Family Health & Wellbeing

Boosting your child’s wellbeing: Be Resilient By Huddl Advisor Dr Hazel Harrison Huddl: Support for the parenting journey

www.huddl.uk Being resilient means bouncing back when you encounter challenges, set backs or failures. We all go through times when we struggle, so building our resilience is crucial to helping us cope. One way to build resilience in children is to help them develop a growth mindset. This relates to the belief that our abilities and intelligence can develop with practice, feedback and effort. At the other end of the spectrum is a fixed mindset, the belief that our intelligence is fixed and there isn’t much we can do to change it.

Children with a growth mindset are more likely to try again when they fail at something, and also to attempt to learn how they can improve. Research into this ‘gritty’ quality and growth mindset approach shows that learning from failure is one of the crucial tools for success and resilience. In contrast, children with a fixed mindset tend to give up when they encounter failure, believing that they just don’t have what it takes.

Here are three ways to encourage your child to adopt a growth mindset: 1. Add the word ‘yet’ Changing the way you talk about intelligence can help your child understand that learning is a process, and that our abilities and traits are not fixed from birth. When your child claims ‘I can’t do this’ (whether they’re talking about a new hobby, their homework, or tying a shoelace), say ‘You can’t do it YET’. Adding this tiny word emphasises the learning process.

2. Practise (and fail) with others Trying new things can be scary, but it’s often less scary when you do it with others. As a family, you might decide to try something new and celebrate your failures when it doesn’t work (the 1st, 2nd, or even 99th time!). Children can

learn a lot from hearing adults respond kindly to themselves when things don’t work out – and then from seeing them try again.

3. Find inspirational stories of success and failure With the the Winter Olympics earlier this year, it’s a great time to have conversations about how these athletes are able to achieve such elite levels of performance. Talent alone doesn’t make you an Olympian. You have to be prepared to dedicate years of training, sacrifice many things, and learn to accept – and grow from – failure to achieve these remarkable accomplishments. These conversations about inspirational people and their achievements can help reinforce the growth mindset message.

Make the water a safe and happy environment Give your baby a truly valuable life skill. By Claire Bailey. Owner of Puddle Ducks South Suffolk

Did you know that the majority of childhood drownings occur in water the child could have stood up in; and recent UK statistics show a high proportion occur in garden ponds or around the home, with the 0-4 age group being particularly vulnerable. If these children had had some experience or awareness of water, would the result have been different? Our classes at Puddle Ducks teach children to be safe in water by showing them key life-saving skills in a fun way, appropriate to the age of the children. It’s never too early to introduce your baby to the joys of being in the water, as long as you do it in a loving, caring and safety-conscious manner. Your child will learn to not only enjoy, but also respect water and this has to be one of the most important gifts you can give your child. Our teachers adapt every activity to suit each child. Our baby-led swimming approach ensures that your child’s needs are expertly fulfilled never forcing development, but rather nurturing it to ensure a positive experience and love of swimming.

Puddle Ducks swimming top tips to BE SAFE: • Be prepared

• Safety

• Attitude

If you are planning on joining a class, do your research first; is the teacher qualified, how big are the classes and are the children grouped by ability and age? NHS guidelines state that injections are not required before a baby can go swimming.

Watch your baby at all times! Try not to carry your baby down the steps, if you slipped there is a high chance you’d hit baby’s head. Instead lay your baby on a towel or changing mat (head away from the water) and sit next to them with your feet in the water, lift your baby and lower gently into the water until your shoulders are under the water.

Come with the right attitude, it can be a wonderful time of one-toone attention, skin and eye contact that will instil a love of water for the rest of your child’s life; but only if you are relaxed.

• Equipment Top of the list is a re-usable, washable or disposable swim nappy that’s a good fit around the waist and the legs; a leaking nappy can cause a pool to be closed. Other essentials for your baby are a towel or robe and a hat for the journey home.

• Pool area Slipping on wet surfaces by the pool is just as dangerous as the water itself so teach children to walk not run. Keep swimming pool areas free from tripping hazards.

• Temperature Find a pool that is heated to over 30°C for babies less than six months. Remember babies don’t shiver and can get cold quickly, look for other signs i.e. lips going slightly blue or if they are getting distressed.

• Enjoy and happy swimming!

Barker Gotelee legal Advice: Family Law

Top questions most parents want answered by a family solicitor. Amanda Erskine has been a qualified family solicitor for 6 years, having trained with Barker Gotelee and stayed with the firm on qualification. She answers some of the most common questions asked by separated parents.

should be seen as a completely separate entity and one which should be allowed to continue even if the parents are no longer together in the same family unit.

What is the difference between access, custody and shared parenting?

A biological mother will automatically have PR for any child to whom she gives birth. A biological father will have PR if he was married to the biological mother either when the child was born or subsequently, or he is named on the child’s birth certificate as the father and the child was born after 1 December 2003.

Many separated parents still use terminology such as granting access to children or retaining custody of a child. However, these terms are outdated concepts within the legal world in England and Wales. When discussing arrangements for children most family solicitors now refer to “Shared Parenting” or a “Co-Parenting Plan”. The idea is to encourage parents to work out the most practical arrangements that will ensure a child spends quality time with each parent. It is important that, regardless of how each parent feels about their relationship with the other, the parent-child relationship

Life | Land | Business

What is parental responsibility and how do I get it? Parental responsibility (PR) is the bundle of legal rights that parents can have towards their child. These include the right to make decisions about a child’s upbringing, health and wellbeing. Although having PR gives a parent certain rights, there’s an obligation to exercise those rights in the best interests of the child.

In all other situations, a parent will not have automatic PR for a child but there are a number of ways in which PR can be obtained.

Does a shared care arrangement mean I am guaranteed to see my child for half the week/month/year? The short answer is no. A shared care arrangement or shared parenting plan means that both parents play an active role in bringing up their children despite no longer being together as a couple. Shared care allows a child to spend quality time with each parent in a safe and loving environment. There is no set formula or typical arrangement as every plan/arrangement should be based around the specific needs of the child. Having a shared plan does not automatically mean the child’s time will be divided equally between the parents but having a shared care arrangement allows for more flexibility with the arrangements compared with a court order.

Can I take my child abroad without needing the other parent’s consent?

A common misconception among separated parents is that either parent can take their child abroad on holiday for up to a month without the other’s permission. For the majority of parents who have been able to negotiate a shared care arrangement for their child without the use of the court this is not the case. If the parents do not have a court order and one wants to take the child abroad for a holiday, they will need the consent of every adult who has parental responsibility for the child. The most important factor to consider in these circumstances is whether the holiday is in the children’s best interests. The answer will usually be yes as the children will experience a different culture and spend extended quality time with one parent or with extended family who may live abroad, whilst the parent staying behind can have an extended rest. A slightly different situation exists for parents who have been through court. If parents already have a court order in place regulating the arrangements for the child (known as a Child Arrangements Order), the order usually records which parent the child will live with. That parent will be allowed to take the child out of the jurisdiction of England and Wales for up to a month without the other parent’s consent.

Families Suffolk Party Guide

Party P lanning

Suffolk mum, children’s entertainer and professional Face Painter Sammy Moroney owner of ShoeEnts gives her TOP TIPS and advice for planning children’s parties... My first piece of advice is plan well in advance. You can never be too organised! The party date will soon creep up on you, so around 3-6 months before you want to start thinking about setting a date. Select & book a venue for your chosen date & times. When booking bear in mind you will need at least 1 hour before & after for setting up and packing down. The halls get snapped up fast especially in the spring/summer months. Look into village halls they are spacious and reasonably priced for hire. Of course there is also the options of home/garden parties or play centres. Decide if you are having a themed party or not. Some examples of themes are: ∞ superheroes ∞ princesses ∞ pirates ∞ character theme/favourite tv/film. Entertainment: if booking a children’s entertainer/ facepainter/discos/bouncy castles/soft play, book well in advance around the time you book venue, most take deposits. Invitations: decide who you want to attend the party. You will want to give these out about 6 weeks before your party date. Party decorations/party bits: buy as you go along in coming months this will save you money in the long run especially on the lead up to the party with having to buy presents etc as well. You also want to decide if you are going to do lunch boxes/hot food/buffet spread. Party bags or sweet cones are the most common things to hand out at the end of party. You can buy most bits for these online or in locals shops. Cupcakes/cake pops or biscuits are also a hit. Cake options: having one made? Look into cake makers and book in early. Shop bought, or homemade. 1-2 weeks before the party date check to make sure who can make the party before you buy food/drink etc. Don’t forget that tea/coffee & sugar for the grown ups! Check in with venue, entertainment & cake makers to make sure all is still ok. Party games/prizes: if not having a children’s entertainer look into party games you can play to keep them occupied and remember to get prizes for the winners. Night before party prep as much food as you can, this will make life less stressful on the morning of the party. To find out more about Sammy’s facepainting and children’s party entertainment services visit her facebook page:

How to theme a party... Choosing a party theme can sometimes be challenging, especially if a child is only interested in video games. Don’t despair – there is a theme for absolutely anything. Sarah-Marie Underhay, Mum of 2 and owner of Duck in Boots in Sudbury offers some very valuable advice... The easiest way to portray your theme is with a craft party. Craft parties are great for all ages, male and female, and can generate some fantastic keepsakes and something unique for the party bags! What do they like? Dinosaurs or unicorns are easy to plan, but perhaps they just have a favourite colour or food. If someone loves pizza, go Italian in style from the buffet to your colours; crafts could include gondolas, towers and collage pizzas. Can’t get them off their Xbox? How about making controllers from clay or water beads? Use green and black for a retro feel, or white and green in line with modern machines.

www.facebook.com/shoe.ents 10

Families Suffolk: Issue 41

Simplicity is key. If you get the basic scene right, you don’t have to go overboard. Little touches work just as well, from shaped sandwiches to coloured toppings. Take “she’s gonna pop” or “movies” as an example – popcorn sets these themes off to perfection but are subtle and inexpensive. Unicorns only need sparkle and colour - mermaids just greens, blues and purples, to set the scene. Still struggling? Then go with the season: spring – erupt with colour; summer parties with strawberries and cream; autumn – rustic colours and bobbing for apples; winter – Nordic and spiced fruit. Think outside the box – themed parties are only limited by your imagination!

Parent Testimonial... “My daughter had her 7th birthday party on 17th December at Glass and Craft, Kersey Mill. All I can say is was amazing!! The whole party from start to finish was fantastic, well organised and nothing was too much trouble. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The children all stuffed a lovely teddy from a great choice of bears for boys and girls and then painted a glass which had the design of the birthday girl’s choice and each child’s name on the glass. Again nothing was too much trouble as the two boys, both of different ages, were able to have different designs suitable to them. Thank you for a lovely party, we will be back again soon”. www.glassandcraft.co.uk | 01473 517404

Families Suffolk Party Guide

Good Party Etiquette? Is there such a thing? By Andrew Campbell

Whether you are throwing a party for your child or sending them off to their friend’s birthday celebration, finding your way around the do’s and don’ts of children’s birthday parties has become akin to navigating a war zone. Here we tackle a few of the thorny issues that seem to crop up every year.

Who gets Invited? Your child has already been to three parties this year where the entire class was invited. But the thought of 30 small people bouncing off walls makes you break out in sweat. Remember “entire class” parties are your choice – you don’t have to give them just to keep other parents happy. The reality is that children WILL be happy with a small gathering so long as it feels special to them. Give invites to just their best friends and family and you’ll find the whole experience a whole lot easier.

Be Subtle about Invitations Who is and isn’t invited to a party is guaranteed to cause playground ructions, so be tactful. Unless you’re inviting the whole class, don’t start handing invitations out as the kids are lining up to go into school; you may end up being called in by the teacher who spent the first class consoling those not on the list.

Be Sure to RSVP Planning a children’s party is stressful enough without having to chase people who haven’t replied. Replying promptly will earn you lots of gold stars with the party child’s parents, so just do it. And whatever you do, do NOT turn up on the day without RSVPing.

Check Before you Take Siblings Don’t assume no one will mind if a younger or older sibling tags along. When the entertainer has a strict limit on

numbers and the party parents have worked out exactly how many fairy cakes they need, added extras can cause a real headache. So make sure you check beforehand.

Presents DEFINITELY Required As adults we may think that when it comes to parties, presence is better than presents. But as far as kids are concerned, it’s all about the gifts. Yes, we know the birthday girl doesn’t NEED another cheap and nasty Disney figurine that’ll last about 10 minutes, but turn up empty-handed at your peril.

Party Bags – really? All kids love to leave events with mementoes but if you really don’t fancy party bags, then why not have a piñata instead? Buy some cute but cheap paper bags, and then the children can stuff them with whatever they grabbed from the piñata themselves.

familiesonline.co.uk

Thank-you Notes? This is obviously a personal choice but it’s a nice thing to do with your child once the chaos of their birthday has faded. Taking some quiet time to remember what gifts your child received and who came to the party can be a really fun activity and assures your child doesn’t take the whole experience for granted.

Give a Contact Number Before you hotfoot it out of the door, make sure the party host has your contact number. If your child starts throwing up over their playmates and you’re incommunicado then you can bet they won’t be invited next year. And if you’re the host, make sure you get phone details from all parents or you may be stuck with overwrought Olivia for a LOT longer than you bargained for. Families Suffolk: Issue 41

Private Client Legal Advice from Barker Gotelee

Myths about Wills There are many misconceptions about making a Will, most of which put people off making Wills in the first place Lindsey Sharples, a Solicitor at Barker Gotelee, says: “making a Will need not be a complicated, stressful or daunting process. Most of my clients remark that making a Will was not as bad as they were expecting and express relief at having set out their wishes very clearly in writing”. It may surprise you to know that all of the following statements are false: A homemade Will kit is good enough. In many cases homemade Will kits create more problems than they solve; this is good for lawyers but not so good for your beneficiaries. Making a Will need not be expensive but it is important to instruct someone who is legally qualified to draft your Will.

I don’t need to make a Will because I am married so my husband/wife will receive my entire estate when I die anyway. This is not necessarily true and depends on your net worth when you die; if you have children and die intestate (without a valid Will) your husband/wife will inherit a certain value in your estate outright but only an interest in half of the remainder. This means that your husband/ wife will not automatically receive your entire estate outright as you may intend.

I have a common law spouse so everything will automatically go to her Many people wrongly assume that living with a partner for several years creates a common law marriage; this is not true. If an unmarried person dies intestate then

the intestacy rules dictate who inherits their estate. If you are not married but have children, then the rules of intestacy mean that your estate would be divided equally between your children, to the exclusion of your partner.

Getting married/ remarried/divorced won’t affect my Will. When you get married, any previous Wills you have written become invalid, unless your Will refers to your forthcoming marriage. If you are engaged to be married you do not need to wait until you get married to make Wills; you can make Wills now and decide whether they come into effect straightaway and remain valid despite your marriage or whether they only come into effect once you are married. Your Will is not invalidated on divorce but any benefit that your ex-husband/ex-wife would have received from your Will would be passed onto other beneficiaries. If you are in the process of getting divorced then I recommend you review any existing Will or put a new Will in place dealing with your new situation.

Get in Touch

I don’t need to make a Will because my estate is not very big.

At Barker Gotelee we recognise that many reasons may put people off making, or reviewing a Will. We are here to make the process as easy and cost effective as possible for you so why not get in touch.

Wills do more than distribute assets after your death. They can also be used to distribute sentimental items to specific people or designate guardians or trustees for minor children.

Early Years: amazing mums

Becoming a Mum again 10 years on

That Moment... Families Suffolk have been speaking to Katherine Vince, Suffolk Mum and founder of Ipswich and Colchester Sling Library about what motivated her to set up this valuable service. Here is what she had to say...

Suffolk Mum and Business Woman Erin Freeman shares with Familes Suffolk her very honest account of becoming a new mum again. Nearing 40 the last thing I thought I would be is pregnant! But low and behold I was!!! I already had a 10 year old, I wasn’t sure if I would be able to cope with having a baby in the house again. So many thoughts went through my head, it took me the full nine months of my pregnancy to even feel like the pregnancy was real. In so many ways having a baby 10 years after my first was like being a first time mum. The biggest shock to me was how much had changed in 10 years! From Hypnobirthing to baby swim classes, baby sensory and so much more. There really is so much more available to parents than there was 10 years ago. It has been enjoyable getting to experience the changes, and I am very grateful for the amount of support that is out there now for new mums (whether it is your first time, second or third). I suffer from depression, in fact I was working hard at recovering from a breakdown when I found out I was pregnant. For me postnatal depression (PND) is a reality, it is a daily battle to keep on top of my mental health. I speak about it in this article because it is important for mum’s to know that it happens and there nothing to be ashamed of. Support is out there with PANDAS, Suffolk Mind. If you are struggling with PND, reach out to them, reach out to a friend, family member or me. Having such an age gap between my children is actually pretty amazing. My oldest is such a great little helper and loves his little brother. The best thing about the age gap is my oldest is old enough to understand that the baby needs my attention. The boys have such an amazing bond, and I can only put it down to the fact that when I was pregnant my son spoke to the baby all the time. During my first pregnancy I only had the antenatal classes offered by the NHS, this time around I wanted to be as prepared as possible so I took 1:1 Hypno-birthing classes with the amazing Vicky from Inner Calm Birth. It was so beneficial to my husband as well, even though we had both been through the whole giving birth experience we were both very rusty! I felt totally empowered after completing the hypno-birthing classes and they also help me bond with the baby and start to accept that I was actually pregnant again. I highly recommend taking a hypno-birthing class. I could not imagine our family without our latest addition. Balancing my business and family life has become a little trickier, but I am excited to get stuck back in.

My first experiences of carrying my babies were like many with an older style Baby Bjorn, and sadly like many I didn’t carry for long. With my third baby the need for a carrier was magnified due to having a toddler to care for and a baby that did not want to be put down! Luckily for me I had a good friend in a similar situation who lent me her Close Caboo which was a life saver, with this carrier I could wear my baby securely which made him much more settled and I could still play with my toddler. Having my eyes opened to the fact that not all carriers were the same meant I found a local Sling Library and tried a few other options, Woven wraps soon became my obsession! In 2013 I started my own Sling Library through my love of carrying and desire to create an inviting space for new mums and dads to come and begin their journey. We now have four meets a month in Colchester and Ipswich, run regular workshops and

offer one to one home consultations all with the help of my amazing team of fully trained volunteers. With around 200 carriers comprising of many different styles we are sure that we can find one to suit everyone, as we have found over the years there really isn’t one carrier that fits all. My advice for new parent and parents to be when it comes to carriers would be to do some research and where possible attend a Sling Library to try a few options, as buying a carrier can be a costly investment so you really do want to find the best one for you and your baby. My favourite part of running the Sling Library meets is when a parent tries a carrier with their new baby and have ‘that moment’ the one when they realise it is possible to carry their baby and have that hands-free feeling, whether they want to hang the washing out, walk the dog or just make a cup of tea! It really is a special moment.

Ipswich and Colchester Sling Library Spreading the ___ love for carrying Are you confused by all the options?

Our Experts are here to help... We hold 4 sling library's every month and offer workshops and home consultation.

Family Social

How Much Does Gender Matter? By Dr Lucy Maddox

We are expert at training our children to be boys and girls. In fact, we’d have to work hard to get better at this! From the moment a baby is conceived, its sex is determined and it will be exposed to an entirely different menu of hormonal influences, both in utero and beyond. It’s the balance of different hormones - androgens (male hormones) and oestrogens and progesterones (female hormones) - which result in the differentiation of physical characteristics and genitalia between boys and girls. Some people also use these sex differences to explain differences in behaviour. However, research suggests that the impact of sex differences on behaviour is massively exaggerated. Whilst it is tempting to attribute differences in behaviour between girls and boys to their biology, there is not good evidence to back this up. Christia Spears Brown, Professor at the University of Kentucky, studies sex differences. She says “Of course, behavioural differences do exist. Boys, as infants, are a little more active and a little more impulsive than girls and throw a ball with greater velocity and power. In childhood, boys have better body image than girls, and more confidence in their maths ability (although they don’t differ in actual maths ability). However, these differences may well be due to socialisation - to boys being encouraged to practise ball-throwing more and to girls picking up a message that “girls aren’t good at maths.”

behave in different ways depending on their biological sex. From birth, children are surrounded by messages from advertising, film and television and clothes and toys. There may well be differences in the way boys and girls behave, but they are often very likely to be influenced by what they have experienced as they grow. Recognition of biological sex happens early. Even by the age of 1 year, children begin to have the ability to distinguish between male and female faces if there are gender-related cues. By age 3, girls and boys have a sense of their own gender identity. Between 3 and 6 years old, children develop the idea of gender constancy - the idea that someone’s biological sex doesn’t change and that you can’t be both a girl and a boy.

If there aren’t major behavioural differences between boys and girls, then why do we think there are?

Stereotypes about gender also form early: ideas about expected clothes, play and behaviour are already around before children reach age 6 years. One study showed boys tending to prefer assertive character traits and girls tending to value affiliative traits which enhance the ability to get on with others.

We all have a natural tendency to see things that back up our existing beliefs: a confirmation bias. This makes it easy for us to see differences as related to biological sex, when they might just be individual differences in personality.

The effects of these roots, laid down so very early on, probably in the messages boys and girls have been given, arguably manifest in typical adult male and female styles of interaction at work and in relationships.

Importantly, society tends to train children from a very early age to

It’s well worth thinking about our own ideas about gender, the scripts we

20

Families Suffolk: Issue 41

have been given by our families and by society around us about what is “boy behaviour” and “girl behaviour.” If we can hold up our inherited beliefs to the light then there is some hope of us being able to challenge or champion them, to allow for curiosity about other cultures, families and ways of being. This might also create more space for our children to be able to do, say, feel and be what they are, whatever their biology.

What can we do to help free children from gender constraints? Professor Spears Brown thinks that there are three main things: Make gender less relevant to everyday life, (e.g. no need to say “hello boys and girls” - just say “hello everyone”). Correct children and other adults when they fall into the trap of gender stereotypes, (e.g. how often do we praise girls for looking nice and praise boys for being strong?) Focus on buying children toys that foster the traits we want to encourage, rather than buying toys that are supposed to be for a particular sex. For more on gender and other child development topics, Dr Lucy Maddox’s book “Blueprint: How Our Childhood Makes Us Who We Are” is available from Amazon at £14.99.
