health

What is Parkinson’s? Julia Keogh, who works directly with people with Parkinson’s, discusses the challenges people face, and a new range of books aimed to help young children understand more about the condition. Parkinson’s affects 127,000 people in the UK, is progressive, and there is currently no cure. Parkinson’s develops when dopamine producing nerve cells in the brain die, and typical symptoms are stiffness, tremor and slowness of movement. Alongside the physical problems, a host of less-visible symptoms can develop, like anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, bowel and bladder disorders, and dementia. It is a very individual condition, and no two people will experience living with Parkinson’s in the same way. The right medication can help many people to control the symptoms, and keeping active for as long as possible and eating healthily can all help to make life enjoyable. Although Parkinson’s is often seen as a condition that only affects older people, that is not always the case. One in twenty people will be diagnosed under the age of forty. What is certain is that with an ageing population, the number of people with conditions like Parkinson’s can only grow. This will be a huge challenge for our health and social care services. As an Information and Support Manager for the charity Parkinson’s UK, working across the London region, I offer one-to-one support to many people with the condition. My team and I see firsthand the difficulties that people face, and try to help the whole family come to terms with what a diagnosis of Parkinson’s can mean.

Parkinson’s in the family It can be particularly difficult for family members, particularly the young, to understand that underneath the sometimes scary public face of Parkinson’s, their relatives are still the same person. Responding to this need, Parkinson’s UK have produced a new range of books aimed specifically at younger children aged between three and seven, which explain Parkinson’s in simple terms. The four books, written by newspaper columnist and agony aunt Virginia Ironside, aim to make it easier for parents and grandparents to sit down, and share the storyline with younger family members. The plain language and bright illustrations by Matthew Dodd should help children to understand why their relatives with Parkinson’s behave and act as they do, and this can only improve family life.

toP tiPs for exPLaining ParKinson’s to cHiLdren • Keep things simple • Only talk about the symptoms that currently affect the family member • Don’t look too far ahead, there is no way of knowing what the future will hold The books, My Mum has Parkinson’s, My Dad has Parkinson’s, My Gran has Parkinson’s, My Grandpa has Parkinson’s, are free, and can be ordered by calling 0845 121 2354 or emailing resources@ parkinsons.org.uk. They can also be downloaded from www.parkinsons.org. uk. For more information about living with Parkinson’s, call the freephone helpline on 0808 800 0303.

education • parties Jaderberg Krais 11+ Mock Examinations Exam Preparation is critical to make sure children feel fully-confident to manage their 11+ entrance exams. Beforehand, find out what will be in the test and the types of questions. Do lots of practice and work on test technique, which also includes practising working in test conditions. Your child will need to know and learn the curriculum content; be familiar with the sorts of questions that may be asked; know how to answer them; have an understanding of what the examiner will be looking for and, finally, to know the formats and procedures for the tests.

Practising past papers is very helpful and will boost confidence. We have created the JKT 11+ Mock Exams to provide realistic practice in exam conditions. Designed by experts, firstly to provide practice for the state selective schools, (held in June) and is suitable for children sitting for schools such as: Latymer, QE, Mill Hill County, Dame Alice Owen’s and Henrietta Barnett, and secondly the November exam, is intended for those children sitting the second round of the state selective schools and the independent schools’ entrance exams, all being held in January. These exams include verbal and non-verbal reasoning, maths and English. They help

children practise their time-management and staying calm – even if faced with question types they have not seen before. The results are drawn-up in a report, which summarises and provides detailed recommendations for the next steps of revision, further teaching and progression. The JKT 11+ Mock Exams have proved to be an invaluable part of children’s preparation. The next JKT 11+ Mock Exam will be held on Sunday 8th June 2014. For more information, or to book a place for your child to sit the JKT Mock 11+ Exam, please call Katie Krais on: 07956 111728 or visit: www.jaderbergkrais.co.uk

Party Food Party food can be as wild and whacky as you want it, a real excuse to let out your inner child and make food with as much embellishment as you like.

Flower Pot Cakes from Princess Party Cookbook, Ebury Press, £12.99

Makes 4 Chocolate Cakes 110 g (4 oz) butter, at room temperature, plus extra for greasing 110 g (4 oz) golden caster sugar 2 eggs 1 tsp of vanilla extract 85 g (3 oz) self-raising flour 4 tbsp cocoa powder Pinch of salt Decoration 280 g (10 oz) ready-made light brown regal icing, or 280 g (10 oz) ready-made white royal icing coloured brown by mixing together yellow, red and black food colouring

3 tbsp apricot jam 100 g (3½ oz) white chocolate 20 g (¾ oz) desiccated coconut Yellow and orange M&Ms Some drops of green food colouring or ½ tsp Japanese green tea powder 8 wooden skewers Icing sugar, for dusting You will also need 4 dariole moulds, a 900 g (2 lb) loaf tin, a star or flower shaped cookie cutter (about 4 cm/2 in), a tear shaped cookie cutter and some baking parchment. Preheat the oven to 180ºC (350ºF) Fan 160ºC. Grease 4 Dariole moulds and line the bases with circles of baking parchment.

10

families_north_issue_108_artwork.indd 10

Grease the loaf tin and line with baking parchment. Cream together the butter and sugar until pale and fluffy. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs and vanilla then beat into the butter mixture a little at a time. Sift over the flour, cocoa and salt and fold in well. Divide between the prepared moulds to half-full. The remaining mixture goes into the loaf tin; spread it evenly, about 1 cm (½ in) thick. Place the dariole moulds and the loaf tin in the oven and bake for 15-17 minutes until risen and firm. Allow to cool and then remove from the dariole moulds and the loaf tin to a wire rack until completely cold. Using a rolling pin, roll out the light brown royal icing to make 20 x 30cm (8 x 12 in) rectangle. Using a sharp knife and a ruler, cut the icing to fit around the sides of the dariole cakes, so they look like pots – about 5-6cm (2-2½ in), depending on how high the cakes are – then make four thin strips, about 1.5cm (1 in) for the pot rims. Re-roll the trimmings to make the strips, if necessary. Warm the apricot jam gently in a small pan and brush the sloped sides of the dariole cakes with the jam. Wrap the brown icing around the cakes, and gently press to help the icing to stick to the cake. Trim away the excess. Attach the strips of icing to make a rim on each flowerpot, using a little water if necessary. Using a cookie cutter, cut out four flower shapes and leaves from the loaf-tin cake. Break the white chocolate into small pieces and melt over a bowl of simmering water. Dip one side of the flower cakes into the chocolate and cool on a wire rack. Sprinkle with coconut of top and place an M&M in the centre. Add some drops of the green food colouring or the green tea powder to the rest of the melted chocolate. Dip the leaves into the green chocolate and set aside to harden. To serve, attach the flower and the leaves to the pot using wooden skewers (remove skewers before eating).

Princess Party Cookbook, Ebury Press

Tropical Smoothie Delicious fruits grow on tropical islands – mango, pineapple, vanilla and coconut. Whizzed together they make a luscious smoothie, perfect for sipping on the beach. You could add a squeeze of lime juice but I like the creamy sweetness of this recipe. The mangoes do need to be ripe. You can freeze the mango and banana to make a thicker drink or just use the fruit unfrozen.

Makes 2 portions (easily increased) 1 small banana, peeled and sliced into 2cm chunks 1 large, very ripe mango – peeled, pitted and cut into 2cm chunks 200ml (7fl oz) pineapple juice 2 tbsp vanilla yoghurt 2 tbsp coconut milk 1-2 tsp honey (to taste) Slices of fresh pineapple, maraschino cherries and umbrellas, to decorate Put the mango and banana in a resealable bag and freeze for 3-4 hours, until firm. (This makes a thicker drink, but you can use the fruit unfrozen, if you prefer.) Put the fruit chunks, pineapple juice, yoghurt, coconut milk and 1 tsp honey in a blender and whiz until smooth. Taste and add the extra teaspoon of honey if needed. Pour into chilled glasses and decorate with slices of pineapple, maraschino cherries and umbrellas to serve. Party planning – the fruit can be prepared and frozen up to 1 week in advance.

Coconut Prawn Skewers Succulent seafood is a mainstay of the islands and perfect for a BBQ as they cook quickly. I have threaded some red onions on to the skewers to make them look a bit more interesting, but you can leave them out if you prefer. If you butterfly the prawns (make a deep cut down the back) they curve nicely. Leave the tails on for a more attractive presentation.

Makes 8 skewers 100ml (3½ fl oz) creamed coconut Juice 1/2 lime 2 tsp soy sauce 2 tsp sweet chilli sauce, or honey 1 tsp grated fresh ginger 1 clove garlic, crushed 16 extra large raw prawns (approx. 300g/11oz), shells removed and de-veined. 1 red onion, cut into thin wedges (optional) Lime wedges, to serve You will also need 8 wooden skewers, soaked in water for at least 30 minutes. Mix together the coconut milk, lime, soy and sweet chilli sauces, ginger and garlic with a little freshly ground black pepper. Add the prawns and toss to coat, then cover and marinate in the fridge for a minimum of 2 hours, or preferable overnight. Remove the prawns from the marinade. Thread 1 piece of red onion onto a skewer (if using), followed by a prawn, another piece of red onion, a second prawn and finally a third piece of red onion. Barbecue the skewers over medium-hot coals for 3 minutes, then turn and cook for another 2-3 minutes, until the prawns are pink and cooked through and the red onions are soft. The skewers can also be cooked under a grill that has been pre-heated to high. Serve with lime wedges.

Mini Pizza Faces Ingredients Half a small red onion, chopped (25g)
 2 tsp olive oil
 1 tbsp tomato puree
 2 tsp sundried tomato paste
 1 tbsp later
 2 English muffins
 2 tbsp Sweetcorn
 2 slices of ham
2 5g Mozzarella or grated Cheddar Suggested Toppings (enough for 2 pizzas)
mushrooms, sliced and sautéed in 1 tsp olive oil
 1 ring pineapple, diced
 stoned black olives, thinly sliced
baby courgette, thinly sliced and sautéed in 1 tsp olive oil
 sunblush tomatoes, diced
 1 rasher cooked bacon, crumbled
Strips of sweet pepper Mini Face Pizza

If you don’t have time, you can just as much fun ‘accessorising’ food you have bought with funny faces or cut into different shapes; there is no end to the fun you can have with party food, and that is just the adults making it! Get the kids involved deciding on a theme and making food to go with it, or have a cooking party, my kids used to love doing this and all the kids would make their own toppings for pizza or decorate cupcakes.

Its easy to make your own ‘Healthy Fast Food’ like this mini pizza which uses split toasted muffins for the pizza base. Let your child choose his own favourite toppings and he may like to decorate it with a face. Method Heat the olive oil and sauté the onion for 3 to 4 minutes. Remove from the heat, stir in the tomato puree, sun dried tomato paste and water and season to taste with salt and pepper. Split the muffins and toast. Preheat the grill to high and spread the tomato sauce over the muffins. Sprinkle over the ham and sweetcorn and cover with the grated cheese. Preheat the grill to high. Cook the pizzas for 4 minutes until the cheese is bubbling and golden. Decorate with your favourite toppings. Allow to cool slightly before serving. Information Makes 2 mini pizzas

Cosmic Colin: Sneezy Alien Attack

The Case of the Feathered Mask by Holly Webb (Stripes £5.99)

Ed says:

by Tim Collins (Buster Books £4.99)

Ed says: ‘Colin is over the moon when he and his friend Harry set off for another adventure in Harry’s spaceship but he is not at all pleased that he has to take his little brother David with him. David is even more annoying than usual because he has a terrible cold. When they are confronted with aliens what will they do? Could David’s coughs and sneezes become an advantage for them? ‘This book in the hilarious Cosmic Colin series is very entertaining for young readers. They are sure to be enthralled by this super story with fantastic illustrations throughout.’

‘Maisie is totally fascinated by all the mysteries waiting to be solved around her in Victorian London. Professor Tobin has rooms in her grandmother’s house and Maisie enjoys hearing stories and looking at artefacts from his travels abroad. When the professor’s rare feathered mask is stolen, Maisie has to use all her powers of detection to solve this latest mystery. ‘Here is a great story that will appeal to newly confident readers who enjoy an exciting adventure. So get on the case with Maisie!’ FOR AGES 7 YEARS PLUS

The Quirks in Circus Quirkus by Erin Soderberg (Bloomsbury £5.99)

Ed says:

uncovering their secrets? ‘This is a crazy action-packed story with superb illustrations. The imaginative characters show how being different from others is cool!’

The Impossible Boy

by Mark Griffiths (Simon and Schuster £6.99)

Ed says: ‘Things are not always as they seem. Blue Hills appears to be like so many other towns but on closer inspection the impossible is happening. When a new boy starts to entertain his schoolmates with inexplicable magic tricks, Gabby and Barney – aka Geek Inc – set out to investigate. They soon realise that the weird and mysterious goings-on could threaten the whole world and they mean to find out the truth. ‘This is a fantastic page-turner that is sure to entertain boys and girls alike. Readers who enjoy a good mystery will wish they were members of Geek Inc to get in on the action.’

‘The Quirks are a very unusual family who bring a whole new meaning to the word quirky. Each has a unique magical power that they constantly try to hide as they really want to settle in their new town – Normal in Michigan. When the circus comes to town the children learn to juggle and fly on the trapeze. But however good their circus skills are, will they be able to keep their nosy neighbour from

The Anna Fiorentini Theatre & Film School for 4-18 years The North London branch of the Saturday Anna Fiorentini Theatre & Film School is currently taking applications for the next term and its forthcoming Taster Days. The school originally opened in Hackney in 2001 and now has over 250 students aged 7-18, many of whom have gone on to secure professional work on TV, Film and in theatre. Examples include Charlie Jones and Belinda Owusu, who played Ben Mitchell and Libby Fox in EastEnders and Tahj Miles who currently plays Simba in the West End’s The Lion King. As well as providing professional training, the aim of the school is to also provide a safe and supportive environment for

all children to explore their creativity regardless of what career path they eventually choose to follow. Every week students follow a timetable of drama/film, dance and singing under the guidance of top industry professionals. As well as weekly classes, students are given the opportunity to take part in Voice Idol, Drama and Stars in their Eyes competitions, culminating in a yearly Oscar Night. The school has recruited some excellent teaching staff including: Mike Burnside (actor in The Bill, Bergerac, the RSC), Mark Short (choreograhper to Tina Turner, Peter Andre, Liberty X), Michael Buffong (director of EastEnders, Holby City, Casualty and Coronation Street), Jacob Murray (former associate artisitc director of the Royal

How to burn kids’ energy The half-term holidays are approaching and, if your kids are anything like ours, after just an hour indoors they’ll be climbing the walls. But don’t despair! There are so many things to do, from play centres to sports clubs to creating your own fun, and many of them are free! Check out our guide to burning off some of your kids’ energy. • Why not try a new, fun activity? From cricket to tennis, football to drama, athletics to trampolining or even dry-slope skiing, there are hundreds around. Many clubs and classes offer free trials, why not try one, and then book an ongoing class? • Visit a museum. From the British Museum to the V&A, museums offer a huge range of activities, almost all of which are free. Museums don’t have to be quiet or sedentary activities – most of them run children’s workshops, some of which can be very energetic! Visit the Vikings at the British Museum, go for treasure hunts in the Geffrye Museum gardens, go on an

24

By Joanna Parry

expedition at the Horniman Museum, explore army life at the National Army Museum, and much, much more. • Don’t forget the park. Acres of room to run around in, trees to climb and most with children’s playgrounds. Best of all, they are free! • Or the lido… Often inexpensive, lidos can make a great day out when the weather is good. Many parks also have paddling pools too. • If the weather is not so great why not try an indoor swimming pool or go-karting or even ice skating? Indoor play centres can seem pricey, but if you get there early before they get busy and stay for most of the day, they can be great value for money • Make up your own games! It’s creative, you’ll have great fun with your kids, and it’s completely free. Organise a treasure hunt in the park, have a trampolining competition in the garden or set up an obstacle course, invite some friends over and give them a scavenger hunt to get stuck into. Go geocaching (similar to a treasure hunt, where you use a GPS to find a hidden treasure), divide your brood into two teams and start a water fight, fly a kite,

familiesnorth.co.uk

pitch a tent and fill the paddling pool, or run your own Sports Day • If it’s bucketing down there’s still plenty of fun to be had (and energy to be expended) indoors. Have a Games Day and challenge your kids to get through a number of board games or table tennis sessions in a day. Make dens or castles out of cardboard boxes, then decorate them. Have a disco – all you need is your best dancing queen outfit and an iPod. Treasure hunts can be just as fun indoors as out, or you can even get the kids running up and down the stairs if you’re really stuck! Make a movie or build a den or just put on the wellies and waterproofs and go splashing about in the rain The real trick to have peace, bizarrely, is to have MORE children at your place. They are more likely to engage in games and run around than if they are with you only!

Explore Learning opens new centre in Enfield (2nd May 2014) Explore Learning, the popular provider of English and maths tuition for kids has opened the doors of its new centre in Enfield. Situated on Crown Road, the centre will provide extra tuition to children aged five to 14 and will bring around 20 new jobs to the local area. Explore Learning has already proved hugely popular with parents in the area, running busy centres in nearby Barnet, Borehamwood, Edmonton and Palmers Green – to name a few. The Enfield Centre Director, Claire Cordukes says: ‘We’re very excited about opening our new centre in Enfield. The success of our other centres in the nearby areas shows just how keen parents are to provide their children with extra tuition to support their school work and confidence. The thing that parents love about Explore Learning is the fact that we’re open seven days a week and we operate on a dropin basis, so our tuition can easily fit around other hobbies and activities. Children get plenty of help and attention as our maximum ratio is one tutor to six children and our tutors are so enthusiastic. Our members really look forward to coming every week and the big thing for us though is that children have fun while learning.’ The centre will also be offering parents the option of specialist eleven plus tuition. This is

the latest addition to the network of tuition centres that first launched in 2001. With 91 centres nationwide, they have experienced huge growth in the past three years with more and more parents turning to extracurricular education to ensure their children not only get the education they need to progress through school, but also to encourage their love of learning. Explore Learning already have over 24,500 children who attend their existing centres nationwide. Standard membership at Explore Learning in Enfield is £119 per month for two sessions a week in English and maths – tailored to a child’s needs. Discounts are available to families eligible for Childcare Vouchers, Working Tax Credit or Income Support or have more than one child attending. Heather Garrick, Marketing Director at Explore Learning says: ‘Children of all abilities come to us for extra help in maths or English and we have a lively team of tutors who are so enthusiastic and really bring out the best in them.’ Recent independent research from the University of Reading into the effectiveness of Explore Learning found that a child’s improvement in maths was 30% higher than that of a child who doesn’t attend over a nine month period. Parents also said that children illustrated an increased interest in maths, while children whose parents were concerned that their English skills were falling behind before attending Explore Learning have shown a steady improvement and now fall in line with the national standard as a result of six months’ development. The new centre is located at Explore Learning, 3 Crown Road, Enfield, London, EN1 1TH. Parents interested in finding out more can contact 020 3713 9721 or email Enfield@ explorelearning.co.uk
