News and Views Recycle One More Plastic Bottle A Week Could you pledge to recycle one extra plastic bottle a week to help save money and the environment? Only 27 per cent of recyclable plastics, such as bottles, pots, tubs and trays, are currently recycled in Surrey. The rest is thrown away, which is bad for the planet and expensive for the taxpayer. In fact, it would save £200,000 a year in waste disposal charges if every adult in Surrey recycled just one extra bottle a week. It doesn’t have to be a drinks bottle either, as plastic bottles from every room in the house can be recycled. Whether it holds shampoo, bleach, cooking oil or ketchup, if it’s a plastic bottle it can be recycled. Bottles, pots, tubs and trays can then be reborn as anything from a new bottle to furniture, children’s toys or even a football shirt. To help residents recycle more, Surrey County Council is supporting the national Pledge 4 Plastics campaign, which asks everyone to recycle one extra plastic bottle a week. Make your pledge by visiting www.pledge4plastics.co.uk or on Twitter using #pledge4plastics. For information about If you recycle a fizzy plastics recycling where you live, go to drinks bottle it could www.recycleforsurrey.com for a link to your district or borough council website. be reborn as a fruit juice bottle.

Longacre School - Transforming The Future As a forward thinking school, Longacre in Shamley Green continues to form its decision making on benefits to the pupils; whether this be enhancing their current facilities or creating an even better environment in which their children can learn. Longacre has embarked upon a 20 year building strategy, with the first two phases currently under construction. Phase 1 consists of a multi-purpose Astro sports pitch encompassing a hockey pitch and two netball/tennis courts. Completing in November 2014, this work will enable a larger sports area more suited to the sports Longacre now teach and compete in. Phase Two is the construction of a large two storey Hall encompassing : Upper Floor: Creative Arts Studio, Multi-Purpose Practice Rooms Ground Floor: A Modern Performance Space and a Sports Centre Completing in May 2015, the new Hall will enable increased performances and provide a spacious area. Longacre’s future is exciting! For more information please visit www.longacre.surrey.sch.uk.
All children to start learning a language at Primary school As of this term, teaching a language will become mandatory from Key Stage Two (ages 7 to 11). Schools will be free to choose from French, German, Italian, Mandarin, Spanish, Latin or Ancient Greek. At Key Stage 3 the guidelines stipulate that a modern language must be taught. Most schools already have some provision for teaching languages, but the new guidelines mean that there will be a more uniform approach across England, with a greater focus on grammar and written language. With English teenagers scoring lowest for first foreign language skills in a recent European Commission study of 16 countries, the move to starting earlier is a positive first step towards improving language skills in all key stages.

News and Views Have You Got Time To Volunteer? So many local organisations are always looking for willing volunteers and if you have a bit of spare time and would like to help your community, there are lots of roles to choose from. Plus there are many ways that you will benefit, from meeting new people to gaining new skills. Many charities are desperate for people to lend a helping hand over Christmas. But they do need to plan ahead, so if you are thinking of volunteering this year, now’s the time to find out what’s available in your area. TimeBank, the national volunteering charity, has launched a special guide on its website at www.timebank.org.uk/christmas-volunteering in response to all the calls it receives about volunteering opportunities each Christmas. You could pack a shoe box full of gifts for children across the world, host an international student at your home, help out at a foodbank for hungry families or volunteer as a residential helper at respite care centres across the UK. You might have thought about helping to serve Christmas lunch at a homeless shelter but did you know that many shelters also need entertainers, medical professionals, hairdressers, therapists and dog handlers? The NCT (www.nct.org.uk), The National Trust (www.nationaltrust.org.uk) and local hospitals are always in need of volunteers. You could be a Toddler/Baby Group Coordinator for your local NCT branch, help with gardening at a local National Trust property or you could be part of the library service at your local hospital.

People would pop in with clothing, furniture, bikes or electrical equipment and would learn to fix them with the help of local volunteers. So if you are an electrician, seamstress, carpenter or general handy person and would like to volunteer your time please contact the Climate Change team at Guildford Borough Council on cati.smith@guildford.gov.uk or call 01483 444509.

Highfield & Brookham Schools are hugely successful, educating just under 500 boys and girls between the ages of 3 -13 years and they feed the most eminent Senior Schools in the country. Undoubtedly the continued success over at least the last 14 years, is due in part to the Headmaster, Philip Evitt, whose influence was recently officially recognised when he was awarded ‘Best Head of a Prep School’ at the prestigious Tatler Schools Awards in London. Receiving this award afforded a further opportunity to celebrate having been awarded ‘Excellent’ in their recent ISI inspection. The inspectors judged pupils’ attainments to be “excellent”, and found their attitude and commitment to lessons and activities to be “outstanding” thus contributing to the schools “proven track record in gaining awards and scholarships.” For more information about the school please see www.highfieldschool.org.uk.

Pregnancy
Non Invasive Prenatal Testing
M
s Lesley Roberts is a consultant obstetrician with NHS clinics in Guildford and private clinics in Guildford and Wimbledon. We asked her about the latest non invasive prenatal testing.
When can I have the test?
Being pregnant is a wonderful and exciting time but some women also find themselves worrying and will look for reassurance from scans and screening tests during their pregnancy.
Do I still have to have my routine pregnancy scans?
Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) is the newest and most accurate screening test for Down’s syndrome and other Trisomy conditions. It is now available privately, in the UK, using a small sample of maternal blood.
What does the test involve? • An ultrasound scan is needed to confirm your pregnancy dates.
• A maternal blood sample is taken and analysed in laboratories in America.
• The laboratories look for cell free fetal DNA. • This test can identify 99% of cases affected by Down’s syndrome.
Testing is possible from 9-10 weeks depending on which test you choose.
How long will it take to get the results? Results are usually reported within 9-12 working days.
This test does not replace your routine ultrasound scans. These will be booked by your midwife.
What is screening? Screening tests offer statistical risk of complications and can provide reassurance that your pregnancy is progressing normally. Your doctor or midwife can help you understand the results of the different screening tests available.
Who makes NIPT tests? There are a number of companies who have developed NIPT testing kits. We currently offer the Harmony test which is marketed by Ariosa Diagnostics and the Panorama test which is marketed by Natera Inc. Which test is chosen will depend on individual situations.
Where can I have the test? We offer testing and scans at Alexander House Wimbledon and The Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford.
How much will it cost?

Both tests are £650 including an ultrasound scan which is used to confirm gestational age. If the results of a recent scan can be provided by the patient then the cost is £550. An additional test for rare syndromes is available (microdeletion panel) with the Panorama test – this should be discussed during your consultation. Lesley Roberts offers private pregnancy scans including 3D/4D scans, blood tests and obstetric care from pregnancy through to delivery. All babies cry, and some cry a lot; and this can be distressing and on occasions frustrating for all concerned. Sometimes it is easy to work out why babies are crying, for example hunger, dirty nappy, wind or if they are tired, however sometimes there appears to be no apparent reason and nothing seems to soothe them. But an unpublished study from Denmark suggests that some simple reflexology moves on the feet of your baby may help reduce those screaming fits. There may be times of the day when your baby may seem to cry a lot and can’t be comforted. Early evening is the most common time for this to happen and this can be hard for you as it’s often the time when you’re most tired and least able to cope. Excessive crying in an otherwise healthy baby is traditionally called colic which is relatively common in the first few months of your baby’s life. However, it is important if your baby is crying for long periods that you see your doctor or health visitor to rule out any health problems such as milk intolerance or allergies. If your baby suffers from periods of unexplained crying, the evidence now suggests that the sooner a parent or carer responds to a crying baby the sooner it will stop. Picking a baby up and placing it on your shoulder may be enough to comfort your baby but sometimes it’s not. The Danish study was looking at the effects of reflexology on screaming fits for babies aged between 4 and 13 weeks. Each baby received four reflexology sessions over two weeks, and reflexology proved to be significantly superior to traditional medical treatments such as colic drops. Nearly half of the babies having reflexology reduced their crying to just half an hour a day.
What is reflexology? Reflexology is a non-invasive and relaxing complementary therapy that aims to optimise both physical and emotional health. It works by massaging and stimulating specific points (usually on the feet) called reflex points. These points are believed to correspond to different parts of the body.

Reflexology to soothe crying babies There are a few simple moves that you can try on your baby, try and do these moves for
5 minutes every day when your baby is calm. Reflexology for babies uses massage strokes over areas of the feet and only requires gentle pressure; lie the baby down, face up, make this a fun time with lots of smiles, or you could even sing nursery rhymes to your baby as you work on their feet. Work on one foot at a time, use one hand to hold each foot, one at a time and the other one to make the following actions:
1.
On the bottom of each foot use your thumb to make circular movements, working in a clockwise direction in the middle of the foot – this mimics the direction the digestive system works in the body.
2. Repeat the same move over the heel area 3. Use your thumb to gently push up from
the base of each toe, up to the very tops of the toe.
4. Place your thumb in the centre of the foot and gently press in and hold for about 10 seconds.
These moves can also be carried out in the same manner on the hands. During a screaming fit, try picking your baby up and placing on your shoulder, use one hand to support the baby and the other hand to perform the reflexology moves described on both hands and feet. Having a newborn baby also can take its toll on you as a parent, so why not try some reflexology yourself; it is particularly beneficial in giving you ‘me time’ after the birth of your baby and can offer many benefits to you, aiming to optimise your health, aid relaxation, de-stress and improves the quality of sleep in post-natal women.
Where can I find out more about reflexology? The Association of Reflexologists has a useful website full of information, including a ‘find a reflexologist’ service. Find out more at www.aor.org.uk.

What’s so great about Yoga? And why would I do it with a baby? By Claire Boud, New Baby New You Company
To summarize, Mums will benefit from:
•

increasing their fitness levels. regaining and maintaining a good posture. enjoying some vital relaxation! leaving feeling re-energized and motivated for the rest of the week.
Most Postnatal Yoga classes will welcome babies, and certainly many will actively involve the babies in the stretches and exercises, allowing mums to attend without the need for a crèche. It gives them the opportunity to spend focused time interacting with and learning from their babies each week. This can have long lasting benefits for you both, and is especially welcomed by those attending with second or subsequent children. Babies will also benefit enormously from the Yoga; it develops their motor skills, increases their awareness of their surroundings, and calms and relaxes them. Many mothers attending classes report that their babies sleep really well for the remainder of the day and night after the class! To summarize, babies will benefit from:
I think you would agree that the combination of these two aspects has the potential to make Yoga an ideal exercise to do after having a baby. To many people Yoga and babies are seen to be impossible to mix, however there are numerous and varied benefits of using Yoga in the early weeks and months after having a baby, some indeed that don’t become obvious until months or even years have passed. You may have previously attended a Yoga class and understand the benefits Yoga can provide, however it might be impossible to return to that class due to timings. Perhaps although you have heard about how Yoga could help you adjust to your new life, you may be concerned about taking up a new activity so soon after having a baby. This is where a specific Postnatal Yoga class, which you can attend with your baby, comes in. Postnatal Yoga classes can provide a wonderful opportunity for new mothers to ease their way back into exercise after the birth of their babies. Often new mums can feel quite stressed about their new role or about juggling two or more children, they may experience difficulty in finding time to relax or be unable to do so when they do get 5 minutes to themselves. Sometimes mothers

There are many aspects to Yoga, however there are two key areas which most people know about and understand:
Postnatal Yoga can help mums to relax and feel more in control of their lives, it can put them back in touch with how their bodies work and feel, and help them to strengthen and tone key areas. It can also leave them feeling refreshed, supported, enlivened and focused for the week ahead.

Yoga is a 5,000 year old spiritual practice which originally began in India. It is based on the understanding that the physical, emotional and spiritual elements of life are all interlinked and are constantly changing.

Looking After Your Baby’s Teeth When Public Health England published its childhood dental health survey, we saw the shocking statistic that 1 in 10 children in England have tooth decay by the age of three. Sadly for our little people, tooth decay is one of the most common childhood diseases in the UK. But the good news is that it’s preventable and small steps make a big difference.
•
The Institute of Health Visiting suggests cleaning baby gums, even before any teeth have arrived. This removes bacteria or food residue and maintains a healthy environment for new baby teeth to arrive into and gets babies used to having their ‘teeth’ cleaned from a very early age. It’s important to note that the aim here is for clean, rather than sterile, as ‘good bacteria’ is an important part of oral health, so wrapping the finger in a clean damp wash cloth or gauze and giving a very gentle wipe is all that
• Begin brushing twice a day as soon as the first tooth appears.
Although temporary, ‘milk’ or ‘baby’ teeth still need to be strong for the developing chew action and to help speech and this first set of teeth holds a place in the jaw for the permanent teeth.
• Brush your child’s teeth for them
until they are at least 7 or 8 years old.
• Start flossing when there are
enough teeth that the teeth are touching.
• Get your child used to dentist visits
from early on. Take them along with you for your check ups and talk to your dentist about how soon to start baby dental appointments.
What and how children eat and drink are very important. Avoid sugary drinks or fruit juices and stick to water or milk for the under 3’s. Dried fruit can also be damaging to teeth so if you are giving it limit it to mealtimes. Be sure to not add any sugar to food or drink.

is needed. Chat to your health visitor or dentist about this for detailed advice or if you have any concerns.
There is no minimum age for oral hygiene. The earlier you start, the better and prevention is a breeze compared to intervention. Beautiful teeth help create a happy smile. Christmas Noticeboard Santa Fir Christmas Tree Farm provided the Christmas Tree for No. 10 Downing Street Family run business Santa Fir Christmas Tree Farm were thrilled last year when they had the honour of providing the indoor Christmas tree for No. 10 Downing Street! Julie Alexandersen who owns Santa Fir with her husband Hans who is originally from Denmark, explains how it came about. “Every year the British Christmas Tree Growers Association run a competition for all their members in the UK and last year we won Grower of Best Fir, Winner of Best Wreath (undecorated) and Runner up Champion Grower and because of this we had the privilege of providing No. 10 with their indoor tree for the Pillared Room. We had a wonderful day as my husband, my son and I all went up to deliver the tree.” Santa Fir Christmas Tree Farm is on Guildford Road between Shamley Green and Cranleigh. They have in excess of 750,000 trees planted across 8 sites. Julie tells us why buying a real Christmas tree is good for the environment. “Growing forests are an important part of the fight against global warming. Put simply, trees grow by taking carbon dioxide (the greenhouse gas CO2) out of the atmosphere and releasing clean oxygen. One acre of Christmas trees provides enough daily oxygen for at least 18 people. Also Christmas tree plantations are a wonderful haven for a wide variety of birds and other wildlife from the smallest insects to large mammals. We grow our Christmas trees as a crop and for every tree harvested we replant at least 1 tree ensuring the production is sustainable. Plus real trees are recyclable. They can be chipped into biodegradable mulch and used on gardens, playgrounds etc. Artificial trees are non bio-degradable and making artificial trees uses large quantities of liquid fossil fuels.” Here are Julie’s top tips for a good tree:
• When deciding on a tree, check that the needles are not dull and dried up
