Clubs and Classes Survive Summer Holidays with Quiet Time Once a Day Everyone needs some quiet time, mums, dads, carers and children. Time when there is no rush, not too much noise, and rest. Over the holidays, parents can sometimes feel they need to entertain their children all the time. This can mean lots of clubs, activities, play dates, screen time, and running from A to B. However, in order to avoid everybody getting over-tired, hot and irritable, quiet time at least once a day is required. Here are some tips on how you can achieve this: Keep it Quiet It sounds obvious but background noise can be stressful and distracting. The radio, TV, washing machine and traffic noise can build up quite the din. Turn off what you can. Preparation To make the most of the quiet time, do some preparation for it. This could take ten minutes or half an hour, but quickly wash up, put cushions back on sofas, and put phones away. This is time for all of you to relax. Be Ready with Activities Have a list of activities ready for quiet time. Books, drawing and colouring in are all lovely peaceful activities that allow our minds to rest. Consider Timings Quiet time is best introduced when things get a bit much at home. This can often occur when you come in from the shops, or after a long time in the car. When tears are shed, it’s time to rally the troops for some time out. Adult Rest Remember you as a parent need to sit down too, so put your magazines, books or work aside for this time. Sit with your children and enjoy the peace yourself. Remember they will learn self-care from you. Take a moment... If we look for them, there are moments of quiet we can enjoy in the day, even when life is buzzing around us. Sometimes it’s a sit in the park or even some soothing music in the car. Moments of peace throughout the day can be a great way to regulate the mind and relax. More information at www.fegans.org.uk/parent-hub
Learn new skills, make new friends and burn off energy spending time outdoors. Suitable for ages 5 - 13, both advanced and beginners catered for. Visit www.pedal2pedal.co.uk for dates or contact Hannah on 07984367888
Our beautiful part of the UK has become the home of a cycling club with a difference! Based in Petersfield covering Hampshire, Surrey and West Sussex, Pedal 2 Pedal caters for cyclists of all ages and abilities, especially those who share a passion for exploring off-road trails and getting muddy! Pedal 2 Pedal was established by cross country mountain bike racer and British Cycling coach Hannah Attenburrow. Pedal 2 Pedal offers a mixture of; • Junior cycling courses aimed to get kids riding safely and confidently, • Support getting children from stabilisers to independent cyclists, • Junior Mountain Bike Academy, the only one of its kind in the South East of England, • Women's coaching weekends, • Family coaching sessions, Hannah says; "I decided to start coaching because I wanted to help inspire more people to try mountain biking. Cycling is a fantastic sport as it improves your health, fitness, and can be used to get you from A to B. The best thing is you can go to some stunning parts of the country which you can’t reach by car and that take a long time to reach by foot. The joy of mountain biking to me is being out in the countryside having a great adventure." Why not come and join us! For children who are interested in riding off-road, Pedal 2 Pedal offers mountain bike camps for riders aged 5 to 14. These aim to develop mountain bike techniques, like riding on uneven surfaces, cornering, braking effectively and dealing with obstacles. This course is suitable for young riders who have already got a little experience riding off-road on tracks, forest paths and fields. Courses are running at the end of July and August. Pete, whose son attended a camp at Easter said; "My 8 year old son loved his 2 camps. He had so much fun and learnt a lot new things. He is now even more confident on the trails. Thank you Hannah." The Pedal 2 Pedal Academy is built around a passion for mountain biking and getting outdoors. It inspires and enhances performance through playing games, developing trail skills, race etiquette and team work. The Academy caters for all levels of rider aged 5 – 14, who want to join a progressive British Cycling affiliated club with a fun atmosphere where the emphasis is on team spirit and challenging your ability. Club nights are every Monday and Tuesday during term time with added holiday programs for riders who wish to stay active during the holidays. For those with a competitive edge, the Pedal 2 Pedal race team is open to all ages and abilities whether you’re into marathons, cross country, enduro or sportives, come and train with us. Pedal 2 Pedal is a British Cycling, affiliated club and race team. Members of Pedal 2 Pedal will benefit from British Cycling membership discounts, as well as discounted Birthday Parties, Holiday Camps and sibling discounts. Clubs and Classes: Planning Ahead Pays By Andrew Campbell The summer holidays may seem long but they will soon be over. So it’s not too early to start thinking about what after school classes, clubs and weekend activities you may want to book for your child in September.
Stagecoach Performing Arts is the trading name of Stagecoach Theatre Arts Limited. Stagecoach Theatre Arts schools are operated under franchise and are independently owned by their Principals. Stagecoach and Creative Courage For Life are registered trademarks of Stagecoach Theatre Arts Limited.
Why 'Creative Courage For Life' Is So Important Every child has potential but the potential is nothing unless it is realised. It is important to teach children to unleash their potential and find their way on the stage of life. Parents want their child to grow up being a confident, well-rounded individual so that they can go on to accomplish their dreams. This is something that most feel is lacking from today's education as schools divest from the arts. At Stagecoach Performing Arts we teach those life skills through the powerful medium of the performing arts. We call this brilliant education Creative Courage For Life.
www.stagecoach.co.uk/havant Summer swimming fun at award-winning Rusalka Rusalka offers a great start in swimming tuition for your baby and toddler. We first opened our swim school in 2005 and it now operates, six days a week, with free adjacent on site parking. Both pools are equipped with state of the art automatic heating/commercial filtration systems which maintain the water temperature at 31C and the air temperature at 32C at all times. In the past fourteen years we have taught thousands of babies and children to swim, picking up several national awards along the way, including Best UK Swimming Teacher and ASA Centre of Excellence status.
This is particularly important if you have a child who wants to undertake a number of activities or classes, or if you have multiple children. It’s essential to work out a schedule whereby all the activities fit together neatly and you are not left rushing from place to place with too little time to spare.
"Planning ahead gives you time to research all the options thoroughly." Planning ahead gives you time to research all the options thoroughly, talk to providers and book into free trials and taster classes that are scheduled early in September, before the term gets into full swing. Testing out your child’s interest in a new activity by taking advantage of free trials and taster classes is definitely recommended if you want to avoid a situation where you pay for an activity in which your child swiftly loses interest. Without prior planning, it’s easy to find yourself scrabbling around in a hurry at exactly the time when you are also preparing for your child to go back to school. There’s the chance you’ll miss out on something suitable too, as popular classes fill up quickly. It’s also easier to get a session time that suits your family’s schedule if you are ready to book early, as well as being able to avoid travelling further to get exactly what you want. If you want to book your child into an activity with friends, there’s likely to be some co-ordination involved with their parents, so pre-planning is beneficial. Last but not least, you may find you can save money by taking advantage of ‘early bird’ booking discounts offered by many activity providers.
Rusalka takes babies from 3 months old and has always operated with small classes where there are never more than 5 children in the pool at any one time. During the 2019 school summer holidays, we will be running three separate, week long, Intensive Swimming courses, these will be taking place during w/c 22nd July, 29th July and w/c 12th August Please see our website ‘News’ page for details. Find out more by calling Rusalka on 02392 594449, or visiting the website at www.rusalkaswim.com familiesonline.co.uk

Host a Teddy Bears’ Picnic This is sure to be a hit with younger children, especially if they can invite some friends from nursery. Use a teddy cookie cutter to make some little bear-shaped sandwiches. Cut out some pictures of bears and hide them in the surrounding area for kids to find (just remember to take them home with you when you leave). There are lots of fun picnic ideas at www.woodlandtrust.org.uk
Free and fun activities in nature this summer The summer holidays are starting and Families magazine asked the Woodland Trust for its top pick of holiday adventures to get children active outdoors and away from their screens!
Create a Fairy Garden Use your imagination to design a fantastic fairy garden! You can do this indoors if it’s raining. You will need: A container, such as a plastic box or old washing up bowl Earth and a collection of natural materials: small stones or pebbles, sticks, moss, leaves, and perhaps some small flowering plants. Fill your container with earth (if you’re using living plants, put some stones in the bottom for drainage). Use some leafy twigs to make trees. Build a fence or little seat with sticks. You could even make a pond by sinking a plastic cup or another small container into the earth and filling it with water. You’re bound to think of lots more ideas once you get started…
Embark upon a Woodland Challenge Set up challenges to complete on a day out in the woods and have a competition with your family and friends. Remember to decide how many points each challenge is worth. Here are some challenge ideas: - Climb a tree (make sure there’s an adult around though!) - Balance on a fallen tree trunk and walk along - Find three types of flower - Cross a stream without getting your feet wet - Identify three different tree species
Learn to Skim Stones You can do this on a pond, river, or calm sea. Just be careful not to get too near the water’s edge or make sure you don’t hit any ducks – or swimmers! - Find some round, flat, smooth stones - Hold a stone flat between your thumb and forefinger - Get down low and throw it across the water with a spinning action. Do persevere as it might take a bit of practice.
Try a Barefoot Walk Let the grass tickle your toes, splash through a stream, and stomp in some squidgy mud. Did you know you have over 7,000 nerve endings in each foot, so walking barefoot is a great way to get in touch with nature? Just make sure you avoid anything sharp on the ground. Some parks and attractions have special barefoot trails, so search online for one near you. You could even try setting up a barefoot walk in your back garden.
Go on a Butterfly Hunt Summer brings with it throngs of colourful butterflies. You will find a downloadable butterfly caterpillars ID sheet at www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/naturedetectives/ which you can use to hunt fluttery butterflies in woodland clearings. If it’s too wet to go outside, why not cheer yourself up with a gorgeous butterfly mobile instead? You will need: - several sticks of similar length - string or wire - paper – coloured, patterned, or white if you want to colour the butterflies yourself - colouring pens, glitter (optional) - a needle and some strong thread Cross the sticks over in the middle and fasten them with string or wire to make the frame. Fold a piece of paper in two and draw half a butterfly along the folded edge. Cut around it and open it out. Repeat for lots more butterflies. Decorate them if you wish. Attach a thread to each butterfly using the needle and tie the other end to a stick. Hang up your mobile and admire your cloud of colourful butterflies!
Find some wild animal evidence – tracks, a fox or rabbit hole, some fur caught on a bush, or even some poo!
The Woodland Trust charity runs its Nature Detectives family offering with lots of ideas to get busy and out in nature. You can post pictures on Twitter or Instagram using #NatureDetectives too or visit www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/naturedetectives/ for more activity ideas.
Tip: you can use the downloadable summer flowers ID sheet at www. woodlandtrust.org.uk/naturedetectives/ for this challenge

10% off party bookings if you mention Families Solent. Tooth decay is the most common disease of childhood with a child in England having a rotten tooth removed in hospital every 10 minutes and it being the most common reason for hospital admissions in 5 to 9 year olds. Despite these statistics, tooth decay is preventable through simple everyday measures, such as: • Brushing your teeth for two minutes twice a day • When you've finished brushing, spit the toothpaste out but don’t rinse with water so that the toothpaste can keep on protecting your teeth • Between meal-times, stick to sugar-free snacks (like toast, crackers and rice-cakes) or fresh fruit (like apples, bananas and pears) and drink water, milk or sugar-free juice as foods and drinks with added sugar can cause tooth decay. Portsmouth City Council and the University of Portsmouth Dental Academy have worked with families in the city to develop an animated film encouraging young children to look after their teeth. Set in the town of Toothville; Timmy Toothbrush and Tracey Toothpaste save teeth ‘Isaac’, ‘Chloe’, ‘Mo’ and ‘Meg’ from Peter Plaque by showing us what we need to do to keep our teeth clean and healthy. Summer holiday camps and courses guide By Andrew Campbell The long summer holiday break is a great opportunity for children to take part in organised activities, play schemes, workshops or day camps either within their local area on a daily or weekly basis or, increasingly, attend an American-style residential summer Camp. Here’s our guide to some of the options available: Residential Camps These are independent holidays for unaccompanied children aged from 7 years and above. Children are supervised round the clock in a secure residential environment such as a boarding school. Group leaders usually take care of children’s pastoral and welfare needs whilst Instructors provide a programme of activities. Camps can offer specialist courses or a multi-activity programme. Unlike American summer camps, which due to longer school breaks and less holiday leave for working parents often provide a home-from-home experience, residential camps in the UK usually involve just a 7 break. However, if your budget can be stretched there are a large number of residential camps operating throughout Europe and North America which can offer your child additional cultural and linguist experiences.
Multi-Activity Day Camps These are non-residential full-day camps running in your local area. They are for unaccompanied children from 3 years and above which usually run from Monday to Friday, offering a varied programme of sports or creative activities throughout the day. Typically multi-activity day camps involve 4 to 6 activities per day, with each activity session lasting between 1 and 1 ½ hours. Often the sessions focus on ‘tasters’ or introductions to a range of activities such as performing arts and outdoor adventure. Generally, children can attend for as many days as they wish, with a price discount for a full week’s attendance. Day camp arrival and departure times vary but the day usually starts between 9am and 10am and ends between 4 and 5pm. Many camps offer early drop off and late pick up options. Sports/Activity Courses or Workshops Specialising in a specific sport or activity such as performing arts or art and craft, these courses are usually for children of 7 years and above. They generally operate for 2 to 3 hours per day, running for just one day or as a progressive course over 4 to 5 days. Sports courses are often led by qualified instructors/ coaches or by local authority sports/leisure centres, specialist swim centres or riding schools. National governing body awards can sometimes be achieved. Performing arts workshops tend to be run by performing arts schools who also offer term time classes for children. Holiday Play Schemes These offer non-residential full or part-day supervised childcare for unaccompanied children from age 3 and above but are usually run by voluntary organisations or local authorities. Activities at play schemes may be specific, such as sports or art and craft, or involve a range of different activities. Many play schemes run off-site trips to attractions such as museums or parks. In the main, they are provided for children living in the catchment area of the venue.

Summer Reading Challenge at Hampshire Libraries
Every year around 26,000 Hampshire children take part in the Summer Reading Challenge. It’s fun and totally free! This year the theme is Space Chase; celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. Your child can help our space family, the Rockets, on a special mission - and have fun along the way. Sign up for the Challenge at your local library. Your child will be given a special mission folder to keep a record of their reading. Read at least six library books and collect stickers and rewards. They receive a certificate and a medal when they finish. In Hampshire around 26,000 children take part in the Summer Reading Challenge each year which helps to keep up their reading skills and confidence during the long holidays. According to The Reading Agency, reading for pleasure is more important to children’s academic success than their parents’ level of education or socio-economic status. At the heart of the Challenge is children choosing and sharing any books – in any format – that they like. Novels, fact books, joke books, e-books and audio books all count and your Hampshire library has staff and volunteers to help your child choose books they will really enjoy. From July - September 2019 they invite you to explore the exchange of skills, knowledge and experiences. Take part in one of their many exhibitions, creative workshops and events - working alongside their commissioned artists: Rhiannon Armstrong, Monica Bonomo and Susan Stockwell. These activities will inform the development of the commissioned artworks, created through a series of artist residencies at Aspex. Events and activities are being held at the gallery in Gunwharf Quays, as well as locations throughout the city, including Victorious Festival on Southsea Common. Discover more on their website: www. aspex.org.uk

PLUS, Marwell have welcomed a new male red panda, who has now joined the zoo’s female resident red panda, Mei Mei, in a new enclosure. Specifically designed by Marwell’s keepers and landscapes teams, the exhibit replicates a red panda’s natural habit. With three different areas to explore, Mei Mei and Peter’s new enclosure features lots of planted bamboo and thick low-lying bushes, as well as both coniferous and deciduous trees to keep them both content all year round. The new home also has multi-level viewing windows as well as climbing structures for the red pandas to pass people overhead. Great for photo opportunities!
