SPEED This, in the second of our series, focuses on speed and is aimed at children in years 5 and 6 including those studying towards the common entrance or 11+ examinations.

With outstanding Performing Arts tuition for 4 to 18 year olds, your very own movie screened at the cinema, free Trinity exams and our West End show - what are you waiting for? PQA Oxford are enrolling now for the Autumn term. Academies run on Saturdays To enrol your child and for further information please visit www.pqacademy.com or call us on 084567 32022

Speed is concerned with how far we can travel in a given time period. I may say that Jeff drove to work at 30 miles per hour: so we speak of speed in terms of distance and time. Speed is distance divided by time. Let us illustrate this with a few examples: Visit the amazing summer exhibition at the Ashmolean from 24 July. As it brings together objects, photographs, and archive material from leading collections to tell the story of the search for the tomb, the painstaking recording of its contents, and the research that continues to illuminate Tutankhamun and his world. On display are Harry Burton’s iconic photographs, Carter’s hand-written diaries, and the sketches and records made in the tomb as it was cleared from 1922–32. Much of this material from the Tutankhamun archive in the University of Oxford’s Griffith Institute, has never before been exhibited in public.

There’s lots going on at the Chiltern Open Air Museum in Bucks this summer for all the family, with an adventure playground, historic children’s games; dressing up as a Victorian; meet the animals, including the heavy horses Joshua and Samuel; explore the woodland walk and visit the bird hide or even make candles! Find out more at www.coam.org.uk. Just off the M25 at junction 7 the museum’s signposted from A413 at Chalfont St Peter and St Giles.

Grammar school shake-up

Over 50% of state grammar schools are planning serious changes to their admissions policies in order to attract pupils from more disadvantaged backgrounds, according to the Grammar School Heads Association. 30 of the country’s 164 selective schools have already agreed the move, with another 58 planning to do so shortly, following a report from education charity the Sutton Trust which said that grammar schools were being monopolised by students from wealthier homes. Michael Wilshaw, chief schools inspector, said they were ‘stuffed full’ of middle class children and so failed to improve social mobility. Under these new changes many grammar schools will reserve places specifically for pupils from poorer homes who pass the 11-plus. Barry Sindall, chief executive of the GSHA, added that the new admissions rules would not mean a reduction in the number of places for children from better off homes. These changes follow on from Schools Minister David Laws revealing that the Government is involved in talks with grammar school heads to make 11plus tests less ‘coachable’, to avoid middle class parents gaining an advantage through being able to afford private tutoring.

Top 20 activities to fill the holidays Ping! It’s time to unplug and reconnect with your family

1.

2.

Joanna Moorhead has some ideas on how to do it

Summer is a great time to enjoy being together with your nearest and dearest. But for many families these days, even together time is dominated by mobiles phones, iPads, TV and other devices. According to a recent survey, though, even kids themselves recognise the need to unplug and welcome the chance to ‘do something different’. Here are our top 20 ideas for what that ‘something different’ might be.

3.

9.

Play a board game: this sounds so simple you can’t quite believe I’m recommending it! But a game like Monopoly or Cluedo, which children can play from a young age or can play in teams, is a genuinely bonding experience. Put those mobile phones and other devices out of reach – yes, parents too – and concentrate on the game. And on one another. Build a den: whether you do this indoors or in the garden, or out in the woods or on the beach, you’ll have loads of fun. Joint tasks like making a den together bring out team-working skills and help you see one another’s hidden strengths. Once the den is built, do something wacky like having tea in it. Go fruit picking: not only will you have a good time picking your favourite fruits and discovering new ones, you’ll also be setting up your next family project which will be making jams and chutneys or just a massive fruit salad to see you through the next few days. Sleep under canvas: if you’re regular campers this one may be a bit too boring – but for families that haven’t camped before, even one night away can be a huge adventure. Alternatively, if you’ve a big enough garden and can borrow a tent from someone, just pitch it outside the back door on a warm evening and dig out your sleeping bags. Cook on a campfire: this is a perfect add-on to your camping adventure. Get advice online about how to build your fire and what foods are best to cook on it (sausages, haloumi cheese, peppers, burgers are all easy peasy). Go on a long bike ride: if you’ve all got your own bikes you probably do this all the time. If not, it can be a really fabulous and different day out to hire bikes and follow a cycle trail. Go wild swimming: swimming in a pond or lake, or in the sea, is a very different experience from an indoor pool. Children love it, and there are plenty of websites packed with ideas: but do check the one you’re heading for is family friendly. Reorganise your family photographs: these days, many families’ photographs remain in online galleries. They can be a great way of sharing pictures with relatives and friends – but there’s a huge amount of fun to be had from creating an old fashioned album together, when you relive past fun and remember what you enjoy most as a family. Borrow a dog for a weekend: if you have your own dog, this isn’t for you. But if you’re not a dog-owning family, having one on loan for a few days can be a hugely rewarding experience. See www.borrowmydoggy.com

10. Climb a big hill: this can be a mountain or a fairly small hill, depending on how old your children are. Enjoy helping one another to make the climb; your reward is the view from the top, and the picnic lunch you have up there!

11. Go fishing: you can do this with a net in the rock pools at the beach, or in a stream or river inland.

8

01993 815966 www.familiesoxfordshire.co.uk

12. Have a snail race: find some snails, and set up the course; place bets on which snail will win, and watch the action unfold.

13. Go star-gazing: find a place where the sky is open, ideally

away from too many artificial lights; do some research beforehand so you know what to look for, and when you get a clear evening, head off in search of the North Pole, Saturn and the Plough. Take a blanket with you so everyone can lie down and look up, which makes it more relaxing.

14. Hunt for treasure or bones: beaches can be great places for this, or look online to see if there are any ‘treasure troves’ near you).

15. Go geocaching: ok, so this is one activity you will need

your mobile phone for. But the high-tech treasure hunt is fascinating, and it pulls all members of the family in. Try it! More information at http://www.geocaching.com/.#

16. Switch roles in the kitchen: if you’re usually the meal-maker,

and the children are usually the table-setters, do things the other way round. Let the children plan, shop for and prepare the meal (depending on their ages, they may need some help) while you put together an excitingly-laid table. It’s always good in a family to do things a different way round…everyone learns, and there’s plenty of fun to be had.

17. Have a family talent show: this is a good one when you

have another family or relatives visiting. Everyone has to do a turn; no wriggling out allowed, however shy the mums and dads are. Allow time for rehearsing, and have one person double up as a compere. Reciting a poem, singing a song, doing a mime, dancing, playing an instrument… everyone has a talent to share.

18. Make a family journal or scrap book:

this can be a good project for a fixed amount of time, like a family holiday or a school holiday. Like a talent show, everyone needs to contribute something. Theme the book to the holiday you’re on or the season you’re in, and invite ideas on descriptions of where you are, reviews of local pubs or restaurants, accounts of days out or activities, book reviews or accounts of favourite ways to spend time together as a family. Writers can write, artists can draw. You’ll keep this book forever; it will be a snapshot of your family in a certain place, at a certain time.

19. Fly a kite: they’re cheap and easy to buy, or you can even

make your own. Read up on tips about how to fly them (www.thekitesociety.org); or if you’re really challenged and doubtful about your skills, seek out a master kiteflyer to help you learn (google kite flying lessons in your area). There’s nothing better than seeing your kite soar into the air, knowing you’ve pulled together as a family to make it happen.

20. Go birdwatching: you don’t need to know anything

about birds to enjoy watching them, but if you go to a birdwatching sanctuary or wetlands centre you’ll learn loads. Being in a shelter makes birdwatching more fun and should in theory mean you see more interesting birds. Take your binoculars, and get the children to draw pictures of the birds they see. Pregnancy discrimination The Equality Act 2010 protects women from unfavourable treatment because of pregnancy, pregnancy related illness or maternity leave but, according to campaigning organisation www.maternityaction. org.uk, 60,000 women lose their jobs because of pregnancy or maternity discrimination every year. Employers sometimes object to the number or timing of ante natal appointments but there is a right to paid leave: you should not be asked to make up the time or to rearrange appointments outside office hours. Absence policies should not be applied to women with pregnancy related illnesses unless this is to assist her. For example, an employer might refer her to Occupational Health to consider whether any adjustments might enable her to return to work. This does not stop women being disciplined or even dismissed because they have taken time off with pregnancy related illness. Even outright pregnancy discrimination is still common: employers’ attitudes towards women change once they announce their pregnancy, with an assumption that she is no longer committed to her work, won’t return after her maternity leave or will only want to work part time. Performance concerns are brought up or the role is said to be redundant. Women also experience problems when they try to return to work after maternity leave. They find their position has been filled and their services are no longer needed. Maternity leave must not play a part in any decision that a role is redundant. Any selection process should not take account of absences for maternity, ante natal appointments or pregnancy related illness. If a woman has been replaced during maternity leave, the role is not redundant and it is unlawful to dismiss. If the role is genuinely redundant, she has priority for any suitable alternative vacancies. I advise anyone experiencing discrimination to send an email setting out the problem so that there is written evidence of the first complaint. Get in touch with HR as well as speaking to your line manager, or manager’s manager if they are the problem. If that doesn’t work, raise a formal grievance. If you can’t reach a solution, it’s imperative to get legal advice as soon as possible. There is a 3 month time limit to bring Employment Tribunal claims for discrimination. If you wait, you may lose your right to bring a claim. Prolegal is a new breed of law firm that looks to challenge the conventional methods by which legal services are delivered. Their approach to legal services revolves around their belief that advice and assistance should be provided in an entrepreneurial, empowering and forthright manner. Chores for kids I don’t know about you but I do get in a pickle when it comes to giving my (adolescent 8 year old) jobs to do, partly because I tend to want to do everything myself. But giving your child regular chores can only be a positive thing; by making him or her appreciate all the nice things they generally get to do and not least to help them to realise that most things in life need to be worked for! Had I have read this when my daughter was much younger, I do wonder if it wouldn’t be quite such a ‘chore’ to get her to do things now, but we’re working on it! Here are a few pointers:

Where to start

Pre-schooler (ages 4-5)

clean microwave

Have a family plan for everyday household tasks and you will teach your kids a great life lesson. Chores help kids learn responsibility, and sharing chores gives you help around the house. Not sure your kids will go for it? Turn it into a game when they are young, a way to earn stars and later credits when they are older. (And since you ask, no, we don’t think children should get paid to help you around the house!)

Same as toddler plus

rake leaves

load the dishwasher

take out the recycling

lay the table

As the chores get more complex and timeconsuming, mix them up with simpler ones from the younger age groups so it doesn’t become too onerous

clear the table

wash dishes (with supervision)

Ages 9-11

wipe out bathroom sinks

Same as other ages plus

match socks. This can easily be turned into a fun game!

make simple meals

clean the loo (they’ll love this one!)

fold simple clothes or tea towels

mop floors

Toddler (ages 2-3)

water indoor plants

pick up/put away toys

feed pets

unload the dishwasher, especially cutlery, plastic cups and Tupperware

Same as other ages plus

dust (little ones love a feather duster!)

collect dirty clothes and put them in the hamper

Why not try rewarding younger children for doing their chores, at least when you first introduce them? For older children chores can become a normal part of their day.

help move clothes from washer to dryer

put clothes away

make their bed

wipe down cupboards, cabinets and skirting boards with soapy water. This one can get messy but it’s lots of fun!

At this age, it is more about ‘helping mum’ and having fun than chores!

01993 815966 www.familiesoxfordshire.co.uk

Ages 12-14 •

clean the bathroom

make full meals including a meal plan

clean out the fridge and freezer

Ages 6-8

mow the lawn

Same as other ages plus

supervise younger children’s chores – a great time to get bossy themselves!

help prepare meals, wash vegetables, simple cutting

wipe counter tops and kitchen units

hang up laundry

sweep

vacuum

fold clothes

Do take into account your own child’s maturity and capabilities when giving them chores. Some children may be able to tackle many more than others – and some will certainly complain more than others! Good luck! Oxfordshire

Turfing tips to get the perfect summer garden! As summer’s arrived most of us want to make the most of our outdoor space, especially for the children to play in. Laying turf is a common job for this time of year, so what better way to spruce up your lawn, by laying some brand new turf for the perfect children’s play area. It’s a straightforward job, and with the appropriate materials and aftercare you can achieve a healthy and soft lawn, by following these few simply steps:

12

01993 815966 www.familiesoxfordshire.co.uk

yy First, avoid laying turf in extended periods of hot weather yy It’s best to hire a turf cutter if you need to remove large areas of old turf. Most tool hire shops have them and they’ll make the job much easier. It’s possible to treat your existing lawn with weed killer, in order to remove unwanted grass you may have. This also stops weeds coming up through any new turf. This will need doing in advance yy It is important to prepare the ground you’re turfing in advance by laying a quality soil. This way it’s ready for as soon as the turf arrives yy Remember you can compost the old turf or grass, in order for it to be re-used somewhere else in your garden Go online to www.awbsltd.com for a great range of landscape products to include soils and quality Rolwan turf or visit an Awbs showroom located in Yarnton Nurseries, Begbroke or the Oxford Garden Centre, North Hinksey.
