Celebrate Play on Playday UK! Playday is the national day for play in the UK and will take place this year on Wednesday 1 August. Playday is an annual celebration of children's play with thousands of children and families playing outside at events across the UK. It is an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of children's play and the need for quality play opportunities every day of the year. From small-scale community events to thousands of children taking part in events organised in parks and open spaces – Playday is celebrated by each community in a way that suits them. As well as a celebration of children’s right to play, Playday is a campaign that highlights the importance of play in children’s lives.

Choosing the Music for ABRSM Piano Exams Are your children taking ABRSM Piano exams? Have you ever wondered who decides which pieces appear in the syllabus? At ABRSM, the Learning & Qualifications team is dedicated to creating syllabuses packed with wonderful music to learn and play. This team reviews syllabuses on an ongoing basis, asking for feedback, looking at what’s worked well before and keeping abreast of developments in music education. ABRSM issues a fully-refreshed Piano syllabus every two years and creating new lists of pieces takes anything from two years upwards. A panel of expert consultants helps with this vital work. The views of teachers and pupils are also really important. As a result of recent feedback, ABRSM has paid particular attention to the pieces set for Grades 1 to 3 to ensure they are accessible and enjoyable for younger learners. Earlier this year it also held its first ever Piano Party, where young pianists tried out pieces for future syllabuses. Whatever the grade, we offer a broad range of music for teachers and candidates to choose from. It’s all about providing pieces to motivate, encourage and inspire. Find out more about ABRSM Piano exams at www.abrsm.org/piano

Explore, Discover & Learn at Ryde School

Education News

Ryde School is the independent day and boarding school on the Isle of Wight for boys and girls aged 2 1/2 to 18. Beach and Forest School sessions have long been a part of the Junior School. Alongside the vibrant academic curriculum, children spend time immersed in nature, learning skills invaluable to their wider development, broadening their learning through discovery; building confidence and fostering their natural desire to learn and explore. Inter-schools maths challenges, explosive science sessions in the Senior and the Junior School Science Labs and fun, educational residential trips like a night in a museum or a trip to Salamanca help children ignite their passion for learning. Linda Dennis, Head of the Junior School at Ryde, firmly believes that this igniting of children's excitement in learning is the way to ensure pupils and their teachers discover the pupils’ talents, enabling them to grow and enhance those talents, ready for Senior School and the wider world. Team sports matches against other schools, on and off the Island and sailing competitions in the School’s own fleet of dinghies also embed the team spirit and healthy competition that are part of the Ryde School ethos. Our next open morning is on Saturday 6 October 10.00am until 12.30pm. Come and join us for interesting activities, a tour of the school and a complimentary family lunch. Families Top Tips for Teaching Your Child to Ride a Bike Summer is a great time to teach your child to ride their bike. Here are a few tips: * Teach in Short Sessions: Do not overtire your children or they may be put off - 30 minutes at a time is enough. Finish the session on a high, even if they haven’t managed to pedal unaided, and stop when boredom or frustration set in. . * Location: It is best to use a hard, level surface, rather than grass. Ideally, choose somewhere with a gentle slope. Make sure the location is traffic-free but keep an eye out for pedestrians, animals and parked vehicles. * Bike Setup: Check the rider’s clothing is appropriate and the helmet fits correctly with the straps not too loose or too tight. It should be seated over the front of the rider’s head. * Braking: The best way for children to grasp the concept of braking is for them to walk alongside the bike with their hands in position and attempt to use the brakes in this way. * Balance: Use a balance bike or take the pedals and stabilisers off a normal bike. Stabilisers are not recommended when children are learning to ride as they will learn the wrong weight distribution and arm movements for turning. Make sure the rider can reach the brake levers and can put their feet comfortably on the ground when seated on the saddle. Lower the saddle if necessary to the lowest setting. * Scooting: Ask the rider to let go of the brakes and start scooting. They should use the bike like a hobby horse and push along the ground using their feet. * Supporting: Whilst they are learning to pedal you may need to support them. Hold them gently under the arms or by gently holding the middle section of the back of your child's top. * Time to let go: Many children may not realise they are riding without help and will be amazed when they stop and turn round to see you are now some distance away. Congratulate them on their achievement and pause for a breather! For more information, visit www.cycling.org familiesonline.co.uk

Help your child grow confidence One of the most important skills children can master is self-confidence: it will help them build friendships, perform well in school and resist negative peer pressure. But while some youngsters are blessed with a natural ability to run headlong into new activities others need a little help. According to the team at performing arts school Stagecoach Havant, performing arts can give even the shyest wallflower confidence. “It’s not only about training children to perform on stage, it’s about helping them to perform better in life,” said Juli Richards, Principal at the stage school. For more information on Stagecoach Havant’s classes, go to www.stagecoach.co.uk/havant

The Challenge is a fun way to encourage children aged 4 to 11 years to read six library books during the summer holidays. Last year 26,000 children took part in the Challenge at Hampshire libraries, boosting their reading skills and confidence. It’s one way to avoid a summertime ‘dip’ in literacy skills which can happen to primary school children during the six week break. The Summer Reading Challenge 2018 is called Mischief Makers, inspired by the much-loved iconic children's title Beano, which celebrates its 80th anniversary. Children will explore a map of Beanotown to find the mysterious buried treasure and become ultimate mischief makers! Dennis, Gnasher and friends will help them solve clues and collect stickers, having lots of fun and adventures along the way. You can sign up at your local Hampshire library from 14 July, then read six library books of your choice to complete the Challenge. There are exclusive rewards to collect along the way, a free prize draw and there’s no charge to take part. For more information visit
