Are You a Keen Gardener? Local mums’ Emily and Judith founded Grayshaw & Yeo Gardening Company in 2010. Since then they have provided the opportunity for non-professional, but enthusiastic gardeners to use their passion to become professional gardeners. Emily states “Our aim is to further develop and support a network of selfemployed gardeners across Surrey” They are now increasing their client base across Surrey and are looking for new gardeners to join the team. They offer their gardeners a great hourly rate, total flexibility and a great deal of support. Judith states that “Gardening has worked so well for us and really given us a confidence boost in returning to work. We want to enable others to do the same. We find the clients, assess their needs, and put the right gardener in place. All you have to do is pick your hours, agree these with the client and get gardening!” For more details please call Emily on 07799 292573 or Judith or 07917 208655 or visit www.grayshawandyeo.co.uk

Georgia from Bramley was just three when she went on a family holiday to Sharm El-Sheikh with her parents and younger brother Joshua. On Christmas Day Georgia collapsed from a ruptured brain aneurysm. Although she was flown back to King’s College Hospital in London, her family were told Georgia had irreversible brain damage and that she could not be saved. Georgia’s parents, Ilse and James, took the brave decision to donate Georgia’s organs. Their beloved daughter saved two babies, two young children and gave sight to two young adults.

On a Mission to ‘Knock Down’ the Toothbrush Holder A recent survey commissioned by children’s toothbrush company, the Rockabilly Kids, found that 75% of parents didn’t know that the toothbrush holder is in fact the third dirtiest item in the average household, even more unhygienic than the toilet seat. The Rockabilly Kids toothbrush is Europe’s first self-standing toothbrush. It will never topple over and therefore eliminates the need for a toothbrush holder. RRP: £6.99. Available from: Boots (in store and online), Ocado and JoJo Maman Bebe. Suitable for ages 3 – 7.
New development checks Parents are to get a complete picture of their child’s development at the age of two, as part of new reforms to help families. With over £2million pledged to support joined-up checks on education and health development, parents will now have a better picture of their child’s progress at this early stage. ‘No parent should be left in the dark about their child’s development,’ said Childcare Minister Sam Gyimah. ‘There should be an accessible check for all at the age of two, which is a pressure point where issues such as speech delay and behavioural problems begin to appear. This announcement will mean more families can get valuable information in a more convenient way.’ The Integrated Review, which will be implemented nationally from September 2015, will be available to children between 24 and 30 months old. Download your What To Expect When guide from the Foundation Years website www.gov.uk/dfe.

60th anniversary at Haslemere Preparatory School Past success and future ambitions are in the spotlight at Haslemere Preparatory School, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. Although founded in 1954 by Douglas Saul, an ex-prisoner of war of the Japanese, it was in 1955 that the school moved to The Heights, Hill Road where it continues to thrive in the 21st century. Old Haslemere Prep boys are always welcome to get in touch, and many pupils from the early years remain in contact with the school today. To mark the anniversary the school had just launched its’ new website and is about to take on another challenging project of replacing the lower playground with an astro turf pitch. Another busy and exciting year for the school. 01428 642350, haslemereprep.co.uk, @HaslemerePrep.

When it comes to giving children the best start in life, instilling confidence and finding fun are priorities at Pennypot Day Nursery in Chobham whether you are six weeks old or nearly five and getting ready for mainstream schooling. In the top 12 per cent of the country’s early years providers, the day nursery in Pennypot Lane is Ofsted rated ‘Outstanding’ because, Manager Linda Cutchey explains, each and every child knows they are special and has a variety of opportunities to shine. “Confident, secure and happy children make friends easily and are open to new experiences. When you get that right, it is just a case of introducing as many different opportunities as possible to capture their imagination and see where their learning journey takes us,” she said. Imaginative, age-appropriate playrooms, with state of the art toys and learning equipment open on to a garden with for example, an adventure playground and a secret, sensory garden where children go ‘bug-hunting’. www.childbasepartnership.com.

What is Reflexology? By Phyllida Wareham of Balance Reflexology Reflexology is a gentle, relaxing and non-invasive holistic therapy that treats the feet by way of massage and applying pressure in order to balance the whole body. It encourages both relaxation and stimulation: the first helps the body rebuild its energy resources and recover from illness and disease whereas the second helps activate circulation and the nervous system, making both more efficient and thus benefiting the body as a whole.
The effects and benefits Reflexology affects the body in different ways and no two clients will have identical experiences. Reflexology can benefit almost everyone. More people are using this safe, natural therapy as a way of relaxing, balancing and harmonising the body and reducing stress levels. It can be used to treat many conditions, such as:
• Stress related conditions • Migraine / headaches • Joint / back pain • Sleep disorders • Digestive disorders e.g. IBS • PMS • Menopause • Infertility • Pregnancy - after the first trimester and a valuable tool during labour and the birth process. Or it can just be thought of as an hour of ‘me’ time in your busy day, allowing you time to switch off and simply enjoy the sense of relaxation and well-being.
Balance Reflexology Services Balance Reflexology offer a mobile reflexology service covering Surrey and surrounding areas, visiting you in the comfort of your own home or workplace at a time to suit you. They also have a fantastic treatment room in Guildford, where they can offer single and joint treatments. They can offer Pamper Parties, Workplace Reflexology and they also offer treatments at functions and weddings. www.balance–reflexology.com.

Family mealtimes - Let’s all eat the same!
By Kathryn Mewes
Top tips on how you don’t need to cook ‘Children’s meals’. I know, I know, I can hear: “My children eat too early, they eat food I don’t want to eat, my husband/wife is home so late.” The aim is that you prepare one meal for dinnertime. The children eat and you have a small portion with them. When your husband/wife arrives home they have the same meal. A portion has been set aside for them. I believe that it is so important for children to realize that they cannot have their ‘favourite’ meal each and every day. My ethos is simple ‘A meal is prepared and there are 2 options – Take it or Leave it!’ Once this attitude is adopted and you remain consistent you will find that the children adjust and adapt to your ‘new way’ at mealtimes.
* The food shopping can be done once a week, ordered online for ease.
The key is that your children are seeing a variety of foods and you are eating with them.
Frequently asked Questions
Example: Monday
Spaghetti bolognaise and green vegetables
Tuesday
Fish cakes and potato wedges and roasted veg
Wednesday
Thai chicken curry with rice
Thursday
Sausages and mash with onion gravy and carrots
Friday
Fish and chips night!
Saturday
Pizza and Pasta night!
Sunday
Roast dinner
The important thing is that if you are introducing change you need to lead by example. You can have a small portion, or mainly vegetables while sitting with the children. I have ALWAYS found that children behave far better at the table when an adult is sitting with them, ideally eating not just observing.
This has so many advantages:
I think that there is too much emphasis today on children having to eat all of their meal. This is what leads us to only giving them food we know they will eat. It is important to realize that your children may leave some of their meal but as they start to realize this meal is going to appear at least once a fortnight they will adjust. Slowly but surely they will ‘tuck in’.
I often suggest creating a ‘meal plan’ so that everyone knows what is on offer that night.
“I don’t want to eat early with my children.”
You can alter the menu plan every week or have 2 – 3 that you simply rotate.
* Everyone knows what is going to be served. * You don’t have to think each morning about the ‘evening meal’.
Children’s meals
* You are only cooking one meal for the family.
“What if my child won’t eat it?” Please don’t expect your family to instantly adapt. They will ‘dig their heels in’ before accepting the permanent change. If a meal is not eaten simply allow fruit for dessert and a cup of milk to line their stomach before bed. The most important thing is not to offer them something else – you will then be back to where you once were. “We all have different tastes.” You should be able to create a meal where there is something for everyone. For example a curry. You might find one family member prefers the rice, the other the vegetables and the other picks out the meat. In time they will expand on this and start to eat more of the meal. A salad can always be served as an accompaniment to cater for all.
It is very common for children to like ‘dry food’. By this I mean nuggets, fish fingers, chips, potato wedges, pesto pasta and sausages. There is nothing terribly wrong with any of these meals but at some stage your child needs to expand. There is a whole world of exciting food beyond ‘children’s menus’! I suggest these meals are on the weekly menu and they are enjoyed but then there are meals to suit you. It is a life lesson. There needs to be give and take at meal times. Everyone needs to see their favourite meal once a week. Mealtime can be for the entire family – not just the children. For further information and advice on guiding your child at mealtimes you can purchase the book ‘The 3 Day Nanny’ by Kathryn Mewes or go to her website to find out about her bespoke service www.bespokenanny.com.

Sibling rivalry: Social learning in action or time to take action? By Victoria E Karp Psychotherapist at Healthcare on Demand
O
ur understanding of relationships begins at home. Learning to live with others, share and compromise are all part of growing up. When it comes to sibling rivalry parents will often rely on their own experience and intuition to decide if they need to step in or let their children resolve the issue on their own.
8. Allow each party to give their
Sibling rivalry is a normal, natural and often unavoidable part of raising children. Occasional rivalry is nothing to be too concerned about, however there are occasions when parents become concerned that their children’s constant fighting or competing is affecting the family. These include disputes that often end in violence, verbal abuse and bad behaviour that seems to follow a set pattern.
Remember that good social skills need opportunities to develop so encourage your family to interact more and spend quality time together. Children learn through interaction and by observing their parents and peers. Seeking further professional advice can often give further insights into what is causing the rivalry as well as provide parents with support and practical interventions on how that will help manage the situation.
At the root of sibling rivalry is a child in need of parental intervention, reassurance, affection or approval. Changes to a child’s routine, such as the birth of a new sibling, divorce or a move to a new area or school, may manifest in difficult family dynamics including sibling rivalry. Sometimes a lack of personal space can trigger aggression amongst children. If competition and rivalry becomes the only source of interaction or the only way of gaining a parents’ attention, you will soon find yourself
version of events and instead of saying who is in the right or wrong, validate how each person felt.
9. Give feedback such as ‘I
understand you feel upset by X’s behaviour however smacking her is just as painful as….’
10. Some behaviours are simply unacceptable and will need a consequence. Always be consistent and fair with consequences.
in muddy waters. Being overly critical of a child or withholding affection will raise their levels of anxiety and lower their self-esteem prompting more difficulties. Not spending enough time as a family and a lack of individual time with a child will lead to further difficult behaviour. There are some children with special needs such as autism or ADH-D that will find social interaction more challenging and may require further support in managing their emotions, social communication and understanding. Other factors that may affect sibling rivalry can be due to personality differences. As children grow, their personalities emerge and there will be a natural drive towards claiming their place within the family unit.

Ten steps to managing sibling rivalry: 1. Learn to recognize the triggers
so you can address the situation before it explodes.
2. Stay calm and in control. Don’t become part of the conflict.
3. Ensure that conflict does not escalate to violence.
4. Never respond to violence with
more violence as this will confuse your children.
5. Give children a moment to calm
down. Encourage them to do some slow breathing, count to ten or have a drink of water. Never leave a child on their own if they are distressed.
6. Resume conversation when things are more manageable.
7. Unpick the problem like a comic strip.

Encouraging Resilience in Children “The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” Nelson Mandela
It is useful if resilience is facilitated at school but fostering resilience starts with the way in which parents help their children make decisions and choices.
Here are five ways in which we can foster resilience in our children: Teach Problem Solving
W
hat we say and do when our children make mistakes or experience setbacks has a major impact on how they learn to cope with challenges and can help them develop resilience.
Engage children in working out how they can handle challenges. Give them the opportunity to think about what works and what doesn’t. When parents always provide all the answers, this can get in the way of children being able to develop their own problem-solving skills and mastery. To promote problemsolving, ask “how” not “why” questions. For instance, if a child spills a drink, asking “How are we going to clear up your drink?” is a more strategic question than “Why did you spill your drink?” “Why” questions can infer blame and lead to a child feeling guilt and shame. Rather than always answering our children’s questions, start saying “I’m not sure, how can we work this out or find out?” Asking problemsolving questions helps children learn to tolerate uncertainty and think about ways to deal with potential challenges.
By Dr Linda Mallory
helps them learn their own limits. Observe and notice children when they are doing something which involves an element of risk or independence. Ask questions like “I noticed you did that all by yourself… what helped you?”
experiencing powerful emotions, ask them what they need.
This helps focus children on the competencies they need and the qualities of persistence and curiosity required to take risks.
Model Resilience Being a role model is possibly the most important aspect of helping build resilience. Children learn from observing the behaviour of their parents. When we are calm and present in testing situations, this helps our children regulate their own emotions. When we make mistakes as parents, it is good to be honest and open, own up to them and share with our children what we have learned. Resilience helps children cope with the ups and downs of childhood and adolescence and become strong adults able to navigate challenge and change.
Let Them Make Lots of Mistakes
Failure is not the end of the world. It can help our children work out what to do next and make better decisions in future. By asking children what they have learned and what they would do differently next time, they learn that it is okay to make mistakes and focus instead on the process of decision making, rather than the outcome.
Help Children Manage Emotions
Open day
The management of emotions is key in resilience. It’s really important to help children feel that all emotions are okay, including anger, frustration and fear. When children are
