walking to the park, talk about why the leaves are green or why they fall in autumn. And when at home, help bring out your child’s inner-engineer by encouraging them to put those endless MegaBlocks and LEGO bricks to work. If you can make your lessons fun, informal and an integral part of everyday life, then your little ones will learn by osmosis and you can sit back in the happy glow of a good job, well done.

Places are allocated on a first come, first served basis. Early booking is adviseable. For exam times and booking form go to: www.11plustutoringacademy.co.uk or contact Philip McMahon email: 11plustutoringacademy@gmail.com or call 01242 221271 6

It’s not easy being a parent. You want to do the best for your children, but sometimes it’s hard to work out what the best actually is. Education is one of those areas where advice is constantly changing.

A Pledge To Look After Our World Dean Close Pre-Prep - Just Family Portrait - 182mm High x 135mm Wide

At this time of year, there is a tangible sense of excitement as the days get longer and everywhere there are signs of new growth. Children have an amazing, innate sense of curiosity and wonder in nature and this is the perfect time of year to celebrate the environment and encourage their understanding of the importance of looking after our world.

On a recent exciting ‘Eco Day’ everyone took part in lots of green activities – including exploring different forms of renewable energy at investigation stations in the hall and a recycling race game. Pupils also thought about how to become ‘greener’ and signed a Green Pledge. Some of their ideas are going to be put into practice during this term, for example, remembering to turn off lights, recycling more and using eco-friendly products.

Dr Carolyn Shelley Going to a forest trail or planning a walk in the countryside is always a great adventure as they find new treasures, notice new plants and enthuse everyone with their joy and excitement! There are many wonderful trails and nature events to take part in and it is worth looking out for special activities which will spark and nurture their fascination.

Most exciting of all is that pupils will be planting trees in the Forest School to help create new habitats for the important flora and fauna in years to come. It would be wonderful if some of the children became ‘green champions’ of the future!

Make the right start

At Dean Close Pre-Preparatory School, pupils have recently been focusing on the environment and the topic of ‘Looking after our World’, thinking about being grateful and how to be good ‘stewards’ of the beautiful grounds and countryside. As part of this focus, everyone has been challenged to think about ways to turn their passion for the environment into action. familiesonline.co.uk

Hopefully with some warmer, dryer weather on the way families can get out and about to enjoy nature; why not think about signing your own Green Pledge to help look after our wonderful planet? Dr Carolyn Shelley is headmistress of Dean Close Pre-Preparatory School, www.deanclose.org.uk

Are you an Building Healthy Self-Esteem LAT parent? You have probably heard of Blended Families but have you heard of Living Apart Together (LAT)? This is a term used to describe an emerging form of family structure, where couples, with and without children, are in an intimate relationship but do not live together for some or all of the time. Around 10% of adults in Britain, a quarter of all those not married or cohabiting, are in a steady relationship but do not live with their partner. Research suggests that there are many reasons why partners may be LAT. Researchers found that around a third of LATs live apart because they feel they are not yet ready to live together, although many hope to do so in the future. A further third choose to live apart because they view it as emotionally safer, or a better way to manage other commitments, such as those to children, family and friends or work. Some may see it as a ‘last chance saloon’ to preserve a faltering relationship.

By Dr Elise Kearney,

The remaining third are not able to live together due to circumstances outside the relationship itself – including financial reasons or working or studying in different places. As part of its research into the changing dynamic of British family structures, The Birbeck London University is currently inviting parents who may be living apart together to take part in an online survey, Family Life You. Respect and approval, or ‘esteem’ for all aspects of the self are key to: psychological wellbeing; good relationship building; feeling a sense of belonging; and having the ability to be compassionate towards all living things. Healthy self-esteem allows people to face challenges in life and grow whilst people with low self-esteem tend to avoid the challenges for fear of failure or being overwhelmed.

Whilst self-esteem tends to remain stable through childhood and equal for boys and girls, there is a marked decrease in selfesteem as children enter adolescence. This decline is particularly significant for teenage girls. We know that the overall decline is due to the big developmental leap at this time. Young people are spending less time with their families and it’s a time when the approval of peers becomes a more important determinant of self-esteem than parenting. The dramatic drop in self-esteem for girls at this time is linked to puberty and body image. Teenage girls with lower selfesteem are more vulnerable to perceptions of ideal body images

particularly those portrayed in social and general media. Children build self-esteem in their families. Research has shown that ‘happy parents’ or ‘care-givers’ make for ‘happy children’. There are a number of strategies we can use to build healthy self-esteem in our children and families. Show Acceptance Showing acceptance of all family members as unique individuals supports children in listening to and being able to trust their own voice. In Practice: Encourage children to express their own opinions and feelings about their lives. Help your child to learn that having a different opinion or feeling about something is okay. Mealtimes can be a great opportunity for this, aim to eat together as often as possible. Research shows that children who eat regular family meals together have higher vocabulary, higher self-esteem, higher academic performance and a lower risk of substance misuse. Allow Independence Encourage all family members, regardless of age, to accomplish age appropriate tasks independently. Children and

For You, Your Child And Your Whole Family In Practice: Take 10 to 15 minutes a day with your children doing what they would like to do (within reason!). See if you can be entirely led by them for that short space of time and give your undivided attention. It doesn’t sound like long but it can be a challenge to work this into your day – have a go! Remember to also make time for your significant other and yourself. Research shows that a happy parental relationship is strongly linked to healthy self-esteem in children. Provide Emotional Education Support children in understanding and making space for emotions (for example ‘I wonder if that film made you feel sad?’). This gives children a good command of emotions rather than feeling overwhelmed by them. Helping children to recognise, understand and manage feelings from an early age significantly reduces instances of depression and anxiety through the rest of adolescence.

teenagers can develop a ‘have a go attitude’ and reduce avoidance due to fear of failure. In Practice: Involve children in household tasks even when it might mean that they take a little longer with little or nervous hands! Use this time to promote positive can do attitudes. Create Special Time Make time for one another and demonstrate how special each family member is by listening without any distraction. Approving, responsive and nurturing parents are more likely to build high levels of self-esteem in children and in each other.

In Practice: Have a go at developing an emotional vocabulary for your family and practice commenting on feelings. Be brave, have a go and watch the positive effect it has on family members. Remember to give lots of verbal praise for behaviour you would like to see again. Tell them what you are happy about.

In Practice: Teach children about healthy eating and exercise and involve them in cooking and meal planning. Planting vegetables with children (in pots if space is limited) can be a great joint activity. Put a high value on sleep in your family. Research shows that children who get enough sleep have better brain function, better focus at school, greater creativity, reduced risk of obesity and are better able to manage emotions. Explore and understand the way the media portrays body image with children, particularly girls as they approach adolescence. Remember everyone enjoys physical praise even teenagers can still enjoy a cuddle! Make Time to Play! Making time and space for play and having fun together boosts the whole familys self-esteem and is also key to child development. In Practice: Take a trip to the local park together and jump on a swing. It’s easy to forget what fun that can be when you haven’t done it for a while. Take an hour after dinner to bring out a board game that the whole family can play or play hide and seek together. These things don’t have to happen every day but maybe once or twice a week would be fun.

Remember that special circumstances Love your Body (parental separation, adopted and Teach children to respect and love their fostered children, a school or house physical body from a young age. Learning move, death in the family, illness in the to be in tune with the ‘messages’ that family, learning difficulties, physical their bodies give them will empower disability etc.) make these strategies even them, particularly in a western culture more key to the healthy development of which does not always ‘esteem’ the body. self-esteem.

All Stars Cricket: Eight Weeks Of Fun

Teaching Children That Losing Is An Opportunity I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed – Michael Jordan. Which side do you fall on - teaching children to win at all costs or giving every child a ‘Participation Medal’? The age-old debate will never go away. Having coached children for over 10 years, I have heard arguments on both sides. Some adults think it’s more important to teach children to win at all costs and that anything short is a failure. I remember receiving an email from one parent incredulous that I rotated positions at 5-0 up in a game. His opinion was that we should be teaching 9-year-olds to “crush” the opposition! Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff, the ex-England Cricket captain, talked on his podcast about how at the Olympics there should not be medals for 2nd or 3rd place as he does not agree with anything less than a prize for the winner. Then on the other hand we have the side that believes we should simply play for fun and that everyone should receive an award for trying. As coaches, even though we want children to try their best, receiving a medal for this doesn’t quite seem right. Should we teach our children to win or take part? Or both? I think there is another side that is just as important, if not more - teaching the children to learn how to cope with a loss. I can already hear the gasps out there. I am not talking about teaching children to lose. A will to win is a skill which should be cultivated and encouraged. However, the benefits of how to cope with a loss should not be underestimated. We have all seen young players burst into tears after losing. I know I did many a time when I was growing up. Being weak, slow and made fun of by my peers, it’s no surprise. Parental and coach pressure can also cause this behavior. I was never good enough to be called up for a team when I was a kid. As a result, I was never coached to learn how to lose that would benefit me. I never asked the questions “why did they beat me?” “What do I need to do better next time?” “What can I improve on?” As adults, we can help children ask these questions. I use an app 10

that allows the players that I coach to evaluate themselves after every game they play. It asks them to rate their performance, work rate and team work, as well as having them describe what they did well and what they need to improve on. Win, lose or draw, this mental switch has seen the players I have worked move on to a higher level of performance and competition. This mentality doesn’t just apply to sport. Empathy and coping with negative experiences are direct traits that come with learning how to lose well. Realising that not winning is no great shame is also something that cannot be underestimated. Some people go through their whole life so scared to lose, that when it finally happens (and it does to everyone, in one form or another) they don’t know how to react. Former UFC Champion Ronda Rousey became a virtual recluse after losing her undefeated record. Even now, her demeanor becomes extremely defensive when interviewed about that defeat. Take this common situation. A child takes a shot in a game of football and blazes it over the bar. We hear it all the time with children in sessions, ‘I’m rubbish’, ‘I can’t shoot with my left foot’, ‘I’m not very good at that shot’, ‘I can’t do this’ – all empty statements that don’t help with the big question: Why? What we try to do is teach the children to take the defeat/ mistake/loss as a learning possibility – Why did you lose? Why did that person beat you? Why did you miss that shot? Our aim is to allow the child to see the mistake/loss as an opportunity rather than a failure. Though it takes a lot of repetition, questioning why things happened rather than saying “well done for taking part” or “if you’re not first you’re last” sees a huge change in a child’s behavior during activities. You can almost guarantee then next time they shoot they will try and correct their technique for a better outcome. All parents want their children to learn how to work both hard and smart to be successful in their lives. Learning defeat allows for children to understand the importance of those traits. Sport is the clearest way to highlight this. Andy Beeston is from Football Fun Camps. He runs football and multi-sports camps during the school holidays. It’s National Mills Weekend In May On Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 May, National Mills Weekend takes place across the UK, with more than 300 windmills and watermills opening their doors to the public. This annual festival of our milling heritage is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to explore their local mills. Participating mills include many not normally open to the public, with a range of special events and family-friendly activities. Until the advent of the steam engine, wind and watermills provided the only source of power for many different processes - from making flour, paper and cloth to hammering metal and extracting oils. You can explore mills that produced, or still produce these products, some restored to working order, some derelict, some still working commercially.
