Grow you own veg in a Bag Garden! Want something fun and cheap to do with the children over the Easter holidays? Well development charity Send a Cow has the answer – plant up a Bag Garden with seeds of Hope (beetroot), Health (dwarf french beans) and Harmony (mustard leaves) and get them growing veggies the African way. For the impoverished families that Send a Cow works with, Bag Gardens are literally a life changing way to grow as many vegetables as possible, making the most of their limited space, soil and precious water. Bag Gardens are hessian sacks filled with a mixture of compost and soil around a central column of stones for efficient use of water. Producing tasty veg all year round, hundreds of UK gardeners have seen that they work just as brilliantly here and have planted them on patios, doorsteps, in gardens and in schools. The seeds are perfect for spring planting. Celebrity gardener Carol Klein said: “Bag Gardens are a really fun activity to do with the family; you not only get to grow some lovely veggies, but your kids will learn about where their food comes from, about the environment and how other children are living in Africa”. You can buy a bag garden starter kit for £12 at www.sendacowgifts.org.uk/ somethingspecial which includes your hessian sack (or three minis), three types of organic seeds plus instructions. And you can also choose to ‘buy one and give one’ by adding a donation to help train families in Africa how to use Bag Gardens too.

News and Views Molly Moocow introduces Franchises
Give them a party to remember!
Molly Moocow’s Moosic and Moovement classes are run around the Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire borders and offer a great opportunity for learning and fun using a combination of themed activities tailored to suit the developing stages of children from 4 months to 4 years. Business partners Leigh and Sam are passionate about the benefits of the classes. Leigh explains how she came up with the concept in 2003. “Having worked with children for many years I had experienced a variety of ways of doing music and movement. This experience inspired me to create a curriculum that used music as a means to engage, excite and stimulate children to learn at all the key stages of their development. The aim was to give children the opportunity to develop in every way whilst having the most fun possible... and so Molly Moocow was born!”
We specialise in Birthday Parties for 4-10 yr olds
Since then Molly Moocow has created delight and happiness for many little people and now hope to give many others the opportunity to experience the Molly Moocow Way! Leigh and Sam have developed Molly Moocow into a franchise. “Running a successful and rewarding business that fits around your family is very exciting and we want to share that experience”. Baby News & Views Sweet dreams Like many babies, local mum Cara Sayer’s daughter Holly doesn’t like to miss out on what’s going on. ‘Holly just found life too interesting to go to sleep when we were out and about, which was a nightmare as I didn’t want to be stuck at home but found that if she missed her nap when we were out, by teatime it was total meltdown! I looked everywhere for a product to help until my friends told me to stop whining and make my own.’ Cara did just that and 18 months later SnoozeShade is on sale across the country. Made from breathable UPF50+ fabric, the blind blacks out 94% of the light to help babies drift off; it’s extremely compact and light, as well as being quick and easy to fit on most popular single pushchairs with hoods; and there’s also a handy zip for checking whether they really are asleep. Available from Mothercare, Kiddicare and JoJoMamanBebe. www.snoozeshade.com.

Babyfit Comes to Liphook! Babyfit, a programme of postnatal exercise classes that involves your baby, is set to open in Liphook in February. The classes are specifically designed for the new mum and will help you to regain your fitness, whilst having fun with your baby. Babyfit’s founder, Rachael Elliott-Hughes, has been running classes in the Hampshire/Surrey area for three years and following the success of both the Petersfield and Haslemere classes, is now establishing a new class at the Liphook Millennium Hall. Rachael is a fully qualified personal trainer and specialises in post-natal exercise. She came up with the idea for Babyfit after the birth of her own children, when she found a lack of expertise and creche facilities made returning to exercise nearly impossible. She said “ New mums hoping to regain their fitness, need a comfortable environment in which to exercise. Babyfit classes are safe, effective and eliminate the need to find baby care - simply bring your baby with you and have fun getting fit! The classes involve a combination of core work, body conditioning and cardio vascular work all designed to improve your fitness and of course - flatten your tummy! If the weather allows, we will head outside and power walk with the buggies, but we also have the warmer option of the hall”. For more information, please contact Rachael. (T: 01428 641854, E: rachael.elliotthughes@gmail.com, W: www.babyfit.net). Local Mum Stephanie Roberts has just launched her new business ‘Stephanie Stork Lawn Signs’. The signs are birth announcement signs that go outside your house once you’ve had a baby, informing everyone your baby has arrived. You write your baby’s name, date of birth and weight onto the stork’s bag with the pen provided and pop it in your garden. For more information visit www.stephaniestork.co.uk

Choosing Childcare
I
N OUR LAST issue we wrote about childcare and early education in nurseries. A nursery may be the right choice for many parents, but if you need flexible childcare while you work, a nanny or childminder might be just what you’re looking for.
Debbie Eliff is a childcare expert who has run Little Masters and Misses nanny and babysitting agency since 1985. We asked her to explain the differences between nannies and childminders: CHILDMINDERS have to be registered, must take a 12 hour Introductory Course in Home Based childcare and hold a paediatric First Aid certificate. They are inspected every two years to assess both the safety of their homes and also check their play and activity facilities. You can (and should) ask to see their references and Inspection report when you interview the childminder. Similarly the Criminal Records Bureau Form for both the childminder and anyone else in the household who is over 16. Childminders work from their own home and will probably be looking after other people’s children as well. They can care for a maximum of six children under eight years old and this includes their own children. They can also offer wrap-around care dropping children off and picking them up from school. Childminders often charge less than nurseries or nannies. Childminders are self employed, which means they are responsible for their own tax. A NANNY will generally be a trained nursery nurse (usually a two year course) or someone without qualifications who has had a minimum of three years’ continuous employment as a nanny in the UK. They have chosen childcare as their career and will care for your child (or children) in your home, which means you can set the daily routine. A nanny is responsible for the welfare, happiness and daily routine of the children including cooking nutritious meals. In addition, they will do the children’s ironing, change bedding and clean bedrooms and play areas. If you have more than one child they can be cared for together without any disruption to family dynamics in a situation that most closely mirrors a parental care. With a nanny, you do not have to wake children and take them out of the house early in the morning. For school aged children, having a nanny means they get to come back to their own home at the end of the school day. They are still able to take part in extra curricular activities as the nanny does not have other children to take into consideration and they can also invite friends home for tea. While a nanny can be more expensive than a childminder - there are ways to keep the cost down. A nanny is paid an hourly rate rather than per child so if you have two or more children it automatically becomes more cost effective. There are also a variety of nanny share options or you could employ a nanny with her own child. As the nanny’s employer, it is your responsibility to deduct tax and NI contributions

but there are payroll companies that can do this on your behalf. An AU PAIR is a young person (typically aged 17-27) who travels abroad to improve their language skills and experience another country from within a host family. In return for offering accommodation, meals and some ‘pocket money’ (a minimum of £65 a week) families can expect au pairs to contribute 25 hours a week helping around the house. This might include overseeing a child’s mealtime, babysitting and light housework. Au pairs are not permitted to have continuous sole charge of children under the age of two. Louise Young of Night Nannies, explains what a NIGHT NANNY and a MATERNITY NURSE are. A night nanny arrives at around 9pm and, as well as offering advice to mothers on any aspect of caring for their new baby, will take on all the feeding, changing and settling of the baby, helping establish a good sleeping and feeding routine. If you’re breastfeeding, they will bring the baby to you for the feed, then take over the settling to ensure you rest, and can offer advice on breastfeeding. They usually leave at 7am. You can have as many or as few nights as you like, even with very little notice! Night Nannies need to have a childcare related qualification, extensive newborn experience, up to date paediatric first aid certificate and a clear enhanced CRB. They are excellent if you feel you just need a good nights sleep, or if you need help sleep training an older baby. A maternity nurse is with you for 24 hours, 5 or 6 days and nights a week, for as many or as few weeks as you like. She will develop a 24 hour routine for your baby ensuring that the new baby settles quickly and easily into your family, and ensures that the mother is well-looked after, getting enough sleep and eating and drinking properly.

NANNY AND AU PAIR AGENCIES Reputable agencies provide a valuable service that goes far beyond having possible candidates on their books. They’ll take a thorough brief from you on the sort of support you want; the level of qualifications and experience you need, whether you’re looking for sole charge or a share, live in or out, and so on. All this will help clarify your thoughts if you’ve not employed outside help before, and lead to the closest match on both sides. The other, vital part of an agency’s job is thoroughly interviewing nannies and doublechecking references before they’re sent out for jobs - unlike candidates you might find online, who may not be as experienced, qualified (or legal) as they claim. With au pairs, an agency is an even more important ally. British agencies work closely with agencies abroad who vet and interview candidates in their home countries. They can advise you on the latest guidelines on immigration and visas, pay and conditions; and if there are any problems you have a fallback. Agencies can also advise you on questions to ask in an interview,

Children’s Rooms
Could your Child’s room do with a makeover? We spoke to two local mums about their new businesses and how they can help!
The K.I.D.S Company is a full service, residential kid’s interior design and styling company, specialising in creating a wonderful and inspiring bedroom or playroom for your child.
The mood board Sarah put together for Sam, and part of his Cowboy themed room, inspired by Sam’s love of his cowboy Woody.
The K.I.D.S Company is run by interiors stylist, Sarah Spear, who advocates that interior design needn’t be an expensive luxury, especially when it comes to our children’s rooms. Sarah studied photography and design, pursuing a career as a photographic assistant in advertising before turning her hand to styling room sets for photographic shoots for clients such as Period Living and Irish Tatler. With two children of her own, Sarah knows just how important it is to listen to what children actually want from their room as well as understanding the need for it to be a stimulating fun place that can be easily adapted as they grow. When choosing a scheme for a room, inspiration can come from unexpected sources. It could be the colour of a favourite cuddly toy, a vintage piece of fabric, the logo of a teenager’s favourite band, or simply a picture from a magazine or a classic fairytale. It only takes one source of inspiration to inspire a room scheme and with ingenuity you can apply small changes to create a big impact. Take for example the son’s room of one of her clients. The family had just moved into the house and didn’t want to spend too much time on decorating the children’s rooms initially as they had bigger projects in the house to consider. Sam’s room had been fairly recently decorated by the previous occupants but was in need of finishing off and turning into a boy’s room.
Local Farnham mum Rebecca Pain has launched an art business after her son’s bedroom design proved so popular with other mums she felt it was too good an opportunity to miss. She is now producing name paintings and bespoke canvases to order for children’s bedrooms, with commissions for murals in the pipeline.
After a free initial consultation with Sarah and establishing their son Sam’s taste and interests, Sarah provided them with an A1 size mood board based on their child’s dream room. A cowboy theme was suggested as Sam loves the movie Toy Story and adored his Woody cowboy. The mood board provided them with suggested cow print, gingham and cowboy fabrics, paint colours, furniture and the essential storage solutions. Sarah included illustrations of a wild west set that she would be able to reproduce on the walls as a border and decals of cowboys and cacti, plus an extensive range of cowboy themed products available.
As well as painting a six-foot high dinosaur, to the amazement of her son and his friends, Rebecca designed and made soft furnishings to produce a complete look for the room. “I’ve been inspired to offer a range of services following comments on my son’s room” said Rebecca. “From small pieces of art, to personalised canvases, right through to wall art and interior design, I work with clients to transform a child’s room into something personal and special. It’s a great way to start afresh if you’re not moving house, or put a stamp on a new place, and bring your children’s dreams to life!”
Sarah sourced the cowboy print bed set and had cushions made to decorate the bed. She suggested foam cubes to be made and covered in cow print material for Sam to play on and sit at his play table. With the installation of a few soft furnishings and the painting of a simple canyon mural with cowboy decals, Sam’s room was transformed.
She added “I’ve always loved art and design, and its fantastic watching the faces of children and their parents when they see the finished article. It’s a dream come true to do this for a living!” Rebecca also produces wall art and commissions for grown ups. All commissions begin with a free consultation at a client’s home to discuss ideas and the space in question. Full information is available at www.cloudnineart.com. Services are available in the Home Counties and London.
An on your doorstep flexible service which takes the hassle and confusion out of trailing the high street or internet for ideas and inspiration. Examples and prices of Sarah’s work can be seen on her website www.thekidsco.co.uk or you can call her to discuss your requirements and book your free initial consultation. 07810 524545.

Swine Flu
Swine Flu Jab – Are you vaccinating YOUR UNDER 5? The national Swine Flu hotline has been closed, and yet we’re still being told the disease is a threat to our under 5s. Sarah Butters from Families investigates With cases of Swine Flu on the decline, many parents are asking why they’re still being called on to vaccinate their children. But experts say they’re predicting more cases in the 2010 flu season, later this year. So as the letter inviting your child for the jab lands on your doorstep, here’s some information to help you make the best decision for your family. What is Swine Flu? It’s a viral respiratory illness first detected a year ago and declared a pandemic last June. Symptoms are similar to seasonal flu and include a fever, head and muscle ache, sore throat, cough and possible vomiting and diarrhoea. How is it spread? By person to person contact, generally by coughing or sneezing. Dr Liz Martin explains, “When you cough on a surface, you leave droplets and it’s these droplets that carry the virus.” Young children are particularly efficient at spreading Swine Flu because they’re not great at sneezing into tissues, and covering their mouths when coughing. Why are the under 5s being targeted? Figures have shown that more than 80% of young children admitted to hospital with Swine Flu were previously healthy. Along with pregnant women, our young children appear to be particularly vulnerable. The jab is not suitable for children under 6 months, as they don’t develop an immunity from it. What are the concerns? Some parents feel the vaccine was rushed out as a reaction to the pandemic threat, and so hasn’t been tested thoroughly enough. There’s also concern about its side effects. Those who’ve had the jab describe symptoms ranging from a sore arm, to acute aches and pains. There’s also a perception that the worst is over, and that vaccinating our children now is exposing them to unnecessary risk. While it may help the government justify the investment they made in the vaccination, many parents are asking why we’re still vaccinating if the threat has reduced enough for the Swine Flu hotline to be closed. However, the World Health Organisation recently warned of more cases after the summer. Can children with an egg allergy have the jab? The general Swine Flu vaccine is called Pandemrix and is grown on eggs, so isn’t suitable for those with an egg allergy. Instead you can ask for Celvapan. Both offer immunity, but children will need TWO doses of the Celvapan, while those able to have Pandemrix only need ONE dose.

The clothes are designed with handing down in mind, in mostly unisex colours and made to withstand the most rough and tumble play and washing regimes. Pyret, this means good-looking clothes that make life easier.
