DANCING FOR CHARITY This October the pupils of the Vacani School of Dance (Clapham) will be dancing in a Charity Performance of Cinderella at the Rhoda McGaw Theatre, Woking. The much awaited charity performance will be raising funds for two charities: the Neo Natal Intensive Care Unit at Ashford and St Peters, who do so much to care for poorly babies and their families, and Cinderella Dance Scholarships. Angelina Spurrier, the school principal: “Most of the choreography for our Show has been learnt during our normal class times at the Broomwood Methodist Church Hall.

We have 110 children in each of the four performances, 110 costumes to make/acquire/borrow and the show will include 26 choreographies—our pupils will also get the opportunity to perform their dances at Christmas.

We hope children will appreciate and value the experience of raising funds and dancing for worthy causes.”

NEW POSTNATAL YOGA COURSE A new postnatal yoga and baby massage course has just opened in central Wimbledon. FISHPONDS PLAYING FIELDS OPENS The Fishponds playing fields on Hebdon Road in Tooting is finally open to the public after a long 6 year campaign led by the then MP for Tooting, Sadiq Khan along with local residents. ‘It has taken the Council a long time but we are delighted that what used to be a locked door will now be open for all local people to use,’ said Annamarie Critchard, a Labour councillor for Tooting.

However the Council has only agreed to open the playing fields on a trial basis until October 28, so please visit them in this time and send your all-important feedback to the Council by emailing parks@wandsworth.gov.uk. The 10 acre field has a cricket pitch, full size football pitch, a smaller football pitch and a running track, as well as open space.

ITALIAN CLASSES Club Italiano run a small Italian class after-school, once a week. The activities are planned to suit the age group and abilities of the children. First they concentrate on “speaking “ Italian using different topics each week (holiday, birthday party, phone call etc) with action songs and acting out. Then they sit down with a simple worksheet to complete and to take home for revision. Basic reading, writing and grammar is covered according to age. The cost is only £373 for the whole year.

SANDS END COMMUNITY CENTRE TO RETURN The much-missed Sands End Community Centre is set to return to Fulham, as Hammersmith and Fulham Council works with local residents to relaunch the centre in the run-down Clancarty Lodge site in South Park. The closure of the old community centre in Broughton was a real loss to the area, with the disappearance of a local library, community gym, crèche and drop-in centre, so it is great news that plans for the new one are progressing well. Tideway, the company building the Thames Tideway Tunnel has agreed to provide £2 million to construct the new centre, which will be run by local residents. There will also be new play facilities, as well as upgrades and improvements to South Park itself. Great news!

TACKLING FUEL POVERTY A new charity has found an effective way to tackle the cruelties of poverty that many London families are facing. Fuelbanks and Families was set up in response to the needs of more and more families across the capital, and have helped over 525 children in London already. They offer advice and support on debt and housing issues, help with fuel vouchers and can even cover essential costs such as school uniforms, shoes and winter coats.

Why a resilient child is a stronger child

Building resilience in our children is a very important issue for parents and schools. Children are now subjected to more pressures at an earlier age than they ever have been before. Their defence—their resilience—helps them to cope and take any difficulties in their stride.

MISTAKES ARE ‘LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES’ One of the simple ways we are helping pupils here at Parkgate to become more resilient is to help them understand that mistakes are ‘learning opportunities’. If children aren’t afraid to make mistakes and realise that by making them they can move forward in their learning or approach, then they will very quickly become more robust. Children watch adults’ behaviour carefully and look to see how they respond to situations for guidance. It therefore follows that if we can model a resilient approach as teachers or parents, including how we approach any mistakes that are made, then our children are likely to follow suit.

LEARN TO PERSEVERE Following on from learning from mistakes, perseverance is another important trait in a resilient individual. Children have to learn that in order to become good at something or successful in a given area, it is likely to require a lot of work over a period of time and this is something that we emphasise to our pupils. Very few people are successful without a lot of hard work and the recent British success at the Olympics highlights individuals who have dedicated hours and hours to improving their sport.

It can be really beneficial for children to research a hero of theirs from any walk of life to find out how dedicated they are. It shows them that resilient individuals don’t just give up. That’s how children realise that when something is difficult they get a sense of achievement from accomplishing it, and that’s what makes it more enjoyable.

SHARE YOUR ISSUES WITH OTHERS Communication is also a big factor in building resilient children. Pupils here at Parkgate have the opportunity to discuss any issues they are facing and how they can approach them. We also encourage them to ask questions. By discussing their anxieties or preparing in advance for situations they will face, our pupils feel more settled and better prepared.

This is particularly important when thinking about the amount of time children spend online outside school and the different situations they may encounter. The Internet is a fantastic tool, however it is still a relatively new way of communicating. Children need to learn what is acceptable online behaviour and at the same time be resilient enough to both cope with and stand up to what isn’t acceptable. Looking to the future, this is probably the area where making children more resilient will have the most positive effect.

JUST LAUGH IT OFF! Humour is another important and often overlooked factor in resilient individuals and returns to the theme of adults acting as role models.

Resilient individuals can laugh at themselves and not take themselves too seriously. If children can see that we can laugh at ourselves when things don’t go exactly as planned, it will help them accept life’s ups and downs more easily. Helping our pupils become more resilient is an important part of our work here at Parkgate and will help ensure our children are ready to embrace their future.

Ensuring your child arrives at school on time, and not in a rush, gets them off to a relaxed start that positively impacts the rest of their day. Making sure they arrive with the right basic equipment also means they can begin to enjoy their learning as soon as class starts.

An agreed place for homework establishes a good precedent Keeping track of homework can prevent last minute anxiety for parents and children. Encourage your child to write down their homework as accurately as possible, and do check their homework or home/school contact books daily. Where possible an adult should be on hand to provide support, particularly for younger children.

Happy boys and girls make happy students Every child’s emotional barometer is different, but there are some simple actions that can help to support and build emotional capacity. A good night’s sleep is priceless for its positive impact on learning and behaviour, as is regular exercise, although I often advise parents not to overdo afterschool or out-of-school activities. A sensible diet and regular mealtimes are also hugely beneficial to help regulate moods.

To help your child to take charge of their emotional needs, tell them it is healthy to talk about how they feel, and try to have regular chats about out of school topics as well as their school days, school friends and learning. Encourage them to talk to their teachers, and make sure they know who to see if they are feeling worried about something.

RECORD EXAM RESULTS AT SYDENHAM HIGH Along with the soaring temperatures this summer, Sydenham High girls school has been basking in the warmth of top grade success. Almost two thirds of GSCE grades were in the A and A* range, bucking the national trend. 20 things you need to know when choosing a school

Make up your own mind. It's amazing how many parents never even look round a school because of what they've heard. A school that doesn't suit another family could be just right for yours.

Listen to your child's feelings as well as your own. Choosing his or her primary is down to just you and your partner; but your 10 or 11-year-old deserves a say.

Use open days wisely. If you can, go to a daytime visit you'll see it in working mode.

Nothing advertises a school like its pupils. Do they seem happy? Are they engaged? If you have time, pass by at going-home time. Are they well-behaved?

How about the staff - do they seem fulfilled and cheery working there? Take opportunities to chat to them.

Listen to your instincts. If a school doesn't feel right, move on.

You don't have to explain yourself or your reasons for doing so to anyone else.

Don't get bogged down in the detail: what you're aiming to get is a sense of the school. Does it feel happy, productive, calm? Is there a sense of order and caring? These things matter more than the nitty-gritty.

Think about your child's talents and interests and ponder carefully whether they'll be catered for. Then add what the school offers that might be harder to pick up at home.

Pay attention to what's on the walls - and not just the artwork.

What are children being warned about, or encouraged to do?

Are there any school visits being advertised? Which clubs seem to be thriving?

10 Look at the school's league tables, but don't pin everything on them. Read the Ofsted report too and pay particular attention to how the school has done over time. If it's had a dip, are there signs of improvement or suggestions that it could turn round?

11 Where do pupils go on to from this school? You want to see at least some youngsters doing well academically and aiming for good courses at top universities as it shows support for the most ambitious.

12 Go to the head teacher's talk and take your notebook.

This is an important part of the event: not only do you need to pick up on the head's attitude and values and what matters most to him or her, but you also need to pay special attention to anything that's said about the entrance criteria. Understanding that is the crucial next stage.

13 If you like a school, do your homework about whether your child fits its entrance requirements. However much you love the school, and however much you think your child would thrive there, you'll only get a place if you fulfill the criteria. Read the school's entrance policy through very, very carefully. If you don't fulfill the requirements, could you change something so you do? If not, move on: there's no point in wasting a choice or railing against something you can't change.

14 You're bound to talk to other parents, and you want to talk to other parents, but don't get pulled along by their tide. Do your own research and develop your own views: knowledge is power.

15 Keep telling yourself (because it's true!) that there is no perfect school. Every school has strengths and weaknesses.

There's more than one school that can be right for your child.

16 When the time comes to fill in the forms, allow yourself lots of time and do it extremely carefully. There may be supplementary forms, and there may be complicated arrangements for giving them in.

17 Have a plan of action for what you'll do if you don't get the school you're hoping for. Just having that plan will make you feel more relaxed.

18 Remember that there's a lot of movement in the first few weeks after places are allocated, and many children get in from waiting lists.

19 Don't underestimate how much hard work an appeal can be, or how emotionally draining. That's not to say don't do it: just be prepared.

20 Even if your child doesn't get into your first choice of school your attitude to that could be a much bigger factor in what happens next for your child than the school itself.

The Red Tent movement

Helena investigates the international ‘red tent’ movement of monthly women’s gatherings that has now reached south west London.

I’m in a community centre meeting room in Streatham, sitting crosslegged in a circle of six other women. On a red cloth in the centre there’s a lighted candle and red carnations. I’ve attended several red tent gatherings and the same thing happens each time I take my place on a cushion in the circle: my shoulders relax. The stresses of the day fade away. I feel at home.

This isn’t time for me to do anything. It’s time for me to simply be.

It all started with a book Streatham Red Tent, which celebrated its first birthday in August of this year, was set up by Melonie Syrett, a part-time deputy head-teacher and holistic health practitioner. The inspiration was attending several women’s retreats and reading the word-of-mouth bestseller, ‘The Red Tent’ by Anita Diamant. The novel is the imagined story of Dinah, who appears briefly in the Bible’s Book of Genesis, the only sister of Jacob’s infamous twelve sons (including Joseph of Technicolour dreamcoat fame). In the first part of the story, Dinah recounts the stories of her mothers – the four wives of Jacob – gleaned from within the secluded intimacy of the red tent, the nomadic menstrual hut; and also the place where the women tend to each other during pregnancy, miscarriage and childbirth.

Celebrating womanhood Diamant’s further novels all tend towards the same theme: the connections, support and sisterhood between women. What really seems to have sparked readers’ imagination however, are the accounts of ancient menstrual rites. It is believed that in the days before electric light, women who lived close to the earth cycled with the moon (in the Native American tradition, the red tent was known as the moonlodge). Dinah’s mothers gather in the tent to bleed together and rest for three days at new moon until the first crescent appears in the sky. All cooking and childcare duties are left to the rest of the tribe. When Dinah reaches menarche (her first period), her mothers celebrate her womanhood with an ebullient welcoming ceremony. “I laughed until my sides ached. I smiled until my face hurt,” Dinah says. “It was good to be a woman!”

Gathering momentum Usually held on the new moon, red tents are popping up all over Britain, Europe and America. According to the online Red Tent Directory, there were 83 red tents in the UK in early summer with an average of one new tent joining up per week. Some women’s wellbeing practitioners are running their own paid-for versions, which aren’t listed. For the community red tents in the directory, the format is flexible. Some groups like to try creative activities, simple calming meditations or take turns sharing how they are feeling.

Red tents might seem like a New Age fad, but there is some science to explain women’s yearning to connect in this way. A research paper published in 2000 in the journal of The American Psychological Association, revealed that women have a different primary response to stress than men. Although women still ‘fight, flee or freeze’ in the face of imminent physical danger (like being chased by a lion), when it comes to dealing with daily stress, their instinctive, hormonal response is one of ‘tend and befriend.’

Oxytocin boost The research was carried out after two social psychology professors, Shelley E Taylor and Laura Klein at The University of California in Los Angeles, noticed different behaviour patterns between the men and women in their lab when under stress. Whilst the men liked to disappear into their proverbial caves and return when they were feeling better, the women preferred to come into work, clean up, have coffee and bond.

When it comes to stress, men tend to flee while women have the urge to connect and nest, triggering the calming ‘cuddle chemical’ oxytocin, which, as we know, is also key in breastfeeding and mother-child bonding.

Detoxify your home

Your body is constantly under assault. Now, more than any other time in history, you need your immune system functioning at its best. The reality is that most of us are swimming in a kind of toxic soup, and it’s not just the pollution from the busy streets.

There’s lots we can do to reap the benefits of ditching the chemicals and opting for 100 per cent natural solutions in the home. Once you become a parent there’s usually a new consciousness around providing only the most natural nutrition and many parents are scrupulous about checking for e-numbers and additives in food and drink, but how often do you check ingredients on your skincare products and the myriad of cleaning products used in most homes?

Ditch artificial fragrances A good place to start is by ditching the artificial fragrances, known to exacerbate insomnia, headaches and respiratory problems. Forget conventional air fresheners also, and avoid the wall mounted ones which emit synthetic fragrance.

For DIY air freshening simply half fill a plastic plant spray bottle with filtered tap water and add a couple of drops of essential oil. Eucalyptus and tea tree are 'antibacterial' while lemon or citronella are zingy and refreshing, add a drop of vodka or vinegar to preserve or change the water regularly.

For general cleaning go old style; the usual suspects, Bicarbonate of soda, white vinegar and a microfibre cloth work wonders but the best ingredient of all is the one we have all forgotten, it costs nothing and yet it’s the most effective of all –Elbow Grease – you can get a great workout and burn a few calories at the same time!
