Visit the theatre this Festive Season Anvil Arts in Basingstoke has two great shows for you to enjoy during the festive season. From Wednesday 2 to Saturday 12 December, Tall Stories presents The Snow Dragon at The Haymarket. With a running time of one hour, story-telling, comedy and songs create a magical, mysterious world for those aged three and over, and is a great introduction to live theatre for little ones. Billy is a spoilt young goat whose parents give him everything he wants. And what he doesn’t get from them, he steals from his friends. On New Year’s Eve, Billy is looking forward to the annual visit of the legendary Snow Dragon, who will bring him even more goodies during the night. But when Billy bumps into some hungry wolves in the forest, New Year’s Day seems a long way off. Find out how Billy escapes - and whether the Snow Dragon will bring him a present. Has Billy been naughty or nice? From Thursday 10 December to Sunday 3 January, don’t miss The Anvil’s traditional family pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk.

Old Basing to be twinned with ‘Sylvanian Village’ Hampshire village wins competition organised by toy brand Sylvanian Families The village of Old Basing has won a national competition to be twinned with ‘Sylvanian Village’, the fictional world within the toy range Sylvanian Families. The competition was organised to mark the 30th anniversary of this iconic 1980s toy - which uses woodland animals and dolls houses to engage children in imaginative play. Over 1,300 fans across the UK voted for the village that they would like to see ‘twinned’ with Sylvanian Village. Entry requirements included: a picturesque village with a school, set in a rural area near woodland, with a friendly, caring community. A special ‘twinning’ ceremony will be held in Old Basing in September. The Sylvanian Families characters will visit the village to present the parish council with a “Twinned with Sylvanian Village” sign. The Old Basing Infant School will also receive 30 Sylvanian Families toy sets, a year’s free membership to the Sylvanian Families Premium Fan Club for its pupils, plus an additional £500 worth of toys to sell at its village fete to raise money for the school.
News Can you care for your child in an Emergency? Want to know the secret of a happy and healthy life? Don’t we all? Walking is one way to improve both. Anne Murrill, Organiser - Basingstoke Walking Group, explains: Believe it or not we were designed to walk. Putting one foot in front of the other is what we should be doing more of. It’s good for you. It’s a gentle, low-impact form of exercise that’s suitable for all ages and abilities. Walking is proven to strengthen your heart; lower disease risk; keep weight down; help prevent dementia and osteoporosis; tones you; boosts vitamin D; gives energy and makes you happy. Walking is also a very sociable activity – joining a walking group and meeting friends to walk and chat with is a great way to banish feelings of isolation and loneliness whilst enjoying the countryside and the wildlife. It’s also safer to walk in groups, especially for ladies. There are many active walking groups in Hampshire including Ramblers and Basingstoke Health Walks (see website details below). My group, Basingstoke Walking Group, offers a full regular programme of walks to suit all tastes and abilities usually with a pub, restaurant or tea room at the end. I provide short midweek and evening walks, 5 to 7 miles or longer and walking weekends. On Bank Holidays I add treasure hunts to the programme. Fun for all the family. So come on, get walking, and join me in the local countryside sometime soon! For more information or to join the group see www.meetup. com/The-Walking-Group/ or ring 07565 950087. You can also find us on Facebook. Parents left in the dark over new rules Changes in the workplace voucher system has led to confusion among many UK parents, with some not being fully informed about the childcare support changes. The system has previously allowed working parents to be able to pay childminders with vouchers worth up to £243 per month. Parents could ‘buy’ these with their pre-tax salary. This has meant a saving of up to £930 per family. From this autumn, however, the scheme will change. Families will now claim a ‘top-up’ payment, which means they can claim support worth 20p for each £1 they spend on child care. Single parents who earn below £150,000 or couples who earn less than £300,000 (£150,000 per partner) can claim, though families with one parent who stays at home are not eligible. The worry for many is that, with parents having to work out the rules and apply for payments themselves, some will slip through the loop. In the past, many employers helped with this. There is also confusion because the voucher system will remain but there is confusion as to whether families will have to re-apply. At the time of going to print, we were trying to get an answer from the Government on this point.

Work & Life Work flexibly and be happy! The stress of parenthood plus working is undeniable – we are being tugged in two directions and sometimes it is difficult to work out how to juggle our lives. Flexible working can be a solution for some. Part-time work is available at times, too – though remuneration may not be great and the timing might not suit family life. The solution found by an increasing number of people is to run their own business and, especially for those who haven’t done that – or even thought about it before - a franchise is becoming a more and more popular way to take control of your work hours, experience fun and satisfaction in your daily work, win back those commuting hours and earn an income that provides enough to live on.
covering most large towns and cities and their surrounding areas, bringing useful information for parents on parenting, children’s activities, family days out, education and a huge amount of local What’s On information both online and in the magazine.
Franchises exist for all sorts of activities, many of them offering services to young families, parents and children, while some are geared to adult activities, such as local art classes. But all are suited to parents looking for a new way to create a career and experience the financial rewards of being their own boss.
Families Hampshire North launched in March 2014 and, whilst one of the newest magazines in the franchise, in less than two years has become well established with the potential to expand further and the editor is now looking for someone who can take it on to the next level, building on the excellent relationships with advertisers and growing the local magazine, working the printed version seamlessly with its website and with all social media.
Families Hampshire North is a franchise, one of 40 Families magazines nationwide and part of a great brand that first launched in 1990 in south west London. From there it has spread, now

Dad’s in charge New rules have completely changed the way parents can take time off after having a baby By Judy Yorke Just a few years ago, dads could only take a fortnight off to spend with their newborn. While 2011 saw the introduction of increased paternity leave, it was only available when mums went back to work. But new Shared Parental Leave regulations give eligible parents across the UK flexibility to juggle childcare between them. After a compulsory two weeks off for the mother, parents can share up to 50 weeks of leave in the baby’s first year (or the first year of adoption). The law applies to same sex couples and those bringing up a child together, even if it’s from a previous relationship. Taking it in turns How you split the leave is up to you. It will depend on who earns more, who feels their career will be least affected by taking time off, and who wants to be at home. Significantly, for the first time, dads can take the year off while mums return to work. The leave can be taken in blocks (up to three each) so you can alternate time off if one of you has a particularly busy time at work before resuming parental leave. It’s a big advantage if you don’t want to be away from work for too long. Some dads might want to return to work in the early months when mums are breastfeeding. Once babies start on solids, it can be easier for dads to be fully hands-on so they might want to take time off then, either in one go or in several blocks.
Sharing the load One big advantage is that parents can be off at the same time. Many mums need their partner’s support in those first magical, exhausting, bewildering weeks and can dread their partner going back to work after a fortnight. In these cases, a few more weeks with both of you at home could help enormously. Having time off together can benefit families with older children while everyone is getting used to a new member of the family. It means one parent can focus on them and make sure they don’t feel left out. This can also be important in the school holidays when day trips with a newborn are tricky. Can you afford it? Finances will play an important part in the decision. While you can share up to 50 weeks, only 37 are paid. You will receive £139.58 per week or 90% of your average weekly earnings, whichever is lower. See more on www.gov.uk/government/topical-events/sharedparental-leave

Back to School Too Much, Too Soon? Are we pushing our kids too far by signing them up to lots of clubs and classes - or offering valuable advantages? By Sally J. Hall Most parents agree; kids need to be stimulated and to have plenty going on to stop them getting bored. Mums and dads are only too aware of the value of after-school clubs to ensure their children are well looked after and stimulated. But with a vast range on offer, it can be tempting to sign them up for a different activity every evening. Piano on Monday, gymnastics on Tuesday, maths on Wednesday – and so it goes on, with more over the weekend. Of course we might not all be able to offer our child such a packed schedule – finances alone might make this impossible – but there’s no doubt that a couple of well-chosen activities can be great for giving your child an insight into areas that the school curriculum can’t cover. What age is best to start classes? Early years: They get very tired so keep outside activities to a minimum. For excess energy, a good run in the park is great for letting off steam. An art, singing or baby ballet-type class with the emphasis on play would be great. Infant school: Add a low-key activity to look forward to. Singing, music making, dancing, simple sports and swimming are all great choices for little ones. Junior school: As dreaded tests loom, add an educational class if your child is struggling with one subject. Extra maths or reading tuition can make all the difference to confidence. Senior school: It’s easier to add activities as energy and independence increases. As more exams come up, be flexible about allowing them to miss or drop activities. What’s on the menu? Mini Mozart? Many parents are convinced their child is a musical genius – and they may be right – but pushing a child into playing an instrument can put them off for life! From seven years, a 30 or 45 minute class
Stagecoach Theatre Arts The ‘back to school’ signs are everywhere, reminding us all that the end of the summer is nigh and the evenings of after-school boredom are set to return. What if there was something new to look forward to in September? Well, there is! Stagecoach Theatre Arts would like to invite new students for a two-week trial at their Basingstoke West Friday school, starting 4th September where theatre arts classes are taught by industry professionals in the welcoming new studio facilities at The Costello School. Early Stages (ages 4-6) classes run alongside the main Stagecoach schools, where young people learn skills in each of the three Musical Theatre disciplines of singing, dancing & drama, so it is an easy step when it is time to transfer to the next stage.
is plenty, with ten minutes of daily practice. This can increase slowly. Fitness Fanatic Sports and dance are great for fitness and flexibility and the chance to play with teams from other areas – though for younger kids, avoid classes that are too aggressive or pressurised. Be prepared for many hours spent track, field or pool-side if your child loves sports. Mastermind If one subject is a struggle, one-to-one tuition can pay dividends and if your child wants to study a particular subject later on, it can be invaluable. Mini Thespian Kids thrive in acting and singing classes and may go on to theatre school. It builds confidence and the ability to express themselves. Alternatives For every kind of child, there’s an activity to suit, so check the clubs and classes section of the Families website to see what’s near you. From archery to zoology, you’ll find something they love. What do clubs and classes offer your child? • A chance to mix with children from other schools and areas; this will widen your child’s social circle • A chance to take part in artistic, musical and sporting activities not offered at school • A potential career • Teamwork skills • Increases confidence and the ability to mix • The ability to develop persistence and patience But – play is important too Educational Psychologist Peter Gray wrote in the Independent that we should allow our children more time for playing. He believes that more time in the classroom and less at play can be detrimental, because kids miss out on life skills that can only be learned through play. “Judgement, wisdom and creative ability.… come from life experiences,” he says. “For children, those experiences are embedded in play.”
Main Stages (ages 6 – 16) classes are split in three age appropriate groups, where young people learn new skills in the three disciplines. The shy and apprehensive are nurtured until they find their feet and voice, whilst at the same time developing and channelling those with bundles of talent, confidence and energy. If you would like to reserve a place, visit the Stagecoach Theatre Arts website: www. stagecoach.co.uk/basingstokewest or call 01264 353008 to speak to school principal, Helen Watts.

Back to School
Which secondary is right for my child? Joanna Moorhead on the 20 things you need to know when choosing ‘big school’ 1. Make your own mind up. It’s amazing how many parents never even look round a school because of what they’ve heard. A school that doesn’t suit another family could be just right for yours. 2. Listen to your child’s feelings as well as your own. Choosing his or her primary was down to just you and your partner; but your 10 or 11-year-old deserves a say. 3. Use open days wisely. If you can, go to a daytime visit (especially to a school that seems a strong contender) because you’ll see it in working mode. 4. Nothing advertises a school like its pupils. Do they seem happy? Are they polite? If you have time, hang around in the area at home time. Are they well-behaved? 5. How about the staff – do they seem happy and fulfilled working there? Take opportunities to chat to them. 6. Listen to your instincts. If a school doesn’t feel right, move on. You don’t have to explain yourself or your reasons for doing so to anyone else (although you do, of course, need to discuss it with your child if your instincts are different). 7. Don’t get bogged down in the detail: what you’re aiming to get is a sense of the school. Does it feel happy, productive, calm? Is there a sense of order and caring? These things matter more than the nitty-gritty. 8. Think about your child’s talents and interests and ponder carefully whether they’ll be catered for. But think too about what the school offers that might be harder to pick up at home. We’re a family of journalists, where literacy is easier for us as parents; so I’m glad my girls went to a school that specialised in maths and science, even though these weren’t their strongest subjects. 9. Pay attention to what’s on the walls – and not just the artwork. What are children being warned about, or encouraged to do? Are there any school visits being advertised? What clubs seem to be thriving? 10. Look at the school’s league tables, but don’t pin everything on them. Read the Ofsted report too and pay particular attention to how the school has done over time. If it’s had a dip, are there signs of improvement or suggestions that it could turn round?
14. Y ou’re bound to talk to other parents, and you want to talk to other parents, but don’t get pulled along by their tide. Do your own research and develop your own views: knowledge is power. 15. Keep telling yourself (because it’s true!) that there is no perfect school. Every school has strengths and weaknesses. There’s more than one school that can be right for your child. 16. W hen the time comes to fill in the forms, allow yourself lots of time and do it extremely carefully. There may be supplementary forms, and there may be complicated arrangements for giving them in (especially if you’re applying to faith schools). If you find it all too confusing, talk to your child’s primary teacher or primary head, or call the education department at your local authority. 17. H ave a plan of action for what you’ll do if you don’t get the school you’re hoping for. Just having that plan will make you feel more relaxed. 18. R emember that there’s a lot of movement in the first few weeks after places are allocated, and many children get in from waiting lists. 19. D on’t underestimate how much hard work an appeal can be, or how emotionally draining. That’s not to say don’t do it: just be prepared. 20. R emember that, at the end of the day, parents make more difference to a child’s future than a school does. Even if your child doesn’t get into your first choice of school (and one in seven didn’t last year) your attitude to that could be a much bigger factor in what happens next for your child than the school itself. Have confidence, first and foremost, in your child. And believe that, together, you will work things out if and when you come up against problems.
11. Where do pupils go on to from this school? You want to see at least some youngsters doing well academically and aiming for good courses at top universities. 12. Go to the head teacher’s talk and take your notebook. This is an important part of the event: not only do you need to pick up on the head’s attitude and values and what matters most to him or her, but you also need to pay special attention to anything that’s said about the entrance criteria. Understanding that is the crucial next stage. 13. If you like a school, do your homework about whether your child fits its entrance requirements. However much you love the school, and however much you think your child would thrive there, you’ll only get a place if you fulfil the criteria. Read the school’s entrance policy through very, very carefully. If you don’t fulfil the requirements, could you change something so you do? If not, move on: there’s no point in wasting a choice or railing against something you can’t change.

Yateley Manor At Yateley Manor the development of the Prep School Baccalaureate (PSB), with its focus on rigorous academic standards, coupled with a broad and balanced curriculum, delivers an education for the twenty first century. The PSB focuses on the vital skills of independence, collaboration and leadership through pupils’ thinking & learning, communication and review & improvement and its ethos is embedded throughout the school. The School’s emphasis on educating the whole child is supported by a broad enrichment programme. Activities include chess, dance, horse riding, drama and water sports and the school is always keen to find new opportunities for children to fulfil their potential. Innovative and committed staff are the school’s most valuable resource and there is a strong culture of continuing professional development with staff regularly attending external courses, as well as weekly after school workshops and sharing best practice. Staff embrace the different learning styles of children and incorporate varied approaches into lessons. The result is that children may spend a day being Vikings, visiting a Hindu Temple, creating maths games to bolster understanding of probability or fractions, or cooking during science to reinforce the difference between physical and chemical changes. The newly developed Woodland Learning Area is an inspirational educational environment which gives younger children the freedom to explore nature in a hands-on and child-led approach. This helps build confidence, independence and self-esteem as well as giving children new life skills. If you would like to discover more about all that Yateley Manor has to offer contact Tanja on 01252 405500.

Back to School Glorious Mud! Jubilee Day Nursery is passionate about the outdoors Take advantage of a Free Trial at your local Kumon study centre At your local study centre, Kumon offers individualised worksheetbased maths and English study programmes which are tailored to all ages and abilities. Established for over 50 years, the Kumon programmes enable children to develop their study skills and confidently tackle advanced work. Kumon develops children through the acquisition of independent learning skills, rather than teaching in the conventional sense. Through daily study of the Kumon programmes, your child will develop the ability to learn for themselves so they do not become dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others. The Kumon study centres listed below are offering a two-week Free Trial (14 days) for new students enrolling between Monday 21 September to Saturday 31 October. Take advantage of this opportunity and find out what your child can achieve through the Kumon Maths and English Programmes. For more information, please contact the Basingstoke North, Basingstoke South or Fleet study centres. Please refer to the advertisement on the inside front cover of this magazine for their contact details. Alternatively, please call 0800 854 714 or visit kumon.co.uk.
Children don’t need experts to tell them that mud is good for them and we’re sure you’ll have nostalgic memories of making potions, flower perfume and the perfect mud pie! That’s why we have created our very own mud kitchen for budding inventors and creatives of the future. We are extremely proud of our outdoor learning environment. Established over 25 years ago, we provide a superb education and outstanding facilities - with access to 53 acres of open countryside, private woodland and even our very own farm. Playing and learning outside is a daily activity for our children from trips to the woods, Forest School for our older children, climbing, sliding, digging in the sand and experiencing all the great outdoors has to offer. Our highly experienced team provides care for babies from 3 months through to pre-schoolers with the best possible start to develop intellectually, emotionally and socially to ensure they achieve their full potential in a loving and secure environment. What do people say about us? ‘We cannot speak highly enough of the staff and general experiences our son has had the pleasure of taking part in; a perfect place for little people to start their journey into education.’ (Jubilee parent) ‘The staff provide children with a wealth of opportunities to develop their skills across all areas of learning.’ (Ofsted) ‘Jubilee children come to school with confidence and are independent young learners.’ (Reception Class Primary Teacher) Open 51 weeks of the year from 7.30am-6.00pm
TomTag – versatile picture schedules Children who are competent in self-help skills have more chance of success both at school and in life. Children who know how to get themselves dressed, when to wash their hands and brush their teeth and how to organise their belongings will benefit from greater confidence and independence. These skills can be taught very effectively by using visual timelines that break down a routine into manageable steps and use pictures to show the child what to do at each stage.
We offer discounts for Armed Forces and NHS workers. We strongly recommend a visit to see first-hand the fantastic opportunities we can offer your child and to meet our team. To book an appointment or to receive a prospectus, give us a call on 01189 701600 or email us at info@jubileedaynursery.co.uk. Jubilee Day Nursery, Paddock View, Rectory Road, Padworth Common, Reading, Berkshire RG7 4JD
Invented by two mums, the TomTag ‘I can do it’ range from Orkid Ideas makes creating these types of checklists quick and easy. Start with a detailed step-by-step list for each skill then make the prompts more general or use fewer of them as each step is mastered. Each TomTag set includes a wide range of symbols and each tag can be reused again and again giving as much flexibility as possible. Use TomTag every day and soon your children will be saying “I can do it” too! www.orkidideas.com 01904 213 123 We have three ‘I can pack my bag for school’ TomTag sets to give away. Each set includes 6 blank tags, 40 blank buttons, 1 attachment loop and a pack of My School Kit stickers. To enter, go to www.familieshampshirenorth. co.uk/competitions before midnight on 24th October.

Halloween Trick or Treat Etiquette By Justina Gapper If you and your children are going trick or treating for the first time, here are a few guidelines: What age can children start? There’s no minimum age! Many parents enjoy dressing up and venturing out with their toddlers, whilst others take babies along in prams with older siblings. What are the rules? Only approach homes that have a visible “invitation” – whether it’s a pumpkin, lantern or other Halloween decorations displayed. Don’t knock if the lights are off and don’t knock more than once. Alternatively, you may decide to knock only on doors of friends and neighbours that you have pre-warned of the visit! What if my children don’t like the treat? Make sure your children are briefed to say “please” and “thank you” in addition to “trick or treat,” plus they should try to be appreciative of any treat they are given.

What’s the trick all about? The word “trick” refers to the “threat” to perform mischief on the homeowners or their property if no treat is given. These days it is uncommon to have raw egg splattered over your driveway by pranksters, but it’s safest not to answer the door to raucous groups of older teenagers, or if you suspect your visitors are not well-intentioned. If you are asked for a “trick,” what should you do? One harmless but funny idea is to get the homeowner to close their eyes and put their hand in a witch’s hat or toy cauldron filled with a gooey mess or plastic spiders, rubbery worms and insects! And remember to have fun!
