Families Welcome

This is England so we’ve learnt to be realistic and expect the worst when it comes to our climate. The glass isn’t half empty, it’s half full...with rain! So as well as checking out all the brilliant family attractions we have here in the south we’ve also found some great rainy day ideas to keep the children from bouncing off of the walls when you’re stuck indoors. There is absolutely LOADS going on this summer, so we have dedicated this issue to all these event and activities with lots of useful family tips from local parents to get you through the holidays in one piece. Happy Summer!

CBBC stars Richard McCourt & Dominic Wood host Camp Bestival’s family event this year. Here they talk to Rebecca Carr, Editor of Families Solent West about what we can expect from them.... How did you become involved with Camp Bestival? Dom: On a Saturday they have acts that are aimed towards children like Mr. Tumble and so they wanted to link it all together and thought of us. Dick: The first time we did it was last summer and the hosting of the main stage, it was a great experience and we loved the interaction with the crowd and children. Camp Bestival is a fantastic event for both adults and children, why do you think it is such a success? Dick: It is one of a kind and there isn’t really anything else like it that targets the family audience other than Camp Bestival. It is a unique event and as well as the children’s element to the festival it also has a lot for the parents so they can let go a bit too. Dom: The mixture of adults and kids works well and the kids were up until midnight and loving it and it is probably not often they get to do that. It all works so well.

What can we expect from you guys this year? Dom: It will be similar to last year - big crowd games, competitions and one of the things we do try to do is make the person right at the back feel as included as the person right at the front of the stage. Dick: We’ve also been brushing up on a new skill for the act – the ukulele! There’s lots of great acts this year, who are you most looking forward to seeing? Dick: The Happy Mondays – I’m a big fan and I’ve never actually seen them live so I am really looking forward to seeing them and the Rizzle Kicks! Dom: I’m looking forward to our set the most! What do you guys find funny? Dick: we really like old school stuff like the Two Ronnie’s or Vic and Bob Dom: Us! Dick: Yeah, but mostly the old comedies like the Carry on films. I like the old school sense of humour.

Dick & Dom If any of our young readers would like to follow in your footsteps and be on TV – what advice would you give them? Dick: Learn how to make a good cup of tea! Working in the right place helped me get an audition to be a presenter - I started at the BBC as a runner. Dom: Don’t want to be ‘just famous’ - better to get a skill under your belt. What’s next for Dick and Dom? Dick: We’re working on a new show called Hoopla, which we’re filming in Devon this summer, at Dingles Fairground Heritage Museum. Dom: It’s a fairground, circus type of act. It includes all the same

Day 58

Let’s celebrate! After years of effort, dedication and anticipation, it’s nearly here! The London 2012 Games marks a defining moment for athletes of Team GB and Paralympics GB – a chance to show the world what they can do on home soil. Portsmouth has been chosen as one of sixty six places invited to hold an evening celebration of the torch relay. The evening is due to start at 5pm on Sunday 15th July, the 58th day of the relay. It is set to be a free twohour event taking place on Southsea Common. Among other things it will showcase local talent as well as performances by the Rizzle Kicks and a stunning acrobatic show. Portsmouth City Council will present two, ten-minute slots of entertainment

Families xxxxxxx from local performers during the evening celebration. This will include a specially choreographed dance piece by Hampshire Dance performed in the Torchbearer Corridor leading up onto the stage. The New Theatre Royal Little Actors and Youth Theatre will also be performing a bespoke Dickensian piece. Finally a Portsmouth Music Service choir of 30 school children from across the city will bring the evening to a close by performing three songs from the Singathlon songbook. The audience will have the opportunity to participate in a number of activities courtesy of the presenting partners Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung. These include having your photograph taken with the London 2012 Torch and other Olympic-related activities. Towards the end of the two-hour show, the last Torchbearer of the day in Portsmouth will light a celebration cauldron on stage at the event which will enable the Olympic Flame to be seen by the audience.

Outside of Portsmouth? Each town is holding their own events as the torch passes through, see times below & contact your local council to find out what’s happening in your area.

Crafty Caterpillars! You will need: • • • • • •

1 x pipe cleaner 1 x 7cm Polystyrene Ball Approx. 30 Foam circles in 3 different sizes. Approx. 25 beads 2 Wiggly Eyes Yellow Paint

Step by step guide: • • • • • •

1. Paint the Polystyrene ball yellow and leave to dry. 2. Start threading the larger foam circles onto the pip cleaner with a bead in between each one, making sure you leave about 3cm clear. 3. Then thread the medium sized foam circles on followed by the smallest ones. 4. When you reach the end of your pipe cleaner fold the end over to stop any beads sliding off. 5. Push the top end of the pipe cleaner into the polystyrene ball and glue on the wiggly eyes. 6. Stack up any leftover foam circles and glue together for the hat. Draw on a mouth and nose to give your caterpillar a personality!

You know they love to paint but sometimes the thought of it all over your carpet, walls & furniture is too much to bear! Let them be creative, just somewhere where you don’t have to clean up after….

Grow your own At the beginning of the summer holidays it is sometimes difficult to imagine how on earth you are going to fill those long weeks before the return to school in September. You may be juggling work commitments with childcare and you may also be struggling with the fact that the sun does not always shine during the English summer! But don’t despair! For just a few pennies, you can get the children involved in something fun and, dare I say it, educational. Spending a bit of time growing some vegetables from seed is exciting and who knows, you may even get a tomato or some lettuce to eat at the end of it! To get started, grab an old plant pot or plastic cup (with holes pierced in the bottom), fill it with soil, then pop a seed in. Packets of seeds cost from as little as £1 and the variety is excellent.

Make sure you choose something that isn’t going to grow too big.

Although a child’s interest may wane soon after planting, there is something quite magical about the moment they first spot a little shoot! Make sure that the soil is kept moist to ensure success. And once your seedling is a good size, with a few leaves, you may like to transfer it to a bigger pot. The great thing about growing your own is that you can do it whether or not you have a garden! A windowsill is just as good for growing. And wherever you do it, you have fresh food at your fingertips.

Mums Mean

Business! Southsea mum of two Helen Littlejohn is doing something amazing for charity this summer. At the end of July when the tides are right and the water temperature is a bit warmer, Helen and four others including Steve Harris from Radio Solent, will be swimming the Solent. The group will be swimming the long route from Ryde pier to the war memorial on Southsea Common, which is about 3.25 miles -that’s about 200 lengths of a 25m pool – and will take them about 3 hours. The Solent Coastguard issue strict guidelines for swimming the Solent so they have three safety boats and a kayaker per person. As training Helen, who lives 10 minutes’ walk from Southsea Beach, has been swimming in the sea about 2/3 times per week for the last year and training seriously in the pool since last November. She has also joined a stamina class. Aside from the swim, their main fundraising event will be a Family Fun Day at

Eastney Community Centre in Bransbury Park on Sunday 22 July from 11am-4pm. It’s free admission and there will be music, a bouncy castle, food, stalls and great raffle prizes! Helen told FSE ‘I chose Oxfam because we have so much in the UK when there are people in the world who don’t have access to fresh water or enough food to eat, I wanted to raise money for a global organisation who are passionate about fighting poverty. Oxfam don’t just work on disaster relief and emergencies, they develop projects to put people in charge of their own lives.’ To sponsor Helen and help raise money for Oxfam you can visit her fundraising page on www.justgiving.com/ helenlittlejohn

Images courtesy of Claire Sambrook lends itself well to a celebratory party night out or in. Portsmouth is one of only 22 ‘London 2012 Live Sites’ with Big Screen action plus a spectator area. This might be the occasion to let our hair down: dine al fresco with blanket, chairs, cushions and let the kids stay up late! The eldest calls to me on a trip to the supermarket: ‘Dad. We’d like a Wenlock - he has 5 friendship bracelets, is orange and is really nice’. It looks like the Olympics could be more expensive than I first assumed. Darren Corps lives in Milton, is the father of two boys & Marketing Manager at The Spring Arts & Heritage Centre, Havant

‘Umm. Football’ I answer hesitantly. ‘OK. Well, I am looking forward to seeing the Olympic Park so that’s good’. ‘We’re off to Old Trafford’ I say. ‘We’re going to the home of Manchester United’. Despite my partners misgivings about the venue (and the costs) we are in fact looking forward to seeing Team GB in action this summer.

Approved football training for kids from 18 months to 7th birthday.

Can I kick it? Yes you can. Attended by over 10,000 children per week. Classes in Gosport, Hedge End, Portsmouth, Romsey, Southampton, Whiteley & Winchester. FA Qualified Coaches. Develops agility, balance and co-ordination. Early learning concepts such as colours and numbers are integrated into the activities. Fun, exciting and healthy for your child. No parent participation required.

This may in part be due to the fact that she has been somewhat appeased by a supplementary visit to see the Lowry Collection during our stay in Manchester. Actually, the whole family is beginning to get excited by The Games. There is the arrival of the Olympic Flame in Portsmouth on 15 & 16 July with an evening celebration on the Sunday, on Southsea Common, which is a free two-hour event of music, dance and acrobatics.
