Welcome & Contents
Hello... A very rare family photo!
In this Issue
Welcome to our Summer Edition.
It doesn’t seem possible that in a matter of weeks another school year will be over and the summer holidays will be upon us. It’s normally around this time that I start to panic about how I am going to fill the long 6 weeks, but having spent the last few weeks working on this issue, my concern now is how I am going to fit everything in. We have put together a fantastic ‘Summer in Suffolk’ guide to help you plan ahead and have an amazing family summer. We have also managed to sneak in a few suggestions for days out that may just take you across the county borders too - but we promise they will be well worth the effort. If you are looking for fun and adventure this summer - then we have just the thing for you. Suffolk Museums have a programme of activities and events this summer that you will not want to miss. For more information see pages 12 - 13. With so much going on, we will also be adding regular event details and useful information on our social media pages so please make sure you follow us to stay up to date. With Best Wishes

Clubs & Classes
iSwim Lorraine Ager, founder of iSwim offers classes for children of all ages and abilities and thinks that lessons should be fun and enjoyable. She tells us more about her successful and growing swim school... Pupils should leave primary school able to swim 25m unaided, but the percentage that can do this is very low. Reports have found almost half of primary school children in England are unable to swim a length by themselves even though it is a skill on the National Curriculum. Swimming is a life skill and not just an after school club! We find it sad that some older children are not comfortable in and around water and are unable to swim. Swimming needs to be fun and enjoyable and at iSwim we make this our primary objective! We have lessons 7 days a week and will also be running crash courses and fun activities over the Summer holidays at Clopton and Witnesham. We teach children of all ages and abilities from 4 months - 16 years. We keep the children in similar age groups and will be offering older children who cannot yet swim the opportunity to swim with others the same age in some of our new groups. We follow the National teaching plan and teach up to stage 10. Our teachers are all great and have many years of experience and some have competitive level backgrounds for excellent advanced classes! We are also with the addition of two new pools on the look out for fab new teachers!
Ipswich and Colchester Sling Library Spreading the ___ love for carrying Are you confused by all the options?
We have 9 swimming pools in the Woodbridge and Ipswich area, with our newest pools at Eyke primary school and an amazing brand new pool in Sudbourne - Chillesford Lodge. Early Years
Early years care better for children’s development...
New YMCA Trinity Group Childcare setting opens in Ipswich
A study funded by the Department of Education has found that the provision of early education to children aged 2 has a significant positive effect on their language and socioemotional development when they reach age 3. This is regardless of their family’s level of advantage. Interestingly, the report found that increased time spent with registered childminders at age 2 is associated with a better outcome in terms of verbal development for children at age 3.
The report found that no matter how rich and how high the quality of a child’s home environment is or if early childcare is provided by relatives, friends or non-Ofsted registered carers, it was more beneficial for a 2 year old’s development to have spent time in early education and care in a group-based setting, such as a nursery or playgroup, or with a registered childminder.
However, spending time in group or childminder settings is associated with similar amounts of benefit for social and behavioural outcomes. The Study of Early Education and Development (SEED) is following the development of almost 6,000 children in England from ages 2 to 7. For more information, visit: www.natcen.ac.uk
YMCA Trinity Group’s newest childcare setting, YMCA Childcare Providence located on Wellington Street in Ipswich, is now open and caring for children aged 0-12 years old. The facility is situated in YMCA Trinity Group’s main building in Ipswich which also acts as a community hub for a number of clubs and groups; this allows families to take advantage of a range of activities as well as using the childcare setting. YMCA Childcare Providence is the fourth YMCA Childcare facility in Suffolk. There are already two settings in Lowestoft and one recently opened in Grundisburgh. For more information visit:

Family Law
Parental Alienation Increasing hostilities between separating parents have led to the concept of parental alienation the idea that a child will reject or resist one parent. The scale of parental alienation remains undetermined due to the lack of data, however, it is widely felt that the various degrees of alienating behaviours sit on the cusp of mild to severe with varying impact on the child. Carol Robinson, Family Law Solcitor at Barker Gotelee tells us more...
addition to the coaching they have been subjected to by the hostile parent. Where a parent is alienated from the child, it is increasingly considered to be in the child’s best interests to use the authority of the Court, and the professionals will then come into play. The Court must consider its decision very carefully to ensure that the children and adults are safe, and that the children are able to maintain relationships with both parents. At Barker Gotelee we recognise that parents sometimes need support and advice from an experienced family law solicitor. To book a consultation please telephone 01473 611211 and ask for a member of the family team.
Why do we have parental alienation? There are a number of reasons why parental alienation comes about. It can be caused by, but not exclusively, bitterness surrounding the relationship breakdown and the circumstances in which it broke down, jealousy of the new partner of the other parent, or possessiveness on the part of the alienating parent, seeking to keep the child to him/ herself. It is only in limited circumstances that the parent is correct to alienate the child from the other parent, and those circumstances are extreme. Alienating behaviours can include, but are not limited to, a parent repeatedly badmouthing or belittling the other parent in front of the child, limiting contact in order to restrict the continuation of the relationship, flatly refusing to discuss the other parent and giving the impression that the other parent dislikes or does not love the child.
Life | Land | Business
We offer you a range of family law services
At the most extreme level, it can lead to an irrational denial of contact which results in the child rejecting the other parent, making them an ex-parent in the process. Once this has occurred, it is extremely difficult to resume that relationship, which is the ultimate goal of the parent creating the situation.
We all need help from time to time. Our friendly and approachable solicitors are on hand to advise you on a host of family law matters.
How do we deal with parental alienation?
· Children - support and expert advice on arrangements for children
The starting point in dealing with parental alienation is the identification of risk of harm, and this is to include emotional harm. Adult behaviours and attitudes should be professionally assessed, and this is generally done through a Court process brought about by the alienated parent. It has been identified that the alienated child will hold strong views of their own in

huddl Support for the parenting journey
Screen Time! Parenting children who are growing up in a rapidly changing digital world can be challenging and it is hard for parents to keep up to date with what children are doing online and the risks they may face. It would be great if the professionals could give us a clear guide on how much screen time is appropriate for our children, but every child is different and not enough research has been completed. Internet Matters suggests quality not quantity is important, stating: “Excessive media consumption in children can cause adverse effects on the child’s development later in life, in terms of health, lifestyle, social skills and academic achievements. In other words, good parenting involves providing both leeway and limits regarding media consumption”.
A healthy media diet involves a balance between three factors: • What children are doing. • How much time they spend on it. • The content of the media: Which stories are told, which values are taught, what are the educational benefits?” Huddl speaker Professor Emma Bond said: ”Parents need to keep talking to their children whatever age they are, they need to stay interested in what they are doing online and in doing so they can love and care for their children offline and online.” This summer holidays we would suggest being involved and interested in their screen time activities and not ask “how much screen time is ok for my child?” but ask - “what is good screen time content“ and “when is it appropriate for them”.

Suffolk Mum in Business
Suffolk Mum in Business:
Nina Parnham
Families Suffolk Magazine has been talking to local mum and business woman Nina Parnham, founder of Mama Wellness about the expert support she offers women who are planning a baby, are pregnant or who have birthed a baby. In 2005, Nina Parnham began teaching water aerobics for pregnant women. As a midwife, she understood that women who enjoyed keeping active in their pregnancy were keen to find a class that was tailored to their specific needs. Over the next 13 years Nina continued her studies into health and fitness for women during pregnancy and postnatally, and today offers a host of tailored classes, workshops, therapies and services, that ensure women receive the highest quality support, during these important life phases. Nina’s services really are quite unique. Quite simply, women’s health and wellness are specialist areas, and so women need the understanding and expertise of a professional who has been educated to a high level, to offer up-todate, researched based and effective approaches to their care and treatment. Nina comments “In my career, as a Midwife, I would often see women who were struggling with varying health issues, either because of a previous pregnancy, or birth. I wanted to provide women with real solutions for their most pressing concerns such as incontinence, pelvic organ prolapses, back and/or pelvic pain and caesarean scar issues.
8
One of the most important strategies women can learn is about ‘core rehabilitation’, and I use a combination of mindfulness, fitness, fat loss and restorative, soft tissue health approaches that for many provide a foundation for deep transformation and empowerment”.
“I wanted to provide women with real solutions” Nina has trained with top education providers in women’s wellness, fitness, nutrition and massage therapies. She continues to add to her provision and has gained qualifications in other methods, such as scar massage, diastasis (abdominal separation) massage and restoration, and Mummy MOT© services. Nina aims to expand her services to offer a complete service to women throughout all life phases from pre-conception to menopause. Nina is passionate about the care she gives. Women have always been the focus during her career as a midwife. “I have always regarded women to be incredible human beings in everything they are able to do. Women are very resilient individuals. As a mother I can honestly say that the journey to
motherhood and beyond is such a life changing event. I respect the experiences women go through and feel privileged to be able to support women during these times. I also understand that women can find the journey to motherhood a difficult time, with 1 in 6 women experiencing difficulties conceiving a baby”. Nina also supports women in their fertility journey, offering a listening service, massage and reflexology therapies and lifestyle guidance. Nina concludes “I enjoy helping women through their
journey to motherhood, it gives me satisfaction to know that women are prioritising their needs, and ensuring they are healthy and not only to be able to look after their family with more ease, but also to give them the understanding and independence to look after their bodies well into their ‘golden’ years” I want to transform the way women feel about themselves, so they know and appreciate the worth of self-care. The information they gain about themselves, will be knowledge that lasts women for their lifetime, and this is certainly priceless”.

Questions & Answ
What is a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA)? An LPA is a legal document by which you appoint people you trust to make important decisions on your behalf during your lifetime if you are no longer able to do so. If you are unable to or become incapable of managing your affairs, no one, not even your spouse, has an automatic right to make decisions on your behalf.
Aren’t I a bit young to be thinking about making an LPA? When we talk about not being capable of making our own decisions, we immediately think of terrible illnesses such as dementia or Alzheimer’s disease which tend to affect people in the latter stages of their lives. However, younger people take more risks day to day and the fact is that mental capacity can be lost at any age, either suddenly as a result of an illness or accident or after a period of decline. LPAs can be used in happier situations too, such as if you decide to go on a long holiday and you need someone to deal with selling property or managing investments whilst you’re away.
Are there different types of LPA? There are two types of LPA – one for managing money and property and one for making health and welfare decisions. The property and finance LPA allows your attorneys to sign for you and make decisions such as: • Paying your bills and managing your income and finances • Handling your investments • Selling and buying property • Managing or running a business • Speaking on the telephone to your bank, utility companies etc. The health and welfare LPA allows your attorneys to make decisions about life sustaining treatment (i.e. resuscitation, life support etc), gain access to medical information and be involved in decisions concerning: • Where you live and who visits you • The type of care and support you receive • Day to day issues such as your diet, dress or routine • Medical treatment.
What if I am not ready to relinquish control over my own affairs? Most LPAs I make for my clients are not required immediately. We tend to make them and store them safely away in case they are needed in the future. A health and welfare LPA can only be used if you lack mental capacity in the future anyway, but by making one in advance you can have the peace of mind knowing that it is all in place and ready to be used should the need ever arise.

Suffolk Fab40
Summer Adventures
The school year is nearly over and our little dears will soon need entertaining over the summer before we can deliver them back at school again in September and breathe a sigh of relief! Suffolks’ Fab 40 Adventures has provided us with inspiration over the year and the final season, summer, certainly doesn’t fail in delivering some great activities that are completely free and easy to do.
Suffolk’s 10 Summer Adventures The 10 seasonal activities are all tried, tested or suggested by over 400 helpful children, mums, dads, grannies and grandads – so we are confident you will enjoy them. This seasons activities include things to do as a family as well as the odd activity to do alone – we all need some quiet time, whatever our age! You can hide up a tree and spy on the world; see a meteor shower; spot the blue of a kingfisher from a riverside path; find your perfect picnic spot; go fishing for crabs; put a toe in the water down at the stream; take a swim in the sea; simply lay back, look and listen; watch dragonflies hunting over water and discover the beauty of butterflies on a meadowland stroll. You’ll find everything you need to know to complete the 10 Summer Adventures from star gazing instructions, to butterfly spotting sheets and maps to give you ideas of where to go and how to get the most from your visit at:

Young children can sign up from 21 July and this year’s theme is ‘Mischief Makers’, celebrating 80 years of the Beano. The challenge is to read six books throughout the holidays with stickers and incentives on offer, plus it’s an important way of maintaining children’s reading levels. 2. For 10Ҋ18 year olds, libraries will also be running ImagiNation which aims to inspire reading through arts and creative activities. Read a book from the library and ‘react’ to what you read with poetry, a drawing, or a review. Suffolk Libraries will also be hosting digital arts workshops in some libraries for young people and running a competition to win high street vouchers. 3. Parents and children can stock up on books and take them away on holiday Ҋ don’t forget you can borrow up to 20 books and also borrow free eBooks too which are easier to fit in your suitcase!
4. There are plenty of other summer activities and events taking place across the county. 5. It’s free! It’s free and easy to sign up and borrow items with just a small charge for certain activities.
