Exciting ways to support St Elizabeth Hospice this year By St Elizabeth Hospice The back to school season is upon us and amongst this new term lies a new challenge for school children and groups.

The Accumulator Challenge The Accumulator Challenge encourages children to think outside the box and turn £30 into more money for St Elizabeth Hospice. Turn that £30 in to a bake sale, and raise over £100 for your local hospice, how you choose to transform your funds is entirely up to you. This follows the success of Elmer’s Big Parade this summer, which helped raise awareness of the hospice.

We can all relate to these situations, but making small changes can make a big difference when it comes to alcohol.

Why make the change?

There are lots of benefits to reducing how much alcohol you drink, including spending more quality time with your loved ones, saving money for something more worthwhile, losing weight and improving your health and mental wellbeing.

Small changes that can make a big difference Cutting down can make you feel better and give you more time to do the things you really enjoy.

Try some of the following small changes: ∞ Try to have several alcohol free days in a week. ∞ Search out lower strength or alcohol-free beers. ∞ You don’t have to have a glass of wine in front of the telly – try swapping it for something non-alcoholic that still feels like a treat.

∞ Why not substitute with water, non-alcoholic beer, coffee or a soft drink.

No one ever really thinks that their child might stop breathing one day. As a parent, it’s easy to have an “it won’t happen to me” attitude. I mean there are so many other things to worry about.

Just feeding our children and getting them where they need to be on time can be a struggle!

But if it did happen to you, would you really be confident to perform CPR on your child if needed?

Here at Mini First Aid we can’t stress enough that every parent should attend a First Aid class. Nothing beats the hands-on practise that we offer during our 2 hour Mini First Aid classes, this makes this process much easier to understand and ensures that you can perform the techniques correctly.

If someone stops breathing, CPR really is the difference between life and death.

CPR is a combination of rescue breaths to manually put oxygen in and chest compressions to manually pump the oxygen, via the blood, around the body to the brain and vital organs.

The techniques for babies under 1 are very different.

Below is the action to take for a child who is one year or older.

(Please note CPR for babies and adults are different).

1.

Check the area is safe (look for hazards such as traffic, electrical equipment or slip hazards)

2.

See if the child is responsive, by talking to them, tapping their shoulders or pinching their ear lobe (can they talk, move or open their eyes?)

If no response, then shout for help.

4.

Lay them on their back, on the floor, and open their airway by tilting the head and lifting the chin.

5.

Check for breathing. Keeping the airway open, look, listen breaths give 5 rescue and feel for NORMAL breathing (see picture) (look for 10 seconds. We need to see 2-4 normal breaths, if they are gasping this is not normal breathing)

6.

If your child isn’t breathing, or is breathing infrequently or irregular then call 999 and start CPR

7.

Start by tilting the head back, pinch the nose and give 5 rescue breaths into their mouth. (see picture)

8.

Follow by doing 30 chest compressions to the centre of their chest (in line with their armpits) with the heel of one hand at a rate of 100-120 per minute (roughly 2 per second). It’s essential that you push down a 1/3 of the depth of their chest. (see picture)

9.

Next, open the airway again and give 2 more rescue breaths.

10.

Repeat steps 8 and 9 until further help arrives, you become exhausted or they start showing signs of life (normal breathing, coughing, moving)

WHAT IS A NUPTIAL AGREEMENT? The term nuptial agreement applies to separation, post and pre-nuptial agreements that are made between couples who are or who intend to be married or have a civil partnership.

The main difference between the three classes is simply one of timing; pre-nuptials are drawn up before the marriage or civil partnership is entered into, post-nuptials during, and separation agreement if the couple decides to separate.

A nuptial agreement is a contract just like any other. The normal contractual rules apply to determine whether a binding agreement exists, that is, the court will look for offer and acceptance and for an intention to create legal relations.

Here are some advantages to having in place a nuptial agreement: • A party may want to protect assets such as inherited wealth, an interest in a family business, gifts from a third party, family heirlooms or property owned before marriage.

• The parties can agree at the outset of their marriage how their finances will be divided if they later divorce to save uncertainty, time and stress of later contested proceedings.

• A properly negotiated nuptial agreement must contain financial disclosure, so both parties know at the outset the value (or approximate value) of each other’s assets.

• It is often cheaper to negotiate and draft a nuptial agreement than the cost of solicitors contesting financial remedy proceedings at a later date in the event of a divorce.

• Discussing financial issues can be one of the most difficult aspects of marriage. Dealing with this at the outset of a marriage can strengthen a relationship and help with communication.

Is Your Child Sport Ready?

By Raymond Vestibule Physical activity is good for children of all ages and participation in organised sports may be an enjoyable way for children to be physically active. However, sporting activities must be developmentally appropriate for your child. Enrolling your child in a sport or activity beyond their developmental ability can lead to frustration and early dropout.

Ages 2 - 5 Toddlers and pre-schoolers may be beginning to get the hang of many basic movements but are too young for most organised sports. So at this age don’t stress too much if your little one isn’t enrolled in a dozen different activities. According to the Mayo Clinic, toddlers who participate in organised sports typically don’t gain any long-term advantage in terms of future sports performance. At this age, unstructured free play is usually best.

Try running, tumbling, throwing, catching and swimming.

Ages 6 - 9 As children get older, their vision, attention span and transitional skills, such as throwing a ball for distance, improve. They’re also better able to follow directions.

Consider organised activities such as running, football, gymnastics, dance, swimming, tennis and martial arts.

Ages 10 - 12 By this age, children have mature vision and the ability to understand and recall sports strategies. Children of this age are typically ready to take on complex skill sports, such as football, basketball, hockey and volleyball.

As well as considering whether a sport is age-appropriate for your child, take into account how much they will enjoy the activity based on their maturity and abilities. Your child may show a natural preference for one activity over another, which shouldn’t be ignored.

Remember children change as they grow and it’s normal for them to show a keen interest in one activity one year, only to switch to another by the next. Keep monitoring their level of interest and stay involved with their progress. Be positive and encouraging by emphasising effort and enjoyment over winning and never try to persuade your child to continue with a sport they clearly don’t enjoy, whatever age they are.

Anglia Indoor Karting If the exciting world of Motorsport really gets your child’s engine revving, bring them down to the Anglia Indoor Kart Racing Cadet Karting Club. Club members meet every Sunday morning at 9am and have exclusive use of the track from 9.30am to 11.00am. Water Babies: What we’ll teach you and how our classes work We’ll teach you to teach your baby to swim. From lesson one, we’ll get your little one used to the sensation of the water, developing their natural instincts and transforming these into core aquatic skills.

By the end of the programme, your little one will be swimming freely using different strokes and be able to keep themselves safe in and around the water.

We work closely with Swim England, the national governing body for swimming and we’ve woven their learn to swim framework through our programme. So you’ll be simply amazed at the progress they’ve made.

The importance of a good start

Early exposure to high quality teaching and learning in a happy and supportive environment is key to academic success and the surroundings in which the teaching and learning take place is as influential as the teacher and activities themselves.

An integral concept of the Reggio Emillia approach to early childhood education is that:

‘The learning environment is the third teacher’.

It is this principle that has inspired the design of the Nursery at Old Buckenham Hall. We have established a balance of being friendly and welcoming alongside creating calm, interesting, innovative and inspiring environments for learning. The Nursery is painted in neutral colours, the room is filled with natural light and the space is free from clutter. The furniture, toys and soft furnishings are made from natural materials and have been sourced from a company who ensures they are produced in fair working conditions and with fair wages. We have made a conscious decision to avoid as much plastic as possible.

We are proud to be environmentally responsible and to educate our children from such an early age about an important cause.

The flexible continuous provision of roleplay, small world, mark making, fine motor control and investigative learning activities in an environment where there are fewer distractions allows the children to make excellent progress and exceed age-related expectations.

Communication and Language development for two year olds.

By Lauren Shave, Nursery Manager at Wellington Nursery Communication and language is crucial to young children’s overall development and underpins many other areas such as: • Promoting social skills and forming friendships.

• Building confidence and self-esteem.

• Supporting emotional and behavioral development.

• Helping children to make sense of the world around them.

At the Wellington Nursery in Ipswich we are currently taking part in a project specifically aimed at our two year olds and supporting their communication and language development.

This has involved staff undertaking Elklan speech and language training and additional work being carried out with the children such as: 1:1 stories, weekly story telling sessions, family fun sessions and being able to experience exciting FREE trips out to the farm and seaside with our children and their parents/carers. We have seen amazing progress from our two year olds since the project started!

Communication and language skills are fundamental to a two year olds development; children need to be able to understand and be understood. We believe communication is essential for learning, play and social interaction.

Education Feature Huddl advice for the new school year

Parental Pressure Advice from Dr Rosemary Taylor.

Teaching is the second greatest vocation – the first is being a parent for which we get no training whatsoever!

If we’re honest, our egos ride on how well our children do.

We take pleasure from their successes and are disappointed by their failures, not just for them but for ourselves too…

However, apart from great genes, unconditional love and a good education, one of the greatest gifts we can give our children is confidence.

Crucially, we do this not by endlessly pushing or praising them, but by allowing them to do things for themselves.

When you do something for them that they are quite capable of doing for themselves, whether it is carrying a school bag, ‘over-helping’ with homework or a school project or even taking over in a friendship issue, you erode your child’s growing self-esteem.

Performance at school goes a long way to shaping a child’s future, you know that – and so do they. But it’s a bit like being the trainer of a fighter – you can coach all you like but you can’t go into the ring with them. So the best thing you can do is to stand back and give advice in-between rounds…

“If you don’t start studying you’ll end up leaving school with nothing, all you’ll be qualified to do is fry burgers or stack shelves in a supermarket…” Unsurprisingly this usually has little or no effect other than to make them feel even worse than they do already! The reality is that most young people WANT to do well in school – they don’t lack motivation but what they do sometimes lack is self-discipline.

Supervision – agreed timed study periods without phone, TV, internet (except strictly for educational purposes) i.e. exactly as it would be at school – is sensible. At secondary age, and especially when approaching exams, this should be in place whether they have homework or not. After the given time, they can do what they like – free time. Stay with it, it does require effort and input from you too but it works.

Sometimes it’s ok – and indeed important, to nudge. But it can be a two-edged sword so needs to be used carefully because whilst a gentle push can achieve positive results, there are risks. Push too hard, and they simply stop. High hopes can be a real burden.

Your role is not to be the smartest or most capable person in the room, your role is to interact, collaborate and foster talent. They will, at times, be discouraged or distracted at which point she will expect you to do the heavy lifting. You can help, but you can’t do it for them – you can and do invest effort in your children, but they have to invest effort in themselves too, that’s the simple truth.

Be generous, be open-minded, be clear, be persistent, be present – give them your time and energy and, most importantly, the benefit of the doubt. Believe in them, even when they stumble or fail to believe in themselves.

Always remember that you cannot and should not protect a child from conflict, disappointments, frustrations or mistakes – these experiences are inevitable and affirm your child’s ability to cope with challenges. Through these experiences children sharpen their problem-solving skills, learn to see life as it is and develop tenacity and strength.

Organising Firework Events With Bonfire Night looming, we have some great advice to ensure you and your family have a fun and safe night.

It’s great for children to enjoy fireworks but they also need to know that they can be dangerous if they are not used properly.

Each year over half of all firework injuries are suffered by children.

Injury figures support the advice that the safest place to enjoy fireworks is at a large public display - far fewer people are injured here than at smaller family or private parties. But if you are thinking of using fireworks at home, please follow this safety advice so that everyone has a good time without getting hurt.

The Firework code ∞ Stand well back ∞ Keep pets indoors ∞ Keep fireworks in a closed box ∞ Only buy fireworks that are CE marked ∞ Light at arm’s length, using a taper ∞ Follow the instructions on each firework ∞ Never give sparklers to a child under five ∞ Don’t drink alcohol if setting off fireworks ∞ Always supervise children around fireworks ∞ Light sparklers one at a time and wear gloves ∞ Never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them ∞ Never go near a firework that has been lit - even if it hasn’t gone off it could still explode

What’s On Many events and activities have been confirmed for the first ever Suffolk Libraries Day on: 12 Oct 2019. www.suffolklibraries.co.uk/ suffolk-libraries-day Suffolk Libraries Day is designed to generate support and awareness of Suffolk’s library service and its impact on the county.

Suffolk Libraries Day will take place at the end of National Libraries Week and will see special events take place at all 44 libraries with the aim of showcasing everything libraries have to offer the community. The day will also raise funds to support the county’s library service. Some highlights include:

North Suffolk and Waveney: ∞ Magician event with a pop-up café and book sale at Brandon Library. ∞ A sponsored read at Bungay Library. ∞ A literary festival including authors, workshops, a library trail and book fair at Lowestoft Library.

Ipswich area: ∞ Readathon with Sproughton Primary School at Broomhill Library. ∞ Cinderella ball and a Community Womble Litter Pick at Chantry Library. ∞ A sing-a-thon on the Cornhill with all Ipswich libraries invited, organised by Gainsborough Community Library.

Towards the West: ∞ A ‘Step behind the desk...’ experience to live that librarian fantasy at Bury St Edmunds Library. ∞ An ‘Apple Day’ with apple-based food, a working apple press and crafts at Long Melford Library. ∞ Scavenger hunt around the library and a children’s author event at Sudbury Library.
