News & Views Highfield and Brookham School Launches ‘Larks and Owls’ Care Highfield and Brookham are now offering parents of children in Nursery to Year 5 longer before and after school care to better support working parents. Care can start at 7.30am and see the children through until 6.30pm and includes a hearty breakfast and a homemade dinner. Starting at 7.30am eases the pressure of balancing the school run with commuting, and ensures the children start the day well fed and relaxed. In the evening, as the children will have already eaten, the focus can be on what is important – curling up in bed with a story! For more information, book a visit at highfieldschool.org.uk or call 01428 722005.

Ripley Court School Merges into Reed’s School Ripley Court School in Ripley have announced that Ripley Court School will merge into Reed’s School. Ripley Court and Reed’s have worked together for many years and share a philosophy of education which focusses on developing the whole child within a nurturing environment. The Board of Governors of both schools believe that this proposed merger is a natural extension of this strong relationship. It will allow both schools to benefit from a combination of outstanding staff and facilities whilst retaining the heritage and current structure of each school. The intention is for Ripley Court to merge into the existing Reed’s School charitable framework, but the two schools will maintain their names, identity, location, structure and admissions process. Ripley Court will remain co-educational for children from 3-13 and will continue to fully support all their pupils, both girls and boys, for a wide variety of senior school choices by preparing them for their entrance exams.

Barrow Hills School Announces New Head Barrow Hills School, Witley, announces the appointment of Philip Oldroyd as its next Head. Mr Oldroyd will take over the reins at the 230-pupil Surrey prep school in September 2019. He succeeds Sean Skehan, who is stepping down for personal reasons after three years at the helm. Currently Interim Head at Leehurst Swan School in Salisbury, Mr Oldroyd brings with him extensive experience of leading schools from nursery through to Sixth Form as both Head and Deputy. He says: “My philosophy is that each child is an individual according to their different maturity levels, talents and views. By promoting mutual respect, curiosity of mind and independence of spirit we can prepare each to take their place in an ever-changing world. This resonates well with the Barrow Hills motto “we are prepared for greater things”. Barrow Hills School is an IAPS co-educational 2-13 years day preparatory school and nursery in Witley. It is a partner school of King Edward’s, Witley.

New Owners For Stagecoach Schools Stagecoach provide quality part-time training in the performing arts for children aged 4-18 years. Their aim is to nurture and develop young potential through singing, acting and dance classes, stretching young imaginations and helping to develop confidence, physical awareness, communication and articulation - as well as being educational and fun. Nikky Watts is the new owner of Stagecoach Farnborough. Her love of performing arts began at an early age and since then it has been a very large part of her life. After performing professionally and teaching it became evident that Nikky’s real passion lies with helping children reach their potential and building self-confidence through the arts. Nikky says “Stagecoach is a safe place for all children where they can come and truly be themselves. We teach them valuable life lessons and it will be a place of acceptance where everyone feels comfortable.” Georgia Briggs is taking over the reigns at Stagecoach Frimley. She has performed in Musical Theatre for the past 8 years and has just finished performing in Wicked The Musical. Georiga says “it has always been a life-long ambition of mine to have a Stagecoach school. I attended Stagecoach as a child myself and can honestly say it gave me a love of performing, whilst at the same time it built my inner confidence which I have carried through to the rest of my life and career. Over the past 10 years, I have taught at several Stagecoach schools so I know exactly what is required as a teacher and a performer.” Stagecoach also run classes in Camberley, Farnham, Godalming, Guildford, Liphook and Woking. https://www.stagecoach.co.uk.

Free One Week Trial with Kumon Kumon offer English and Maths programmes, which help children of any age and ability to become confident, independent learners with a positive attitude to study. Currently they are offering a one-week free trial from 1 -30 September! There are local study centres in Farnham, Frimley, Guildford East, Guildford North and Haslemere. Rather than offering conventional maths and English tuition, their Instructors set themselves apart by guiding their students through work that is set at just the right level for them, keeping them engaged and making progress. They support and encourage students to work out answers by themselves, helping them to become selfsufficient, successful learners for the future. By studying little and often through daily worksheets and twice weekly study centre visits, their students steadily increase ability and fluency, building their skills in small, manageable steps.

Free one week trial!

To book your child’s free one week trial visit www.kumon.co.uk, call your local centre or call 0800 854 714.

News & Views Kids Activities Galore at G Live Guildford

Improving your Child’s Concentration

Surrey’s flagship arts and events venue, G Live might be best-known for presenting the biggest and best comedy, live music and smashhit family shows; but following the appointment of Fiona Moon, as Creative Learning Manager, it is increasingly being recognised for its inclusive, engaging activities for young people to enjoy.

Perform and parenting expert and child psychologist, Dr Claire Halsey offer their tips. Concentration is a vital life skill which develops from birth. Linked closely to brain development, it improves alongside a child’s memory and ability to organise their thoughts.

Based in the heart of Guildford, G Live will once again present a bumper programme of half term activities including Micro:Bit game creation, Combat-skills and Theatrical Make-up workshops plus lots more from 29 Oct – 2 Nov, finishing with a SENSE-ATIONAL Family Fun Day and balloon-tastic kids show, Rise and Fall (pictured) in its Bellerby Studio.

Set Up for Success Reduce big distractions: television, music and screen time make it difficult to listen and concentrate, so limit these to set times.

The venue has also announced its plans to celebrate National Space Week, with Space Day on 5 October seeing a programme of sensory play activities for under 4’s taking place across the venue, in collaboration with the University of Surrey.

Make it Fun Make activities fun as your child is more likely to pay attention eg tidying up toys is less of a chore when you offer a tickle to the child who finishes first! Keep Practising Games and activities can build concentration. Choose turn-taking games like Snap or Picture Dominoes or those with simple instructions.

For more information and to book your place, see GLive.co.uk.

Praise the Good Stuff Praise your child when they focus rather than highlighting when they don’t eg “Well done for sticking with that puzzle.”

Chobham Adventure Farm’s Magical Christmas Experience the magic of Christmas and sprinkle a little extra magic with a visit to meet Santa and his elves at Chobham Adventure Farm!

Seek Advice A small number of children have difficulty paying attention no matter how hard they try. Ask your child’s teacher for suggestions. If you’re still concerned, see your GP.

Santa’s elves have a very special job for you but first you must become an official ‘Elf Helper’! Meet the North Pole’s oldest Elf, attend elf lessons, meet Mrs Claus, help the elves with their important elfie tasks, build your very own bear, not to mention meeting the jolly old big man himself!

More from Dr Claire Halsey at www.clairehalsey.com. Perform offers concentration-boosting drama classes in Farnham, Frimley, Godalming, Guildford, Haslemere and Woking. Try a FREE no-obligation class at www.perform.org.uk/try

Magical Christmas is running on select days between the 30th November and the 24th December 2019. Tickets include your visit to Santa AND entrance to the Farm Park to let off steam as you count down the days to Santa’s arrival. A fun filled festive day full of magic and surprises, one you will not want to miss!

Making Maths Fun

I

always say that maths is like broccoli. You either like it or you hate it but you have to have some because it’s good for you. Now I’ll tell you a secret. I do not like broccoli, but I do find it helps to have a bit of brown sauce on it! Similarly, maths becomes more exciting when it’s spiced up a little. It’s important that your children are comfortable enough with simple sums that they don’t have to rely on a calculator - that’s like using arm bands for swimming! If they can develop an instinct for numbers, simple sums become much easier. The secret is to spend some time playing around with numbers and getting to know them. Here are a few little facts, games and tricks to share with your children to help them see that numbers have quirky behaviours and make fun patterns.

Trick 1 If you write out the digits 1 2 3 4, you can turn them into 12 = 3 x 4. You can also do this with 5 6 7 8 because 56 = 7 x 8.

Trick 2 Pick any three consecutive numbers (e.g. 4, 5, 6). Multiply the smallest by the biggest, and then add one. (So here we get 4 x 6 =24, then 24 + 1 = 25). The answer is always the same as the middle number squared … i.e. times by itself. (Here we get 5 x 5 = 25 YAY!) This works with any three consecutive numbers, so let’s try 7, 8, 9. 7 x 9 = 63, then 63 + 1= 64 and that’s the same as 8 x 8!

Trick 3 The numbers in the 3 times table have a special trick, because if you add the digits together, the answer will always divide by 3. For instance 8 x 3 =24, and 2 + 4 = 6 which divides by 3. You can use this to test if any number divides by 3. Let’s test 71865. 7+1+8+6+5 = 27 which divides by 3, so 71865 also divides by 3.

The Table Attack Game Try to play this game with your children regularly in short bursts of about 10 minutes. You need two or more people and a pack of playing cards. Remove the jacks, queens and kings from the pack and put them back in the box. Now take the aces, twos, fives and tens from the pack, and just one joker. The aces count as one and the

By Kjartan Poskitt

joker counts as zero. Put the other cards aside for a moment. We’ll call these the power cards. Shuffle the 17 normal cards then put the pack face down. Two players each take a card from the top without looking and then together they turn their cards faceup. Players must multiply the numbers on the cards together, and the first person to shout the right answer wins a point. Make sure you are multiplying and not adding! (So if you see 5 and 1, the answer is five not six.) Now make it more exciting! Without looking, pick a couple of the power cards and slip them in with the others, then play again. Once you’ve got used to the extra cards, keep adding a few more power cards until you have all the cards in play. This is a fabulous, quick fire way to get your children to firm up on their times tables. There – I hope some of these things help. And just to make you feel better, while you’re practising your numbers, I’m going to go off and eat some broccoli! Kjartan Poskitt is author of the series of books Murderous Maths, published by Scholastic. He is also the Ambassador for the National Young Mathematicians’ Awards, the only team maths competition for primary schools in the country, run by Explore Learning in collaboration with the NRICH project at the University of Cambridge.

Education & Schools

A

s a parent or carer, you want to give your child the best start in life and you play a crucial role in supporting your child’s learning before school and throughout their time in education. Research is clear that levels of parental engagement are also consistently associated with better learning outcomes. At no point is parental engagement more important than in the early years. They are a vital time in the life of any child and play a significant role in shaping the person they will become and the opportunities in life they will have. It is also a critical, and often difficult, time for parents, trying to balance the wellbeing and development of their child with the need to provide financial stability, and especially for first time parents, with the emotional and practical complexities that can accompany the joys of parenting. Unfortunately, the early years are where we first see the attainment gap – the difference in educational outcomes between young

people from the least welloff backgrounds and their classmates – first take hold. There is already a big gap in the school readiness of less well-off children and their more advantaged classmates when they start school: five year olds from economically disadvantaged homes are estimated to be over four months behind their peers. This link between family income and attainment, even among young children, is clear-cut, long-standing, and difficult to break. But there is nothing inevitable about this trajectory. The best research we have provides a much more hopeful message. As a parent, your occupation, education and family income matter less to your child’s intellectual and social development than what you actually do with your child. In short, parenting can trump background. Research by charity, the Sutton Trust, has found that good parenting and a supportive home environment are more important determinants of good levels of learning at

How Parental Engagement Improves Learning By Stephen Fraser

age 5 than family income. It also found that most children with a good level of learning at age 5 are read to every day, taken to places of interest, and given regular bed times. Evidence from our Early Years Toolkit suggests that effective parental engagement can lead to learning gains of around four months over the course of a year. This shows what is possible. Challenges, of course, remain. Many parents, as well as being time-poor, may lack confidence in their own reading, writing and maths skills. Some parents may have had negative experiences at school that have an impact on how well they can engage in their own child’s learning. But there are simple, practical and evidencebased steps that parents can take to support their child’s development. And the most effective approaches are often the most obvious daily stories, teaching them songs and nursery rhymes, and playing with letters and numbers. These are all proven to help children discover the joy of learning. This, in turn, will help close the early attainment gap.
