Clubs and Classes Mum Thrilled with Confidence Boost from Perform Drama

ry a not t ation y h W blig no-o orm's E E R F t Perf trial a st class in newe looville! r Wate

With Perform drama classes wellestablished in Chichester, Petersfield and Fareham, we spoke to Jessica Harrison to find out why she has been sending her children, Ellie (9) and George (6), to Perform since the age of 4.

“Ellie is a natural performer” says Jessica, “so Perform was always going to work for her. George is a more reserved child who likes to play by himself, but actually, George probably gets more out of Perform than Ellie! He has grown so much in confidence since attending.” “Perform is not like a stage school. The children perform a show, but the focus is on fun games and exercises that teach them incredible life skills, like making eye contact, speaking out clearly and making conversation” reports Jessica. “Initially George mumbled a couple of words in the shows. Now he speaks out in a strong voice and smiles all the way through. This confidence has really improved his everyday interactions with family, school friends and teachers.” “These days, we spend so much time looking at our phones. Through Perform my children now understand the importance of engaging with others – and they don’t even know they’ve learned this!” To book a FREE TRIAL in Waterlooville (new class) Chichester, Petersfield or Fareham visit www.perform.org.uk.

Help your child grow confidence One of the most important skills children can master is selfconfidence: it will help them build friendships, perform well in school and resist negative peer pressure. But while some youngsters are blessed with a natural ability to run headlong into new activities others need a little help. According to the team at performing arts school Stagecoach Havant, performing arts can give even the shyest wallflower confidence. “It’s not only about training children to perform on stage, it’s about helping them to perform better in life,” said Juli Richards, Principal at the stage school. Chichester Women’s Support Centre My Sister’s House Seeks Local Celebrities and Influencers

News and Views Children’s Authors Top the Pops in Libraries The kids are taking over the libraries! Seven children’s authors - Julia Donaldson, Daisy Meadows, Roderick Hunt, Francesca Simon, Adam Blade, Jacqueline Wilson and Roald Dahl – are among the top 10 most borrowed authors in UK libraries, according to figures from annual data released by the British Library.

Chichester-based safe house for women is looking for local patrons with high profiles to raise funding and awareness for domestic violence in the UK. My Sister’s House, the only community women's centre in West Sussex, today announced its search for local patrons to help raise the centre’s profile and generate awareness around domestic violence. Piloted by a group of local women in 2014, My Sister’s House has grown into a valued community asset. My Sister’s House provides safe, tailored, trauma informed, empowering, outcome-focused and holistic 'extended casework' support for women. They are now looking for inspirational celebrities and influencers to become patrons of the centre, based in Chichester. “We have learned that many of our clients have been unable to benefit from mainstream services because their needs have been considered too ‘complex or challenging’ for the structures of conventional one-off services”, said Julie Budge, founder and CEO. “Our unique approach offers help to women to access multiple, integrated services and improve

health, personal and socio-economic opportunities, and we are in urgent need of local patrons with high profiles to help us raise awareness for domestic violence.” Support from high profile patrons would help My Sister’s House secure the key management roles in the short-term to lead vital future areas of work. They are also launching a cafe and a training centre in 2018 and is looking for professional trainers wishing to utilise the centre. For more details about My Sister’s House, visit the website at www.mysistershouse.info.

David Walliams’ popularity continues to soar and he’s now the nineteenth most borrowed author, up from forty first place in 2014-15. Jeff Kinney does not make it into the top ten authors but his Diary of a Wimpy Kid series is clearly a big hit with kids with eight titles in the series featuring in the top 10 most borrowed children’s fiction titles. For parents looking for something for their ‘reluctant reader,’ this library data provides a helpful guide to what other children love. For more details on most borrowed children’s authors and titles visit www.bl.uk/plr.

Little Oaks at Oakwood School Little Oaks Nursery is holding an afternoon of Easter fun on Thursday 22nd March. You and your child will be able to join in craft activities, meet the school rabbits, Apple and Acorn, and enjoy exploring the beautiful setting.

Education and Early Years First Steps at Portsmouth Grammar School Nurturing and developing a lifelong love of learning is at the heart of our provision for our youngest children, who benefit greatly from a caring and supportive approach to their personal development. It is so important that our children feel happy, that their contribution is valued from day one and that they learn to value the contribution of others. Our small class sizes, supported by a full time Teacher and TA, ensures this is possible. From their first day at school, the children are learning the essential skills of reading, writing and numeracy alongside the personal skills of sharing, respect and independence. They do this in a happy, coeducational environment in bright, spacious classrooms. The Form Teacher becomes each child’s key person, responsible for their academic and personal learning journey, and the link between school and home.

The nursery has a warm family atmosphere with a great sense of fun. Caring teachers ensure that children are given the opportunity to develop their potential and grow in confidence in a happy, safe and nurturing environment. Little Oaks children participate in a wide range of activities, including dance, P.E., music, French and swimming. The nursery has full use of the school’s extensive facilities, including the gymnasium, theatre, superb playing fields, pool and woodland. Great emphasis is placed on building a solid foundation of social skills and a love of learning, enabling the children to feel settled and ready to discover all that Oakwood School offers. A recent ISI report stated that Little Oaks children “are outward-looking and eager to explore”.

Technology Good for Kids Learning Research indicates that 96% of teachers believe technology has had a positive impact on the way children participate and learn, whilst 56% believe that pupils are more engaged when technology is used, according to a survey.

The foundations provided in Reception year ensure not only a smooth transition into Year 1, but that every child has developed a love of learning that will stay with them for life.

An impressive 86% of teachers also say that technology has made them perform better and prepare more varied and exciting lessons. However, at least a third of teachers are worried about using technology in class because they cannot control what each child is doing whist it is being used. A similar number of parents also think that children already have too much access to technology and don’t need it at school.
