St Hilary’s Preparatory School To Become Fully Co-Educational St Hilary’s Preparatory School in Godalming is delighted to announce that they will be welcoming boys into Year 3 from September 2019 in a plan to become fully co-educational by September 2022. The independent school has historically provided places to girls aged 2 - 11 and boys aged 2 - 7. However, the school will now become fully co-educational, in phases from September 2019, when boys aged seven are invited to join Year 3 and then progress through the school until Year 6. Mrs Jane Whittingham, Headmistress since 2012, says of the move “We continually review the education we offer and the aspirations of our parents for their children. We have become increasingly aware that this is changing and many more parents are looking for an environment in which boys and girls are educated alongside each other rather than in separate schools.” To apply for a place or for further information, please call Mrs Joyce Dickenson on 01483 416551 or email: registrar@sthilarysschool.com or visit www.sthilarysschool.com.

Babies

Post-Natal Depression and Anxiety in New Parents By Dr Natasha Bijlani The common expectation that pregnancy and childbirth is a happy and joyous time can make it very distressing for women to seek help with symptoms of depression. Mothers who have a low mood and experience negative thoughts can struggle to bond with their baby and this is something that is very hard to admit to, whether to a friend, family member or a medical professional. A recent survey by the British Journal of General Practice revealed that women felt under pressure to be ‘good mothers’ and the feeling they had ‘failed’ impacted negatively on their mental health and on their likelihood to seek help.

I

t can come as a surprise to some people that post-natal depression, anxiety and experiencing negative feelings are extremely common after birth, with 80% of women reporting some kind of mood disturbance at this time. Childbirth is undoubtedly a major event in a woman’s life. The failure to properly appreciate and understand the extent of the significant physiological, emotional and biochemical changes that occur after giving birth contributes to some women developing a more significant depressive disorder which is then likely to need professional treatment.

New parents need their sleep just as much as anyone, to maintain good mental health. However, if you are clinically depressed and your baby is waking up constantly throughout the night then this can have even more of a negative effect on your mood. Some women may also be predisposed to suffering post-natal depression. They may have a family history of the condition – their mother may have experienced similar symptoms or there may be a history of mental illness within other family members. A woman who has previously experienced depressive symptoms will also have a higher risk of post-natal depression. Women with particular personalities are also more susceptible. For example ‘perfectionists’ who prefer a high degree of order and organisation in their lives and will feel everything is ‘turned upside

As a society, we need to educate and inform each other about the stresses of parenthood and make sure there is enough support available. Women should speak to their health visitor about any issues with breastfeeding, sleeping and routines, and this is also something the fathers can get involved in. In my opinion, new fathers don’t suffer from post-natal depression in the same way as a mother does. This is due to the immense biological and hormonal changes in the female body, which the man does not experience. Having a baby creates major changes within the family, and for some fathers this can lead to feelings of low mood. In this day and age, fathers are expected to play more of a role in child rearing and this can sometimes be difficult for a man who doesn’t have experience or knowledge of what this may require as he is unlikely to have been exposed to such fathering himself. Research conducted by the Priory Group (1) found that one in 10 men said they have had negative thoughts after having children, and more than one in three (39%) experienced anxieties. The research also showed that two in five men (42%) who experienced depression or anxieties did not seek help because they were too embarrassed and ‘thought they should be happy’ after having a baby. I highly recommend that new fathers take up their paternity leave allowance as this will give them the opportunity to bond with their new baby. I see fathers in my clinic who

are the main caregiver parent and their wives have returned to work, and I encourage them to become fully involved in mother and baby groups (to that end, I feel they should really be called parent and baby groups). Female or male, every person will have different triggers for post-natal depression and a psychiatrist will consider all the factors which have contributed to the development of symptoms. This can include their family upbringing, previous history of mental illness and their personality. Every person must be evaluated individually and a thorough psychiatric history taken before advice on the optimum course of treatment can be given. Anyone who has symptoms of depression should seek help as soon as they can. If left untreated, symptoms can get worse and can have a serious impact on the infant’s well-being, behaviour and development. There are many strategies available to help parents deal with depressive disorder that develops postnatally and to help them become accustomed to the huge change that has taken place in their lives. Step by step, life can change, and you can become the “good enough” parent you want to be for your baby. Dr Natasha Bijlani is Consultant Psychiatrist at The Priory Hospital in Roehampton, London, the UK’s leading centre for the treatment of mental health issues. For more information, please visit www.priorygroup.com 1. Fieldwork period: 11-14 Sept 2017, among 1,002 parents of under 18s, of whom 452 were men.

Parenting

Coping with a ‘Tweenager’

By Claire Winter

“Mental illness is the result of chronic mental stress. Humans experience chronic mental stress when they actively engage their ability to think. Generally speaking, when we actively use our ability to think to manage the tasks in our day, manage our feelings and behaviour, analyse who we are and our beliefs, ideas and expectations, we create chaos in our minds. A high level of thought creates a very low state of mind. In a low state of mind, it is impossible for a human being to be resilient, happy, innovative, loving or comfortable in their own skin.”

Y

ou’re at home, and suddenly your child starts eye-rolling, and saying ‘so what.’ You’ve guessed it….you’re child is becoming a ‘tweenager.’ As it will probably feel like just 5 minutes since they started school, this can come as a shock. The truth is though, that children are becoming teenagers at younger and younger ages - as young as age 10 for some girls with the onset of early adolescence. So what do you need to know about your child’s impending entry into teenagehood? I think the best advice I have been given about raising a teen is that your role is to give them the skills they need to become a successful adult. You are not there to save them from failure or be their best friend.

Understanding your teen Remember you teenager’s body is changing rapidly, as hormones shift and surge; the brain and emotions are on a permanent rollercoaster. Boys have to manage large surges of testosterone and girls have to cope with the mood swings that arrive along with oestrogen. At the same time, they are figuring out how to make decisions independently and how they want to live in the world. According to Edward Anthony, a mental health educator from Mental Well Being in Schools (www.mentalwellbeinginschools.org) the biggest

problem teenagers face is misunderstanding the meaning of mental health. “They need to be able to access resilience, happiness, contentment, high performance, and peace of mind. When these qualities are in a teenager’s life, any other problems they face - anxiety, peer pressure, bullying, academic stress, social media pressures - are easier to navigate.” Parenting expert Judy Bartkowiak from NLP Kids (www.nlpkids.com) jokingly says the biggest problem young people face,“is often their parents!” Seriously though, it’s much easier for children to take responsibility for packing the right books in their bags, getting to where they need to be and doing their homework on time when parents gradually hand over the responsibility for this during primary school. By doing everything for them, running into school with forgotten items and supervising homework, they effectively tell their kids ‘you need me, without me you’d be useless.’ Parents need to teach children how to look after themselves and become more resilient.”

How Can Parents Help their Teens? Edward and his team at Wellbeing in Schools are changing young people’s understanding of the impact of their thoughts. They remind them that thoughts are passing energy and that when their thinking is settled, they will be happier.

Edward says we can help our tweenagers by learning how state of mind can impact a relationship. “When people are experiencing a kind, open, loving and non-judgemental feeling, they can connect easily to others. From that feeling, we make better decisions, enjoy relaxed and loving relationships, can have difficult conversations with a feeling of ease and openness, and we see more clearly that any kind of negativity or bad behaviour in another person is simply a product of a poor state of mind and bad feeling. This enables us to not take things personally and completely transforms parent/ child relationships.”

Top Tip for Parents Model the behaviour you want to see in your child. Judy says, “If you want them to moderate their screen time, limit yours. If you want them to listen, hear what they have to say. If you want them to eat well, buy healthy food and cook healthy meals. They can’t eat biscuits and crisps if you don’t buy them, the same goes for sugary drinks.” Judy also says to remember to believe in yourself. “You’ve done a great job bringing them up and getting them through primary school. Trust that this will stand them in good stead for secondary school. They’ll make mistakes, it’s how we learn, and we build self-esteem through getting that learning from the occasional failure. Be able to laugh about it, cuddle them and let them know you love them.” One of the psychological goals of the teen years is to become independent from adults and to develop your own personality and place in society. Letting go of your teen might be a bumpy ride but if you do it with love and a sense of humour, you should make it through.
