What’s Inside... Welcome to the May/June issue of Families Edinburgh – this issue marks our 11th birthday! Spring has sprung and summer is on its way. Happy days! This weekend as a family we managed a first - a spontaneous picnic on a sunny day. It sounds like such an easy, natural thing to do but we have never, ever, managed to execute it successfully in Scotland. We have the idea for a picnic; we gather the contents of the picnic; we make our way to the park or beach with all our goodies… and that’s when it all falls apart because by that time the sun has gone/the wind has picked up/it’s raining – or all three! Most picnics end up with us wrapped in the picnic blanket rather than lazing on it. But not this time! This time it all worked beautifully – and my Families Edinburgh birthday wish is for lots more days like that for everyone! Sarah, Editor and Local Mum

Family Fun at the Palace Paint a jester and see him leap into life, follow the palace mice and enjoy super interactive displays – history is fun at Stirling Castle. The completion of a £12 million project means there will be lots more to see and do. It all starts on June 4th and 5th with special celebrations for the reopening of the castle’s royal palace, now returned to how it might have looked when Mary Queen of Scots lived there as a girl. Visitors will meet costumed characters including lords, ladies, servants and guards. There are family-friendly displays in the undercroft, where children can meet our family of cartoon mice. Then there’s a new exhibition where you can come face to face with the knight and medieval lady whose skeletons were discovered by archaeologists. There are three shops to browse and a comfortable café serving cakes baked at the castle. For more information see www.stirlingcastle.gov.uk.

News from Edinburgh Montessori Arts School “We have been delighted by the wonderful response we have received regarding the acquisition of our new building in Liberton. As the fit-out work continues at Mill House we eagerly watch our beautiful, custom-built Montessori school comes together. As well as work being done inside the building, we are planning inspiring and imaginative designs for landscaping our outside environment, including a sensory garden and an enclosed play area, allowing the children freedom to explore and grow in our green and pleasant surroundings. We are proud to have been awarded the Bronze EcoSchool award at our current premises, and are delighted that the new building will provide us with even greater scope to develop our Nature School programme. The increase in classroom and outdoor space allows us to expand our range of services. From August we will offer part and full time sessions in our nursery and infant communities and will be co-ordinating a varied and exiting range of afterschool activities. Nicole Diamond came up with the idea for the Jack & Jill Market when she was pregnant and driving in the rain across Edinburgh to pick up a buggy from an internet ad. Promised to be in ‘excellent condition’ the buggy actually had a torn hood and a broken wheel. It was a wasted trip. ‘I thought: there has to be an easier way’ she says. ‘That’s why I set up the Jack & Jill Market, where mums can buy and sell everything they need for their kids, all on one day and all under one roof’. The busy markets offer mums a quick, easy opportunity to recycle and sell quality items which their children no longer use. Nicole explains, ‘Mums who sell at the markets manage their own stall, keep 100% of their profits, and they make an average of £150£300. Shoppers who come to the markets are collectively saving thousands of pounds on quality, nearly-new items like buggies, bikes, high chairs, toys, clothes, and much more.’ ‘My goal with the markets is to keep creating local jobs for local mums across Scotland, who want to manage their own Jack & Jill Markets.’ says Nicole. The next Jack & Jill Market will be on Sunday 8th May, 10.30 – 1.30pm at Meadowbank Sports Centre. To book a stall phone 01721 725 879 or visit www.jackandjillmarket.co.uk Green fingered staff and children at Butterflies Nursery in Musselburgh are practising their gardening skills caring for the plants and wildlife in their nursery garden. This helps to work up a super healthy appetite and one of the highlights of the children’s gardening project has been the successful vegetable growing for use in the nursery kitchen. This summer the children will also be growing their own herbs which will provide a sensory experience as well as providing tasty flavourings for their lunches. The children have also introduced nesting boxes for birds in the nursery garden and they are having a wonderful time spotting the different varieties of birds. Added to this are the simple log piles that encourage insects and bugs for discovery and watching in wonder as the nursery creates an outdoor haven for children to explore and delight in. The range of activities on offer at the nursery is amazing as staff encourage children to enjoy fresh air and develop a lifelong love of the great outdoors by offering a wide variety of resources and many fun and exciting learning opportunities in their outdoor areas.

Letting Agents Growing Though Customer Service. “It really helps when you love what you do” says Ewan Foreman, Managing Director of Edinburgh Letting Agents 1LET Limited who started the business with his wife Fiona in 2001. “When we set up the business we saw our future in property development and investment but the management business just kept growing and we now provide a range of residential and commercial property management services. In 2004 we employed our first member of staff. Since then the team has continued to grow and we now have a highly experienced and qualified team in place. Our landlords rely on a regular monthly income from their property to balance the books and so the service that we provide really makes a difference. The majority of our new business comes from existing clients who tell friends and family about 1LET and we like to think that speaks for itself. Providing the very best service that we can is good for our customers, good for our business and makes our work satisfying and enjoyable. We wouldn’t want it any other way” For more information about 1LET contact Ewan or Ken on 0131 476 5500. mail@1let.com; www.1let.com

Is Your Child Ready for Transition from Primary to Secondary School? If your son or daughter is in primary 7, very soon they will be getting ready to make the transition from the security of primary school where life is familiar and everyone knows each other, to secondary school where there may be 4 times as many pupils and every subject is taken in a different classroom with lots of unfamiliar faces. Most children moving onto secondary school will be excited, a bit nervous, but looking forward to the challenge. Many parents will be feeling emotional, a bit worried but hopeful that their child is ready to move onto the next chapter of his/her life…..

What if your child is not ready? Are you one of many parents who are having nightmares about the move to high school? Is your child struggling with homework and bringing home unfinished schoolwork, having difficulty reading/understanding questions and following instructions? Does your child find it difficult to construct sentences/stories and get them down on paper? Perhaps your child has difficulty with maths, concept of time, sequencing events and direction. Or maybe he/she is finding it difficult to focus and concentrate in the classroom, during sports activities and at home. Does your child shy away from social gatherings and struggle to form lasting friendships? Any of these difficulties can cause tension and stress at home, which leads to arguments, shouting and has a negative effect on the whole family. To the child involved this can be very distressing; confidence and self- esteem will be rock bottom and generally the attitude will be “I can’t do it, so what’s the point”. If your child is struggling with reading, writing, spelling, maths, concentration, and their confidence is low, now is the time to do something. Primary school age children can be more receptive to offers of help. Once a child starts secondary school, there are other difficulties to contend with. Puberty can create a variety of emotional, physical and social changes, which can make even the most sociable and friendly child into an antisocial, and grumpy teenager. If you can help your child to learn in primary school then that can make the transition to secondary school a much happier and positive period in their lives and yours.

Facts 40% of 11 year olds leave primary school struggling with reading, writing and arithmetic (House of Commons, Hansard Debate 23 Feb 2010). Dyslexia affects 10% of the population in the UK; 4% severely (British Dyslexia Association). Difficulties with learning can lead to children becoming the victims of bullying and being labelled “lazy and stupid” by their peers. Low self-esteem, difficulty forming friendships, stress, lack of confidence, and self-harming are some of the effects that a learning difficulty can have on our children. Negativity at school and at home cuts learning in half. Being positive and non-critical is so important to all children. Children with a learning difficulty may need to learn in a different way to realise their true intellectual potential. Encourage your child to embrace their individuality and recognise their strengths.

What YOU can do to help your child?

Where to go for help

1. Talk to them – find out what their worries, goals, ambitions are.

If you are worried about your child’s development speak to your school and ask the head teacher to make a referral to have your child assessed. This may take some time but does not cost. Ravivworks in Edinburgh offers a multi-sensory approach to overcoming learning difficulties on a one to one basis. The Raviv Method works by creating new neural pathways in the brain through the use of physical and sensory exercises. The programme is focused, effective and fun. Sessions are weekly and each client has a programme tailored to meet their needs. A free initial session is offered to all clients. For more information contact Jane Wexelstein Oliver on 07512311317 jane.wexo@virgin.net or visit www.ravivworks.co.uk

2. Talk to their school teacher – explain your concerns and keep going in until you get the help your child needs. 3. Praise your child, no matter how trivial, your child will grow 10ft tall if they hear you giving them positive praise. 4. Play with them – get outside - bike ride, hill climb, swim, climb a tree, play a game of cards, get them to show you their latest computer game – take an interest in what they do. 5. Have their friends around – DVD night, pizza, popcorn. 6. Set aside 2 minutes every day to do a positive affirmation with your child – get them to repeat 10 times “I am AMAZING” and you finish by saying to your child “You are AMAZING” ( you can use a different word every day, a-z) 7. Sit down with them to help with homework and give them your time and encouragement. 8. Have a laugh with them – instead of shouting about something trivial, laugh about it instead.

With her own independent Opticians in Leith, Clare Downes is passionate about affordable, good eye care for all. Here she shares her professional guidance on how dyslexia and other learning difficulties can be helped significantly with coloured overlays. What is dyslexia? At its simplest level it is a condition that affects the ability to read and spell and 4-5% of the population suffer from this lifelong condition. Males are predominantly affected; from all IQ levels and backgrounds. Indeed many people with dyslexia can have great gifts; geniuses such as Leonardo da Vinci, Einstein and Shakespeare are thought to have been dyslexic. Many people with dyslexia have reduced ability to focus up close and difficulty in co-ordinating their two eyes together. Tests to detect these problems are not done as part of the standard school eye test and dyslexic children must have their sight thoroughly investigated by an experienced optometrist. These visual deficits are rarely the sole cause of reading difficulties, but are often contributory factors. Children find it hard to describe visual problems but the key things to look out for is blurring, doubling, moving, fading, changing colours, shimmering and seeing patterns and shapes within the text. They also may be experiencing headaches due to eyestrain when reading.

Helping Children to Succeed Obstacles to learning? Various interventions available

For some dyslexic children (and adults too) coloured overlays can make a remarkable difference and dramatically improve reading speeds. They make the eyes more comfortable allowing more fluid reading and greater concentration times.

Call Karen 07837930714 www.Kb-Insights.co.uk

Meares Irlen syndrome is the name given to people whose condition is helped by the use of coloured overlays; indeed someone with the condition and using overlays will be able to read 25% faster. With 5% of school children thought to be sufferers, there are many children who could be helped. My own research during my honours degree showed overwhelming results and this is why I now provide a dyslexic and special needs consultation service at my practice. During one of these consultations, an eye examination is undertaken to see if spectacles are required and to eliminate any health concerns. Next the binocular visual system (i.e. how the two eyes work together) is thoroughly examined to identify any visual factors that may contribute to the reading difficulty and exercises may be given to strengthen any weaknesses. Finally a specific reading test determines the best coloured overlay required. The selected overlay is then issued on a trial basis for up to one school term to see if it reduces the symptoms of eye strain and headache. If these prove to be successful, then progressing to tinted prescribed spectacles is the next step. Further testing for this is required as the colour may differ from the overlay to the spectacles. A detailed report accompanies this consultation which can be sent to the client’s teachers, special needs teachers and educational psychologists. Nippers is a children's clothing company based in Bruntsfield. Its owner, Karen Mackay, started the company in 1987, coinciding with the birth of her first child, which was when she realised that there was a gap in the market for designer childrenswear at non designer prices. Initially Karen produced a few designs using fabric found in local shops, working from home on a borrowed machine. These designs sold to friends and then via local craft fairs. Although she no longer has to borrow a sewing machine the original ethos still stands - to design, manufacture and supply designer childrenswear at affordable prices. Fabric is sourced worldwide with special care and attention being paid to durability and design. Nippers has a great selection of childrenswear with collections from; Bob & Blossom, Oh Baby London, No Added Sugar, Green Baby, Bonnie Baby, Starchild, Earth Friendly Baby Toiletries and of course 'Nippers' own label. Blockart

HypnoBirthing

Children’s nursery art business, Blockart (www.blockart.co.uk) was launched last summer by Kirsty Palmer, of Eskbank. Kirsty has experience working in design and management but stopped working when her two small sons arrived. ‘I couldn’t find any non-brand artworks for my son’s rooms which did not cost a fortune so I designed my own starting with safari animals’. She hit on creating "Blockart" for nurseries - sturdy artworks that can be customised for individual clients featuring bespoke designs, names or specific room colours. Each piece is mounted on a beautifully finished block which sits out from the wall, meaning no framing is required. With a studio set up in the garden shed, no design is too big or small for Blockart. Kirsty particularly loves creating the Baby Birth Prints, (art which celebrates the DOB, time, location, and weight of a new baby). ‘The Baby Birth Prints are not just a unique way to celebrate the arrival of a baby, but are also a keepsake which can be treasured for years to come’.

HypnoBirthing is a complete antenatal education programme. Childbirth is a natural, normal and healthy human experience. HypnoBirthing® - The Mongan Method is based on the belief that all babies should come into the world in an atmosphere of gentility, calmness and joy. As an experienced Midwife and qualified HypnoBirthing® instructor, I have a wealth of knowledge on all aspects of Midwifery care. My interest in HypnoBirthing® came after a friend experienced an inspirational birth using HypnoBirthing® techniques. A HypnoBirthing® course gives mothers and their birth companions the tools to create a comfortable birth experience, using deep relaxation techniques that give women the best opportunity to give birth calmly and naturally with minimal discomfort. HypnoBirthing® classes can start from any stage of pregnancy, although the ideal is between 20-30 weeks. However, regardless of how many weeks you are a course can be arranged to suit your time scale and availability. www.edinburghhypnobirthing.co.uk

Edinburgh Baby Massage In my baby massage course I encourage mums to massage their children throughout their childhood. Three years ago I started to practice what I preach and began massaging my own 10 and 12 year olds weekly. It has, without a doubt, been the best thing I have done, as a mother, for my children. Children tend to open up more when they aren’t giving you eye contact. Our weekly, massage nights are precious. My son is now a teenager. I love it when he asks me to come into his room for a massage. Sometimes we chat and sometimes I feel him relaxing and know he is experiencing all the benefits massage brings, like boosting the immune system, digestive system and helping his skin One to one time with your child often gets neglected in the weekly, busy routine of life. For the cost of some training in child massage and a teaspoon of oil, this activity has the potential to enhance your relationship with your child, before those difficult teenage years are upon you. www.edinburghbabymassage.co.uk

MOVING ON UP? Tips on how to successfully sell in the curr Every parent loves to see their children grow and develop. But those of us who have gone on holiday with a small child or young family will know that children don’t travel light and as they grow older the amount of equipment, clothing and other paraphernalia they accumulate along the way can soon begin causing storage problems. At some point your thoughts are likely to turn towards moving up the property ladder, ideally to a home with more bedrooms, a bigger kitchen and a garden for the kids to play in. But in a market where there are more properties for sale than there are buyers, how do you make your property stand out from the rest? The key to a successful marketing campaign is to familiarise yourself with the selling process well in advance of putting your house on the market. Take time to plan ahead and to prepare your property for sale. Find out about the many new marketing initiatives that are available. Here we look at a few of the new practices and initiatives that are available, as well as offering practical advice that can help to speed up the advertising process and lead to a successful sale.

Home Report and repairs Before marketing your property you will need a Home Report. This is made up of:(i) a Single Survey; (ii) an Energy Performance Certificate; and (iii) a Property Questionnaire. The Home Report is instructed by your selling agent and ideally should be dated no more than a couple of weeks before you put your property on the market. Before commissioning a Home Report, attend to those repairs you have been meaning to get round to. Have the roof checked over and replace any slipped or broken slates. Depending on cost, you may also want to consider attending to leaking rhones and downpipes. Replace any grouting around the bath and shower that’s needing attention and replace tiles in the kitchen or bathroom that are cracked or have come away. These are all points that we will be picked up by your surveyor and it is as well to attend to these before the survey is carried out.

Declutter and depersonalise Take the opportunity to declutter. A daunting task at the best of times! Donate any unwanted books, clothing, toys, games and DVDs to your local charity shop. Some charities will uplift unwanted items of furniture and white goods in good condition. Purchasers will ask about storage, so clear out cupboards and built in wardrobes – prospective buyers likely to want to have a peek inside these. Clear kitchen surfaces and remove any personal items, such as photographs and ornaments. Put larger items of furniture into storage, and don’t be tempted to place these items in the garage, attic or garden shed, as most purchasers will want to inspect these areas as well.

Define your living space Remember when you are selling your house you are also selling a lifestyle. Give some thought to who is going to want to buy your property and what their needs are likely to be. Wherever possible you should aim to achieve a clearly defined layout of all rooms in your home. Think about reinstating the dining room and restoring the spare room you are currently using as a study or playroom to a bedroom. Create as much space as possible. You want a purchaser to be able to visualise himself living in your property.

Décor and Decorating Bear in mind that bright colours are not to everyone’s tastes. If you are thinking of redecorating, consider using neutral tones. These help to create light and space. Attend to chipped woodwork and repair wooden floors. Accentuate any period features, such as cornicing and fireplaces. Clean, dust and polish. Your house should shine, admittedly not the easiest thing to achieve with young children about. Clean the windows inside and out. Replace worn rugs and freshen up bed linen. Add some colour co-ordinated cushions and throws and fresh towels in the bathroom.

12 FAMILIES EDINBURGH ISSUE 66

External Remember, first impressions count! Paint the front door and tidy the garden. Neatly mown lawns, trimmed hedges and well tended borders all add to the appeal of a property. You might want to consider employing a gardener to carry out maintenance work and repair or repaint garden fences in need of attention. In the spring and summer months power wash patio areas and invest in some good quality garden furniture, to create a comfortable and appealing outdoor living space. Invest in plant pots and colourful tubs to add a splash of colour. These are relatively inexpensive and can be taken with you when you move. If all this sounds too exhausting to consider taking on yourself, at Morton Fraser we have contacts with a number of specialists who can help, whether you are looking for advice on how to style a particular room or need a gardener or handyman to deal with any odd jobs that need doing.

Viewing If possible avoid cooking immediately before viewing times to avoid food odours. If you have pets ask a friend to look after these at viewing times. Similarly, remove food bowls and litter trays. Most people opt for open viewing and, since this is likely to be for a minimum of two hours, consider making arrangements for the children to go to friends or family whilst viewing is taking place. With the best will in the world, two hours is very long time to expect children to keep themselves amused. A bored child will distract both you and prospective purchasers from concentrating on the house. Offer to show viewers round and then give them time to look round the property themselves. If you are going on holiday or feel you would rather someone else handle your viewings, we can arrange this on your behalf using one of our team of experienced viewing agents.

Marketing Initiatives Our estate agency department will agree with you a marketing campaign to suit your budget. It is always worthwhile investing in good quality sale particulars -- even in this technological age, you would be surprised how many purchasers still ask to see a set of sale particulars. The traditional For Sale board is also a must. Then, of course, there is the internet, which is by far the most effective way to market your property. At Morton Fraser our easy to use website enables prospective purchasers to access and download details of your property. As members of Edinburgh Solicitors Property Centre (ESPC) we are able to market your property on espc.com. We also offer new initiatives such as mobile sites, iPhone apps and QR (Quick response) codes that allow interested parties to access details of your property from their iPhone as well as “movie” shoots that provide a professional video of your property.

rent property market Pricing Offers over (O/O), offers around (O/A), offers in the region of (OIRO) and fixed price (FP) – what do they all mean? Our expert team of sale negotiators will ensure you pitch your property at just the right price. Our team will stay in regular contact, keep you advised of notes of interest and follow up with parties that have viewed your property to gain as much feedback as possible.

Clinching the deal We will negotiate the best deal for you. Don’t necessarily take the first offer you receive, but also be realistic on price. Remember, if you can negotiate a good price with a date of entry to suit, this will allow you to take advantage of market conditions. So with your sale “in the bag” you can turn your attention to finding your new home. We appreciate that buying a property will probably represent the biggest investment you are likely to make. Our estate agency and legal team will work closely with you to ensure the selling and purchasing processes are as seamless (and stress free!) as possible. There is a huge tree house with a restaurant and beautiful gardens where children can run around and play in the water features. down to earth with a bump The Diary of a First-Time Dad by Andrew Watson is published on May 25th. As the husband of a family doctor, Andrew always thought having a baby would be problem-free – like helping a kitchen installer install a kitchen. Unfortunately, as he and his wife soon discovered, babies don’t always read the textbooks. The book aims to be entertaining, reassuring and also, as much of it involves his GP wife, informative. Andrew is a native Scot with an urge to escape London and return to Scotland. Since writing the book Andrew and his wife are about to take the plunge. Here he shares a bit of that journey with us.

The Piccadilly Line Polly, four, is pole dancing in the middle of the carriage, cheerfully knocking against our fellow travellers already put out by the cases intruding on the doors. Tom, one, is screaming from the buggy. Zoë buys a minute’s silence with a breadstick. ‘Don’t worry,’ she says, as I glance at my watch. ‘We’ve plenty of time.’ I nod as though afraid of missing the train rather than calculating how much more of the journey we have to survive. It’s five hours from London to my mum in Haddington. We’ve four days to find a job for Zoë, a school for Polly and a home for us all. Because in eight weeks we’ll have thrown away all three to start a new life in East Lothian.

The East Coast line Tom finally settles somewhere north of Newcastle. I watch Zoë reading to Polly and wonder why she’s agreed to such a drastic change. I’m Scottish, with friends and family around Edinburgh. After ten years in London, I’m aching to move. But for Zoë, a Londoner born and bred, she’s moving beyond the daily orbit of her ever-helpful mum and leaving behind a well-paid job and a fantastic sphere of friends. Partly, she’s admitted, it’s for my sake. But it’s also about ‘quality of life’: space to breathe, a calmer pace, a sense of community. But more space can mean isolation and hours in the car, a slower pace can result in less income, community can invade on privacy. And until she’s experienced that life elsewhere, both good and bad, ‘quality of life’ seems a nebulous concept. Might she arrive in Scotland and realise she’d willingly live with a little less ‘quality’ in exchange for all London can offer? Zoë and Polly are now staring out the window, entranced by the cliff-top views. They’re clearly happy tourists, but will they ever be happy locals?

House hunting Zoë walks out of the fourth property on our list and bursts into tears. Is she realising she’s made a terrible mistake in agreeing to move? ‘Oh God,’ she sobs. ‘I love this house.’ I bundle her quickly into the car lest the owners spot her reaction and add £10,000 onto the price for each tear. This is serious. For Zoë, houses have never been more than bricks and mortar. ‘It’s the people inside that make it a home,’ she’s always said. Yet here she is, shaking in her seat. But the house is 150m from the train line. What to Zoë is a relatively everyday set-up is, to me, a deal breaker. Why move from the city if the city’s regularly chugging past every fifteen minutes? ‘But we could keep chickens!’ she pleads. ‘Polly would love it.’ Fortunately, Zoë finally realizes there’s no space in the house for more than six around a table, and we agree it’s a compromise too far for us both.

Returning to London Zoë’s been typically efficient with our weekend away, re-establishing old friendships and making new ones, registering Polly for a local primary school and, most impressively, interviewing for three jobs and bagging every one. And while we may not yet have found a home, something more important has happened. ‘This trip has confirmed one thing,’ she says. ‘Everyone’s been so friendly. I feel accepted on my own merits, not just as the wife of a Scot. I’m no longer moving for your sake. I want it too now, more than ever.’ So just as it’s the people inside that make a house a home, the same could be said for a country. And fortunately that’s something about which Zoë needs no convincing; Scotland has sold itself.

When choosing your seeds, go for those with ‘giant’ in their name as many varieties don’t grow very tall. Fill a large pot with compost and sow three seeds evenly spaced, pushing them in a couple of centimetres and covering with compost (or do the same directly into soil). Water regularly and you should see the seedlings within a week or two. When they have two good size leaves, choose the biggest plant and take out the other two. Then just keep watered and tie in to a bamboo pole as they grow. To get the tallest plants, pinch out the side shoots as they appear. For something different, why not try Suttons’ ‘Ruby Sunset’, as the name suggests, a striking red version, or Unwins’ ‘Teddy Bear ‘ has big fluffy flowers on smaller plants, perfect for the patio. After they have finished flowering, leave your sunflowers in situ in the garden... they are a welcome larder for bees and birds into the autumn.

Peas

Outdoor cucumber

Peas are attractive, easy to grow plants (they have pretty white flowers) and are fun for children to harvest, often eating them straight from the pod. For best results, grow in a sunny and sheltered position and protect seedlings from squirrels and birds – a few twigs over the row or water bottles, with their bases cut off, make perfect cloches.

Fast growing and producing such useful food for the kitchen, outdoor (or ridge) cucumbers are fun and easy for children to grow. They are 90% water content, and so require generous watering to thrive, but good quality soil, or a big pot, and some support such as trellis or cane, is all they ask.

Prepare a flat bottomed drill 15cm wide and water it well. Sow about 10 seeds per 30cm, spacing them evenly in a zigzag. Cover with 2cm of soil and firm it down. If you’re growing more than one row, allow about 60cm between them. Seedlings should emerge in a week or two after sowing. The pea plants will need support as they grow – they are climbers – so erect a frame of netting, or use pea sticks (just twiggy branches). Keep them watered and you should be eating peas in three to four months after sowing! Pea ‘Onward’ is widely available, a strong grower with reliable cropping, and has the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.

Cosmos Very floriferous, with pretty daisy shaped delicate flowers and feathery foliage, Cosmos is easy to grow and rewards with a reliable and abundant display throughout midsummer to the first frosts. It comes in a wide colour palette, from softest pinks through vivacious reds to deep chocolates, but my personal favourite is the pure white. Try Unwins Cosmos ‘Cosmonaut’ for white or Suttons ‘Gazebo mix’ for a variety of colour hues from red, pink and white in the same planting. Although a half-hardy annual, Cosmos is easy to grow if you wait until mid May and sow directly outside into pots or the ground. Germination is fast, usually within 10 days. Then as long as you keep thinning out the seedlings (picking out some to leave others space to grow) and water well, within 10 weeks you should have a lovely display. Deadhead regularly (snip off faded flowers) to encourage more flowering. The simple, generous flowers are loved by children.

16 FAMILIES EDINBURGH ISSUE 66

Popular varieties include the humorously named ‘Burpless Tasty Green’ (which claims to prevent the obvious side effect often associated with eating them!) and ‘Marketmore’. Marshalls and Suttons both stock them. Sow them 1cm deep where they are to grow, covering them back over with soil or compost. They should germinate within 10 days. Thin out the seedlings by snipping them off, not pulling out, so as not to disturb the delicate roots of the seedlings you are keeping, and ensure if you are growing several plants that they are approx 90cm apart. Keep watering and feeding and 20cm long cucumbers should be ready for harvest 1214 weeks after sowing. Whatever you choose to grow with your children, it can be a most rewarding, productive and fun past-time. For children to sow a seed, see the plant emerge, tend it as it grows, and then a few weeks later be eating the result, is just wonderful! www.suttons.co.uk www.unwins.co.uk www.marshalls-seeds.co.uk

Family Picnics As spring moves in to summer our thoughts turn naturally to the joy of family picnics. Here are some ideas on where to go and what to eat. Picnics should be fun for all the family. That means trying to come up with food that makes the children smile but is also healthy so that mum and dad feel good too! Children like food that is easy to eat and that does not require too much effort in the way of biting and chewing so cut raw vegetables up into sticks and then wrap them in damp kitchen paper to keep them moist and fresh. Keep your salads crisp by carrying the dressing in a separate container to be added to the salad just before eating. Make fruit fun to eat by cutting it into bite size pieces and putting on a skewer. Keep your whole picnic cool and fresh by freezing your drinks and packing it all together in a cool bag. By lunch time the drinks will have defrosted having done their job of keeping the food cool. Now your picnic is packed, where should you go? Here are some ideas of places in and around Edinburgh that might be just the ticket! Scotland Yard Park: Quiet, leafy, residential park in New Town area and near Broughton. Situated at the foot of Scotland Street, off Eyre Place, and joined to King George V Park (the two parks are essentially one). Two swing parks for children, one with a large slide, and a good basketball court. Scotland Yard was originally a station, and train goods yard. The Rodney Street tunnel, heading North to Leith, officially re-opened in July 2009, extending the off-road pedestrian-cycleway network along the former railway line. Leith shore is but a 10 minute cycle ride away. A great place to stop off on a walk or cycle.

the other hand – Inverleith Park is literally across the road (Arboretum Place), with a decent play park, beautiful views of the city centre and plenty of room for your picnic blanket! Try making fruit bread fingers with the kids and munching as you go. Or try zingy lemon and ginger rolls from Raw Health, before visiting the hothouses, rockery and Chinese garden in the Botanics. Ironically, with picnics in mind, a good time to go is just after a shower as many of the plants are at their most fragrant. If you like your Rhododendrons go in the early spring or late summer depending on the variety.

Blackford Hill: One of Edinburgh’s ‘Seven Hills’, and situated a few miles south of the city centre. At the top you’ll find Edinburgh’s Royal Observatory, which moved here from Calton Hill in 1896 when light pollution from the city became too much. Ideal for a sunny afternoon, try making wraps for a tasty snack. Once you’ve had your picnic, you might want to take a wander down to Blackford Pond, where you’ll find a wide variety of pond and bird life including moorhens, Canada geese, swans, mallards and herons. Look out for travelling frogs early in the year and hoards of frogs and toads spawn. If you’re taking a dog, remember to keep it on a leash near the pond, as we all know what most dogs like to do when presented with a pond!

The Meadows: Is a popular haunt with pretty much everybody. Not JUST because it's round the corner from our Tollcross store (although that's handy for cold drinks), but because it's home to one of the best play parks ever! From swings with comfy chairs attached, to water pumps, to climbing walls, not forgetting the flying fox or tricycle roundabout! If you've kids, grab a picnic table, spread out your stuff and settle in for the day! Try making a superfood pasta, perfect for boosting energy on a long day. If you've smaller kids, try the play park on Bruntsfield Links, a perfect spot to watch folk on the putting green! If you don't like play parks, there's always the tennis courts or Frisbee. Simply sit back sip on some fresh fruit juice and watch the cricket game...

Royal Botanic Gardens: It would be one of out top picnicking spots as the Botanics are simply amazing, but there's NO PICNICKING in the grounds. Oh they'll turn a blind eye to the odd 2 year old grabbing a snack, but there's no lazing away the afternoon with a sarnie here! On

You can find recipes for fruit bread fingers and superfood pasta on the Real Foods website along with more suggestions of places to picnic and more ideas on what to make for a healthy picnic (in our News Articles section). www.realfoods.co.uk

reduce your families 5 ways tocarbon footprint Alistair Pugh from the Edinburgh Steiner School believes that reducing your family’s carbon footprint should be anything but a chore! He lists his top five ways to save money and help the environment while enjoying some fun family time. Start a Vegetable Plot

Start a competition

Gardening is a fantastic activity for all ages to enjoy together plus the crops you grow will be fresh, taste better and boast more vitamins. Your children will enjoy the wonderful achievement of eating the food they have nurtured and raised from seeds and are less likely to waste it. Growing your own veg will also cut your household’s food miles. So don a pair of wellies and get stuck in! If you don’t have outside space, a community garden project can be a fantastic way for your family to immerse themselves in Botany, learn more about where their food comes from, spend time outdoors and enjoy some exercise! Visit: http://royaledinburghcommunitygardens.wordpress.com for more information.

To help your family save energy in the home, create a mini competition with a reward chart to see who can save the most! Incentives like trips out or new toys can be great motivators to ensure lights are switched off when children leave their rooms or the TV is switched off at the wall rather than being left on standby. For more easy tips to save energy around the house, visit www.nef.org.uk.

On Your Bikes

The Edinburgh Steiner School has pledged to reduce its carbon emissions by more than 378 tonnes over the next ten years. The school, which welcomes pupils of all abilities from age 3 – 18 years, is helping to match its own reductions in the homes and daily lives of its pupils, teachers and the local community through a series of pupil workshops, events and curriculum linked activities.

Whether it’s cycling to school or enjoying a day out with the family, ditch the car and take in a different view of the city. If travelling to school by bike is not possible for your family, try a cycle route this weekend. The Water of Leith walkway is the perfect place to hone your skills with plenty of wildlife and areas of interest along the route including The Saughton Winter Gardens, the Scottish Gallery of Modern Art and the Botanics. The route is suitable for cycling or walking and you can join and leave at lots of places along its routes. The Water of Leith Visitor Centre welcomes young families and organises regular events for children. Visit http://www.waterofleith.org.uk for a list of their upcoming special events.

Plant a Tree Not only are they easy to care for and beautiful to look at but one broad leaf tree can absorb around 1 tonne of carbon dioxide during its lifetime. Choose and plant your tree together to mark a special event or perhaps the passing of a loved one. If you can’t plant a tree yourself, help with the reforestation of Scotland’s Highland glens by visiting www.treesforlife.org.uk. Your family’s tree will be protected for its lifetime, so that it grows to maturity in the forest, creating a vital habitat for wildlife.

Eat Local Buying from local suppliers and growers will reduce your food miles considerably and eliminates the costs and environmental impact of transport, processing, packaging and advertising. Next time you are in the supermarket, challenge your children to find out where different foods have travelled from so you can try and select the one with the least food miles. Supporting local shops and growers is important but so is reducing waste. 8.3 million tonnes of food is thrown away by households in the UK every year which costs the average family £680! If we reduced this, the CO2 saving would be the equivalent of taking 1 in 4 cars off the road. www.lovefoodhatewaste.com has lots of recipe ideas for leftovers as well as tips to help cut your wastage. Why not challenge your children to come up with their own recipe ideas to use up what’s left in the fridge.

Summer Camps and Activities

www.monkeymusic.co.uk

The first email asking me to provide details of activities for children over the school summer holidays arrived in my inbox in February this year. I’ve always known there are lots of very organised parents in Edinburgh, in fact I’ve always considered myself a strong contender in that category, but I have to swallow my pride and put my hands up to the fact that I have been well and truly outclassed by February mum. After an April that seemed to include a LOT of time with no school now seems to be the ideal moment to find a comfy seat, read the next 7 pages and choose some fantastic activities for your children to do over the summer break. Just make sure you get your child’s place booked before someone else gets in there first! Monkey at the Fringe! Back for the 3rd year, award winning Monkey Music will be running 2 age specific fun filled workshops for babies and children at the Pleasance Kidzone situated in the Pleasance Courtyard. The shows will be 10.30am for 6 months – 2 years and 11.30 for 2-5 year olds. Each show will last 45 minutes and will be full of songs, games and fun with percussion instruments. Come and join in the fun with Monkey. Tickets available from the Pleasance / Fringe Box Office and limited tickets will be available on the door. Monkey will also be launching a range of new classes and venues in September so check out the newly designed website for class details. Free taster sessions available to all. www.monkeymusic.co.uk

Kb-Insights summer programme Want to improve your child’s performance- academically and physically? Make this summer break count - take advantage of the opportunity for your child to participate in fun active sessions which will integrate left and right brain. We have 2 feet, 2 hands, 2 ears, 2 eyes and even 2 brains: left and right. When it comes to function we are decidedly one sided, the most obvious of course is handedness. Where there is mixed laterality it can cause difficulties: dyslexic tendencies, auditory processing difficulties or behavioural difficulties. This summer take advantage of the opportunity for your child to participate in fun active sessions which will help integrate and sharpen processing. Academic and cognitive learning is based on successful motor learning experiences. If your child finds aspects of learning challenging or has fluctuating concentration, give them a break from the books and get them active. For others who are involved in competitive sports, and wish to enhance their performance, it can refine their movements and coordination. A 6 wk programme based on 2 sessions a week. Individual sessions available which can be tailored to your child or various group sessions 5 – 16 Full details at www.kb-insight.co.uk call Karen 07837930714

Many parents worry about the effect of holidays on the education of their children. Summer tutoring at Kip McGrath could make all the difference. Kip McGrath Education Centres provide professional tuition by fully qualified teachers, all of whom have a wealth of experience teaching in local schools. The high quality Kip McGrath programme focuses on maths, English, reading, spelling and comprehension. Each 80 minute tutoring session involves the completion of 6 different multi sensory activities some of which involve the use of the computer. Jo Jingles Jo Jingles is 15 this year and to celebrate big Jo will be out and about all over Scotland. After his sell out shows in previous years he is returning to the Edinburgh Fringe in August where he will be blasting into outer space, get your tickets early! As a 15th birthday treat, Jo Jingles in the Lothians will also continue to offer free classes for babies from 3 to 6 months. Joanne Goodall, franchisee for West Edinburgh explains "we recognise that babies under 6 months may not be in a routine yet and may miss classes due to baby needing fed or falling asleep. We also recognise the financial pressures that new parents are under and hope that free baby classes will enable everyone to get the musical start for their baby which research has shown is so important. We believe our 45 minute classes offer great value for money, there is no joining fee and we offer sibling discounts. But more importantly children have fun at classes while enjoying spending one-to-one time with mum, dad, granny or nanny". For more details on classes or the fringe contact Joanne (West Edinburgh & West Lothian) on 0131 443 4196, Susan (East Edinburgh and Midlothian) on 0131 620 3282 or Leigh (East Lothian and Borders) on 01875 616607.
