Mrs Norville, the Headmistress commented, “We are thrilled to now offer families the option of a pre-school environment with the flexibility of all year-round care. We look to inspire imaginations and create capable learners to help prepare children for a positive and happy transition to the next step in their school life, wherever that may be”. Open 48 weeks of the year, the Rydes Hill Nursery accepts children from rising 3 and are eligible providers of the Early Years Funding Scheme.
Sara has two children, Honor (8) and James (6) who have both been attending Perform classes since they were 4 years old. “I’ve always wanted my children to feel confident speaking in public and chatting to all sorts of people. I think these are essential life skills these days” says Sara. Sara was drawn to Perform because of its focus on developing confidence and self-esteem in a fun way. “It’s not a pushy stage school” she explains. “Each week, the classes focus on a topic like manners, making eye contact or introducing themselves, but this is wrapped up in a highly engaging way in the context of drama and songs.” “Since my children started attending Perform, other parents frequently remark on their confidence and how well they speak in school assemblies. I’m really impressed with how they chat to adults in places like shops and restaurants.” Classes at Perform are small with two teachers per class. “The teachers are professional actors with amazing energy and enthusiasm. They go out of their way to understand and engage every child” reports Sara. Perform offers a FREE no-obligation dance or drama class in: Farnham - Wednesday 4pm (for 4-7s) and 5pm (for 7-12s) Fleet - Monday 4pm and 5pm and Tuesday 4pm (for 4-7s) and Tuesday 5pm (for 7-12s) Frimley - Friday 4pm (for 4-7s) and 5pm (for 7-12s) Godalming - Friday 4pm (for 4-7s) and 5pm (for 7-12s) Guildford - Saturday 9.30am and 11.15am and Wednesday 4pm (for 4-7s) and Saturday 2pm and Wednesday 5pm (for 7-12s) Haslemere - Tuesday at 4pm (for 4-7s) and 5pm (for 7-12s) Woking - Saturday 9.30am and 11.15am and Wednesday 4pm (for 4-7s) and Saturday 2pm and Wednesday 5pm (for 7-12s). Does Your Child Need Help With Maths? There is a way to super-charge your child’s Maths confidence. Jade from Rownhams, Southampton was worried about her daughter: “Lola was finding maths quite tough, both at school and at home. In turn, her confidence was non-existent, meaning she struggled to enjoy maths activities. Since using Maths Club by Post, there has been a genuine shift in Lola’s attitude towards learning Maths and her confidence is flourishing! She loves receiving her maths packs! She particularly loves the games, and the sense of achievement she gets once she has completed them.” If, like Jade, you are worried about your child’s Maths, see if a FREE pack from Maths Club by Post can help your child flourish too. Raising a Compassionate Child
C
Model How to Value Feelings
hildren have an inborn capacity for compassion. Small in stature themselves, they naturally identify with stuffed animals, other children, pets, and underdogs. However, this natural empathy must compete with other developmental forces including limited impulse control and their belief that their needs must absolutely come first – always!
By Miriam Rowland
Whenever possible, model warmth and empathy towards others when you are with your children. Children are watching you to learn appropriate ways of behaving and interacting, and are known to be influenced by the behaviours they see around them. You can be a good role model by acknowledging and valuing others’ feelings, and showing understanding and sympathy when someone is sad, upset, distressed, frustrated or in need of help.
With so much hatred and turmoil in the world, not to mention the extraordinary child-centredness of our society, it seems more important than ever to raise children who can understand and be kind to other people.
Connect Feelings, Thoughts and Behaviours
Teaching kindness doesn’t mean lectures or visits to food banks. It can be part of everyday life and you can model it in how you answer your child’s questions, how you help your child solve conflict in the playground and how you nurture their growing capacity to understand and think about other people.
When talking about feelings, use words to explain how certain behaviours connect with these feelings so children can understand cause and effect. This can be done through stories, play-acting or reading books. Talk to children about the thoughts, feelings and behaviours of the characters. What might the characters do next?
Of course, temperament plays a role – some children are naturally more tuned into other people’s feelings and difficulties whilst others are a bit oblivious. Either way, you have the influence and the ability to foster your child’s ability to empathise.
Connect these scenarios with your child’s own experiences. For example, if a character is sad because she misses her parents, connect that feeling to a time the child also expressed sadness about something similar. This helps your child more clearly understand the connection between feelings, thoughts and behaviours.
Take it in small doses and don’t expect too much from them at first. It’ll be a slow and gradual journey for your child to understand that other people have feelings, and that their feelings count.
Teach Children about Emotions Children can’t empathise with what others are feeling if they don’t know how to use words to describe their own emotions. As your child goes through his day, make sure to point out which emotions you see him feel, and also which ones you’re feeling too.
After Conflicts, Discuss what Everyone was Feeling Don’t try to discuss feelings while your child is hitting his sibling. Once
you’ve separated the two of them and they have calmed down, it is great to go back and talk about what each child was feeling. Younger children can be helped to figure out what they may have been thinking or feeling at the time. At the same time, you can help them figure out how to express their feelings in a more constructive way.
THE PERFORMANCE ACADEMY IS THE UK’S PREMIER GRASSROOTS PLAYER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME FOR BOYS & GIRLS AGED 7-17 YEARS OLD.
Let Them See YOU Resolve Conflicts in your Life Almost everyone argues in front of their children sometimes, even though ideally you should limit this. If you cannot keep your tone and your words under control, try not to engage with your partner on sensitive subjects when your children are around. However, when arguments do happen, the key is to prevent them impacting your children: if you fight in front of them, make up in front of them too. A good rule of thumb is: if children never see conflict resolution in a relationship, they will be unlikely to be able to resolve conflicts in their own later relationships. Make sure to take the other party’s perspective into account when resolving your difficulties.
Speak for Those who Cannot Speak for Themselves Children frequently exhibit empathy toward babies, who naturally elicit empathy as part of an evolutionary adaptation to ensure that they get taken care of by older humans. To make the most of this phenomenon, make sure to discuss and wonder aloud with your child about what babies (and pets) may be feeling.
Model Respect for Those who Seem Different Children are naturally fascinated by those who are different. If a child is curious about someone with a disability, don’t just shush them. Make friends with the person and allow your child to see that this person is more similar to him than different. Often, the person will explain his disability to your child, if your child is prompted to ask respectful questions.

buoyancy, body position, gliding and correct leg kick action before introducing the full stroke. Students that are given the correct core elements will thrive, and become good swimmers. The majority of SwimWay swimming lessons are provided as one-to-one, or as semi-private classes. This allows the instructor to create a specific lesson plan for each student.
Because SwimWay specialises in private or semiprivate lessons, the children receive full, direct support inside the water from their teacher. This allows them to use only a kickboard as a floatation device without sacrificing any safety measures. This is in contrast to traditional methods of teaching which usually use backpacks, shark wings and noodles. A good programme will work on fundamentals such as breath control,

The swimming programme that SwimWay has created enables all the students to develop and practice key techniques and skills, progressing as stroke and skill competency is achieved. The technology used for booking and assessments allows the instructors to continually assess all students to ensure they are progressing through the programme. This system also allows clients to register and view this progression from home. The SwimWay team has a huge base of knowledge and experience of which they are incredibly proud. The Early Years
Play or Structured Learning in the Early Years?
I
By Maxine Henderson
n England, the current Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum stipulates a 50/50 balance between child-centred, play-based learning and adult-led learning. Over the years there have been individuals who question the system and look to introduce new ideas. For example Liz Truss, a past Education and Childcare Minister, championed the introduction of a French-style ‘structured learning’ approach, with a graduate-led workforce responsible for larger groups of children, and a reduced child-to-carer ratio. Whilst the benefits of a more highly qualified workforce are indisputable, there are other considerations. If teachers are responsible for larger groups then opportunities for vital play-based learning are reduced.
Some children were making signs to indicate who lived where; others were adding connecting tunnels and others still were creating places for everyone to sit and a welcoming atmosphere. It wasn’t all smooth sailing. The children often disagreed about how to construct the dwellings and tempers flared when some children “borrowed” things from one den to improve their own, but the whole process was fascinating to observe. Our carers were on hand to support the children – making sure they were safe and allowing them to negotiate between themselves. When necessary, they offered suggestions to help the children make decisions, but they provided choices rather than answers. They also asked open questions throughout the process such as:
Whilst the ‘structured learning’ model is hailed for its effectiveness in socialising children, teaching them manners, and creating a calm, organised atmosphere, it is not an environment in which young children learn best. And it definitely doesn’t encourage them to be inquisitive, selfmotivated learners.
How many pegs have you used? How is this staying up? What does your sign say?
Children need to practise negotiating with each other and experience problem solving situations, without the direct supervision of an adult. If they are unable to practise these skills in free play, they become too reliant on adults to both intervene for them in social situations and to motivate and inspire them to learn. A great example of the benefits of play-based learning happened in one of our nursery settings recently. I observed the children carrying large construction blocks, lengths of fabric, pegs and sticky tape out of the building and realised they were busy working together to construct a range of interestingly shaped homes in the garden, entirely from their own imaginations.
8 Families Surrey West
The learning that took place that afternoon was incredible – the children were self-motivated, interested in the task and invested in a positive outcome. In adult-led learning, we often meet resistance, as a child does not want to complete the task in the way that we expect. However, this leads to other teaching opportunities and is equally as important as play-based learning. The two work well in tandem, giving the children opportunities to develop core skills, find their own strengths and become well-rounded individuals. Currently observations are made about a child’s development while they play, helping carers plan structured learning activities relevant to that child’s development. These observations include the individual interests, abilities and levels of assistance required by each child. This makes it possible to organise
interesting, achievable but challenging adult-led activities for each child, taking account of their preferred learning style and developmental level. During the den-building activity, carers were able to identify which children:
• confidently led the action • preferred to watch • were interested in creating the tents and dens
• disappeared when all the building and mending was done
• wanted to play in the dens when
they were completed, delegating characters to each other and adding furniture to create narratives for their games.
A mixture of adult-led and playbased learning is important for the development of every child. The individual child needs to learn structure and rules, and participate as part of group but they also need time to explore their own interests, likes and dislikes and see where they fit into the whole. When considering the introduction of new ways of learning for children, it’s important to consider the impact this can have on the individual development of a child, as well as the changes that will need to be made to group learning. For example, increasing the number of children each worker has in their care makes it more difficult for detailed observations to be made about each child and to organise adult-led activities which are appropriate for both the development of individual children and the group. Inevitably, this forces settings to move to a classroom-style environment in which, sadly, children lose vital free-play learning and development opportunities. very parent is anxious to ensure that their child makes a smooth transition into nursery. We spoke to Cordelia Hampton-John, Nursery Lead Practitioner at Barrow Hills Nursery to glean some useful advice to help parents prepare their children for this important milestone.
• Don’t fret too much! A worried
parent will almost certainly pass on their anxieties to their child precisely at the time that the child needs to feel safe and secure. Be prepared for the maelstrom of emotions that may be stirred up as you realise that your precious bundle is about to experience their first taste of independence. Ensure that
you only talk about nursery life in a positive and upbeat manner and make every effort to manage your own apprehension. Make it clear to your child that when they come home, they will have the chance to spend some quality time with mummy and daddy and that this change represents an exciting time for you all!
• If your child has not previously
attended a playgroup on a regular basis, provide opportunities for them to become accustomed to interacting with other children. Set regular group play dates or attend a club so that they get used to being around people outside their immediate family.
can be really helpful for young children, encouraging them to understand that by wearing the same clothes, they are all in the same situation – and of course they are all equal. Uniform can also encourage a sense of feeling part of a group and this can be very comforting to a child. On the flip side some children may have already got into the habit of ‘choosing’ their own outfits on a daily basis so prepare them for what lies ahead!
• Address your own schedule and make
sure that you are going to be able to manage to collect your child at the allocated time without persistently being late. This can easily stress a child leading to a potential resistance to attending nursery.
• Acknowledge that the traditional laid-
back morning routine is about to get a lot more regimented. Getting ready on time and leaving the house promptly may take some practice so it can be useful to have a few trial runs ahead of the BIG day!

How to choose your Nanny
The Early Years
By Elaine Hunn of Hattie’s Nannies
What is a Nanny? • A nanny is usually a qualified
and/or experienced professional with expertise in the care and management of children, their routine, all round development, psychology, nutrition and first aid.
• A nanny is at least 18 years old and will usually have a minimum of two years training and or experience. She should usually be able to take sole charge of the children on a regular basis (depending on experience).
• A nanny is usually expected to do
“nursery duties” in addition to care of the children. Nursery duties usually include children’s laundry, tidying their rooms, preparation of food for the children, plus other duties agreed between the family and their nanny.
Please note that it is not a mandatory requirement for Nannies to register with Ofsted, or to have an enhanced DBS (Disclosure). Most reputable Nanny agencies require an up to date enhanced DBS for all of their registered candidates.
Why use a Reputable local Nanny agency? • They should have a good knowledge of the local Nanny network, and have many pre-screened candidates. Perhaps ask how long they have been established for?
• They should work closely with
you in discussing your specific requirements and identifying the right Nanny for you and your family.
• They should guide you through the
whole recruitment process including everything from the recruitment of the right Nanny, to such details as the tax and NI responsibilities that you have as an employer.
• They should have a thorough
screening process and complete this for all Nanny candidates before they are proposed to you as a family. Check that your agency meets all candidates in person, and that candidates have a DBS Enhanced disclosure and reference checks on file before they are proposed to you. We would strongly advise that you check this with your
agency, before deciding to work with them – whether they are an internet or “bricks and mortar” business, as checks and standards differ from company to company. Established for over 14 years Hattie’s Nannies is an experienced recruitment agency located between Guildford and Godalming, supplying Nannies, Maternity Nannies and Night Nannies to families in Surrey. Their rigorous screening process managed in person by their Director, ensures a high calibre of nanny candidates. Hattie’s Nannies pays particular attention to matching “the right nanny with the right family” by working closely with both clients and nannies. For permanent or temporary nannies, fulltime or part-time, call 01483 415406 or visit www.hattiesnannies.co.uk.

housework (washingup, ironing, dusting etc.), general childcare (preparing meals for the children, collection from school, dressing, supervision when required etc.) and domestic pet care. A position with the family will include free board and room which the Au-Pair is expected to keep tidy. Other facilities (TV, bathroom etc.) should be made available and the Au-Pair should be treated as part of the family.
Exact days and time off should be arranged with the au pair. A period of 2 weeks paid holiday plus bank holidays should be given for every 6 months completed. There are 3 positions: Au Pair = 25 hours from £90-£100 per week, Au Pair plus up to 30 hours = from £110 per week, and Mothers Help from 40 hours from £150 per week, drivers get more, and some families agree to contribute towards the cost of the language school.
Could a childminder be right for your family? Childminders provide childcare in their own homes. They look after several children together, probably of different ages and from different families. Siblings can also be looked after together. Childminders have to be Ofsted registered. This means they are inspected to ensure that the care and learning they provide meets the Early Years Foundation Stage, they and their homes are safe and suitable and that they and all adults in their house have been checked by the DBS. As well as engaging in activities in their homes such as cooking and playing, they would take children on trips for example to the park or library. Childminders offer flexible childcare, suited to your requirements - this could include late nights, after school care or weekends. Your local council website will have a list of registered childminders.

New Year Reading Resolutions
S
By Liz Walker from Readingchest.co.uk
tart the New Year with good reading habits to get children ‘reading fit.’ Helping your children learn to read is the most important activity you can do to help with their education. Follow Reading Chest’s New Year’s reading resolutions to get on the right track:
Nursery & Pre-Prep 3-8 Years | Prep School – Day & Boarding 8-13 Years
1. Read to your children as often as possible. Children will see that reading is enjoyable and exciting, rather than just another piece of homework to be ticked off. Reading to children opens up a world of books that they might not choose to read themselves and really helps to maintain struggling readers’ interest in books.
SaVE £5!
2. List to your children read every day. Just ten minutes a day will make a huge difference. Establish a good reading routine and let your children read good quality, inspiring books. They will lose interest with books that are too challenging and will not make progress if books are too easy.
3. Play more board games. Most families play lots of board
games over Christmas, which then sit gathering dust after the holidays and busy working lives take over.
4. Make time for reading yourself - and let your children see you. Research shows that the impact of parents reading, has a huge positive impact on children’s reading. If children never see their parents reading, they are much less likely to pick up a book themselves. Boys are more likely to pick up a book if they see dads reading.
Highfield Open Morning Saturday 9th February, 10am—12 noon Brookham Pre-Prep & Nursery Bespoke visits, please call to arrange
