News Cinderella at The Anvil this Christmas Book a festive treat and buy tickets to Cinderella at The Anvil in Basingstoke this Christmas. The cast includes Katy Ashworth from CBeebies, who will play the Fairy Godmother and Keith Chegwin as Buttons. Keith became a household name in the 1970s, presenting the television shows Cheggers Plays Pop and Multi-Coloured Swap Shop, and has rarely been off our screens since, with Dancing On Ice his most recent success. Once again, The Anvil teams up with UK Productions for a magical, traditional pantomime for the whole family to enjoy. Producer Martin Dodd, from UK Productions, added “Cinderella is the most magical of pantomimes and everybody’s favourite. I am delighted with the line-up this year and I know that Keith, with all his years of experience, and children’s favourite Katy will bring loads of fun and comedy to the show, not to mention boundless energy! We can promise something for everyone with the wickedest (but best dressed) Ugly Sisters in the business and the sensational Shetland Ponies live on stage.” Tickets are now on sale, so call The Anvil box office on 01256 844244. For the most up-to-date information, see the Anvil Arts website www.anvilarts.org.uk.
Are you fit for motherhood? Studies suggest that keeping fit during pregnancy can result in shorter, less exhausting labour, as well as building the endurance you need to get through it, with fewer medical interventions and maybe even less pain. You will also keep unnecessary body fat off if you’re eating healthily and avoiding sugar! Basingstoke’s leading experts in women’s health & fitness, The FitMama Studio, advise that pregnant and postnatal women exercise moderately for 20-30 minutes each day. It is best to avoid tummy exercises known to damage the muscles of the abdomen during and after pregnancy, and to focus on pelvic tilts, shoulder bridge and a special form of diaphragmatic breathing called Hypopresives. Impact exercises in the year after giving birth are more dangerous than you might realise, and you should spend at least 6 months repairing your pelvic floor and abdominal muscles before embarking on any form of impact exercise, such as running, boot camp or body combat. Eating for motherhood is no different to eating like an athlete: your job is tough and you need a well-balanced eating plan and good quality multivitamins to help your body recover from pregnancy and prevent illness and injury associated with sleep deprivation. Look after yourself; you are the only mummy your baby has! “The FitMama Method” by Marie Behenna (Souvenir Press) is available from Amazon. www.fitmamastudio.com Get a FREE yoga or pilates class from The FitMama Studio on presentation of Families Hampshire North magazine!

People stuck in the debt trap are set to get free help, thanks to a local church opening a debt help centre. Harvest Church has partnered with charity Christians Against Poverty (CAP) to bring its award-winning service to the Alton and Four Marks area, working alongside other local churches. CAP offers a uniquely in-depth, caring service to people with spiralling personal debt - regardless of their age, gender, faith or background. Every client is visited in their own home, the charity does all the negotiating with creditors, and local volunteers offer support to each person face-to-face until the day they are debt free. The Alton Debt Help Centre was launched on Sunday June 15th. To find out more about CAP, see www.capuk.org or call 0800 328 0006.
News Skiing holiday tips from Chilly Powder Paul and Francesca Eyre moved to Morzine 18 years ago, started a family ski company and had 3 children. Here’s their advice on the most important things to consider when taking your family on a ski holiday: • D on’t rush to high altitude resorts because children can sometimes get altitude sickness. • Finding a resort with an easy, short airport transfer will be a blessing. And try to sit as near to the front of the transfer bus as possible - then there’s less chance of the windy roads making your children sick! • It’s pointless wasting money on expensive ski clothes for your children - they’ll only outgrow them by next year. Borrow what you can from friends or try TK Maxx in September and October. • If your children are attending ski school or childcare, make sure you name their clothes. • If you’re taking a pushchair to use during your holiday, take one with large wheels as standard chairs will be impossible to push in the snow. • Don’t forget that sun block is just as important on a winter holiday as it is in the summer. Take sun block spray so that you don’t have to take your gloves off to rub it in! www.chillipowder.com

School time!
Over the next six pages we have some useful advice for you about engaging with your child’s school, why after school clubs are important, product reviews, a competition, and a directory of independent school open days and featured clubs and classes!
How to create a healthy dialogue with your school or nursery by Hannah Hunter Research shows that the better your relationship with your child’s school, the more they will enjoy learning and do well.
Remember that teachers are human. They sometimes make mistakes, so try to forgive them for it.
However it’s often impossible to know what really goes on at school – children are not very forthcoming when it comes to recounting their day. If they do raise any issues, or if you sense something is amiss, it can be difficult to know how to broach the subject with school.
Helping out in school
As both a parent and a primary teacher, I know how hard it can be to strike the right balance. If you’re meeting a teacher outside of parents’ evening or class surgeries, it’s because there is a problem. These meetings can easily become tense, with both ‘sides’ on the defensive.
Parent helper Helping out in class can be fun and rewarding. Research shows that having a parent who volunteers improves a child’s experience of school. Organise a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check - you can then volunteer regularly or as a one-off.
Here are a few tips for successful communication: Assume the best of your child’s teacher. They are trained professionals who understand the curriculum and child development. They ultimately want the same as you – a happy child who is learning. Let teachers know if there are problems at home. You don’t have to go into graphic detail, just tell them if something’s happened which may affect your child’s behaviour. Please don’t assume that your child always tells the truth! After all, teachers don’t automatically believe what your child tells them about home. Remain calm and neutral. “Little Johnny came home rather upset about xxx, I wondered what your take on it is…”, rather than “Why did you shout at Little Johnny like that?” Mediation. If you have issues with a teacher’s conduct, and feel upset or angry, it’s best that an additional member of staff is present. Talk to the teacher first. Even negative feedback is appreciated. Going directly to the head is a bit like them phoning your boss whenever your child misbehaves!
Barfield Nursery “Outstanding” ISI Report 2013
Get an insight into how things are run and improve your relationship with the school by volunteering:
School trips If you’ve had the DBS check, this one is great for ingratiating yourself. On what is invariably a stressful day, a responsible parent helping out can be a lifesaver! Use your expertise Maybe there’s a school club that would fit your skill set or interests. If not, you could talk to the class or even do an assembly. One volcanologist parent at my son’s school did a legendary presentation including exploding volcanoes! Join the PTA Fostering closer home-school links, the PTA usually organise the school’s fundraising projects, from fetes to family quiz nights. Run by committee, they may include ‘class reps’ who pass on information from other parents in the class. School Governors Comprising parent governors and other community members, this group of elected volunteers helps to make management decisions, such as running buildings and budgets, supporting staff and setting discipline standards. It can be time-consuming, particularly if the school’s results are getting worse or it’s going through a big change like appointing a new head teacher, or joining with another school.

School time! Learning to choose your thoughts and feelings
When Charlie made a wish... by Megan Green illustrated by Alex Green
SC
By Megan Green, author of ‘When Charlie made a wish’ SM
We all have an inner script that has been given to us by family members, teachers, other children, society, the media, etc. The script is fearbased, makes us feel bad and play small, knocks our confidence and generally messes us up. We think it’s who we are because it’s in our head - and it’s doing the choosing. The good news is: we are NOT our script. We can learn to notice it and then go beyond it to choose our own thoughts/attitudes/beliefs/feelings and resulting actions. We take our power back and stop wasting energy on an internal civil war. Using this knowledge in my therapy practice has produced consistently outstanding results so I had to write a book to get the message out to a wider audience. Since publishing “When Charlie made a wish” I have been running 1-hour sessions in Hampshire and Berkshire primary schools. When a class is familiar with the book, the children work with me to each make a “script” and “heart voice” paper bag puppet. I then give the class various scenarios and every time the children are able to tell me what their two voices say. For instance, in response to, “Your friend is misbehaving”, every child’s script says something like, “That’s fun”, “Join in!” Their heart voice, however says, “Ignore them”, “Behave”. When asked, “What does your script do to you?” a Year 2 boy said, “It controls me”. Exactly! Just fast forward a few years when their dilemmas involve smoking, alcohol, drugs and underage sex and you’ll understand why I am keen to give children resources now to, a) recognise the two voices and b) then learn to choose. Noticing the script, knowing it’s not who you really are and then choosing, is the key to a happier life.

Treasure Baskets Yellow Dot Andover is very excited to share the new treasure baskets that the babies are exploring in the garden. Treasure baskets are designed for babies and young children to experiment in their own way, creating their own unique pathway of learning and discovery. Our new baskets have been put together using a range of safe objects that mimic some of the natural experiences that babies will later discover when exploring the outdoor environment. Items such as soft and hard woods, large pebbles, pine cones, large shells, giant pods and dried grasses all provide wonderful textures, are visually attractive, have varying weight, shape and temperature and when banged, scratched or shaken provide their own unique sound. Treasure baskets can be put together at home using items found around the house, the only restriction being that any items used are safe for your babies to explore so have fun and experiment! www.yellowdotnursery.co.uk/andover
Product Reviews By Sara Dawson, Editor
Vegesentials Vegesentials, the UK’s first raw fruit and vegetable drink brand, has expanded into the children’s market with the development of a new range called ‘Fresh Kids on The Go’. Designed by Mumpreneur founder, Patience Arinaitwe-Mugadu, the range is intended to help parents overcome the everyday struggle of encouraging children to eat fresh fruit and vegetables. It comes in three flavours – Groovy Beet & Strawberry, Cool Cucumber & Pineapple, and Cheeky Carrot & Peach. My daughter has tried all three and her favourite is the Groovy Beet & Strawberry, being less keen on Cool Cucumber & Pineapple that probably being more of an acquired taste! The chunky little bottles are perfect for small hands and just the right size for school lunch boxes. I’ve tried all three flavours and whilst I know there is a separate adult range I wouldn’t mind drinking these regularly myself! See www.vegesentials.co.uk for where to buy near you.
Flatbox-Lunchbox A lunch box which opens out into a placemat, and is machine washable – what a clever idea! We tried it on a day out and I was very impressed with the size of the placemat which covered a good chunk of picnic table which I then didn’t have to check for cleanliness first! It carries a lot, the handle is comfortable to hold, and the bright colours are appealing. It’s too big to fit into a briefcase or schoolbag, but if you don’t mind carrying a separate lunch bag this would be a very smart product to take to either work or school. If there is one downside it is price – at £27.50 this is not a cheap option – but being made out of the same material as wetsuits you would expect it to stand the test of time. Available in 8 colours from www.theniceststuff.com.

Why it’s important for children to do after school activities By Susan Tomlinson
Whether or not you reckon you might be raising the next Picasso or David Beckham, there’s no doubting the plusses for after school clubs. From ballet to basketball and art to archery, there’s an after school activity out there for every child. And the best thing about them is they’re brilliant for all sorts of reasons – not just learning a new skill. For a start, after school clubs give children the chance to let off steam outside of the classroom. When you consider that in many countries around the world, children don’t even start school until 6 or 7 years old, a full day in the classroom for youngsters can be a big ask. That’s why an alternative to the three R’s can be hugely rewarding. As clinical psychologist Dr Julie Fraser, puts it:
VOCABULARY FLASH CARDS
11+ VERBAL REASONING VOCABULARY FLASH CARDS Improve your verbal reasoning skills and achieve a higher 11+ score Cards specifically created from recognised 11+ material
www.vocabularyflashcards.co.uk
“It’s an opportunity for children to explore different talents. Not everyone is brilliant at academic subjects and it’s a chance for your children to shine outside of the classroom.” She adds: “Learning a new skill can also affect what happens in school – children feel more confident and able to try new tasks.” Certainly all the research shows this to be the case. Every leading study into extra curricular activities demonstrates that academic grades actually improve when children participate in outside school clubs. One 2005 study from the US actually showed that children who attended clubs performed much better in maths and verbal reasoning tests than children who didn’t. But children’s clubs are not only great for improving academic levels but for developing important life skills too.

“It’s brilliant for developing social skills, dealing with new environments, talking to different adults and mixing with different children,” says Dr Fraser. “But best of all, after school clubs are confidence building.” Team sports like football, rugby, and netball are not only brilliant for keeping children active but also helping them learn team work where they can begin to appreciate what’s good for the whole team, rather than just thinking of themselves. Competitive sports are also great for learning difficult life lessons

like being a gracious winner - and loser. But for team building clubs with a less competitive edge, you could consider Guides and Scouts. Learning a musical instrument is great for discovering the art of practice, patience and persistence. Drama clubs are great for shy children who learn to find their voice singing and acting alongside others, while ballet and dance is great for children to learn discipline and self-expression. The list is endless. There are clubs for almost anything you can imagine. Archery, chess, horse riding, computer clubs, film making and even circus skills are all proving popular alongside the more traditional arts and crafts, swimming, tennis and kung fu. There are clubs for nature lovers run by the Woodland Trust, BMX biking for tots, and even children’s yoga and tai chi. There’s so many to choose from, it’s tempting to try them all but it’s also important not to overburden children with too many activities. Frantically driving from one after school club to the next seems to be missing the point. New skills, team work and confidence building aside, the most important thing to think about when deciding which club to choose is surely the fun factor. After that, the trick is to stay involved. “It’s important to talk with the teacher, find out how they work and show an interest in the class,“ says Dr Fraser. “That way you can be sure your child really is enjoying the club, and you will begin to watch them flourish and grow.” See page 12 for information on featured clubs & classes, or our website www. familieshampshirenorth.co.uk/directory for a more comprehensive directory.
