News and Views Surrey Summit launches!

New Owner for Diddi Dance

Surrey Summit, Surrey Sports Park’s new climbing wall is now open! Whether you’re an experienced climber looking to try somewhere new, looking for a day out with the family, or booking a birthday party or social event, climbing at Surrey Summit offers something for everyone.

Liz Barnes had been teaching Diddi Dance for three years, and when owner Alysia decided to hang up her dancing shoes, Liz jumped at the chance to take over the franchise. She has a wide experience of dance and has taught in a variety of dance schools and shows. Liz is excited to be working with old friends and new faces because she knows that dance, and Diddi Dance in particular, is an excellent way for your little ones to grow in confidence and to build great friendships. Diddi Dance sessions are run in Guildford, Woking, Frimley & Mychett. If you would like to find out more why not try out a free taster session. Contact Liz via email at lizbarnes@ hotmail.com or text on 07714 401642.

It offers 24 climbing lines with over 60 set routes and dozens of feature routes. And if you’re up for a challenge, why not try the extensive bouldering area, offering 4.5m high walls and a cave with over 100 different bouldering problems to tackle. For children’s climbing sessions in the summer holidays see our listings on page 31.

Water Babies Launch New Classes Water Babies, who already offer baby swimming classes in Addlestone, Cobham, Godalming, Farnham, West Horsley and Woking are now launching their popular classes in Bordon. They have secured the use of the hydrotherapy pool at Hollywater School which is perfect for baby swimming as the water temperature is a lovely 34°. Classes are starting in June and will take place on Friday afternoons. Melissa, who runs the local classes says “Babies have a real affinity with water because they’ve spent 9 months floating in the womb. However, this early confidence usually diminishes with time which is one of the main reasons why we believe in starting them young. We always incorporate lots of bonding, fun and socialising in our classes, so you can be sure that a Water Baby is a happy baby.” Water Babies are currently offering a free swim nappy for new customers when they sign up for the next term at any of their venues! For more information about any of their classes please contact Melissa on 01932 227 428 or email underthewaves@waterbabies.co.uk.

Avoid the Summer Learning Slide The school holidays are almost here, and we’re sure learning will be the Save last thing on a child’s mind. However, research has revealed that two £50 thirds of children fall behind in their studies over the holidays meaning that when they finally go back to school, many children are lacking in confidence and unable to recall things they learnt in the previous school year. Carey Ann Dodah, Head of Curriculum at Explore Learning which provides maths and English tuition says: “Of course, we’re not saying it should all be work, work, work – but just a couple of hours a week to keep you topped up can make the world of difference when September comes around.” Also, families joining Explore Learning in July will save £50 registration fee at participating centres, so now is a great time to join if you haven’t already! To book your trial and see the T&Cs for this offer and participating centres visit www.explorelearning.co.uk or call your local centre.

Check Your Holiday Booster Seat If you are hiring a car this summer on holiday, check how much each rental firm charges for booster seat hire as it has been revealed by a survey from BubbleBum that Child booster seat hire can cost up to £26.58 a day! Cities with the highest child seat rental prices per day are Rotterdam at £26.58 and Salzburg at £26.02. The research also found the cost of child car seat hire was capped by rental firms at a maximum of £99 per week – equal to the cost of buying three car booster seats or travel booster seats. But price isn’t the only issue facing parents. A separate survey found there was an issue with suitability and availability of seats hired when they arrived to pick up the car. More than a quarter of parents said they had been offered an unsuitable seat, whether due to age, cleanliness or damage. Families hiring a child seat are being advised to shop around with prices varying wildly between providers. One way to avoid hiring a booster seat is to take one with you. BubbleBum is a portable, lightweight, inflatable car booster seat for ages 4-11 that easily deflates and folds flat so it can be carried in a rucksack or handbag.

Take Care at Teatime

Wear A Hat Day takes place in classrooms across the country

According to recent findings from the Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT), Teatime is when serious accidents peak. The charity reveals how the end of the day spells the start of danger for children, with over half of all serious road accidents occurring between 3pm-7pm. And the danger doesn’t stop there - children are also more than twice as likely to suffer a serious burn between 3pm-6pm as they are during the morning.

Together we are funding the fight and, thanks to more of you than ever, Wear A Hat Day 2015 was the biggest and hattiest yet. Brain Tumour Research are greatly indebted to the hundreds of schools and families from up and down the land who have taken part in their flagship fundraising campaign.

The peak in child road deaths and injuries is linked to the after-school rush and the peak in serious burns reflects how, for many parents, teatime is when demands on their time peak. Hot drinks are by far the biggest danger, followed by burns from the iron, kettle, cooker and bath. Babies and toddlers are most at risk, making up nearly half of all child burn victims.

For many of you, Brain Tumour Research is a cause that could not be closer to your hearts as you and those around you have been touched by this devastating disease. Your commitment to help is much appreciated. Brain Tumour Research salute the efforts which have taken place in classrooms where young people, teachers, assistants, admin staff and parents have helped their pupils to bake cakes, make and find hats and in so doing discover they can have fun whilst supporting an important cause. Brain Tumour Research would love to have your company again next year, don’t forget to register at www.wearahatday.org.

Win a Family Weekend to the Isle of Wight! The Isle of Wight is the perfect destination for families looking for a fun-filled weekend escape and Wightlink Ferries, along with The West Bay Country Club & Spa, is giving you and your family the chance to win a weekend break on the Island.

Win a trip to the Isle of Wight with Wightlink!

A family of four will travel with Wightlink for a one-night weekend stay in September or October* 2015. The winning family will enjoy a stay at The West Bay Country Club & Spa, offering New England style self-catering houses and an ideal base for a fuss-free family weekend escape. Located in the West Wight, an area of outstanding natural beauty, families can explore the Island’s 28 miles of heritage coastline or let the kids loose in the West Bay Kids activity programme. For a weekend away, families should look no further than a trip to the Isle of Wight. With plenty of room to breathe it is the place to be, and Wightlink is the way to get there. For your chance to win this unique weekend break and view full T&Cs visit www.FamiliesSurreyWest.co.uk/competitions. Competition closes at midnight on 10th August 2015. *excluding 10-14 Sept & 24 Oct-1 Nov 2015.

Commenting on the findings, Katrina Phillips, Chief Executive, CAPT said: “Children suffer more serious burns and road accidents during the after-school rush than at any other time of day. Parents are up against it to get everyone home, tea on the table, clothes ironed and tired children into the bath. It’s hardly surprising safety measures get missed. But these can be devastating injuries. A hot drink can scar a baby for life. A child can suffer brain damage if hit by a car. Simple changes to teatime routines can protect children from serious harm - whether that’s putting your mug of tea out of reach or practising road safety on the walk home from school. Visit capt.org.uk for practical advice on making teatime safer for children.”

Relationships

Mediation - How it can help you and your family if you are involved in a separation or divorce By Victoria Clarke, rhw Solicitors

F

amily mediation is a form of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) which helps you reach decisions about things that are important for you and your family, without having to go through the court process.

The Benefits of Mediation Mediation gives you the opportunity to take your time and think about the issues that are important to you, whether it be arrangements for your children as they grow up, how to deal with money within the marriage or options of where you will live. The process moves at your pace, which ensures you can carefully consider each issue rather than rushing through it. Mediators will listen to you to find out what is important to you, and help you make your own choices about how to move forward. Once you and your partner are satisfied with the decisions you have made, you can then instruct a solicitor to complete the legal formalities. You can also consult your own solicitor during the mediation process, to check that the choices being taken are in your best interests.

Mediation Information & Assessment Meeting (MIAM) Mediation has become a more central part of family law since the changes in law which now require you to attend a Mediation Information & Assessment Meeting (MIAM) before issuing an application to commence financial proceedings or proceedings under the Children Act. This assessment meeting gives you the opportunity to see how mediation works, and allows the mediator to work out with you whether mediation will be suitable for you and your family. The mediator should discuss how many sessions you may need, how much they cost and whether you are eligible for legal aid to pay for mediation.

In most circumstances, whomever is applying to the court for a financial order or a child arrangements order will have to attend a MIAM. The other person involved is also expected to attend, but they do not have to go to the same meeting as you. There are exemptions, particularly if domestic violence has arisen within the relationship. If everyone agrees at the first appointment that mediation would work well, you will book further mediation sessions. It normally takes between three and five meetings to come to an agreement, depending on the issues in question.

CLEAR LEGAL ADVICE FOR BOTH YOU AND YOUR FAMILY Call: 01483 302000 email: guildford@rhw.co.uk We are located at Ranger House next to Guildford Train Station

Mediating with Children Older children are now also becoming part of the mediation process, if mediation is about child arrangements. If the mediator you have chosen is happy to do so, they can talk to the children of the family about what they would like to happen, so that the parents can make decisions which take into account their children’s wishes as well as their own. If you would like any further information on mediation, or you would like to explore the possibility of mediation with our trained mediators, please contact 01483 3020000 Email:family@rhw.co.uk.

27 Amazing Thailand Festival

The 10th Amazing Thailand Festival takes place at Secretts in Milford this August Bank Holiday. First held in 1998, this fabulous festival is now a firm favourite on the summer events calendar. Secretts is transformed into a bustling Thai street market for the three days of the Bank Holiday Weekend. There are restaurants cooking and selling authentic Thai dishes, alongside street stalls selling Thai silks, handicrafts, spices, jewellery, wood carvings and much more! Each day visitors are treated to glittering displays of Thai classical and folk dancing and exhilarating martial arts demonstrations. All of the family are well catered for with rides and entertainment, farm animals, children’s art workshops and plenty of refreshments. Proceeds from the event go to the Mudita Trust Charity to help support abused, distressed and underprivileged children who may be otherwise exploited in the big cities and tourist areas of Thailand. Just 10 minutes a day to stop the summer slide! Children and teachers work so hard throughout the school year, meeting achievement targets each term – only to find that when they start the new school year in September, things have gone backwards. This is referred to as the ‘summer slide.’ Reading for just 10 minutes a day will stop the ‘summer slide’ and get children off to a flying start at school in September. Summer holidays (and reading) should be fun and relaxing! The holidays are the perfect time to allow children to have more choice in what they read and hopefully read for pleasure. Some children will do this automatically, whereas others may need a little encouragement...

1. Help to create the right environment so that children are more likely to pick up a book. A television constantly on in the background will not encourage reading. Be a role model and let children see you reading more. Keep books, magazines and comics accessible at all times.

2. Even if children don’t like reading themselves, they all like listening to stories. If you are out of the habit of reading (possibly to older children), then get back into it! Bed time is the easiest time for this, but doesn’t have to be. Camping holidays are perfect for story telling where there is no power to charge up other gadgets.

3. Make the most of long car journeys with audio books. They are a brilliant way to keep children’s interest in stories alive.

4. Always keep something good to read in your handbag or car, so you can fill in those boring waits at dentists and doctors without having to pick out the highlights of ‘What Car’, or ‘Country Life’ with your 6 year old. Relax, read and succeed this summer – with just 10 minutes a day! For more reading advice and access to age appropriate reading books visit www.readingchest.co.uk.
