Fulfilling New Year’s resolutions for mums
Make 2014 your most fulfilling year yet!
As you pack away the last of the Christmas decorations, hoover up the pine needles left by the tree and send the kids back to school, you finally have a moment to reflect on the past year and plan for the year ahead. The New Year can bring with it a sense of trepidation and excitement – what will the next 12 months have in store for you? It’s the perfect opportunity for you to take control and set new challenges and goals that will increase the sense of fulfillment in your life. Being a mum is undoubtedly one of the most rewarding roles in life but there’s no denying it can also be draining and frustrating. Whether it’s juggling the constant demands of work and family, tackling the endless domestic chores or simply being stuck in a bit of a ‘life rut’ doing the same things with your family – sometimes we need to recognise when life feels dull and unrewarding and take steps to do something exciting and new. Fiona Clark, career and confidence coach from Inspired Mums, has worked with hundreds of mums to identify what really motivates them. Here she gives her expert advice on how to gain a greater sense of fulfilment in your life. you’re not alone – why mums start feeling unfulfilled… There are many different reasons mums can start feeling unfulfilled, but here are the three most common ones:
• When we become a mum we can feel that somehow our identities get ‘lost’ – especially when other mums start referring to us simply as ‘Joshua’s Mum’. In fact we are still the same person, often with the same drive to succeed and be interesting in our own right. • Many of us initially enjoy a change of pace or lifestyle when we’re on maternity leave or career break. It’s wonderful not to commute or deal with high-pressure meetings and instead meet up with local mummy friends for coffee. However, for some mums, after a while the slower pace of life can be hard to get used to – and dare I say it – boring. That’s when mums start to feel like they need ‘something else’ in their lives – and its not necessarily work. • As mums we are experts at putting others first. We are so busy prioritising everyone else’s needs that often this realisation only hits when your youngest starts full-time school and suddenly your house is empty and you wonder ‘now what? – what about me?!’ My key piece of advice is to give yourself permission to act with your heart, as well as your head. All too often we do what we think is ‘right’ and will please others, but it can be very liberating to focus on yourself and what makes you happy.
So how do you make sure you concentrate on your own needs and build more fulfilment into your life without upsetting the apple cart at home? How to discover what’s missing in your life Here are two practical exercises to help you work out what you have now and what you need to feel more fulfilled: exercise 1 – discover how balanced your life is Write down the six areas of your life that are most important to you. For example: family, friends, social life, health, career, finances, learning & development, hobbies and so on. Then draw a circle and allocate space for each of these areas depending on how happy and fulfilled you are in each of these areas This should give you an immediate visual picture of where you aren’t feeling fulfilled and indicate what areas you need to work on first! exercise 2 – what would give you more fulfilment? Ask yourself these 7 questions to identify what will add more meaning to your life: • What gives you energy? • What has to happen for you to feel successful? • What would make the biggest difference to your happiness right now?

• If there were no limits, what would you like to do with your life? • What is happening when you are feeling at your most relaxed and happy? • What unfulfilled dreams do you hold? • When you are looking back on your life, what do you want to be proud of? Let your mind run free – there are no right or wrong answers, and remember you know yourself better than anyone else. Use these results to help compile your list of New Year resolutions and take practical steps to make sure you achieve them. Finally, be positive about the journey to a more fulfilled life – don’t beat yourself up that you haven’t done this earlier – simply be grateful and appreciate all the positive things you already have and enjoy the changes you are putting into place. Good luck on your journey to a very happy and fulfilling 2014!

education
When you should (...and shouldn’t) tutor your children Before embarking on tutoring, there should be some very specific reasons for doing so...
At this time, when schools are hard pressed to provide essential resources and budgets are tighter than ever, parents may wish to look outside of school for additional immediate support for their children’s needs. Tutoring children may be helpful when children have missed school through illness or personal trauma and gaps are evident resulting in lack of confidence, resistance to attending school and developing low self-esteem. Periods of targeted tutoring may be a good idea to address misconceptions in maths, or particular difficulties with English, exam techniques, study skills or organisational skills; all areas where a period of targeted tutoring and reviews will make a huge difference. Some children may need additional support to help them work in other ways; with additional strategies; if your child
has special educational needs such as dyslexia, dyscalculia or other specific learning difficulties. Alternatively, they may have ASD, ADHD or requires social skills support. All of these special needs would benefit from additional support inside and outside of school. Before sitting 11+ examinations it is really important to match the right secondary school to your child – both pastorally and academically. In order to do this successfully you need to know how clever your child is – not how bright they are in their class but how they compare against the national average, and indeed how they compare against their potential – are they achieving in school what they should be achieving given their raw ability. Once you have recognised what schools are best then it is time to devise a plan to support them with their journey
By Lorrae Jaderberg and Katie Krais
to get there. This may well involve one to one tutoring but it is important that this tutoring is not to make your child into a level that is not naturally theirs... hot housing and blitzing may occasionally get the desired outcome but when a child who essentially is not suited to the top academic schools squeeze through due to intense tutoring as soon as they start the school they being to fail and will always find themselves in the bottom groups – not a comfortable place to be for anyone. However, even for the brightest students there is a need for tutoring to help them pass the 11+. This is because for many children the curriculum which is taught at primary level does not fully cover the type of questions which are asked in many of the 11+ exams – for example algebra questions. Verbal and non verbal reasoning is also a requirement for many exams and these tests are not taught as part of the national curriculum. Thus a full programme to prepare for the common entrance examinations is important – but should not be confused with tutoring to pass an exam for a school which is not right for your child in the first place.
If you would like more information about tutoring (5-18yrs, SEN, 11+) and how to test your child’s ability and find out which schools are the most suitable for your child please contact Katie Krais on: Mobile: 07956111728, Email : info@jaderbergkrais.co.uk or see www.jaderbergkrais.co.uk

education training really confirmed for me that this is the way young children should learn. Children are more happy and relaxed outside, they build confidence and resilience as they learn how to solve problems and manage risks in a practical way. There are so many opportunities to develop creativity and language outdoors, quiet children begin to talk more and ultimately they develop a more positive attitude to learning. As a mum of three she also understands the challenges of bringing up children in London: ‘I know how much my own children need time outdoors, especially my three-year-old boy, who has so much energy. But with rising property prices, more people living in flats and fewer homes with gardens, children don’t always have the opportunity to spend a lot of time outside.’ NHS guidelines say that children under five need three hours exercise a day and that it should be a mixture of bone strengthening, muscle building and cardiovascular activity. But there are other health benefits gained simply from being outdoors. Research published recently by England’s chief medical officer Professor Dame Sally Davies found that there has been a rise in cases of rickets in children. This is from lack of exposure to sunlight leading to vitamin D deficiency. Shaw concludes: ‘Exercise and exposure to nature is clearly an essential component of children’s physical and emotional development, and one of the significant health benefits of choosing an outdoor nursery for your child. At Into The Woods, we ensure that through activities such as running, climbing, digging and swinging from branches, our children’s needs are more than met every day.’
NORTH LONDON TO GET ITS FIRST OUTDOOR NURSERY Parents invited to register their interest at www.intothewoodsnursery.co.uk North London’s first outdoor nursery will be based in Highgate Wood and Queens Wood. Children from two and a half to five years old will learn and play in the woods all year round, enjoying a unique outdoors education that has proven health benefits. This ‘Forest School’ approach is popular in Northern Europe, particularly in Scandinavia and there has been a growth in interest here in the UK as studies show children benefit from spending their days in more active and natural learning environments. ‘Into the Woods Nursery’ is inviting parents to register their interest now and will be fully up and running by the spring. Founder Emma Shaw is a local primary school teacher and specialist in early years education, she comments: ‘I’d always believed in the importance of outdoor play, but going on Forest School

KU core Curriculum
The KU core curriculum is offered in addition to your children’s daily activities. Whilst they are attending the nursery there will be physical, music, gardening and art activities on offer as part of their everyday routine. These activities will be built around the interests of the children and are designed to engage them and encourage them to take the next steps in their individual developmental journey. The core curriculum sessions will be offered at set times and staff leading these sessions will have received specialist training and may also be a champion in this area. A champion is defined as one of our on-site practitioners who will cascade the training throughout the team and will have a wealth of knowledge in their specialist area.

Special Needs
Why your child should have rhythmic skills and what you can do to help By Usha Patel Learning Difficulties Therapist
Bal-A-Vis-X is an exercise programme to help learning suited to all. It stands for Balance, Auditory Vision, eXercise and is often used to support children with special educational needs. It addresses all the fundamental skills required by a child before they start in the academic word of school. Bal-AVis-X is also very unique in providing a vital skill that is not nurtured enough in schools and affects how well and fast children absorb information. This skill is ‘rhythm!’ Why is Rhythm so VeRy important? To understand rhythm and its importance we have to start with the unborn baby. Rhythm begins in the womb when the baby is listening and feeling the rhythmic patterns of his/ her mother’s heart beat, breathing and movement patterns. These rhythmic patterns provide the much needed motor-sensory patterning required later for nursing, crawling, walking, skipping and jumping. The imprint of patterning at this early stage in development is also linked to language acquisition. Without this implicit skill of rhythm motor planning and co-ordination is poor. For a new mum watching her new baby crawl is a great example of rhythmic movement. So is watching an adult ‘galloping’ down a long stair case. The agility, timing, and pace required to run down a set of stairs can be so fascinating to watch, and is as telling as being able to dance! It is this ‘getting into pace’ that allows automatic flow. And without automatic flow movement appears awkwardly disjointed and clumsy. How do rhythmic skills help and if your child is struggling with motor coordination can you help? If you know of an adult that can’t dance you know what is meant by the saying you either ‘have rhythm or your don’t!’ But rhythm can be taught by parents
and professionals alike. The techniques used in Bal-A-Vis-X are all teachable and can be transferred successfully from the parent/teacher to the child with little ease. Using inexpensive materials of small bouncy balls, or small sand filled bags, the process of tossing/catching or bouncing/catching help embed a skill which are relatively impossible to learn if ‘you don’t have rhythm naturally.’ And, you don’t need to be an athlete to do this programme. Children start off by passing the sandbags (hand size) rhythmically in place of throwing or rolling a large ball rhythmically instead of bouncing. Incremental steps bridge the new learners’ gaps and slowly they start doing what may have been conceived as impossible before. The rhythmic skill learnt in Bal-a-vis-x is transferred to better football, swimming, writing, bike riding, dancing, playing the piano and many other things! Who uses it and how is used to help struggling learners? Bal-A-Vis-X is used in the classroom by teachers TAs, Occupational therapists and parents with SEN children. It is a programme that encourages children to teach one another. The movement and rhythmic patterns help embed/retain information which would otherwise be random. Seeing children grasp concepts of sequencing is very satisfying especially as these exercises are perceived as fun. Children do not want to stop. It is pretty difficult to get them to put the balls down when their time is up! With over 300 exercises to teach there is a challenge for all levels of ability. When and where is the next training? London April 4th 5th 6th
Bal-A-Vis-X is a schools based programme you should talk to your school and see if a teacher can enrol. If the school don’t listen(!) and you want to be empowered to help your child, give me a call on 07766 837616 or book online www.integratedbrain.co.uk. The next training is in London. It is over three days – 4th, 5th and 6th April, 2014.
BAL-A-VIS-X LONDON WORKSHOP early booking closes 31st Jan Bal-A-Vis-X is a rhythmic exercise programme used by parents, teachers and OTs in group settings and one-toone with children. parenting
The amazing attachment process with your child Bonding with your baby is a very special experience and it is the beginning of a very unique and long lasting relationship. So why has human nature developed this process, and how you can use it to your advantage to help your child slowly become an independent, well balanced, confident individual who understands boundaries? The London Nanny Consultant looks into how the attachment you form with your child over the years develops and how this helps your child learn to understand others, his or her self and the world. In many of my sleep or behavioural consultations something has usually happened along the way where parents and children have lost trust or respect for each other. In these cases parents have often lost their confidence in parenting by losing control of the situation and as a result they also lose their parental instinct. So let’s look at how the parent child relationship works and how you can use this bond to get your child to respond to you in the right way. attachment When a child is born human nature has designed a system whereby a natural attachment occurs not only for survival reasons, but also to form emotional bonds. This complex two way relationship is a psychological umbilical cord by which children develop both physically and mentally. This is the beginning of an amazing emotional bond and helps you to guide your child through each developmental stage to become an independent confident individual who can go out and make their own way in the world. empathic attunement In the beginning in order to develop this attachment you become empathetically attuned to your baby through signals that he or she may give you either physically or verbally. Your baby will demonstrate his or her needs to you and you will respond to them through feeding, eye contact, touch, smiling, movement such as rocking or patting, communication and cuddles. This is important because not only will it make you feel wonderful, but it makes the baby feel relaxed, safe, secure and he or she will come to trust you. You are also starting to teach them empathy. This attunement is incredibly powerful and it is through this that down the road you can teach your child right from wrong. When you reprimand your child
for a behaviour that you disapprove of a misattunement occurs. Your child in response to your reaction becomes ashamed of his or herself which is how you guide and teach your child the rules of life. However it is important that you then reattune with your child to show them that you still love them and they are special to you and are special themselves and you understand that they are learning and this is only behaviour. Validation Along with this attunement comes validation. This is when you recognise situations and emotions that your child may be experiencing in his world such as feeling angry, happy, scared or sad and you show them that you understand these feelings, that it is ok to experience them and that you can help them through these feelings. It is important not to try to make the child feel something that they are not feeling and see the world from your point of view or to persuade them out of these feelings. A good example of this is when temper tantrums start to surface, these emotions are new to a child and it is important to let them get it out of their system by acknowledging these emotions. Containment You can also help children learn to manage these feelings healthily by staying calm in the face of strong feelings yourself, this helps the child to learn to contain and manage their own feelings.
When adults have been kind enough to have stayed strong, kind or empathetic during the child’s intense feelings the child will learn to do the same. Soothing. When a child is soothed after the whole experience then this will release natural opiates in the brain and help them to calm down. This teaches your child to eventually internalise this and learn to soothe themselves so giving your child a hug after a temper tantrum is very important. As a parent understanding the process of attachment, and learning what your child is experiencing whilst growing up will help you to stop and think about when and how to discipline your child effectively and with love. This will help you develop confidence in your own natural instinct as a parent. Stopping, Looking and Listening to your child’s needs and actions before you react will help you to parent in the right way. For more information on techniques and how to discipline your child with love Miranda Tibble can be contacted at info@thelondonnannyconsultant.co.uk or on 07751 421327. She is a Norland trained nanny with 25 years of worldwide experience and now has her own business as The London Nanny Consultant. www.thelondonnannyconsultant.co.uk

Quality family time on holidays is very precious but achieving stress-free holidays isn’t that easy for most people – especially when travelling with children. Lucilla Paull, a mum of two, loves travelling with her family but recounts difficulties in finding the right holiday accommodation when she became a mum much more challenging. When she fell ill, brought about by her very difficult second pregnancy and disastrous spinal surgery, Lucilla had to quit her job in the City. So, whilst sipping cold beer by the pool on a holiday in the enchanting sunflower region of Poitou-Charentes in France, with the enjoyment of her beautiful sons and husband in mind, Recommended Family Holidays was born. RecommendedFamilyHolidays.com, is the ‘one-stop’ shop where families can find suitable holiday accommodation tailored to their needs and priorities. Planning trips independently is ideal, however trawling the internet for hours to find the perfect holiday can be rather soul-destroying and sometimes just plain impossible. The website makes the task much easier, with recommendations from other mums and dads who have actually experienced the various destinations listed. Whether you opt for a budget short break in the UK during the Easter school holidays or a luxurious escape to different parts of Europe for the summer, or indeed a family-friendly ski trip, Lucilla and Recommended Family Holidays will help you find your perfect holiday accommodation. Why not plan your next holiday today?
Call to action!
Based on her delicious home-cooked recipes, you can now find even more varieties of annabel Karmel’s chilled toddler meals at sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Ocado (rrp £2.75).

My Hamster is a Spy
by Dave Lowe (Templar £5.99)
Ed Says: ‘When Ben Jinks’ house is burgled his super-brainy hamster decides they need to do some surveillance – or at least snooping, like in their favourite television programme Spy Gang. Ben soon finds that spying isn’t as cool as he first thought. But they think that Ben’s scary teacher meeting the school bully’s brothers may be a good lead and the unusual pair hatch a plan to catch the criminals. ‘Will Ben be able to explain that his hamster is a genius and is able to talk? This is a very funny story for boys and girls to enjoy reading on their own or reading together.’
Claude on the Slopes
by alex T smith (Hodder £7.99)
Ed Says: ‘Claude, the most charming dog you could ever meet, and his best friend Sir Bobblysock are amazed to see a blanket

of snow covering the street. They soon realise that they are going to have an exciting day with a snowball fight, sledging, building a snowman, skiing – oh… and causing an avalanche. ‘Curl up in the warmth and be amused by this super snowy story and laugh out loud at Claude’s latest hilarious adventure. This book with its fantastic illustrations is a delight from start to finish.’

Layla Queen of Hearts by glenda Millard (Phoenix yard Books £5.99)
Ed Says: ‘Griffin Silk’s best friend Layla is like a gift to the Silk family after Griffin’s little sister Tishkin went out of their lives – and Layla delights in the time she spends with them all. For Seniors’ Day at school, Griffin says Layla can share his grandmother Nell but, much as she adores Nell, Layla longs for someone special of her own to invite. This is when Miss Amelie comes into their lives and brings something unique to the children. ‘This is a wonderful tale about the power of friendship and a small but life changing miracle. The warmhearted story is accompanied by lovely thought-provoking illustrations.’

Stay Where You Are and Then Leave
by John Boyne (Doubleday £10.99)
Ed Says: ‘The hard times and struggles of the First World War are seen through the eyes of young Alfie Summerfield whose father has gone to fight for his country. As time passes and with no more letters home, Alfie thinks his father must be on a secret mission. He by chance gets a lead as to where he might be and, troubled and bewildered, he is determined to find out what has happened to his father. ‘This moving story is brilliantly written and will be appreciated not only by older children but also by adults. It is sure to linger in your heart and mind particularly as WW1 is commemorated this year.’
