EDUCATION

Some news from our local schools and nurseries Little People nursery remains open and serving hot food Little People Montessori Nursery is proud to be one of the few nurseries in Hammersmith & Fulham that have remained open during the coronavirus Head Chef Francesco Mosele outbreak to serve London’s community of key workers—doctors and nurses at six local hospitals, GPs, teachers, and other essential workers. To help keyworker parents they also provide them with a free meal service with different menu options ranging from roast dinners, lasagne to vegetable curries—which they collect each evening when they pick up their children. This has proven very popular as chef Francesco Mosele stays until the end of each day to hand over the meals personally—ready to re-heat when parents get home. Jane Gleasure (nursery proprietor) commented: “This initiative has been very successful. Offering a free meal service to parents each day is our way of showing how much we appreciate what our keyworkers are doing to keep London safe and healthy—we want them to know we are all in this together”. www.littlepeople.co.uk

The Oak Montessori Just over 6 months ago two local mothers, one a former Deputy Head of Prep School and one a Montessori Directress, opened the doors to their own nursery to 30 families. They transformed one half of Wimbledon Park’s bowling pavilion into a Montessori nursery school in the heart of Wimbledon Park. They realised that half of the Pavilion was disused and in a very sad state, so set about transforming it with IDverde, who run the park on behalf of Merton Council. The Oak Montessori was born! “We now find ourselves doing Circle Time online with 28 children every morning at 9am rather than in our lovely nursery! But the educational learning programme continues and we are still feeling connected to each other, whether adults or little ones, so all in all it has been a positive story so far!” They are close to full next academic year but still have some afternoon places and a few full days available. info@theoakmontessori.com I 07979 684000 www.theoakmontessori.com 6 June 2020

Parkgate House School Parkgate’s online learning programme retains the school’s broad curriculum, including all specialist lessons, and continues to excite, entertain and educate their children. “Distance learning has strengthened our school community and allowed for the creation of some truly unique and inspirational teaching.” 80 Clapham Common North Side, London SW4 9SD www.parkgate-school.co.uk

Two brand new SwimWay venues in East Sheen!

Hot News

SwimWay is delighted to announce the opening of two brand new East Sheen venues later this year!

The first is the newly refurbished 16-metre Sheen Mount School indoor pool (SW17 7RT) opening in September. Perfect for children aged 3 months to 12 years. SwimWay has been teaching at the Sheen Mount pool for a number of years now. The second is the newly built 20-metre Home Guard Club indoor pool (SW14 8 LA) opening towards the end of the year. This larger venue will be open to all ages and abilities from babies entering the water for the first time, through to adult learners. Due to the necessary social distancing restrictions in place, bookings will be restricted in numbers until further notice. So, availability is likely to be extremely limited. Register your interest emai info@swimway.co.uk

Mindfulness to help parents and children beat anxiety Most of us find the current change and uncertainty hard to sit with. So, now more than ever parents and children alike need coping strategies, to make sure they can manage negative thoughts. Fear, frustration, sadness—to name but a few— can dominate our attention if we lack the skills to stay in the present moment, where for most of us, everything is actually OK. To help children, teens and adults develop ways of dealing with difficulty, Anna Wille is offering 6-10 week live online Mindfulness courses as well as weekly drop-in meditation sessions, from as little as £7/week and FREE for NHS families. Email: breathe@annawille.com

Little Voices after-school clubs thrive online Little Voices is living and breathing positivity—as a provider and educator of LAMDA, singing and drama tuition for children aged 4 - 18 years. They have made it their duty to make sure their pupils and parents have peace of mind that their after-school classes are able to continue, and the children can still work towards their LAMDA exams (be it at a slightly later date)—spreading love, care, fun and learning at such unprecedented times. Little Voices work closely with schools including St Pauls Barnes, St James’s Prep, Old Vicarage, Dolphin School, The Roche, Oasis Putney and others providing more than 300 children across South West London with afterschool drama and singing lessons of distinction, preparing children for yearly LAMDA exam awards. Sadly not all other after-school clubs have been able to continue and run online but Little Voices have managed to accomplish a great deal by moving their lessons and large number of classes online with great support from the parents and head teachers at the schools they work with. swl@littlevoices.org.uk www.littlevoices.org.uk

LEARNING

Lockdown learnings from Parsons Green Prep Tim Cannell is a retired headmaster, ISI inspector and a member of Parsons Green Prep’s advisory board. The pace of change has been dramatic for schools, with many teachers having to upskill overnight in order to continue to offer our children the education and support they deserve. How can teachers guide, support and teach their pupils remotely while ensuring that their pupils are both safe and supported emotionally? The independent sector schools have in many cases been able to teach a full or partial curriculum face-to-face online. Teachers have had to take on new ways of planning, adjusting to a lack of resources that may be at home, interacting with pupils, as well as offering the vital socialisation of the pupils in their class that is a key part of life in school – a main reason why remote learning will not replace children from physically attending school. There are further unseen consequences to come. Children returning to school in a time when social distancing is in place may find it confusing, not least for the youngest pupils. It is not returning to what they knew before but a third way of learning within a few months. This is just one of the current challenges for schools and teachers. School leaders have had to be proactive, adapt and plan for a new way of learning. Amongst all the practical issues to oversee, the three key areas that I believe are crucial for leaders of schools to have in place and monitor are: safeguarding, promoting wellbeing and monitoring of pupil outcomes. Safeguarding children There are many vulnerable children that schools care for and it is imperative that schools work with the local authorities to ensure clear policies are in place and enacted upon. Promoting pupil wellbeing Wellbeing results from a complex range of approaches from physical exercise, offering opportunities for pupils to discuss their feelings as well as exploring yoga, meditation and more,

allowing children to have time to be quiet and just to be. Monitoring both the teaching and the learning Leaders need to be able to support their staff as they learn new skills, allow time to share ideas and to use technology effectively and in an exciting way. Likewise, do they know how well pupils are learning? Is the teaching supporting children with SEND and challenging the higher ability pupils equally? As some children start to return in June, others not until September, do they know where each child is on their learning journey? All is not doom and gloom and many of the skills that are often referred to as the soft skills are coming to the fore, such as resilience and perseverance as well as Carol Dweck’s idea of developing a growth mindset that allows for us to get things wrong and to strive for improvement. Likewise, for the best schools as we move forward, teachers will embrace technology more and have a greater understanding of how it may be used to enhance and enrich the learning of all our pupils in the future. Hello! CALLING ALL

Download the family app that invests in your kids

TECH SAVVY PARENTS

We’d like to tell you about Beanstalk, the brand new family app brought to you by the people behind KidStart. The only app of its kind, Beanstalk helps families come together to build a meaningful nest egg for their children’s future. They are on the look for tech savvy parents to give the app a whirl and change the way they save for their kids. From talking to parents, Beanstalk’s founders could see that the savings market for kids was broken. Almost every new parent wants to put something aside for their children to help launch them into adult life, but very few do, often because the existing products are confusing or poor value.

It’s simple – you can add all your children and yourself on to one app.

Even when parents do something, they often just keep it in cash. This may not be the right choice for longer term saving as the value can be eroded by inflation.

You don’t need to put any money in to open an account and start saving:

That’s why Beanstalk was born – the revolutionary new way for families to make a real difference for their children and themselves.

Why choose Beanstalk?

All the family can help – grandparents, friends and the wider family can all contribute easily to your kids’ pots.

1. Use KidStart to earn free savings 2. Round up your purchases to save little and often 3. Top up or set up regular contributions if you would like. It’s designed for growth - at 0.5% the fee is one of the lowest, meaning more saved for your kids.

Click here to download the family app that invests in your kids. Follow the Beanstalk journey: @thebeanstalkapp on IG, FB and Twitter. Please note: capital as risk. As with any investment, the value can go down as well as up. 9 June 2020 23

PARENTING

Dealing with Fighting Children By Tanith Carey Sibling rivalry and rows can be one of the most energysapping, nerve-jangling aspects of parenting. Now, still in partial lockdown, I’m pretty sure you desperately need a rest from constant cries of: “Mum, he hit me!” or “She’s taken my toy!” Stressful as it can be, it helps to remember that ALL siblings fight sometimes - it can even be a positive part of your children’s development which offers a safe training ground to learn how to deal with conflict. Sibling conflict is a natural part of family life which can never be avoided completely because it stems back to each child’s primitive need to survive by not missing out on their parents’ care and protection. Squabbles and explosions flare up because children are still developing control over the part of the brain that helps them manage their impulses. In the teen years, rows can escalate further when siblings start to directly compare achievements and to define themselves in opposition to each other. But looking at it from the point of view of children, understanding 24 June 2020

what kids are REALLY fighting over and taking into account their development really helps. If you introduce evidence-based parenting strategies, which are based on science, not opinion, I guarantee your kids will get on better – even if not ALL of the time. HERE ARE MY 12 DETAILED TIPS. FAMILY HEALTH

Why families should support the legal case against 5G There’s no credible evidence to suggest that 5G is responsible for COVID-19. However, there are long-standing concerns that wifi and electromagnetic radiation (EMR) have major impacts on humans, which are not yet fully understood. So here is a something that should interest every family in the UK. One of the most venerated barristers of our time, Michael Mansfield QC, is leading the legal team challenging the UK Government over its failure to take notice of the health risks and public concern related to 5G. Michael Mansfield has led legal teams in high profile cases of civil liberty and miscarriages of justice. He has represented the families of Grenfell Tower, Lockerbie, the Ballymurphy Massacre and Stephen Lawrence. https://actionagainst5g.org/legal-case If 5G is genuinely safe, why are there 253,665 signatures from scientists, doctors and engineers on the 5G Space Appeal? Why have 248 scientists issued an urgent appeal to the UN to stop it? Why are thousands of peer-reviewed studies in medical literature, showing harmful bio-effects from wireless radiation, not being taken into account? What are the concerns? •

5G is not a tried and tested technology. Not a single peer-reviewed scientific study has been carried out on the health risks associated with 5G technologies. See here.

However there have been 1,670 peerreviewed Scientific Papers identifying health risks, see here.

There is a worldwide movement raising concerns over 5G technology.

5G antennas will be placed every 100 meters on lamposts, beaming at you day and night and into your homes and bedrooms: unlike wifi in the home, you won’t be able to turn it off!

They are cutting down trees as 5G cannot emit if trees block the way. This at a time when we need trees more than ever because of global warming.

Ask yourselves: In this day and age can I really trust the big telecoms industry? Can I really trust this huge industry to use only fair and ethical methods, with so much investment at stake in the rush to roll out 5G? Particular concerns for families My daughter’s school in London is located in close proximity to a mobile phone mast. I feel we all need to dig deeper into this matter and start raising awareness about the fact that the safety standards that the telecommunications industry use are completely outdated, and thus we the public are at risk. Laura Lauberte We urgently refer parents to the first page of the website wifiinschools.org.uk. Wi-Fi alters brain activity in young adults. It is looking into the benefits of Wi-Fi as a learning tool in schools, when at the same time Wi-Fi could be damaging the cognitive abilities and brain development of pupils. Read here. Do also watch this video 5G, 4G and 3G - Understanding the health risks, particularly for children here. Families South West has reported on the issue of WiFi and EMR for many years now; unfortunately, the more we look, the more we are concerned. We urge you to at the very least look into the matter. Don’t feel scared by the topic. On the contrary, do feel empowered that you have a say: it is our duty as parents. The first thing you can do is investigate the matter. Then if you can do support the legal challenge, you can here.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

Time to ask yourselves some meaningful questions? The lockdown measures introduced in March earlier this year are some of the most draconian the UK has ever faced and have resulted in a huge shift in how people behave. At first there was obvious panic, fear and confusion as people tried to make sense of what was happening. Then, a month or so in, as we settled into the ‘new normal’, many of us realised that there were actually some positives to the situation. Notably, more quality time with loved ones, no commute, less rushing around and general ‘busyness’, more sleep, better eating habits etc. Now that the government is starting to ease off on the restrictions a little, there’s a shift as individuals, families, organisations and the country as a whole start to reflect on what we’ve learnt from this experience and what we’ll do differently moving forwards. On a personal level we now have a brilliant opportunity to do a kind of ‘lessons learnt’ exercise looking at all areas of our life asking: •

What positives have come from this situation?

What negatives have come from this situation?

What do you miss from pre-lockdown and value now more than ever?

What have you been grateful for during lockdown, something that perhaps you now value more than ever?

What new habits or ways of living/ being would you would like to carry forwards?

What habits or ways of living/ being from prelockdown do you not want to go back to?

Question your work balance? Many people are questioning whether or not they need or want to be in the office 5 days a week now and of course businesses are questioning this too. Question your children’s schedule of activities? Some parents are also questioning whether or not they need to engage their children in so many extracurricular activities recognising that perhaps

their children are just as happy and engaged with the simpler things in life. They’re also looking at this from the perspective of how much time they spent on the weekends and in the evenings ferrying children around and also the expense of it all. Question your social life? Perhaps you realise that your social diary was far too busy and the pressure to keep up with friends and family was actually pretty exhausting and you now relish your relaxed Saturday mornings where there’s nothing to pressing to do. Question your wellbeing? From a health and wellbeing perspective many people have been far more active and want to keep that up, or in contrast people have calmed down and stopped being so busy and they realise they almost didn’t know what it was like to slow down and just be. And I’m sure there are many people who didn’t even know they were chronically tired until they started getting more sleep! So, with all of that in mind, I encourage you to take some time to ask yourself these questions for every area of your life. There is so much to learn and gain by reflecting on this time to then shape your life for the better moving forwards. Kate Horwood is a leading lifestyle consultant and wellbeing coach, who helps her clients thrive during the good times and periods of adversity, crisis and change. RE-WILDING

The ladies who dig our streets 4. Or make contact with Justine or similar organisations and get involved with a local group.

Will you be part of the re-wilding revolution? Pick the right group for you: Sharing Seeds

@sharingseeds is a Transition Town Tooting project, funded by the Wandsworth Grant Fund. They aim to attract people of ages to plant around the tree bases of the fantastic trees of Tooting, using creative activities. During Lockdown communities still share their seed planting experiences via social media.

Tooting Healthy Streets Justine McNeil is a mum of three and a photographer. She started planting the base of trees in her street in her spare time. Slowly neighbours joined in and now her street is looking more beautiful than ever. She has now got a group name (Balham Street Gardeners), an Instagram page (@ balham_street_gardeners) and a little team to help her. Justine and her enthusiastic community of gardeners told Families: “The idea behind the project is to encourage the local community to work together to transform our streets into mini gardens. The tree pits are often used for fly tipping or dog poos but could be turned into mini meadows or wildlife havens to encourage pollinators. It doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive to do and it strengthens the sense of community. It’s also beautiful to look at!”

Our streets need YOU! 1.

Go and admire beautified streets, Hillier Road in Balham is great—take the kids!

2. Find a tree base on your doorstep. 3. Go on the Sharing seeds website and follow the instructions.
