News and Views BPAs banished from baby bottles The European Commission has finally announced a ban on the use of bisphenol-A (BPA) plastics in baby bottles, which will come into effect during 2011. The controversial chemical is still currently used in some baby bottles sold in the UK, although many brands have stopped using it. There is evidence to suggest it can interfere with healthy growth and body functions, mimicking the effect of the hormone oestrogen in the body, to which babies are particularly vulnerable. “We have been calling for a UK ban on selling baby bottles containing bisphenol-A plastics for several years,” says Belinda Phipps of the NCT, “and are thrilled their import and sale will soon be outlawed across the EU. When you put hot liquids into a bottle containing BPA, particularly as the bottle gets older and more scratched, the chemical can leach out of the plastic and be absorbed into the baby’s body.” www.nct.org.uk.

Buy & Sell Baby Items Locally Just after Christmas can be as good a time as any to have a good clear out – after all you need space for all those new toys! But throwing away old toys or baby stuff that has more life in it seems a bit of a waste, plus if you can make a bit of cash so much the better. Families contributor Sarah Husselmann says “at a local level, I’ve discovered that www.nappyvalley.co.uk is a fantastic way to sell items. Placing an add costs £2, or £1 per ad if you place 5 or more ads. The website is easy to use and ads stay active for three months. Within the first few weeks I’d sold two of my five items and nearly three months later I have only one item remaining. Everything about the process is efficient – if somebody is interested in buying one of your items they drop you an email via the site and you agree a convenient place to meet.” Joanne Pearce, founder of the site, says, “The best selling items are; Bugaboo pushchairs, Phil & Teds double buggies, Bumbo seats, Stokke highchairs, play pens, stairgates and cots.”

Parenting
Behaviour, Consequences and Discipline by Ali McClure Parenting and Education Consultant
C
hildren’s behaviour…as parents and people who care about children we all know how this impacts on our lives. We also know about the consequences of a person’s actions. Many of us think we have a fair grasp of discipline but what does discipline actually mean to you? There are many different definitions but for me the most important aspect of discipline is that discipline goes hand in hand with learning, (just as the disciples in biblical times learned from Jesus.) I have a question for you… how often, when a child has behaved inappropriately, does the exchange that follows actually take that opportunity to help them to learn. How often does it help the child to question their own behaviour and lay the paths for a more appropriate action next time? I’m not talking about the old fashioned, often harsh, kind of teaching and learning as represented by phrases such as: ‘That’ll teach them’ or ‘He’ll soon learn’. I’m talking about discipline that helps a child to see the consequences of their action, their impact on others and ways that this action may be avoided or amended for a more positive outcome in the future. If we imagine ourselves alongside our child, guiding them and supporting them then our response to their behaviour will be just that. It will be guiding and supporting. Yes, we do need to be firm and consistent. There are certainly times when ‘no’ has to mean ‘no’ and it is important that
children understand, especially where safety is concerned. However, there are also times when it works better to be a little less authoritarian and hold back from being judgemental. We can work with the child to help them reflect on their behaviour and to agree an appropriate consequence. Wherever possible consequences should be matched to the misdemeanour, after all that’s the way it works in real life; If you break something it is down to you to repair it. If you lose something it is your responsibility to replace it, or to go without, if you make a mess you have to clear it up. On the other hand, if you work hard at something the result can make you and others feel proud and usually to lead to positive outcomes. As our children mature, with our help, they learn about these consequences and therefore learn to think a little more and take a little more care before they act. These things may seem like a tall order if your child is still quite young but with caring respectful discipline, over time, this really can happen. One thing we need to be sure of, especially if we have younger children, is that we are not expecting our child to do something that they are not yet ready for. Just because the other children in the toddler group can pour blackcurrant juice without spilling or most of the children in their class can make a beautiful, home-made card without sticking it to their clothes does not necessarily mean that your child is being disobedient if these things do not fall naturally into their skill set. We need to help youngsters by building in success and praising them when they make steps towards these challenging tasks, however small. We need to avoid the temptation to compare them with others and focus in on celebrating what our child is good at. We most certainly must avoid humiliating them in front of others. All this will help them build greater confidence and self-esteem which in turn will result in their needing to behave in ways that demand our negative attention less frequently.
For happier times together we need to think of: Realistic…Choose which BEHAVIOURS are important for us to address Results…Be sure the CONSEQUENCES are appropriate and linked to the actions Respect… In DISCIPLINE, know that every encounter with our child shows respect and is an opportunity to learn, for them and for us! Ali McClure is an experienced Parenting and Education Consultant and mother of three children. Her book ‘Making it Better for Boys’ has been widely acclaimed by parents, teachers and early years practitioners. She offers training days and consultancy for schools and children’s settings and one to one parent coaching. Ali’s work inspires and empowers those who care about children, emphasising enjoyment and positive relationships for their learning and future. The course ‘Behaviour Consequences and Discipline’ is being run for parents and carers on Wednesday 16th February 2011 from 8pm to 10pm in Woking. ‘Understanding Boys’ is on Wednesday 9th March 2011. 1 Each course costs £21 with discount for early booking. Parenting
So how does it work? Neuro is the bit in our head, the self talk, the
limiting beliefs such as ‘I can’t….’ and the way we think and feel about what we experience.
Linguistic is what we say, our communication
patterns.
NLP offers us the opportunity to show children by our own behaviour how to overcome setbacks and limiting beliefs, access our strengths and skills and apply them to where we need them and how to get on with people from all walks of life.
regardless of whether or not they serve us well.
What does it offer to us as parents? From birth our babies mimic us and we them. We make faces at each other, make funny noises and movements with our hands to encourage them to respond and connect with us. As they get older they copy other things we do, mannerisms and expressions. They learn what your approval looks, sounds and feels like and they want to get it because this gives us both a warm feeling. They naturally match us and this is a learning process. When they can’t do something, they don’t give up, they have another go and eventually they all walk, talk and eat as we do. We can use this natural process to build our parenting skills because we are the ‘model’ for our children. What they do and say they have seen in us so when they do something we don’t like the question is, how do we do this ourselves? What could we do differently that would show them what behaviour we do want from them? Children naturally learn from feedback and don’t feel a failure when they fall over as they learn to walk and yet we have teenagers who have no confidence. So what happens between babyhood and teenage years that changes their response to setbacks?

How can we use NLP as parents? NLP has a number of very useful ‘ground rules’ that if we apply ourselves, we will be leading by example. Here are a few of them.
1.
Programming is the patterns we repeat
The Sur rey
NLP or Neuro Linguistic Programming has been used in Industry for leadership and management training for many years and is now being adopted by parents all over the world to help them build parenting skills. Surely if it has been successful in business for building confidence, rapport, negotiating skills and conflict resolution then we need it as parents too!

NLP for Parents
If you always do what you’ve always done you will always get what you’ve always got – in other words, if you aren’t getting the result you want, do something different.
2.
You have all the resources you need – whatever skill you need now you have either in the past or in another area of your life, so we need to find it and use it now. If you really don’t believe you have the skill, find someone who does, and copy it.
Are you completely exhausted? Does your baby need settling at night? Do you need help with sleep training? Get yourself a good night’s sleep! Call on our experienced team of Night Nannies. Tel: 07800 843618 www.nightnannies.com louise@nightnannies.com
3.
There is no failure only feedback – setbacks are there to learn from so next time you do something different.
4.
The map is not the territory – how you see the world is unique to you and based on your experiences, values and beliefs. Be curious about other people’s map in order to build rapport and connect with them.
5.
The person with the most flexibility controls the system – this means that if you exercise choice as to how you respond then you are more likely to achieve your desirable outcome. Knowledge of NLP internal representations (Visual Auditory and Kinaesthetic) as well as the personality types enables you to match and connect with the other person and give you the opportunity to influence them. Judy Bartkowiak is an NLP therapist based at The Sunshine Clinic, Send, Woking. You can make an appointment with her on 01628 660618. Holidays
Family Holidays Self catering can often be the best option when holidaying with children. Many holiday providers are realising that this is what parents want and providing properties with everything you need to make it a fun and easy holiday - from baby equipment to children’s entertainment. Here is a selection of truly family friendly holiday options.
Libbear Barton - Devon Libbear Barton is an idyllic small country estate located in North Devon, with a range of award winning self catering accommodation and superb leisure facilities on site. There is a large luxury 5 star farmhouse (sleeping up to 14, plus cots, in 6 bedrooms) and three self-catering holiday cottages, (each sleeping 8 people, plus cots), all located in a breath taking location of a private woodland. The cottages are themed around the Wind in The Willows and all have their own distinctive characters. Libbear Barton also includes a well equipped gym, large indoor swimming pool, sauna, games room, a private woodland, picnic areas, children’s play area and a well-stocked fishing lake. Owner Debbie Cousins says “We know what it’s like having to pack ‘everything’ for the little ones in the family, so we decided to make Libbear Barton one of the top baby friendly facilities in the UK. Each of the cottages & farmhouse contain strollers, high chairs, sterilising equipment, cots, play pens, stair gates and a range of other infant equipment needed to ensure that everyone has a wonderful holiday.” The surrounding area, like the accommodation has plenty on offer for everyone. Those looking to spend a day or two at the beach won’t be disappointed with the stunning coast of North Devon and Cornwall within 30 minutes drive with plenty to choose from including fantastic sandy beaches and hidden coves. Visit www.FamilyFriendlyDevon.com or call 0791 809 0081.
La Garenne - France “The kids have fun and parents can relax and enjoy the peace. This is what La Garenne is all about” says owner Dorte. In the Charente Maritime region of France, La Garenne consists of 6 stylish gites fully equipped for a fantastic family holiday . What makes this place so special is the setup of all the gites and the safety within the walled garden. Each of the gites has a patio facing the communal walled garden with toys, fully fenced swimming pool, climbing tree, tree swings, slides and trampoline. There is also a small heated toddler and baby pool. Children have freedom to run around and have fun while parents have a chance to relax and enjoy the sun, a book and good food. There are lots of activities at La Garenne such as a kids club for the over 3’s, pottery painting classes and welcome BBQ. You can also book babysitting if you want to go out. Arrivals meal can be ordered and three evenings a week you can order a delicious 3 course meal to enjoy while the children play or are safely tucked up in bed. The weather is warm throughout May to October as this region is the second sunniest in France.

There are several properties in the family friendly resort of Pernera which has everything on your doorstep – cafes, restaurants, beaches, a water park, snorkeling, boat trips – so you won’t necessarily need to hire a car. The sandy bays are perfect for families and there’s lots of shallow water for younger ones to paddle in. All of the information was accurate. The villa was as per the picture(s) and the service provided by the villa representatives, out in Cyprus, could not have been more helpful and courteous. Joanna Moorhead gives us some tips on how to save on your family holiday Bargain-hunt: There are bargains around on the holiday front this year...and as usual, the trick is either to book well ahead, or to wait until the very last minute.
Holiday with another family: This can make your outlay a lot cheaper, because the costs will be divided in two. The cheapest thing to do is stay in the UK or to go to France or somewhere else by ferry, since that’s the cheapest way to travel. Look for bargains like La Blanchere in the Vendee region of France – it’s a four-bed farmhouse set in a twoacre garden with a games barn and an above-ground swimming pool. It’s available for just £700 a week in high season – so for two families sharing, that’s quite a bargain. For more information, see http://www. recommendedfamilyholidays.com/ top25places.shtml
Go somewhere unfashionable: For 2011, for example, Mexico isn’t looking like the hottest holiday destination – but I was there last summer with my family for a fortnight, and though Mexico is a country with problems, those problems are light years away from your all-inclusive hotel on the Yucatan peninsula. We stayed at Club Med in Cancun, which was superlative – it’s got the best position on the Cancun holiday strip, it’s well away from the business of the town, the food is delicious and even our older children enjoyed the teen hang-out. Plus there’s watersports, children’s clubs and childcare, pretty views and a great beach. For us, Mexico was a family holiday of a lifetime and given that the Yucatan is packed with allinclusive hotels, and that it’s not had a great press of late, it should be a great place to get a lot more for your (considerable) outlay in summer 2011. Nurseries
By Robina Cowan
Apart from you of course, do nurseries offer the best childcare? That depends on what would suit your child – and finding a good nursery. If your child would thrive on the constant stimulation of other children and adults they trust, using a wide range of toys and outdoor facilities then the answer is probably yes. Other advantages include year-round care and the experience of qualified staff, which can be particularly reassuring for first-time parents.
the pros:
the pros:
* Some parents feel uneasy about leaving their baby in sole care, no matter how well-qualified that person is. It’s reassuring to know that nursery staff can safely take breaks, and that you are covered if a member of staff is off sick.
* Often smaller scale with a personal touch, and the nursery head is usually involved in the running of the school.
* Consistency - your child can stay in the same environment from the day you go back to work until they start school.
* Some offer wrap-around care but are generally open only for school hours so you will need help to pick up and collect if you are at work.
whe en and d where e to o st tart
* Social environment - children who attend nursery can find it easier to settle into school routines when they join reception classes.
help p wit th the cos sts
Nurseries with the best reputations tend to be hot property, and baby units are more scarce than places for 2-5 year-olds, so start looking well ahead of the time you’ll need a place, and join a waiting list if necessary. Some mothers start while they are still pregnant; others wait until their child is a babe in arms and they have a better idea of what they need. If you don’t know of any local nurseries, try our advertisers - they’re here because they want you to know about them. Otherwise, the Families Information Service can supply a list of registered childcarers in your area by phone on 0800 2346 346 and online at www.direct.gov.uk/childcare. There is also a list of nurseries and pre-schools at www.FamiliesSurreyWest.co.uk/nurseries
your r chil ld’s s nee eds Once you’ve drawn up a shortlist of the nurseries you are considering, go and look around and ask lots of questions to see if they would suit your child. Although all nurseries follow Ofsted government guidelines, there is room for interpretation in the way the childcare and learning are delivered. For example, private nurseries might serve organic, freshly cooked meals or include additional activities such as dancing, French and outings. Consider issues such as your child’s daily routine (nap times, type of food provided etc), staff qualifications and experience, staff to child ratios and what the staff turnover is like. Check that you are happy with the range of toys and equipment available, cleanliness of the premises, security, the policy on discipline and late collections. Ask to see the latest Ofsted report or read it online. Find out if there are any extra charges for nappies, meals, certain activities and the cost of the deposit to go on the waiting list. Factor in the time it will take you to travel to and from the nursery, probably during rush hour. After all this, the most important thing is to absorb the atmosphere and look at whether the children are relaxed and happy, and members of staff are responsive and caring.

the cons: * Some parents feel uncomfortable because playtime, naps and meals are at more or less set times. Also you’ll need backup care when your child is unwell or if you’re late to collect. nursery classes in schools A first step into school, although a school nursery place does not automatically guarantee a place in reception. the pros: * Convenient if you are already dropping siblings at the school. * Stimulation - some children are ready for school earlier than others and readily take to structured, educational play. the cons: * Sessions tend to be just three hours which is not practical if you are looking for full time care. pre-schools and playgroups The Preschool Learning Alliance is one of the largest providers of quality childcare in England, offering a wide choice of settings from preschools and baby and toddler groups to full daycare places in nurseries and children’s centres. the pros: * Parents are encouraged to be active members, so you can be more involved in your child’s care. * Small scale settings can be less daunting for shy children. the cons: * Tend to be community operations so don’t expect glamorous premises. You may need additional care if you work full time although wrap around hours are available in some settings. private nursery schools Stimulation - by two and a half most children benefit from some kind of pre-school environment. They learn without knowing it while using letters, shapes and numbers, looking at books and expressing themselves through making things, drawing and singing.
the cons:
Nursery fees vary greatly, depending on location, demand and what is offered, but can be from around £100 to over £200 a week. Local authorities receive government funding so they can offer 15 hours a week of early years education to all three and four year-olds from the term after their third birthday. If you choose a nursery which costs more than the funding or you need more hours, you top up the difference. Child tax credits and working tax credits are available to help with childcare costs. From April 2011, the ‘child’ element of the child tax credit will be increased for families earning up to £16,190 a year with an above-inflation increase. At the same time though, families earning over £41,400 will no longer be eligible for the full tax credit. Some employers offer childcare vouchers which staff can opt to receive instead of part of their salary. Parents can save up to £1000 a year by reducing their income tax and national insurance contributions.

Boost your future earnings A new report claims that having a good nursery teacher can increase your earning capacity in later years by as much as £10,000. Researchers have found that pupils with an excellent nursery education went on to earn more than their peers from similar backgrounds whose earlyyears teaching was less effective. The study also showed that pupils who learnt more at this early stage were more likely to go on to university than their peers. Chris Davis, of the National Primary Headteachers’ Association, added, “The influence of early years on a child’s long-term education is crucial. The better the experience of the child pre-five, the better value you will get from them post- five.”

Volunteering
It’s Official: Volunteering is good for you! By Sam Hannay
A systematic research review paper was published by the Lampeter University, Wales, which highlights a number of health benefits linked to volunteering. However, I don’t believe it takes a scientist to come to the conclusion that doing any form of volunteering can make us feel good, both in terms of our physical and emotional wellbeing. Having both trained volunteers and been one myself for a number of years, I would like to share with you some thoughts about the fantastic and often underused opportunities that volunteering can bring. Margaret Mead, an American Anthropologist said “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” Volunteers can do anything! In various settings and circumstances around the world there are volunteer doctors, cleaners, cooks, lawyers, gardeners, engineers . . . the list is virtually endless. Many organisations are entirely run by volunteers, or have volunteer management committees and it can be said that volunteers are the lifeblood of any charity organisation.
with the ability to share their experiences with others or pass along much needed skills, again promoting feelings of self-worth. Volunteer management committees provide a platform for decision making, financial responsibility, publicity and fundraising, event management and many other highly skilled, team roles. Indeed, having appropriately skilled and more importantly, motivated individuals, are essential to the success of many charity organisations. If you are considering a volunteer role, it’s useful to bear in mind the reasons why you are doing it so the organisation is aware of what you are looking to gain from the experience and can provide you with the resources and support necessary. So whether you want to work with children, adults or animals, there are numerous organisations in our area desperate to fill volunteer roles with enthusiastic and motivated individuals. Dolly from the Lockwood Donkey Centre
So why do people volunteer? use volunteering as a way of meeting people and developing a valuable social network. Volunteering promotes social support and interaction and can provide an opportunity to use skills in a different environment or simply get out of the house for some physical activity.
volunteering can be a fantastic way to acquire new skills and learning, whether someone is trying to gain experience in a new field, demonstrate their commitment to a particular role or establish a route back into the workplace. Employers value volunteer work as highly as paid experience, particularly as it demonstrates commitment and motivation.
• Personal satisfaction –
volunteering offers an extensive choice of activities which can generally be fitted around people’s work and family lives. Some people use the experience of volunteering as a way to gain challenge and achievement which may be lacking in their paid roles. A volunteer role may also offer the opportunity to satisfy a life-long desire or work in a field that is unavailable to them in a paid capacity.
• To share experience or skills - volunteer roles can provide people
The National Trust is another organisation that relies on volunteer help - activities could include: gardening, helping run events or conservation cleaning or house stewarding. Alternatively you could use some of your specialist skills such as education or marketing. For more information about how you can help or to find out about National Trust local volunteer open days contact se.volunteering@nationaltrust.org.uk or call 01372 453401.
Other Useful contacts:
• Feel-good factor – volunteering
• Personal development –
All branches of the NCT are always looking for volunteers for a range of roles so if your local branch isn’t mentioned here, or you’d like to help out on an ad hoc basis rather than have a specific position, please contact your local branch - if their details aren’t mentioned here visit www.nct.org.uk - it’s a great way to meet other local parents.
The Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford is always looking for volunteers for a range of roles such as helping with the trolley round to wards, clerical support, welcoming patients and visitors to the hospital and much more. For details on how you can get involved call Chrissie Beard on 01483 464 847 or email chrissie.beard@nhs.net.
• Social contact – many people
can offer us the feeling that we are a significant part of the world around us and that people notice, care about and value our existence. People see volunteering as an effective use of spare time, when they can contribute to their community and ‘give something back’ to society, particularly as society values volunteer roles. Volunteering is often seen as a way to help others – people or animals - less fortunate than ourselves which contributes to a feeling of self-worth.
The Guildford NCT branch are looking for the following volunteer positions: Branch Chair, General Newsletter Editor, Co-ordination of Newsletter Distribution and Nearly New Sales Team members - if you would be interested in helping in any of these roles please contact info@ nctguildford.org.uk for more details.
One such organisation is the NCT (National Childbirth Trust) who are currently looking for individuals to join their team of volunteers. The Haslemere & Midhurst branch has the following vacancies: Volunteers to join the team of Small Talk co-ordinators (Small Talk is a weekly drop-in for mums and carers with babies from 6 months to toddler), Volunteers to join the rota of helpers at Baby Talk, their weekly drop-in for mums and carers with babies up to 6 months, Liphook parent contact – to contact new parents in the Liphook area and host a coffee morning once a month in the area, Event Assistant Volunteers – to help out at various local fundraising events such as the Nearly New Sale, Tea Parties, Christmas Parties etc. and a Volunteer Co-ordinator – to maintain a list of volunteers who can be called upon to help out at various fundraising events throughout the year. Please email Annalisa on a.alexander@imperial. ac.uk for further details about these roles. The Farnham and Aldershot branch of the NCT has the volunteer role of Parent Support Co-ordinator available. The Parent Support Coordinator is the organiser of the branch parent support system, the main contact for parents and health/children’s services professionals regarding the services and support on offer and is the link with branch specialist workers. The branch is also looking for someone to take on the role of Maternity Services Representative. If you are interested in either role or would like more information, please contact Tracy Parry on 0789 4064667 or tracyaparry@gmail.com.
