News and Views A Move for Tootsies Weydon Lane Nursery
Surrey Business Gets Gold!
Tootsies Weydon Lane nursery has moved to its sister site at Tootsies Monkton Lane, Farnham. After 10 years of operating it was with great sadness that the first and original Tootsies located in Weydon Lane closed its doors on Friday 27th June for the final time, opening its doors at Monkton Lane to its new building the following Monday.
Local mum’s Babycup brand stocked in Bentalls, spotted by Theo Paphitis & wins Gold award!
Karen Brown, Director of Tootsies Nursery said “it has been a very exciting time, 135 families moved across with us to the new facility, it has worked well adding the annex to the Monkton Lane site and we look forward to building our permanent extension in the near future”. If you would like more information about Tootsies and sessions available please call them on 01252 725503 or visit www.tootsiesnurseries.co.uk. Free entitlement only sessions for 2, 3 and 4 year olds offered.
Babycup’s Baby & Toddler First Cups have been named 'Best Drinking Cup or Travel Bottle' in the highly-regarded Lovedbyparents Awards 2014. If you have a baby or young child you may not be aware that the most up to date information advises that open cups, rather than spouts or teats, should be used from as early an age as possible.
Annabel Eales Brings Jewel of an Idea to Surrey West
Step up Sara Keel, the West Horsley mother of three and creator of Babycup mini open cups. Keel’s children were the inspiration for these cute cups, which, in less than a year since launching, are already available in JoJo Maman Bébé across the country and have now been snapped up by the baby department of Kingston’s prestigious Bentalls store.

Local mother, Annabel is offering a unique local service bringing Smallprint to West Surrey. Smallprint specialises in the production of handcrafted jewellery that captures a child’s fingerprint in polished silver. Looking for an unusual and different idea for Christmas, Mother’s Day, Father’s day, Valentine’s day or a Christening? Look no further! Annabel will be creating necklaces, pendants, charms, dog tags, cuff links, keyrings and more…with a real difference. The jewellery is made from precious metal clay (PMC), which allows children’s fingerprints to be taken before being fired to form a piece of jewellery that is fine silver. Annabel first encountered Smallprint jewellery through her son’s nursery. ‘I knew immediately I wanted to get involved,’ says Annabel. ‘Not only is the jewellery just beautiful, but the chance of being my own boss and fitting work in around the lives of my children was too good an opportunity to pass by.’ Annabel is offering a 10% discount until 30th November 2014. For more information please visit www.smallprint.com or call Annabel on 07813791581.
Win a Lands’ End Backpack
Dentists and orthodontists have been raving about Babycup because it is the right size for little mouths and being an open cup it supports good oral health and facial development. It can also be used for cup-feeding babies if any tricky times whilst breastfeeding is established. The NHS Choices website suggests using an open cup from six months to allow babies to learn to sip as well as to help their dental health. Babycup Director and Founder, Sara Keel, said “To be voted Best Drinking Cup is fabulous. Babycup is a very simple way for parents to make a big contribution towards their children’s good health and development.” See www.babycup.co.uk for more information.
Bisley Pre-School Extends its hours Bisley Pre-School, rated outstanding by Ofsted in 2011, is pleased to announce it has extended its session times to 9.15am - 2.15pm four days a week, including supervision of a packed lunch provided by parents/carers, and 9.15am - 12.15pm on Wednesdays.
This September send your kids back to school in style with the Lands’ End kidswear collection that includes durable outerwear and footwear in a range of colours and designs as well as fun back packs and lunchboxes that they’ll love! Sharon Elliott, Deputy Manager, says the change will really benefit the children: “the extra hours enable us to offer new and exciting activities for the children with a daily mix of structured and unstructured learning through play and exploration. The new session times include a ‘lunch club’ to help the children prepare for school and experience the fun of social eating. The longer session times also enable parents to use up their 15 hours free entitlement per week once their child turns three.”

Shorter three-hour sessions will be available during the settling-in period and for the younger children (from 2 1/2 years). To arrange a tour or for further information call 07855 194070 or visit www.bisleypre-school.org.uk.
The video for a fundraising song released in aid of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, was filmed at Alice Holt Forest.
Success for Fishers Farm
The song Breathe with me by TWF (Together We Fight) featuring annaJo, is about the difficulties of living with cystic fibrosis. Those difficulties are experienced by around 10,000 people in the UK, including annaJo.
Fishers Adventure Farm Park in Wisborough Green, West Sussex has recently been named seventh best rated amusement park in the UK in the Travellers’ Choice TM awards for Amusement Parks and Water Parks, announced by TripAdvisor.
“This song is not depressing, if anything it is inspirational” said a spokesperson from TWF. “The message is that people are living and coping with this very difficult disease. They want to reach out to the wider community so that more people understand the challenges involved. They would like understanding, empathy and support.” The video can be viewed at www.breathewithme.info and downloaded from iTunes, AmazonMP3, Google Play and many more download sites. All proceeds will be donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. To find out more about cystic fibrosis and how you can help, visit www.cysticfibrosis.org.uk.

Babycup also recently received a great compliment when it was given a Twitter boost by Theo Paphitis. The brand was selected by the Dragons’ Den star as part of his weekly ‘Small Business Sunday’ initiative where he chooses six businesses to retweet to his quarter of a million followers.

News and Views “Me Time” with Surrey Adult Learning!
Thinking of childcare options?
As parents, we all lead busy lives and “me-time” can fall to the bottom of our list of priorities. But making time for ourselves is important. It can sometimes be easier to achieve by planning a structured activity that we feel particularly enthusiastic about. So, at the start of a new academic year, consider how you’d really like to use the little spare time you have. What would inspire you to turn off the television, get up off the couch and out of the house? Would you like to re-vitalise an old interest, something you loved prechildren, but let go of some time ago? Have you always wanted to learn a particular skill? Just because you have kids doesn’t mean that you can’t use the limited time you have to improve your skills and abilities and the quality of your life. Perhaps you are an aspiring bread maker or cake decorator? Or maybe when you watch Strictly Come Dancing, you think how great it would be to learn Salsa or Ballroom dancing. Or what about giving time to creative expression by taking an art class? If you are looking for inspiration, take a look at the amazing range of courses offered by Surrey Adult Learning. From September 2014, Surrey Adult Learning is offering 2000 courses across north and south west Surrey, including in Guildford, Farnham, Woking and Camberley. All its courses are run by professional and experienced tutors in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Family Life Pocket Guide to the new curriculum By Explore Learning
In September children across England will be returning to school with a new curriculum to face. While this has been in the government’s plans for a while now, nearly 70% of parents across London have said they are totally unaware of the changes – showing a dire need for more awareness around what the changes mean for them, and their children. To put it simply, for most children and parents the new curriculum will appear more challenging. Many concepts in maths and English will be introduced earlier than previously, and initially this may feel like quite a jump.
English While there is a continued focus on phonics, there is also to be a larger emphasis on grammar, punctuation and spelling. There will be more concentration on Shakespeare, with children and pupils expected to have studied two of his plays between the ages of 11 and 14.
Maths In maths, knowing times tables (12 x12 by the end of Year 4), calculating with fractions, using written methods of calculation and having strong mental maths skills will be more important than ever, and there will be more opportunity to develop problem solving skills in maths – something which we are very excited about.
Computing Children will be taught to write code and pupils aged five to seven will be expected to ‘understand what algorithms are’ and to ‘create and debug simple programs’.
Science New content on the solar system, speed and evolution is to be introduced at primary school level. In secondary schools, there will be a clearer sense of separation between physics, biology and chemistry. There will also be a focus on climate change.
History The history curriculum will take primary school pupils through British history from the stone age to the Normans. They will also be able to study a later era, such as the Victorians. “Significant individuals” whose lives will be given closer attention and compared in different eras include Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong, Rosa
Parks and suffragette, Emily Davison, Queen Elizabeth I and Queen Victoria. Secondary schools will teach British history from 1066 to 1901, followed by Britain, Europe and world events from 1901, including Winston Churchill and the Holocaust. So, why have the changes been introduced? Well, as many mums will have read, the UK aren’t doing their best in the world’s league tables. In new research commissioned by Explore Learning we found that nearly three quarters (72%) of parents worry that British children aren’t leading the field in standards of education – a result of them failing to make the top 20 in reading, maths and science. My advice to any parents keen to understand the new curriculum and help them with their homework is to attend any information sessions that your child’s school offers. In addition, for those not put off by a bit of reading, the programmes of study for each year are available from www.gov.uk/government/collections/ national-curriculum. Once the school term begins, if you’re concerned at all with a change in progress at school, always consult your teacher first. You may also like to attend a learning centre such as Explore Learning where we can support, stretch and challenge children in those new topic areas at a pace and level that they are comfortable with. The most important thing is to maintain a child’s confidence and positivity towards learning; it makes such a powerful difference to a child’s success in education. www.explorelearning.co.uk.

HELP WITH YOUR RELATIONSHIPS ALL ABOUT RELATE
WHY GET HELP FROM RELATE?
R
Relate is the best organisation to get help for your relationship, with over 70 years of experience. Counsellors complete a 2 year training programme in relationship counselling. THE DIFFERENCE THEY MAKE Relate can help when juggling the demands of family life can take its toll on your relationship; for example, with the arrival of a new baby, or when teenagers are taking up all of your time. There may be arguments or big changes affecting children, parents or step-parents. Relate can help you to find a way forward at your own pace.
Here is an example of the difference counselling can make to a relationship: “In 2008 our toddler son was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. This took a huge toll on our relationship. We were permanently stressed, waiting for the next infection or operation. We focussed purely on our children and what we needed to do for them and had no time or energy to support each other. We have been to Relate on 3 occasions. All the counsellors have been
amazing. Having a third party and a neutral place to talk forced us to confront our feelings and issues. The questions were challenging and welljudged, to push us to face up to what we needed to sort out. Likewise, some of the tools and guidance the counsellors taught us have been invaluable to help us to communicate when we have found it difficult. As a result, my husband and I are again in a strong, affectionate partnership.”
HOW TO CONTACT RELATE You can contact Relate by telephone or email on 01483 715285 or at info@relatewestsurrey.org.uk to make an appointment or for further information. Or you can check their website at www. relatewestsurrey.org.uk or on Twitter and Facebook.
Toddlers Room ready?
VJS Accountancy Services Limited
Many parents choose to use a toddler bed in the first instance, rather than going straight from a cot to a single bed. They are smaller and much lower to the ground than a single bed; they often have a safety guard and come in a variety of colours and themes.
Specialising in small businesses and entreprenerial start-ups providing bespoke accountancy, tax, financial and business support 07870 702194 vicky@vjsaccountancyservices.co.uk www.vjsaccountancyservices.co.uk
There are also some ways you can make the transition easier. In the weeks before you buy the bed, talk to your child about the change and involve them in decisions. Where will it be? What will their bedroom look like? Where will you sit for a bedtime story?
Did you know, according to a survey by Worlds Apart, a company that specialises in children’s lifestyle products, 1 in 6 parents said they lost the most sleep when they were moving their child from a cot to a big bed. Challenging the idea that broken sleep stops once children reach the age of two, Worlds Apart’s Ready for Bed? campaign aims to support those parents who are still struggling to get a solid night’s sleep well into the toddler years. In order to do this, they are working with children’s sleep expert Mandy Gurney, the founder of Millpond Children’s Sleep Clinic. Mandy, who is also sleep advisor to the NHS, said: “Many parents expect the broken night’s sleep to stop after the first six months, but this survey has proved that it goes on for much longer than that.” Parents from the survey also reported that when their child was two to three years old, they were woken up an average of three times a night – that’s only one less time than with a newborn. So what is causing children to wake up? Situations such as teething, bad dreams and the transition from a cot to their first bed all add to the hours of sleep lost during this time.
Help to give your child a sense of occasion by, for example, putting special pictures on the wall by their bed and talking to them about their new bed. You could mention friends of theirs who are no longer using a cot, or use books and magazines to show them pictures of big children in nice beds and small babies in cots.

www.pendantmoon.com CRB Checked
Safe sleep When a child first moves into a single bed it is not unusual for them to fall out of it. Age-appropriate toddler beds are designed with this in mind and often have safety guards or protective sides to ensure toddlers feel safe.Make sure you childproof the bedroom with safety catches on windows and doors, and secure furniture to the walls. Clear toys and objects away at bedtime – especially things that could be used for climbing, such as a toy box or stool.
Getting ready for bed Aim to carry out the same series of steps every night, about 30 minutes before your child goes to bed:
Ready for bed?
Warm bath - have a warm relaxing bath lasting no longer than 10 minutes. A bath before bed should not be playtime as this could over stimulate your tired child. Go straight from the bathroom into the bedroom – do not go back into the living area, as you will lose the focus of the routine.
The transition from a cot is a positive stage in your child’s life, as it’s a step towards them becoming more independent. However, unsurprisingly, it can be more difficult for some children than others. First-borns, for example, can be more attached to their cot, while subsequent children tend to be keen to emulate a big brother or sister and may find the move easier. Some children love their newfound freedom and they might suddenly appear by your side after you’ve said goodnight. Others miss the security of the cot and you may find them shaking you awake in the small hours.
a fun & rewarding time....
If your child is being moved out of their cot because you’re expecting another baby, try not to leave it until the last minute to prepare them for the transition. Take the cot down a few weeks before the baby is due and replace it with the toddler bed (in the same position). This way your older child will be certain of what is happening, they will understand there is no going back and have time to adapt and identify with their own space.
Toddler Sleep Guide From Ma ndy Gur ney When they are between 1 and 3 years old, most children are ready to move from their cot into their first bed. There is no set age of course, so you just need to watch out for the cues. Your child may be getting too big for their cot. Very mobile toddlers may show their readiness by climbing out of their cot. Other children, particularly those with older siblings, will anticipate the change and begin talking about their new bed.
Girls Jewellery Making Parties
Lighting - dim the lights in the bedroom ready for your return from the bath – this will help with the production of the sleep hormone melatonin. Story time - Read 1 or 2 stories, have a cuddle and kiss goodnight and tuck them in with their favourite soft toy so they are warm and cosy. Time alone - now that they’re drowsy, leave the bedroom so that they learn to fall asleep independently. Your child should be asleep about 15 minutes later. Mandy has created a sleep advice video, which you can find on www.worldsapart.com together with lots of additional sleep content. Worlds Apart have developed a characterful range of products that promote peaceful nights. See www.worldsapart.com.

Clubs and Classes Why it’s important for children to do after school activities... By Susan Tomlinson
Whether or not you reckon you might be raising the next Picasso or David Beckham, there’s no doubting the pluses for after school clubs.
From ballet to basketball and art to archery, there’s an after school activity out there for every child. And the best thing about them is they’re brilliant for all sorts of reasons – not just learning a new skill. For a start, after school clubs give kids the chance to let off steam outside of the classroom. As clinical psychologist Dr Julie Fraser, puts it: “It’s an opportunity for kids to explore different talents. Not everyone is brilliant at academic subjects and it’s a chance for your kids to shine outside of the classroom. Learning a new skill can also affect what happens in school – kids feel more confident and able to try new tasks.” Here is a selection of local clubs and classes with something for everyone!

Manor House School
Haslemere Preparatory School
Guildford High Junior School
Manor House School is an independent through school for girls aged 2 to 16 years. They are a supportive and nurturing educational environment delivering strong academic performance in a smaller setting. The school has a unique atmosphere. This is due to many factors, including its size. Unlike so many larger schools, Manor House School makes the difference by being smaller. This means that they really do know all their girls individually and are able to recognize and develop each girl’s talents.
Haslemere Preparatory School is a thriving and friendly independent boys’ day school set in the heart of Haslemere. Within a caring, family atmosphere, boys are encouraged to embrace every learning opportunity. Modern values and small class sizes support the delivery of our dynamic and creative curriculum, which is based around four quadrants of learning: Academic, Sporting, Aesthetic and Community. Boys are encouraged to experience and achieve within every quadrant. This provides an ‘all round’ education which will ensure that the boys develop the skills required to prepare them for life as well as their next stage of education.
Proud of their strong academic results and, as a through school and a community of girls, their nurturing ethos is at the core of their success. Being in an all girls’ environment is a very important part of their ethos because they are able to focus on giving girls the self-confidence to become all they wish to be. They offer carefully managed progression from the Prep to the Junior department whilst providing challenges and developing independence in readiness for Senior School life. The next Open Morning is on Saturday 18th October at 10am.
Happy, confident children is what it is all about.
Guildford High Junior School is a happy, purposeful place where learning is fun and creative. Specialist teaching in subjects such as music, languages, art and science delivers a diverse and rich curriculum. Girls aged 4 to 11 benefit from superb facilities in the purpose built junior school and have natural progression to the senior school, which is located on the same site. Music, art and drama puts creativity at the heart of school life, while sport celebrates participation and enthusiasm alongside excellence. Exciting trips and educational visits open up a wealth of new experiences which foster confidence and a sense of independence. Inspectors have described how “children’s imaginations soar as they remain engrossed and focussed in exciting and purposeful play” in a Reception class lesson. Come along to a visitors’ morning to see these effective, enjoyable lessons taking place and to find out more about this outstanding junior school.
The school also has a lovely nursery which takes both boys and girls from the term that they turn 3 where children get to benefit from the school resources as well as experience Forest School, Specialist PE and ICT amongst other exciting activities Telephone: 01428 642350 www.haslemereprep.co.uk

St. Andrew’s - developing potential for life
Amesbury is a “breath of fresh air” – (GSG 2013)
St. Andrew’s School, Woking, situated in the village of Horsell, is a thriving coeducational independent day school for children aged 3 - 13 years. With individual attention and specialist teachers in all areas of the curriculum, the children are able to reach their full potential in a happy, caring and supportive environment.
“Parents in search of an education which will deliver confident children who see their futures in terms of unlimited options rather than curtailed ambitions....would be well advised to pay a visit.” (Good Schools Guide 2013).
Educating the whole child is central to their ethos and, whilst academic standards are high, there are also real opportunities to develop skills in art, music and sport together with a fantastic programme of after school activities. The excellent on site facilities include an all-weather sports surface and swimming pool. To find out more hear it from the St. Andrew’s pupils themselves on a personal guided tour of the school at their next open morning. Amesbury is the only co-educational Prep school in the Hindhead/Haslemere area. Founded in 1870 the school prides itself on sending children to the best senior schools in the country at both 11+ and 13+. Amesbury is a family school, keen for siblings to study together. (Entry is based on registration.) There is no Saturday school, Prep can be done at school and Pre-Nursery and Nursery operate 47 weeks of the year with early drop-off/late pickups. Amesbury offers a unique and distinctive ethos; a rigorous learning environment, but one which is relaxed and good humoured, competitive yet civilised, self-confident but without arrogance. If there is such a thing as a typical Amesburian, he or she is well rounded, interesting and very much their own person: an individual within a system, rather than a clone because of it. Longacre School ISI February 2014 ‘Outstanding’
St Catherine’s Prep School
Set in the beautiful countryside of the Surrey Hills, Longacre succeeded in gaining planning permission for a multi- purpose hall to be constructed on its 9 ½ acre wooded site.
Situated in the village of Bramley just 3 miles south of Guildford, St Catherine’s enjoys extensive grounds, with views over the Surrey Hills.
Longacre is a co-educational day school from 2 ½ to 11 years. As a nurturing community, with average class sizes of 14, the school motto of “A Happy Heart Goes All The Way” is as true today as ever. In its most recent ISI Inspection reference was made to the school’s implementation of BLP. Building Learning Power encourages children to be resourceful, imaginative, logical, collaborative, inquisitive. Mrs Bracewell, Headmistress, commented “I am proud that we have been deemed as ‘Outstanding’ in our Early Years provision again and ‘the quality of the pupils’ achievement and learning is excellent’. The Form VI pupils enjoyed outstanding Common Entrance results with a record number of scholarships awarded”. Longacre School, Shamley Green, Guildford www.longacre.surrey.sch.uk 01483 893225.
Girls in the Prep School benefit immeasurably from being an integral part of St Catherine’s School which has a large day and boarding community from age 11. St Catherine’s has always prided itself on its outstanding pastoral care which informs every interaction within the Prep School. The relationships which are built between the girls and their teachers are key to the success, both academic and personal, of the girls. The school encourages a love of learning and cultivates creativity through dance, music and art. The wealth of sporting opportunities available allows girls to achieve at the highest level. The concluding remark in the school’s most recent ISI report perhaps sums up best the ethos and success of the school: ‘Educational provision, in the full sense of these words, is outstanding.’ www.stcatherines.info 01483 899665.
Highfield & Brookham Schools
Glenesk School
St Ives School
Highfield & Brookham Schools are charming country Prep and Pre Prep boarding and day schools set in sumptuous 175 acre grounds on the Hampshire/Surrey/Sussex borders.
Glenesk is a unique Pre-Preparatory School preparing children for entry to all Surrey Preparatory Schools. They have a fine record of academic success with a curriculum covering both the Early Years Foundation stage and KS1. At their last SIS Inspection in March 2014 they were delighted to receive ‘Outstanding in all Areas’. They also offer a full Creative Arts & Sports programme, Early Morning and After School Clubs.
Happy children make the best learners and at St Ives School Haslemere they aim to foster a love of learning, nurture curiosity and help girls see the world from a wider perspective. Small class sizes, specialist teachers, including dedicated SENCO support, ensure that every child is able to reach their full potential.
The facilities are enviable, including extensive sports pitches, an indoor swimming pool, new science labs, a music school and an art school. Highfield enjoys outstanding academic success and has been preparing pupils for the top education establishments in England for more than a century. They have a flawless track record for securing every child’s place at their first choice senior school, and an excellent Scholarship success rate. www.highfieldschool.org.uk.
Life at Glenesk is fun! They are very proud of their school and you are most welcome to come and visit them – please call Judith Kadhim, the Registrar on 01483 282329 for an appointment.

Independent Schools Feature How to create a healthy dialogue with your school or nursery By Hannah Hunter
R
esearch shows that the better your relationship with your child’s school, the more they will enjoy learning and do well. However it’s often impossible to know what really goes on at school – children are not very forthcoming when it comes to recounting their day. If they do raise any issues, or if you sense something is amiss, it can be difficult to know how to broach the subject with school.

As both a parent and a primary teacher, I know how hard it can be to strike the right balance. If you’re meeting a teacher outside of parents’ evening or class surgeries, it’s because there is a problem. These meetings can easily become tense, with both ‘sides’ on the defensive.
Here are a few tips for successful communication: Assume the best of your child’s teacher
They are trained professionals who understand the curriculum and child development. They ultimately want the same as you – a happy child who is learning.
Let teachers know if there are problems at home www.sthilarysschool.com • registrar@sthilarysschool.com 01483 416551 • Holloway Hill, Godalming, Surrey GU7 1RZ
Guildford High School creative thinking • creative learning
You don’t have to go into graphic detail, just tell them if something’s happened which may affect your child’s behaviour.
Please don’t assume that your child always tells the truth!
After all, teachers don’t automatically believe what your child tells them about home.
Remain calm and neutral “Little Johnny came home rather upset about xxx, I wondered what your take on it is…”, rather than “Why did you shout at Little Johnny like that?”
Mediation Come along to one of our Junior School Visitors’ Mornings to find out more about Guildford High Junior School, for girls aged 4 to 11. Tuesday 9th September | Wednesday 24th September | Tuesday 18th November We look forward to welcoming you to school! Get in touch at guildford-admissions@guildfordhigh.co.uk or call us on 01483 543 853 www.guildfordhigh.surrey.sch.uk
If you have issues with a teacher’s conduct, and feel upset or angry, it’s best that an additional member of staff is present.
Remember that teachers are human They sometimes make mistakes, so try to forgive them for it.
Talk to the teacher first Even negative feedback is appreciated. Going directly to the head is a bit like them phoning your boss whenever your child misbehaves!
Helping out in school
Get an insight into how things are run and improve your relationship with the school by volunteering.
Parent Helper
Helping out in class can be fun and rewarding. Research shows that having a parent who volunteers improves a child’s experience of school. Organise a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check - you can then volunteer regularly or as a one-off.
School Trips
If you’ve had the DBS check, this one is great for ingratiating yourself. On what is invariably a stressful day, a responsible parent helping out can be a lifesaver!
Use your Expertise
Maybe there’s a school club that would fit your skill set or interests. If not, you could talk to the class or even do an assembly. One volcanologist parent at my son’s school did a legendary presentation including exploding volcanoes.
Join the PTA
Fostering closer home-school links, the PTA usually organise the school’s fundraising projects, from fetes to family quiz nights. Run by committee, they may include ‘class reps’ who pass on information from other parents in the class.
School Governors
Comprising parent governors and other community members, this group of elected volunteers helps to make management decisions, such as running buildings and budgets, supporting staff and setting discipline standards. It can be time-consuming, particularly if the school’s results are getting worse or it’s going through a big change like appointing a new head teacher, or joining with another school.
Parent Council member
Some schools have a Parent council, where parents meet to share ideas that are fed back to the school governors. This is great if you’re too busy to commit to PTA or Governors, but want to have an input.

Barfield EYFS is “Outstanding”! Barfield School’s EYFS department is delighted to have been awarded the accolade of “Outstanding” in all areas by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI). The inspectors found the department to be performing at a very high standard across the board, with a “highly skilled and dynamic” team of staff. Barfield is a co-educational school for children between 2-13 years old, set in 12 acres of beautiful grounds, one mile east of Farnham. The nursery is newly refurbished and has airy rooms which are light, uncluttered and conducive to learning. Barfield pupils receive a broad educational experience, with quality academic teaching in an excellent pastoral setting. Scholarships are offered in Year 3 and Year 7 with awards of up to 50% to those with talents in academia, art, music and sport. Barfield children are often outside: they regularly attend forest schools and have access to low ropes courses and adventures from Three Peaks. Sport is an important aspect of Barfield life. The indoor pool allows them to swim all year, right from age two, so standards are high. The next open day is on Saturday 20th September 2014. Barrow Hills School replace pencils with digital S pens Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. and Barrow Hills School have partnered to form a revolution in teaching. Pupils and teachers have been equipped with the latest Samsung Galaxy Note Pro and 10.1 devices and digital S-pens, which connect to Samsung Wi-Fi connected classrooms and work is shared on large 60-inch interactive touch-screen displays that have been installed at the front of each classroom. A Virtual Learning Environment, accessible via the cloud, provides access to a range of documents, allowing teachers to set and mark digital homework. This technology makes lesson preparation and marking much quicker, meaning less time on administration and more time in the class room. From the pupils’ perspective, the Samsung Galaxy Notes are the focal point of the connected school: they provide an all-in-one journal, exercise book, text book, creative pad for design and art, a calculator, a research tool and more. The Galaxy Note’s S-pen also allows pupils to correct work digitally, from making corrections to writing exercises to cropping and editing art work and designs. Tormead Junior School - Where learning is fun
Edgeborough School
Tormead is an academically selective independent day school for girls aged 4 to 11.
Edgeborough, situated in 50 acres of beautiful grounds, offers co-educational education for children (2-13 yrs). The Nursery was awarded ‘Outstanding’ in its recent ISI Inspection with top marks achieved in a whole series of aspects across the school.
The academic pace offers stimulus and challenge, but is combined with an excellent range of extra-curricular activities enabling Tormead to offer a broad but balanced, stimulating and progressive education, all underpinned by an emphasis on the pastoral care of the pupils allowing them to carefully monitor the progress and welfare of every girl.
Changes to the length of the school day have led to greater flexibility for pupils and parents. With a Breakfast Club and after school activities, the children have a wide variety of voluntary options to choose from. Years 3-8 have flexible pick up times from 4.20-7.30pm. Pupils go on to a wide range of top Independent Schools. Scholarships are frequently awarded, in the last two years sixty leavers have gained thirty awards between them.
They value individuality, celebrate diversity and encourage girls to be themselves. They are proud of their ethos of encouraging each pupil to develop her talents to the full.
The most recent ISI report (May 2011) reported that the Early Years provision was outstanding and that the girls made excellent progress in all areas of the curriculum, particularly their social and emotional development. Tormead welcomes you to visit them at the next Open Day or call the Registrar, Cherry Scott on 01483 796040 for more information.

The strong boarding community gives the school its family atmosphere with flexi boarding available. Facilities include a swimming pool, golf course, floodlit all-weather courts, fully equipped theatre, dance studio and sports hall. 01252 79249. www.edgeborough.co.uk.
Tips on Choosing an Independent School Firstly, try and visit the school on a normal day as well as an open day, especially if the open day is on a Saturday and the children aren’t in class. Do you want a single sex or a mixed school? For both sides of the debate see www.familiessurreywest.co.uk/choosingaschool. Look at the facilities, but remember that the teachers are the most important part of a school so make sure you see lessons in progress and ask about staff turnover - some movement is healthy, bringing fresh ideas: too much indicates dissatisfaction and can be disrupting. Do you want a school that goes all the way through to GCSEs and A-Levels/International Baccalaureate, or would you like your child to go to a prep school that doesn’t have a senior school? Which schools/ universities do children go on to? Remember to do the journey in the morning rush hour to see how long it takes when considering a school a bit further from home. Does the school offer any bursaries or scholarships? When you visit, look at the pupils in the final year or two, as these are the product of the school. If you are shown round by a pupil, ask them lots of questions as you will often get an honest answer - such as “what one thing could the school improve?”. Does the school have an active PTA, and what sort of social activities does it organise?

What extra curricular activities are offered - are they at lunchtime or after school? If you are a working parent ask about wrap around care and how flexible this is, can you book into after school care the week or day before? Do they run a holiday camp in the school holidays and what hours does it run? What is the communication like with parents, it’s important you know who to talk to if you have a problem or concern. Who is responsible for pastoral care? What are the class sizes, are children streamed and at what age and in what subjects? At the top end of the school are they taught by subject specialists? How do they treat/identify special needs children on both ends of the spectrum? Enquire about the extra help available for children who are above or below average in a particular subject. Has the ‘Jamie Oliver effect’ reached the lunch menu? Look for a sample menu and ask pupils what they think of the school food. Listen to the Head’s address if there is one and talk to him or her too. A good school will have an inspiring, enthusiastic and committed headteacher, supported by a loyal and united management team. Remember to visit schools early, as some can get booked up.

Wild Monkey Events are like no other your child will have experienced before; action packed, fun filled, exciting and new. From our 250 acre private estate in the beautiful Surrey countryside we have been delivering corporate events, children’s parties and multi-activity days for over two decades, and during this time we have been asked repeatedly ‘do you offer holiday camps for children’. And finally the answer is a resounding YES!!!! Designed for children aged 8-14 years old, our holiday camps run throughout the school holidays (with the exception of weekends and bank holidays) and because we understand the importance of finding a holiday camp to coincide with your busy schedule we also offer an Early Morning/Late Afternoon Club.
