Help your child grow confidence One of the most important skills children can master is selfconfidence: it will help them build friendships, perform well in school and resist negative peer pressure. But while some youngsters are blessed with a natural ability to run headlong into new activities others need a little help. According to the team at performing arts school Stagecoach Havant, performing arts can give even the shyest wallflower confidence. “It’s not only about training children to perform on stage, it’s about helping them to perform better in life,” said Juli Richards, Principal at the stage school. For more information on Stagecoach Havant’s classes, go to www.stagecoach.co.uk/havant
Benefits of baby massage by Jo Lamb Baby massage is a great way for parents to connect with their baby using the power of positive touch. By using light rhythmic strokes, parents are stimulating the production of the hormone oxytocin, also known as the hormone of love, which aids bonding, reduces stress and helps a baby feel calm, connected and secure.
Baby Massage
with Jo Lamb
Learning massage technique can increase a parent’s confidence in handling and caring for their baby and can help them to respond to their baby’s cues, understand their needs and enable better communication between a parent and baby. This creates positive interactions and it is these positive interactions that can help parents to feel empowered and increase their own sense of well-being. If you are interested in baby massage, I currently run courses in Emsworth, Westbourne and Chidham, for more information please contact me at babymassage.jolamb@gmail.com or visit my facebook page www.facebook.com/babymassagewithjolamb * Baby Massage with Jo Lamb are small friendly classes offering quality time for you & your baby to connect, as well as the opportunity to meet other parents. Families Solent East speaks to Claire Gask from Emsworth Therapy Services about the mental health challenges parents face.... "Becoming a parent is hard. It’s not just the lack of time, constant string of chores but it’s the impact that having children has on you. You might constantly think you are failing. Failing to earn enough, failing because you put them in childcare whilst you work, failing because you were irritable.. again… or perhaps you worry about everything and everyone. The constant what ifs. These might have been present before you had children and they have grown and grown and grown or perhaps this is all new and unnerving. Working as a cognitive behavioural therapist for Emsworth Therapy Services, I help those struggling with a range of mental health disorders. Often, parents have come to me for mental health support when things have become unmanageable. A person might state that they are no longer sleeping or waking up through the night worrying; the what ifs. Or they are feeling low, numb and are able to do what they have to for their family, they are no longer getting satisfaction or excitement from day to day living. When the situation becomes unmanageable, it’s hard to know how to get out of it. It becomes a vicious cycle. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) has been found to be helpful in helping people with their difficulties. CBT first helps someone to understand how the problem evolved. If we understand how something has grown and become problematic then it is more manageable and less of a ‘mess’. At Emsworth Therapy Services I look to understand how the problem is ongoing and what we can do differently. Perhaps take distance from our thoughts, as we tend to completely believe all of our thoughts and, as a result, emotionally respond to them, impacting our 6 F amilies Solent East
actions. We don’t often question our thoughts. Why is this? Just because we have a thought doesn’t meant we have to take it as fact. CBT can help to question these thoughts and challenge them if needed; affecting our response both emotionally and behaviourally. It might be looking at questioning whether some of our actions are helpful or unhelpful. We so often get stuck in habitual patterns. Do you find yourself not getting out the car at school pick up/drop off? You might not know why you get a physical feeling of anxiety at the thought of standing in the playground, but you don’t like the physical feeling so don’t go to the playground. But it’s becoming a problem, you are feeling isolated, your kids want to play in the playground for a bit longer but you can’t stay in the car where you pick them up whilst you wait for them to finish playing. CBT can help you to understand what thought is underlying this behaviour and look to help you challenge this." Therapy can be a safe, non-judgmental environment to make these changes. You can access CBT through the NHS or privately (self-funding or medical insurance if insured) by visiting www.emsworththerapyservices.co.uk or contacting claire@emsworththerapyservices.co.uk. Claire Gask is a cognitive behavioural therapist who splits her time between her private practice and working for a private healthcare organisation. Claire has worked in healthcare for approx. 12 years and is passionate about not only helping those with mental health difficulties but also helping to prevent difficulties. familiesonline.co.uk
The Midnight Gang at Chichester Festival Theatre This inventive tale of fun, friendship and the importance of kindness is adapted from David Walliams’s biggest-selling children’s book. A bang on the head during a cricket match has landed twelve-year-old Tom in the children’s ward of the spooky Lord Funt Hospital. Luckily, he’s not on his own with the child-hating Matron and the scary-looking Porter. George, Amber, Robin and Sally are in there too, and they’re not taking things lying down. When the lights go out and the clock strikes twelve, they’re off. But will they let Tom join their forbidden midnight adventures through the hospital’s labyrinthine realm? Take part in your own midnight adventure through a range of family friendly events, holiday activities and workshops. Find out more at cft.org.uk or call 01243 781312. 13 October - 3 November 2018

Football birthday parties with Little Kickers
e h t s e i t r a p t Perfeccloud way! party Planning a children's party and don't know where to start? You need partycloud! Families Solent East met up with the brains behind this fantastic new venture, local mums Sally and Amy to talk about their new online directory, and Prosecco..! Tell me a little bit about yourselves.... We both have two children of the same age and live in Clanfield and Denmead. After many years of being very career driven, Sally as Commercial Manager at Marks and Spencer and me as Senior Relationship Manager at Paragon Bank, being new Mums totally changed our focus and we quickly realised we needed a proper work life balance. We met at an NCT class when we were first pregnant. Sally saw me in my pink heels at 30 weeks pregnant and knew immediately we would hit it off. Since then we have experienced all the highs and lows of parenthood together. How did the idea for partycloud come about? We always knew we would work well together and the idea came about when we were planning our little ones parties and realised that a site which had everything party related in one place would be a great help. So that’s what we did! What can our readers expect to find when they visit your website? Partycloud has a really fresh look that is appealing to everyone and so easy to use. On partycloud you will find lots of local talented suppliers who may not come up in your normal internet search as well as bigger companies which will give parents inspiration for their kid’s parties. What makes a great party? Prosecco! But if you’re talking about children’s parties, then instead of copying a party you have attended, be the trend setter. At partycloud we are proud to have so many suppliers with unique offerings.
You can check out partycloud at www.partycloud.co.uk Partycloud's Top Party Tips! * We love a cup cake tower which can save on time and mess. Why not personalise each cake with the child’s name which makes it fun for the kids to choose their own and easy to put in a party bag. * Don’t bring the party food out too late as kids can often be pre-occupied by a beautifully laid table and eating a bit earlier means they can focus on the entertainment. * Make your party bags stand out and be remembered as this is the last impression of the party. See our party bags blog at www.partycloud. co.uk/articles for more hints and tips.

Mermaid Party There are many ways to incorporate a mermaid into a party, why not hire a swimming pool venue and watch the mermaids come to life, or hire 'on land' mermaid entertainers to come to your venue of choice to sing songs and tell mysterious tales. Use colour schemes of blues, greens, purples and pinks...
Where Learning’s a Ball
Chocolate Party A chocolate party is the perfect way for children to combine the two things they love the most, making lots of mess and eating the results! If you are looking for something a bit different for your child then this is a great way to learn about how chocolate is made while they gather round a chocolate fountain creating their own masterpieces to take home. Teddy Bear's Picnic If you go down to the woods today...! Find the perfect location for your delicious picnic, grab some large blankets and set out a party tea fit for hungry bears! Find some old teddies from the toy box and scatter them around – maybe have them peeking out from behind a tree! Hang bunting and use a bubble machine to create some magic. For an extra special touch, use some chalk on a near-by path to draw some teddy bear footprints guiding the children to their secret spot. Superheroes Party Fun for boys and girls, don’t forget to put 'fancy dress' on the invite and watch the comic books come to life. This is a great chance for kids to come as their favourite character while enjoying games in a village hall or using up all their energy on a bouncy castle fit for the Hulk! Create a bold colour scheme for the table, with plenty of WOW and POWs written across the plates and cups. Unicorn Party Creating a unicorn inspired party can be very simple. Why not gather some pastel coloured balloons into a rainbow shape to hang over a table or entrance to give the party a really magical feel? Iridescent table ware is always a winner with little girls who love the shimmer and shine and why not add a unicorn piñata to really get the party started! Pink and blue donuts with magic sprinkles, multi coloured sponges and lollipop cakes create a dream setting for any birthday party. See the full article at www. partycloud.co.uk/partythemes.

Education and Early Years New Times Table Test for Year 4 Pupils The government has announced plans to have all Year 4 pupils sit a compulsory times table test. It will be tried out in a sample of schools with the test being made available on a voluntary basis to all schools across England from June 2019. It will become mandatory in June 2020. The test has been described by the Government as a 5 minute “on-screen check” which is designed to help ensure children know the multiplication tables up to 12 off by heart and has been designed to avoid causing additional stress for children and teachers. The Government has also said results from the check will not be published at school-level, and will not be used by Ofsted and others to force changes in schools. Some teachers’ unions have expressed strong concerns about the introduction of another test being an unnecessary additional burden on schools.

Where girls do better
Come and see the difference…
By Paul Marshallsay Headmaster, Portsmouth High Prep and Pre-School It is my great pleasure to welcome you to Portsmouth High Prep School where intellectual curiosity is developed and girls enjoy learning through opportunities inside and outside the classroom. Teachers use their considerable expertise to enable girls to become explorers in their learning using thinking skills that apply across the curriculum and beyond into sport, music and drama. Close connections with our Senior School mean girls can take advantage, not just of specialist teachers, but also of excellent facilities including an impressive sports hall and food technology centre. We are fortunate also to have outstanding grounds at our disposal. An oasis in the heart of the city, the Prep School has tennis courts, a games area, play equipment, an outdoor learning classroom as well as vegetable and flower gardens. The family atmosphere promotes exceptional pastoral care alongside high level academic performance. Girls here are confident, composed, committed and courageous. Quite simply, this is a school where girls do better.
