SwimWay Launches in Cranleigh Bookings Now Open

SwimWay is the leading home visit Swimming School in London. We are very lucky as they have chosen an exclusive private pool in Cranleigh as their first venue outside of London. SwimWay specialises in private or semi-private lessons, so the children receive full, direct support inside the water from their teacher. This allows them to use only a kickboard as a floatation device without sacrificing any safety measures. As there are only one or two students in each class, this also allows the instructor to create a specific lesson plan for each student. The programme works on fundamentals such as breath control, buoyancy, body position, gliding and correct leg kick action before introducing the full stroke. Students that are given the correct core elements will thrive, and become good swimmers.

Join All Stars Cricket Today! All Stars Cricket is a programme aimed at children aged 5-8 years old to give them a great first experience in cricket. Sessions are accredited by the England & Wales Cricket Board and delivered nationwide at over 2,000 centres. All Stars Cricket will help your child develop key skills in a fun and safe environment where parents can join in too and help create #BigMoments you’ll both treasure! Following successful registration, All Stars Cricketers will receive a brand-new kit bag full of goodies to help them get their summer of cricket started and fully look the part when they attend their 8 weekly sessions. This year there is a brand-new Cricket World Cup themed activity book that is full of top tips, games and, it’s a great place to keep those weekly stickers to celebrate your All Star’s achievements. Plus, it’s all delivered straight to your door. To find out more about how to get involved this summer, simply visit www.allstarscricket.co.uk and get your place booked as sessions begin May 2019.

The most important aspects of the classes are the lesson quality, teachers’ enthusiasm, and the unique methodology of only using kickboards and no other floatation devices. Of course, the environment and water quality/temperature also play an enormous factor in students’ progress. At the Cranleigh pool there is also free parking on site together with a poolside viewing area. Lessons are for children aged 2-9 years old. For further information please email info@swimway.co.uk, call SwimWay on 0208 871 3972 or visit www.swimway.co.uk.

News & Views Perform’s Four Ways to Boost your Child’s Self-Esteem A child’s self-esteem is influenced by feeling loved, valued and believing good things about themselves. Perform have teamed up with positive parenting expert, Anita Cleare, to bring Families top tips for boosting self-esteem. Encourage Independence When children do things for themselves and are praised for this, they feel proud. Teach your child to dress themselves and wash their own hair. Use Believable Praise It’s not believable to tell your child he did something well when he clearly didn’t. Praise concrete achievements. Saying ‘Well done for keeping on running’ (even when he lost the race) tells your child exactly what they have done well. Listen to their Ideas Expressing ideas and being listened to help children feel valued. Involve them in practical family problem-solving by asking for their input. This helps them feel they are making a positive contribution.

Nurturing Maths Confidence For Year 6 SATs SATs are knocking on the door for Year 6 Children. There’s never been a time when it’s more crucial to support their confidence and prepare for the next big leap – secondary school. A recent survey of parents showed that 41% of year 6 children are not getting weekly Maths homework; putting the pressure onto parents to find ways to practise key skills. Confidence in Maths can be nurtured at home if children are offered targeted, appropriate and engaging tasks. Finding such tasks can be a real problem for most parents. Maths Club by Post is offering an answer with four fantastic puzzle packs written by a specialist Maths teacher and covering all the arithmetic skills needed for year 6 SATs. If you would like to build your child’s confidence and help them to experience SATs success, visit MathsClubByPost.co.uk/SATS and order your SATs Skills Success Kit today.

Encourage Laughter and Show you Care Play, chat, share jokes and funny stories. Laughter helps children relax and feel good about themselves. Be affectionate. Snuggle and cuddle! Show your child they are utterly lovable exactly as they are. More tips from Anita can be found at www.anitacleare.co.uk. Helping Ourselves to Help Others

By Naomi Bartholomew

P

arenting is a complex challenge and recent media coverage of our national mental health crisis leaves many parents and those of us who work in education and with young people anxious to do the very best we can for those we care for. Unlike physical health which often leads us to think of fitness, keeping healthy, eating well, sleeping well and so on the words ‘mental health’ often invoke negative thoughts such as anxiety, depression and suicide. My belief is that we need to shift that dialogue to one of promoting positive mental health. Organisations such as Action for Happiness are now producing excellent resources and advice on this topic. Their Ten Keys to Happier Living are a worthwhile read https://www.actionforhappiness. org/10-keys-to-happier-living. Many schools are now actively promoting resilience and explicitly teaching emotional literacy skills to young children. One aspect we are looking at closely here at St Catherine’s Prep School this term is the notion that we all, children included, need to help ourselves in order to help others. We will be maintaining this as a focus with staff and children and suspending some of our normal curriculum to allow time to explore this topic with activities, staff training and a charity cake sale in aid of Young Minds. We know of the advice as adults that we should fit our own oxygen mask before helping others and are told such whenever we board a flight. Each day for a young child is rather like setting off on a new flight – full of adventure and possibilities but also including some anxiety about the unknown and a leap of faith that the plane will get us to our chosen destination safely. Some days can be a bumpy ride.

So how best to instill this notion of self-care with young children? For toddlers who are ego-centric this can be a challenge as they are really at the stage of development which involves them discovering their own needs and finding the means to fulfill them. Yet as children join nursery schools and step in to primary school for their first year they will be expected to share and to look after others as well as to look after themselves more than they have needed to at home. Basic steps may seem trivial but are important. Children should be encouraged preschool to drink water, to say when they need to visit the toilet, to try new foods and to initiate games or activities which they enjoy or are curious about. In these very early stages children are learning how to meet some of their own needs. It can also be helpful for children to be encouraged to express how they feel and to learn to ask what it is that they think would help. Many may have seen programmes such as The Secret Life of Four Year Olds and see that children can be self-centred and that some interactions with their peers pretty brutal. What we also see with children at this age is natural compassion and empathy – children can be very sweet-natured towards a teacher suffering with a cold or another child who is upset. We need to encourage this natural empathy but also help the children voice what they need when they find themselves in a conflict or a situation which makes them feel anxious or upset. They might learn how to say, ‘that made me feel sad,’ or ‘please can I join in,’ and to initiate a game or activity of their own. As children progress through primary school we also need to guard against constant target setting and the parent version of FOMO ….FOMCMO (fear of my child missing out). We cannot do

it all and neither can a child however talented and confident they appear to be. Hence, the number of activities any young child takes part in must be handled very carefully. Children need time to ‘give something a go,’ even if it is hard at first but they also need to be given the option to ‘let something go’ if it is not something that they are progressing in, enjoying or motivated by. A very important lesson here is the ability to say ‘no’ to something that is just too much. My final tip is simply to remember the importance of being a lead role model for positivity. Avoid twenty questions about what happened during the school day and digging for what might have gone wrong. Praise effort, approach and attitude not just outcomes and be as discrete as possible when you are disappointed. None of this is easy or straight-forward but it is important and worthwhile. Ultimately a happy childhood will lead to a happy successful adulthood. Miss Naomi Bartholomew is Head of St Catherine’s Preparatory School, Bramley. Helping ourselves to help others is an initiative led by St Catherine’s Life Matters Co-ordinator, Ms Rachel Churchley. Open Mornings: Tuesday 5th March, Wednesday 1st May 2019 (geared to Reception Entry), Friday 7th June 2019.
