Welcome from the
Editor I seem to suffer from seasonal amnesia - every winter I wonder how it can possibly be time to get out of bed when it’s still dark outside and I am positive that it wasn’t this cold last year. But once again we are past those two dreary, cold, broke months of the year and things are starting to look up! Spring, sun and most importantly, chocolate, are all on the horizon. We’ve compiled a five page guide to the Easter holidays with things to do locally, traveling tips and home recipes, plus seven whole pages of family events and Easter activities this spring. Happy Easter!
Best wishes,

Uniform scrapped for transgender pupils as Sussex school breaks the mould A school in Brighton has scrapped its normal uniform rules to accommodate transgender pupils. Brighton College has brought in a “trouser uniform” and a “skirt uniform” that can be worn by children of any gender. They say one pupil with gender dysphoria has taken up the option. The head teacher, Richard Cairns, revealed that the school had made changes to its 170 old school uniform rules to help a small number of families. “It ties in with my strong personal belief that youngsters should be respected for who they are,” he said.

Saying Goodbye service at Portsmouth Cathedral Families from Portsmouth and the Solent who have suffered the pain of baby loss at any stage of pregnancy, birth or in infancy are invited to join a special service on Saturday 9th April at 11am at Portsmouth Cathedral.
They provide an extensive programme of scholarships and means-tested bursaries for the Senior School which make it possible for a growing number of pupils to join PGS each year regardless of their financial situation.
The International ‘Saying Goodbye’ services help families pay tribute to their lost babies and provide an opportunity for people to say goodbye and are the first set of national commemorative services to take place in Cathedrals and Minsters across the UK. This is one of over 24 International services this year and the third time the service has come to Portsmouth. The service in Portsmouth will feature contemporary music, as well as poetry and readings, mixed with acts of remembrance and time for reflection. The service is free to attend and open to anyone of any faith or no faith. It is hoped that people from across Hampshire, the Solent and beyond will take the time to come to what has always been a beautiful and deeply moving service.

Brookham Burns Day Ceilidh In January the Year 3 children at Brookham School, Liphook aptly held their very own Burns Day Ceilidh in the school theatre. The children have been learning Scottish Ceilidh Dancing in their PE lessons as part of the aesthetic block of the curriculum.
Challenges arose in the first couple of lessons as the thought of holding hands with the opposite sex was not appealing to many and Rugby shirt sleeves were seen quickly covering hands!

The children soon got over these issues as they learnt to count out the different beats; learned the difference between a reel and a waltz and experienced the complications of dancing a figure of eight! Patience and understanding between couples and reeling groups grew and the lessons were thoroughly enjoyed. By the day of the Ceilidh the children were very eager to show off their new moves to all the parents and grandparents who had come to watch. Boost your child’s literacy and numeracy by Liat Hughes Joshi Literacy and numeracy are central to your child’s learning in primary school and will underpin many of the subjects they’ll cover during their secondary education. They are of course crucial to later life too. Whether they’re already acing their algebra or still struggling with basic sums, here are some ideas on how to give these key skills a boost.
A little extra learning at home can work wonders…but don’t go overboard! In busy classrooms of 30 pupils, teachers understandably can struggle to provide one-on-one attention. By working on specific areas with your child, you can make a huge difference. Keep it sensible– even ten or fifteen minutes a day can have an impact yet still leaves hours for playing.

Reading and numeracy are both typically taught quite differently to when most of us were children, so it’s certainly worth finding out how their school does things to avoid confusing your child.
Employ tech to your advantage There are some brilliant educational apps and websites with masses of kid appeal. Try to find ones which align with the National Curriculum or at least use British English.
Encourage reading Reading opens the door to almost endless learning and enjoyment. Some children are naturally enthused by books, others need nudging to get the reading bug. At first encourage any reading at all – comics, magazines, the cereal packet – without worrying much about what they are reading. Home in on your child’s interests and give them books relating to these.

Incorporate ‘stealth learning’ into everyday activities Sneak maths and literacy into day-today life and you can improve skills without it feeling like schoolwork. Adding up the cost of the shopping, dividing the restaurant bill, playing snakes and ladders, or writing a postcard to the grandparents can all help. Liat Hughes Joshi is a parenting journalist and the author of four books including 'New Oldfashioned Parenting' and 'How to Unplug Your Child' (both published by Summersdale) and Raising Children: The Primary Years (Pearson).
The Ultimate Homework Guide By Liat Hughes Joshi
Like it or not, homework is a necessary part of school life. However, it does bring benefits: helping you see what your children have been doing in class, understanding their strengths and weaknesses and reinforcing learning. So how can you make homework run as smoothly as possible and avoid it becoming a chore for the whole family?
Incorporate homework into a routine Many children benefit from having a set homework time they’re somewhat less likely to push back if it is just what happens at 5pm. However you might both prefer homework to be completed at the earliest opportunity so they can go off and relax, or favour a spell of winding down after school – simply see what works for your child. If, like many primary schoolers, they only get one or two pieces of homework a week, it might be best to tackle it at the weekend when they’re not tired from school.
Help, yes, but don’t do it for them! “Full Marks for Pastoral Care” Good Schools Guide
“A First-Rate Education” ISI 2014
As a parent your key role is to ensure that your child has somewhere comfortable and quiet to do their homework and the items required, e.g. a dictionary or ruler. You may also need to clarify what a question means or provide support if they’re stuck. But do remember it’s their homework not yours – if you’re having to do it all for them on a regular basis, it may be too difficult - discuss this with their teacher.
How much is too much? Most primary age children will get 30 to 60 minutes a week plus reading and perhaps spellings and times tables. If you think your child is being set too much homework, again, it’s definitely worth having a chat with their teacher. Additionally, if it’s taking what you feel is an inappropriate amount of time on a particular day, don’t be afraid to stop and write him or her a note along the lines of ‘X spent an hour doing this and we felt it was enough’.

This will finish with the aftermath of the ferocious Battle of Trafalgar, where Nelson breathed his last breath. The new visitor route through Victory will provide access to areas never available to the visiting public before. Visitors will be able to see more of Victory than ever before, and what they do see will be more accurate than at any point in the past century.

Flip Out
Unit 4 Harbourgate Portsmouth, PO6 4BQ 0845 4509 554
Mini Flippers Parent and child (under 5) bounce for £10. Extra child £5 9am -3pm week days
The South Coasts first Trampoline arena Flip Out is now open! With wall to wall trampolines and a dedicated children’s arena and a large foam pit area, the children can spend an hour bouncing away their energy! They also hold Little Ninja classes as well as Flip Fit classes (for over 15’s) Where you will use gymnastics, Trampoline and Parkour disciplines to give you an all-round work out. Free car park and cafe with Wi-Fi and viewing deck.
Travelling long distances with kids can be tricky. They get bored, they need entertaining, they argue and they think even a short journey is the longest ever! If you are going away for an Easter break here are some ways to get there without going grey in the process.
Create a magical destination If the children know where you’re going and what they’ll find when you get there, they can be more enthusiastic about the journey. Find out facts about your destination, make them a booklet they can fill in with things they spot and have a ‘prize’ when they get there for being good.
Check List
Change of clothing sick bags, toilet roll, colouring books and pencils, sticker books, games, pillows, blankets and a mini first aid kit.
Pack Snacks
Kids get bored if energy levels drop, so pack snacks they can nibble on along the way; rice cakes, crackers, crisps and mini sandwiches are ideal. However, let the front passenger control these so they don’t eat them all at once. Always save sweet treats until last and make sure drinks are in spill-proof cups.
Play Games
Play the spotting game. The kids win points for every animal they notice - on pub signs, shops, etc. - and the winner gets to pick what you spot next. If you’re feeling really generous, you could offer a small prize.
Play Music or Films
Whilst you might restrict the use of tablets at home, this is when they are worth their weight in gold. Give each child their favourite film, and of course headphones. If you only have one tablet, you can buy an inexpensive converter for two sets of headphones. If they are getting really stir crazy, classical music can calm them. Try Mozart clarinet and string concertos, ballet music, Radio 3 or Classic FM.
Know where you’re going
Make sure you have directions to where you’re going or invest in a Satnav. If you don’t have one, you can use a map package on your smartphone, or alternatively get a helping hand from the AA (aa.com). Sally J. Hall is a writer and editor who has written for all the main parenting titles as well as The Independent and The Mail.
