News BCoT opens new shop in Basingstoke BCoT is delighted to announce the opening of their new shop, Vintage Treasures on Church Street, Basingstoke. The shop is run by Victoria Kennedy and her company, VJ Vintage. It stocks a wide range of vintage clothing and homeware as well as items sourced and designed by BCoT students. Victoria began her business predominantly online until she was approached by the College and asked to run the shop in partnership. She was delighted to have the chance to establish roots in the town and said: “This is an excellent opportunity to expand my business whilst allowing college students the chance to gain some valuable work experience in a retail environment. We currently have stock designed by Fashion Retail and Business students and are encouraging others to bring along anything vintage that we could put on our shelves!” As part of opening and launching the shop, Victoria worked with a team of talented Fashion Retail students to design the Vintage Treasures shop window. She was so impressed with their work that she has commissioned them to create all future windows. Vintage Treasures is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10am until 4:30pm.
Teddy Bears’ Picnic & Toddle On Wednesday 27th May, First Steps Nursery in Yateley’s children and parents took part in a sponsored toddle and teddy bears’ picnic to raise money for CHECT (Childhood Eye Cancer Trust). A child at their nursery was diagnosed with eye cancer as a baby and this was being successfully treated until unfortunately, a recent check-up showed the cancer had returned and he is now undergoing further treatment. The children and their teddies started the afternoon with a small assault course continuing with a toddle around the school grounds before finishing with a teddy bears’ picnic on the school field, as well as music, balls, bubbles and face painting. The nursery will be donating 75% of the proceeds from this event to CHECT. For more information on Childhood Eye Cancer Trust, see their website. www.chect.org.uk Sadly, following submission of this article the cancer in the little boy’s eye was found to have spread and he has since had surgery to remove his eye to prevent it spreading further.

Hampshire locals launch exciting new book in aid of children’s charity A select group of businesses in North Hampshire have been chosen by local residents to feature in a concierge-style book, known as “North Hampshire’s Little Gems”. The book has been created by a small group of local people supporting Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity, which supports families caring for a terminally ill or life threatened child. It showcases little-known or favourite shops, services and suppliers in North Hampshire ranging from restaurants and boutiques to photographers and florists, as well as a short comment from each contributor. “North Hampshire’s Little Gems” launched in April and all proceeds from the book will go to Rainbow Trust. Bigger, Bolder, Hattier! Wear A Hat Day takes place in classrooms across the country Together we are funding the fight and, thanks to more of you than ever, Wear A Hat Day 2015 was the biggest and hattiest yet. We are greatly indebted to the hundreds of schools and families from up and down the land who have taken part in our flagship fundraising campaign. For many of you, Brain Tumour Research is a cause that could not be closer to your hearts as you and those around you have been touched by this devastating disease. Your commitment to help us is much appreciated. We salute the efforts which have taken place in classrooms where young people, teachers, assistants, admin staff and parents have helped their pupils to bake cakes, make and find hats and in so doing discover they can have fun whilst supporting an important cause.
Parenting If You Forget Everything Else Remember This! Katharine Hill, mother of four grown up children and Director of the UK charity Family Care, debunks the myth of Supermum in her humorous and down to earth new book ‘If You Forget Everything Else Remember This’. Katharine says: “From that first angelic role in the nativity play to that first love, from broken hearts and best friendships to school bullies, life as a parent is an emotional roller coaster. And amidst the practical chaos of finding swimming goggles and making packed lunches, many of us long for a little wisdom to help us do the job well.” Here are a few bite-sized bits of wisdom extracted from Katharine’s book: There’s no point trying to be Supermum or Dad! Being a parent is one of the most important and challenging roles that we can have and deserves our very best efforts. But we need to dispel once and for all the myth of Supermum. And if we can acknowledge that parenting is not a spectator sport, it means that we can be free of the pressure to perform. Let’s lay down the comparisons, be real about both the joys and the challenges, decide how we want to parent in our particular family situation – and then simply do our best. Put your oxygen mask on first We’re all familiar with the aircraft safety announcement telling people to put their own oxygen masks on first before attending to their children; attending to our own needs first in an emergency means we have the air we need in order to help our children in the most effective way. As parents, our heartfelt desire to do the very best for our children can be all-consuming. If we are not careful, the result of pouring ourselves totally into our children can be that we neglect ourselves or fail to make time to invest in important adult relationships in our lives. Values are more often caught than taught While we need to be real and not pretend to be anything we are not, the truth is that our children are watching. They notice if we stop and buy a Big Issue and give the vendor dignity. They notice if we point out if we have been undercharged when paying for something. They notice how we treat our friends, parents, and colleagues. The values we live by will be caught rather than taught. We sometimes worry that our children aren’t listening to us, but the sobering truth is that not a word or an action is lost. If You Forget Everything Else Remember This by Katherine Hill retails at £7.50 and is available from Amazon.
We would love to have your company again next year, don’t forget to register at www.wearahatday.org.

Education How to cope with first day nerves (yours and theirs!) By Liat Hughes-Joshi You’ve bought the uniform, sewn on the nametapes and packed their book bag. Now the big first day is almost upon you, reduce the chances of tears at the classroom door with our starting school tips. A few days beforehand, ease them into a ‘school compatible’ routine If you’ve been enjoying the summer holidays with later nights and relaxed, lazy mornings, head towards the sort of getting up and bedtimes needed for school in advance of day one. It’ll be less of a shock than a sudden change.
Highlight the positives of school life Read stories about school together - try Lauren Child or Janet and Allan Ahlberg’s lovely books on the subject. Or recount tales of your own positive experiences (skip the anecdotes about the super-scary teacher and inedible lunches). Remind them, too, of the things they enjoyed at any settling-in visits, such as ‘ooh, you’ll be able to play with the dressing up box again!’
Pre-empt worries Your child could be anxious about classroom life but unable to articulate their concerns. Ask them how they’re feeling about it and listen out for anything that you can help explain. It could be, what to do if they need the loo during lessons, where you’ll be at picking up time or what happens if they don’t like lunch. Tell them that it’s absolutely fine to talk to the teacher if they’re scared or sad.
Check out the school run in advance A parent getting flustered because they’ve spent ten minutes trying to find parking or the right entrance to the building will not contribute to the calm first day vibe we’re after here.
Do a practice school run a couple of days before if it’s anything other than straightforward and make sure you know where to pick up from, as well as drop off.
On the morning, keep farewells short but sweet A quick hug will often be more reassuring than a ten minute parting ritual which makes it all seem a bigger deal than just a few hours apart. Avoid saying that you’ll miss your child too - it puts the idea in their head that they should miss you. If your little one is especially nervous, it can work well to give them a kiss on their hand to ‘keep’ in their pocket during the day.
Skip the mascara but remember a tissue It’s not just the children who can end up in tears - it’s normal for parents to feel emotional when they first send their reception child through those school gates. If you think you’re about to cry, do try and hold off until you’re out of sight of your child if possible. Most four-year-olds will be more likely to get upset if they see mum sobbing – they probably won’t understand that it’s because you’re proud/taken aback by how grown-up they suddenly look. But rest assured, if tears should roll, be it yours or your child’s, you won’t be the only ones and we promise no-one will remember in years to come! Liat Hughes Joshi is a parenting journalist and the author of four books including ‘New Old-fashioned Parenting’ and ‘How to Unplug Your Child’ (both published by Summersdale) and Raising Children: The Primary Years (Pearson).
