EDUCATION
What to expect from ICT at primary school By Zuzu Jordan When managed well, technology can transform learning into an engaging and interactive experience. Yet technology now develops and changes so fast that parents may find it difficult to keep up with what their children are learning. Schools are constantly reviewing their ICT (Information Communication Technology) practice and policies in light of the forever evolving technological world. Additionally, the Covid home schooling experience made schools, parents and carers evaluate both the available tools and what children need in order to access learning, whatever the situation. At primary school, parents can expect their children to be taught ‘computer science’ in ICT lessons including coding, algorithms and writing programmes to improve the world around us. They will be encouraged to use technology and logical reasoning purposefully. The range of devices and software used to achieve this will vary from school to school. For instance, there are number of free online games which help children learn to code such as www.studio.code.org and www.scratch.mit.edu. With ICT integrated across the whole curriculum, children will be using some form of technology in most subjects. This may include using tablets, laptops, cameras and the internet. Teachers use SMART boards allowing children to directly interact with devices in lots of different ways. Students will use technology for research and presenting information. Schools buy software to help teach some of the curriculum; for instance, Duolingo to support modern foreign language lessons. Some standard tests are even administered online such as the multiplication check in Year 4. Schools and parents have a dual role in teaching children to be responsible users of communication and information platforms. Children learn about the benefits and uses of these platforms but the inherent risks involved in online activity is what receives most attention during ICT lessons. The online world is hard to control and monitor and can be very daunting for parents. All schools should hold an Online Safety Agreement Policy which outlines their plans to safeguard children online. This may tie in with their anti-bullying and child protection policies. Part of these policies involves families agreeing to clear expectations and boundaries. In schools,

pupils are explicitly taught to use technology safely and report any unacceptable behaviour. They are taught about privacy, protecting their online identity and knowing where and how to report anything disrespectful. In addition, teachers discuss the importance of critical thinking when children obtain information from the internet. Meanwhile, at home, we are now surrounded by multiple devices to monitor including phones, tablets, smart TVs, smartphones and speakers. Games consoles are increasingly connecting people to the online world too, with children as young as age 2 able to work these devices independently. It’s a great idea to devise your own family online safety agreement such as this one from Childnet (www.childnet.com) at www.bit.ly/OnlineFamilyAgreement It’s also important to set clear time limits on devices, check parental controls on websites and consider the location of the devices in your home. One thing that children fear the most is having devices taken away so encourage transparent communication between you and an atmosphere where they feel comfortable to tell you about anything that worries them. Other useful links for parents include NSPCC at www.bit.ly/ NSPCCOS and Think U Know (www.thinkuknow.co.uk). Meet THE
Cameron Vale School A new school year and a new Headmistress!
Alison Melrose joined Cameron Vale last January and has just completed her first full year at the school. With a career working across London prep schools, she started her career at Norland Place, followed by Headships at Broomwood Hall, St Nicholas Prep and was the founding Head at Prince’s Gardens Preparatory School. Alison was also a community governor at a local primary school for seven years and has worked for global schools' group Cognita. She joins Cameron Vale and Forfar Education with a wealth of experience.
head
Q: How would the students describe you? ‘My Mum likes Mrs Melrose more than she likes me’! was quoted to me recently. Having asked the children in Years 5 and 6 to describe me, they came up with; ‘Mrs Melrose is a great Headmistress. She is organised, professional, and makes sure everyone’s on their best behaviour.’ Mrs Melrose is the best Headmistress and is really kind, so for whoever is reading this I hope you come to our school.’ Q: What was it about the school that made you want to apply for the position? Cameron Vale reminds me of the school where I had my first headship, a smaller, family orientated, community school where you build true and lasting relationships with the families and staff. Whilst being a Head in a school is incredibly busy and tiring, I cycle to work each morning with a smile on my face and am incredibly fortunate to be part of the Cameron Vale community. Q: What did you want to be when you grew up? When I was much younger, I wanted to be a ballerina and danced until I was nearly 16. After taking part in Strictly Heads, a Strictly-style dance competition between a group of London Headteachers in aid of a charity called icandance a couple of years ago, I returned to taking adult classes at The Royal Academy. Being a surgeon also crossed my mind! Q: What have you been most proud of since joining Cameron Vale School as Head Teacher? Joining a school mid-year is always a challenge and you feel somewhat like you are always trying to catch up. However, in the last twelve months we have been accredited with OFSTED to open our Baby Room provision and inspected by ISI to be awarded a double excellent report. I am so proud of all the pupils, parents and staff for working together and embracing our vision of personalised learning for all with high academic standards but retaining a nurturing and community feel. familiesonline.co.uk
Q: What is your best memory so far at Cameron Vale School? I have two best memories from my time at the school so far; the first was seeing the very happy, albeit exhausted faces of the Year 3-6 children as they staggered off the coach returning from their residential trip. For many it was the first time they had been away from home, and they had an amazing time. Secondly, how the school community came together to celebrate the coronation. The school was decorated, flags were flying and we held a street party on the pavement outside with coronation quiche, cupcakes and treats. Lots of parents came to join us and even the rain could not put a dampener on the situation – everyone sprang into action and we had everyone inside, warm and dry, in about three minutes flat! Q: Netflix or theatre, book or Kindle? Book See for yourself Join Mrs Melrose and the children at Cameron Vale School and The Chelsea Nursery at one of their upcoming open days or messy play sessions: • Open Days start at 9.15am on Wednesday 7 February and Wednesday 1 May • Messy play sessions can be booked on 25 January and 14 March. The Importance Of Praising ‘For Being’ A quick Google search will bring up a multitude of blogs, articles, and research papers, all advocating the importance of praising effort, not just outcome. As educators, this is a given, and we know it helps children develop that all-important ‘growth mindset’. By praising effort, we are helping children understand that when they find something difficult, it is the importance of a growth mindset which will help them complete an activity, not their innate ability in a task. In short, we are helping children become more resilient.
ways to praise a colleague at work that do not involve any ‘doing’, be that outcome or effort; it’s hard!).
Dr Christopher Halls
B
oth praise for outcome and effort can be more important: praise for ‘being’. A few categorised as praising ‘doing’. For examples might be that when we shake hands example, if we praise the outcome of with the children each morning, we say, ‘It is so winning a rugby match or the effort in nice to see you,’ or when we are working, we playing well in a football match where might say, ‘I’m so glad you are in this class.’ the team lost, the child had to ‘do’ The difference compared with the other “Nevertheless, something in both cases. Whether forms of praise listed above is that the just because it is that is scoring the winning goal or child does not need to ‘do’ anything to difficult does not putting in the effort to persevere, receive this praise, which makes it mean we the child could have chosen not incredibly important. to do it. shouldn’t do it” At Dulwich Prep London, we strive to There is, therefore, a third strand to create a culture where every child feels praise, which is, in my view, perhaps even valued as an individual. At the heart of this lies a strong self-belief. In a society where it is increasingly difficult to understand how and where they will fit in, it is incumbent on schools to ensure that children feel secure in who they are. To do this, children need to be ‘topped up’ with positive praise for simply ‘being’ in order to reinforce the feeling that who they are is enough. However, this culture at Dulwich Prep London is not just reserved for children. We want our staff to feel equally comfortable praising each other for ‘being’ and parents to feel comfortable doing the same. It is, however, not easy, and therefore requires conscious effort (I challenge you to think on the spot of familiesonline.co.uk
FamiliesSWLondon
Nevertheless, just because it is difficult does not mean we shouldn’t do it. In fact, given the importance, it is crucial that we ensure ‘praise for being’ becomes a daily habit. By daily habit, I recommend that we all try to build it into our day. For example, you may wish to start each day with, ‘It’s so nice to see you this morning!’ or end each day with, ‘I am looking forward to starting the day with you tomorrow,’ or ‘Thank you for letting me share this book with you.’ I can guarantee that the impact will not just be immediate with a happier child; you will also be ensuring that your child builds a stronger selfbelief, which will invariably lead to improved wellbeing as they tackle the inevitable challenges life will bring. And remember, if it feels awkward, perhaps it is because you haven’t been saying it enough! Thank you for finishing this article (praise for doing, outcome). Thank you for reaching the end of this article (praise for doing, effort). Thank you for letting me share this idea with you (praise for being!). The Gift of Speaking Two Languages Situated in the heart of lively Fulham, L’Ecole des Petits warmly invites families to explore its captivating world of bilingual learning tailored for little ones aged 3-6. Established in 1977, this French-English school firmly believes that bilingualism isn't just a skill – it's a powerful asset, unlocking endless opportunities and boundless potential! Recent studies reveal that bilingualism sparks enhanced cognitive abilities, creativity, and advanced problem-solving skills. As young learners master both languages, they're not just absorbing words; they're embracing a distinctive perspective perfect for today's interconnected global stage. And the earlier they start the better. The children learn to effortlessly glide between French and English conversations, seamlessly blending linguistic finesse with a sharp cognitive edge as they mature. The meticulously designed curriculum goes beyond simple language acquisition; it cultivates an environment where children thrive, celebrating cultural diversity with over 30 nationalities represented.
The diverse team is passionately dedicated to providing a nurturing space where children don't just grow – they flourish. From engaging activities to personalised pastoral care, the pupils thrive in a supportive and secure environment.

The Importance of Love in a Child’s Early Years By Gabriella Emery
I
n a child's early years, the impact of love, both at home and in nurturing environments like quality nurseries, plays a pivotal role in their development. Parental love, akin to the 'professional love' in effective early years settings, focuses on understanding and meeting a child's emotional needs, fostering selfesteem.
to experience the transformative power of bilingual education!
Spend quality time Prioritise simple shared activities over a hectic schedule. Even brief moments of quality time speak volumes, creating precious bonds. Have a sense of order Maintain important routines, like bedtime and bath times, providing stability for children. Consistency fosters a sense of security and love. Be supportive Approach mistakes as learning opportunities, discussing openly and offering support. Embrace a growth mindset, reframing "I can't do it" to "I can't do it yet," coupled with a reassuring hug.
Key reminders for fostering a loving environment for children include: Listen Acknowledge the powerful voice of children by actively listening, making eye contact, and valuing their opinions. Words of affirmation contribute significantly to their sense of value.
Understand Learn how your child expresses and receives love. Tailor gestures to their preferences, whether through specific praise, physical touch, or timely assistance.
Be fair Recognise each child's individuality, especially in households with multiple children. Emphasise qualities over skills to express love equally.
Model Set an example by being a role model for loving behaviours. Use the word "love" openly, and explore love through books, such as The Invisible String by Patrice Karst.

In essence, the love children experience at home and in early years settings shapes their emotional well-being. Understanding their needs, actively listening, and fostering a supportive, consistent environment contribute significantly to their development.

HEALTH
Knee Pain: avoiding 'training errors' this January. Individuals wake up on New Year's Day with a dreary-eyed optimism that 'this will be the year' they finally achieve health and fitness goals.
Recommendations include:
They embark on a spending spree for lycrabased products and different coloured resistance bands, claiming to turn them into fitness fanatics.
● Use strength work on old injuries
They put on trainers and go for the first run. Lungs burn, and everything seems to hurt. The decision is made to train as much as possible for faster fitness gains, attempting something every day.
Why are these important? Because making a ‘training error’ is the most common reason for knee pain. This means doing too much work too soon. A gradual introduction to a new exercise routine lowers the risk of injury. This is also important to those who normally exercise but take a break over Christmas and New Year for longer than a week.
The initial weeks feel great, and motivation remains high. By week 3, the realisation hits that not everything hurts—just a solemn bout of knee pain remains. Particularly when sitting for too long, climbing stairs, or engaging in legbased exercises (squats, lunges, jumping). Drat, an injury! This is a story heard all too often, written to prompt individuals to act before it's too late.

Chicken, leek & apple casserole Although Christmas has passed, we are unfortunately still in the midst of the dark and cold winter season. This seasonal dish draws inspiration from classic, creamy French casseroles. The leeks impart a gentle flavor into the sauce as they braise, becoming meltingly tender. Pair it with mashed potatoes and buttered greens or a warm crusty baguette. It's a perfect dish for the entire family to enjoy on a cold, dark evening.
