Your Home
Do you need more space? Top tips 1.
Often the easiest way to get extra space is to design a two floor extension providing value for money space at ground and first floor.
2. Increasing the size of the
kitchen is usually a good investment as most families these days like a kitchen/diner and it will help with the re-sale when you eventually move. This might leave a dining room spare which can become a play room or home office.
T
3. If you live in a Conservation
here could be many reasons why you need more space at home - an expanding family, children are growing and they need more room or maybe you need a home office? Or perhaps you have always wanted a kitchen/ diner, walk in wardrobe or en-suite bathroom. Well, if you need more space, you have two choices. Either to move or alter/extend your existing property. According to the Planning & Design Service, it is the latter that many people prefer. Simon comments “moving is costly and time consuming. Good design can add space and value to your home as a long term investment.
Free swim nappy for new customers booking for next term
There are stamp duty calculators online to help you calculate how much you would pay to move. Also, if you want to stay in the same area so you don’t have to move schools or find a new nursery, it is not easy finding exactly what you want so often the easiest option is to create it from your existing house”. So, if this is the option you want to go for, we asked Simon where should you start? “I would advise talking to an Architectural company with planning policy experience, they can advise you from the beginning, find out exactly what you want and take you through the complete planning and design process. The first step is to measure the building accurately, which is obviously a very important process.
WEEKLY
LOCAL
CLASSES
Secondly, after the building has been measured and the design agreed with the client, they will then draw up plans. Once these are approved by the client, the third step is to submit the planning application to the council for approval. Trusted builders that have long track records can be recommended for each project if required.”
The planning & Design Service is based in Godalming. Simon Collins prepares architectural drawings for extensions, alterations and new build. He can be contacted on 01483 417555, 07818 014357 or visit www.architecturesurrey.co.uk.
Area, Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or in a listed building, different rules will apply, but your planning & design consultant can advise you on this but remember, if your friend was able to do something to their house, it doesn’t mean you necessarily will be able to do something similar to yours.
4. Be careful of trees.
Some trees have a Tree Preservation Order on them which means you will need planning permission to even prune it.
5. Remember to keep your
neighbours up to date with your plans - it is much better if you can explain what you want to do and let them know if it will have any impact on them.

African Day at St Catherine’s Prep School
G
irls start their school life full of verve and habitually display ‘can do’ attitudes to pretty much everything they face. Girls are usually early talkers, more socially adept and aware than their brothers and very often early achievers in their academic work. But somewhere between Infant and Senior School, a confusing blend of new social pressures, greater expectations in the classroom, and mixed signals from society at large can dent confidence or make it appear that some girls have occasionally lost their spark. Here are some tips to build your daughter’s confidence and resilience for those ‘middle years’ when girls are aged 7-13 years:
• Ensure that your praise is sincere.
Bright girls know themselves well and will see through blanket compliments which are often seen as a means of motivating them to do something. Girls know if they are not a musical genius or the best artist but will appreciate it if you notice their improvement in any area from one month to the next.
• Encourage independence.
Don’t be too quick to help your daughter with homework or chores. If she asks for help, ask her to try a specific approach for a couple more minutes on her own first.
• Help her understand why sometimes others misunderstand her.
Girls sometimes say at this age and stage that they were ‘left out,’ or that someone else was unkind. This may be the case but it helps your daughter if she is able to recognise that her own behaviour can make her more or less approachable. Eye contact and a smile can go a very long way.
• Be specific in your compliments.
When you tell your daughter how well she has done, it can mean much more if you use concrete examples. E.g. you might want to tell her that she is excellent at remembering things or has shown that she knows a great deal about the Tudors.
• Encourage her to find her own interests and pursue them.
Girls have more extra-curricular options than ever before. If your daughter wants to do gymnastics, sing in a choir, play chess or play netball, give her a chance to give it a go and find out what she’s capable of. Avoid deciding which sports or interests are right for her – she will increasingly be able to know this for herself.
Raising a Confident Girl By Naomi Bartholomew, Headmistress of St Catherine’s Prep School, Bramley • Don’t make assumptions about her strengths and weaknesses.
Don’t assume that, for example, your daughter will struggle with fractions or that she’ll find reading enjoyable. You don’t know if she might like to try fishing or take up Sudoku. Follow her cues to best nurture her strengths and support and work with her on improving her weaknesses.
• Encourage assertiveness.
Teach your daughter to express her needs to adults and to politely share her views and opinions with her peers.

How to safely massage your baby by Giving a massage It is a good idea to follow the same routine when massaging as your baby will take comfort from knowing what is coming next. Make eye contact with your baby while you massage and talk (or sing) to her quietly and gently. If she seems to be uncomfortable or starts crying before you have finished the massage, stop and give her a cuddle.
Setting the scene Create a relaxed atmosphere before you begin to massage your baby. If it is the first time you have tried it, make sure there are no distractions to spoil the mood or upset your baby. Choose a time when no-one else is in the house. Unplug your phone and switch off the television. If you have a dog, or cat put it in another room. Ensure the room is warm and that there are no cold draughts. If you like, play some relaxing music but keep it at a low volume as it is important that your baby can hear you talk while you massage. Have everything you need to hand. This includes massage or vegetable oil or baby moisturiser (you may choose not to use any lubricant), a towel or muslin square to mop up any accidents, a fresh nappy and clothes for afterwards. If you do use oil, make sure that it doesn't contain nuts, that it isn't petroleum based or very heavily scented, dab a little on your baby’s skin to start with, just in case she has a reaction. Place your baby on a warm towel (perhaps with a changing mat underneath) or sheepskin. Alternatively, you can place her on your lap. Your baby can be naked, with just a nappy on or you might prefer to keep her vest on if it is a little cool.
•
Begin by applying some oil onto your hands. Rub together to warm them up
•
Starting with the legs, gently rub your baby’s skin. Work from her thighs down to her knees, then stroke down the shins and move around to her calves and ankles. Gently squeeze all the way down
•
Rub your baby’s ankles and feet, stroking from the heel to the toe and then concentrate on each toe individually
•
Gently stroke down your baby’s chest, following the curves of her ribs. Place your hands flat on top of her stomach then spread them to the sides, as if flattening the pages of a book. Once you have massaged your baby’s front, turn her over and work on her back (if she is happy being on her front)
•
Stroke down her arms to her fingertips then, using your fingers and thumb, gently squeeze all along her arm, beginning at the top
•
Gently massage your baby’s neck from her ears to her shoulders and from her chin to her chest, then stroke her shoulders from her neck outwards
•
Lightly massage the crown of your baby’s head using a circular motion, then stroke down the sides of her face. Gently massage her forehead, working from the centre out and moving over the eyebrows and cheeks to finish around the ears
When is the best time? Try to choose a time when your baby is between feeds so she won't be too hungry or too full. It's also best not to start just before her nap – aim for when she is awake but settled. It can be a good idea to make it part of your baby’s bedtime routine, perhaps after a bath and before the last feed of the day. This will help her wind down and become calm, ready for her sleep.
What are the benefits of baby massage? For babies, a massage can be a wonderful time. It can sooth an unsettled baby and make her feel secure. It can also ease minor digestive upsets such as wind and it can ease teething pains and congestion on the chest. Massaging her face can help to clear a blocked nose if she has a cold. Ask your health visitor about baby massage classes in your area. Emma’s Diary is the UK’s most trusted and influential pregnancy and baby channel.
