Cranmore School Unveils Exciting Plans to Become Fully Co-educational Cranmore School has recently unveiled plans for the school to become fully co-educational in stages from September 2016, marking an exciting development as the school approaches its fiftieth anniversary. Cranmore School is widely regarded as one of the leading and top performing prep schools in the southeast with consistently outstanding inspection reports. Having established a strong co-educational Nursery, it initially began welcoming girls up to the age of seven to the school in September 2014. This remarkable announcement means the school will now become fully co-educational in phases, beginning in September 2016, when girls aged seven are invited to join Year 3 and then progress through the school until Year 8. The school views this move as universally beneficial to all members of its community and the announcement is fully supported by the entire governing body which includes six former parents, two of whom are previous pupils. “We shall build on the past successes of the school – academic, sport, music and other pursuits – and we believe that teaching girls and boys together will strengthen the educational and social benefit to all children in this distinctive community”, said Michael Connolly, Headmaster at Cranmore since 2006. Cranmore School passionately believes in the wide and well-researched benefits of co-education, particularly as a way to prepare pupils for the ever-evolving demands and trends of the working and adult world. Cranmore School is hosting two Open Mornings on Friday 25 September and Saturday 3 October. For more information about the school, and to register for the Open Mornings, please visit www.cranmoreprep.co.uk, call 01483 280340 or email admissions@cranmoreprep.co.uk

Water Babies Launch New Classes in Ewshot and Bordon Water Babies, who already offer baby swimming classes in Addlestone, Cobham, Godalming, Farnham, West Horsley and Woking are now launching their popular classes in Ewshot and Bordon. They have secured the use of a lovely private pool in Ewshot and the hydrotherapy pool at Hollywater School, Bordon - both are the perfect temperature for baby swimming. Classes in Ewshot run on Wednesday afternoons and in Bordon on Friday afternoons. Melissa, who runs the local classes says “Babies have a real affinity with water because they’ve spent 9 months floating in the womb. However, this early confidence usually diminishes with time which is one of the main reasons why we believe in starting them young. We always incorporate lots of bonding, fun and socialising in our classes, so you can be sure that a Water Baby is a happy baby.” Water Babies are currently offering a free swim nappy for new customers when they sign up for the next term at any of their venues! For more information about any of their classes please contact Melissa on 01932 227 428 or email underthewaves@waterbabies.co.uk.

Dad’s in charge

By Judy Yorke

New rules have completely changed the way parents can take time off after having a baby Shared Parental Leave regulations give eligible parents across the UK flexibility to juggle childcare between them. After a compulsory two weeks off for the mother, parents can share up to 50 weeks of leave in the baby’s first year (or the first year of adoption). The law applies to same sex couples and those bringing up a child together, even if it’s from a previous relationship. How you split the leave is up to you. It will depend on who earns more, who feels their career will be least affected by taking time off, and who wants to be at home. Significantly, for the first time, dads can take all or most of the year off while mums return to work. The leave can be taken in blocks (up to three each) so you can alternate time off if one of you has a particularly busy time at work before resuming parental leave. One big advantage is that parents can be off at the same time. Many mums need their partner’s support in those first magical, exhausting, bewildering weeks and can dread their partner going back to work after a fortnight. Finances will play an important part in the decision. While you can share up to 50 weeks, only 37 are paid. You will receive £139.58 per week or 90% of your average weekly earnings, whichever is lower. See more on www.gov.uk/government/topical-events/shared-parental-leave. Journalist Judy Yorke has written for many titles including the Daily Mirror, Closer and Woman. She lives in Brighton with her family.

Family Life

When baby makes three....

By Wendy Flynn

As a new mum, tired, busy, possibly having returned to work, short of time and money, the idea that not only do you have to look after your baby but that your adult partner also needs your attention could be like a red rag to a bull. That’s certainly how I felt as a new mum when a relative dared to suggest I needed to give more time to my partner. But, before you have a rant at the unfairness of being burdened with yet another responsibility when you are feeling overwhelmed, pause for a minute.

A

s a couple you are looking forward to the arrival of the new baby and you have never felt as close as you do now contemplating future life as a real family. But what many couples don’t realise is quite how much their lives can be turned upside down by this pint-sized new arrival... Your mewling ‘bundle of joy’ is now calling all the shots demanding to be fed, winded, bathed, cuddled and entertained and your time is no longer your own. As a couple you promised yourselves that having a baby wouldn’t change your lifestyle but, however organised and efficient you have always been, you are now sailing in uncharted territory and at times you probably feel rudderless. Both you and your partner adore the baby and are keen to be the best possible parents and that is where you focus all your energies. But, as Denise Knowles of Relate advises, in the excitement and exhaustion of life as new parents, you must also carve out time for your other half and nurture your own relationship as a couple. Denise suggests: “Sometimes a mum or dad can feel neglected or pushed out. Generally, new dads want to be involved much more than we really appreciate, or sometimes mums feel they have to do it all.” The pressure to be the perfect parent, combined with sleep deprivation, and possibly growing resentment by a mother who feels she is carrying most of the weight, or a dad who feels he is being pushed out, can put a strain on many relationships. Denise warns that unless couples work through any issues arising from the new family dynamic, cracks can start appearing in their relationship reaching a crisis point eighteen months or two years down the road.

According to Denise, who has counselled many couples at Relate, communication and staying in touch (literally as well as figuratively) with your other half is key to keeping the spark alive in your relationship and working through the inevitable teething problems of being a new family. “One of the things I want to say is ‘don’t lose touch with one another’. Even if you don’t have a great deal of time, spend some time together. Don’t feel guilty about postponing the washing, ironing or cleaning to create time for being a couple.” “Take time to hug or cuddle one another; and think about giving your partner a gift on a daily basis. I’m not talking about going out and buying a present – just something simple like paying them a compliment, or noticing that they are tired and offering to make them a cup of tea. Have a date night (even if you stay in). You can light some candles and phone for a takeaway so no one is stressed with cooking and washing up.

Trusted Support Denise adds: “It is important to be able to develop trusted support networks so that you can leave the baby even if it is only to pop out together for an hour for a walk. It doesn’t cost you money but it gives you the space and privacy to really talk to one another. Don’t always talk about the baby. Remember that you are a person in your own right and don’t forget your own dreams and aspirations.” Denise recommends that as well as finding couples time, the most contented parents will also find ways of allowing each other some space for individual interests and time to maintain their own friendships. “To be a good parent you need to be true to yourself,” she says.

For a start this cuts both ways, parents need to look after one another as well as looking after the baby – there is balance here and shared responsibility. If you still think you have not got time to look after your partner – ‘he/she is an adult after all’ – then you should reflect a little on some sobering statistics. Forty two per cent of marriages end in divorce; and half of divorces involve children under 16. Between a fourth and an eighth wedding anniversary, a couples chances of

getting divorced the next year is more than 3 per cent. So if, ideally, you would like to grow old with your other half it is worth breaking through the fog that accompanies new parenthood and thinking about how to improve your chances of celebrating a golden anniversary. Don’t lose sight of your relationship and stay in touch with your feelings for one another. It might seem like an eternity away, but your babies will soon fly the nest while your partner can still be there for you. If you are having problems in a relationship you can approach Relate for counselling. They offer online counselling and support as well as seeing couples or individuals. You can get relationship support as an individual even if your partner does not want to attend counselling. You can contact Relate by telephone or email on 01483 602998 or at info@relatewestsurrey.org.uk to make an appointment or for further information. Or you can check their website at www.relatewestsurrey. org.uk or on Twitter and Facebook.

Helping Your Child with Maths

By Rob Eastaway Get ready for a maths test. Don’t worry, it doesn’t involve quadratic equations, and you won’t need a slide rule or even a pencil and paper. You just need to imagine that a 10 year old girl has asked you for help with her homework.

Been there, done that!

By Liat Hughes-Joshi

Mistakes parents make when they’re new to school life 1.

Complaining to the teacher based on what your child told you happened…only it didn’t… your child tells you X did Y, you march in demanding answers from the teacher, only to discover that what your little one reported wasn’t actually correct. Stay open-minded until you find out the facts from all concerned.

2.

Sweating the small stuff - try to not get obsessed with reading levels, who got the hardest spellings and the like. It won’t go on their CVs after all. As long as they’re enjoying school and learning, that’s what matters most.

3.

Getting embroiled in school gate competitiveness - engaging with competitive parents is a lose-lose situation.

4.

Not helping at school…or doing so for the wrong reasons. Volunteering in the classroom or for the Parent Teacher Association will help you make friends and feel part of the school community.

5.

Fretting about fall-outs - reception children switch friends quicker than you can ask ‘who’s your best buddy now?’. It’s completely normal and bust-ups are quickly forgotten.

6.

Tackling other parents about problems between the children - even if your protective instincts kick in, don’t head over to give the other mum what for. She probably won’t agree that her child is to blame and parental fall-outs can endure long after the kids forget. Speak with the teacher instead.

7.

Losing sight of the fact the teacher has lots of pupils to look after - at ‘big school’, you aren’t going to get the daily chat with staff you might be used to at nursery or with childminders. Assume ‘no news is good news’.

8.

Expecting your child to be chatty and delighted to see you at 3pm - with so much to learn, by home time many reception kids are exhausted. Go with lots of early nights during the first term.

9.

Focusing on academic rather than practical skills before they start - ask reception teachers what they’d like their new charges to be proficient at and it probably won’t be about letters or numbers. What’s more important to settling in is for your child to be able to dress and undress for PE, use the loo independently and maybe recognise their name on their coat peg/belongings.

Which of the following would you be able to explain to her? Partitioning, Number Bonds, Multiplication with the grid method, Arrays, Division using chunking. You probably found that tough. In fact, I’m prepared to bet that, however good you think you are at maths, you scored very low in that test. Most parents and grandparents score zero, which is a bit worrying given that this terminology is now commonplace in primary schools across the UK. I’ve always been confident in maths, but even I was intimidated by the new teaching methods. When my daughter started primary school, I was annoyed too because I realised that when it came to explaining how to do things, I was stuck with methods that would mean nothing to her. I was reminded of a friend who sat down to help his son with long division, only for the boy to run off to mum screaming “Dad isn’t helping, he’s just confusing me!” So now that I have got to grips with the new methods and language, what advice can I give you? First of all, relax. Like all jargon, this new language is intimidating, but the methods behind it aren’t actually new at all. One mother, who was terrified about having to learn ‘grid multiplication’ discovered with great relief that it was actually very similar to an improvised method she used herself. Secondly, remember that maths is far more than just the arithmetic children learn at school. It’s the maths they learn while playing board games and helping with the cooking or shopping, which really gives children a sense of numbers and how they fit in the real world. One day, your kids are playing Monopoly, the next they are looking for the best interest rate deals available, or working out the hidden charges on their mobile phone contract! For those most comfortable with the traditional shorthand methods of long multiplication and division, the good news is that those methods ARE still taught, usually after children have been introduced to the other more intuitive methods. In fact, one of the legacies of Michael Gove’s period as Education Minister is that oldfashioned arithmetic – including knowing times tables up to twelve – is once again knowledge required by all children when they leave primary school. So children will still be expected to do things like ‘borrow one and then pay it back.’ In the end, the most important thing is that your child becomes confident in dealing with numbers. The more they enjoy the maths that they do, the more they will practise, and the better they will get. By the time they are 18, few of them will be using long multiplication or any other written method – they’ll be working things out in their heads or using a calculator, like you do. But they will have gained a deeper understanding of numbers and problem-solving along the way, which will be essential in their adult life. Rob Eastaway is co-author of Maths for Mums & Dads published by Square Peg (Penguin Random House) RRP £10.99.

Liat Hughes Joshi is a parenting journalist and the author of four books including 'New Old-fashioned Parenting' and 'How to Unplug Your Child' (both published by Summersdale) and Raising Children: The Primary Years (Pearson).

Things to Consider When Choosing an Independent School »»

Firstly, try and visit the school on a normal day as well as an open day, especially if the open day is on a Saturday and the children aren’t in class.

»» »»

Does the school offer any bursaries or scholarships?

»»

Do you want a single sex or a mixed school? For both sides of the debate see www.familiessurreywest.co.uk/choosingaschool.

»»

»»

Look at the facilities, but remember that the teachers are the most important part of a school so make sure you see lessons in progress and ask about staff turnover - some movement is healthy, bringing fresh ideas: too much indicates dissatisfaction and can be disrupting.

If you are a working parent ask about wrap around care and how flexible this is, can you book into after school care the week or day before? Do they run a holiday camp in the school holidays and what hours does it run?

»»

Do you want a school that goes all the way through to GCSEs and A-Levels/International Baccalaureate, or would you like your child to go to a prep school that doesn’t have a senior school? Which schools/ universities do children go on to?

»»

Remember to do the journey in the morning rush hour to see how long it takes when considering a school a bit further from home.

»»

When you visit, look at the pupils in the final year or two, as these are the product of the school. If you are shown round by a pupil, ask them lots of questions as you will often get an honest answer - such as “what one thing could the school improve?”.

»»

16

Does the school have an active PTA, and what sort of social activities does it organise? ®

Surrey West

»» »» »» »» »» »»

What extra curricular activities are offered - are they at lunchtime or after school?

What is the communication like with parents, it’s important you know who to talk to if you have a problem or concern. Who is responsible for pastoral care? What are the class sizes, are children streamed and at what age and in what subjects? At the top end of the school are they taught by subject specialists? How do they treat/identify special needs children on both ends of the spectrum? Enquire about the extra help available for children who are above or below average in a particular subject. Has the ‘Jamie Oliver effect’ reached the lunch menu? Look for a sample menu and ask pupils what they think of the school food. Listen to the Head’s address if there is one and talk to him or her too. A good school will have an inspiring, enthusiastic and committed headteacher, supported by a loyal and united management team. Remember to visit schools early, as some can get booked up.

Cranmore School

St Catherine’s

Cranmore School enjoys a remarkable reputation as one of Surrey’s leading schools for boys. It has announced that it will become fully co-educational, welcoming girls and boys from aged 2½ to 13. Cranmore was awarded the top grade in every category for its most recent inspection.

Situated in the village of Bramley just 3 miles south of Guildford, St Catherine’s enjoys extensive grounds, with views over the surrounding Surrey Hills.

Headmaster, Michael Connolly, commented “We are implementing this change from a position of strength. Increasingly parents want their sons and daughters to be educated together and we feel sure that Cranmore is well placed to deliver an outstanding education for both boys and girls.” The school has been commended for its academic reputation, excellent facilities and high quality music and sport. The school anticipates a strong demand for places in the next academic year. Interested families should look at the website (www. cranmoreprep.co.uk) and contact the school to arrange a personal visit so that they can learn more about this exciting development. Email: admissions@cranmoreprep.co.uk or call: 01483 280340.

Girls in the Prep School benefit immeasurably from being an integral part of the St Catherine’s School which has a large day and boarding community from 11. At the heart of the school’s pastoral life is the historic 19th century chapel where regular services are held, led by the school’s Chaplain. St Catherine’s has always prided itself on its outstanding pastoral care which informs every interaction within the Prep School. The relationships which are built between the girls and their teachers are key to the success, both academic and personal, of the girls. The school encourages girls to develop a love of learning and to cultivate their creativity through dance, music and art. The wealth of sporting opportunities available, including the use of the school’s own swimming pool, allows girls to achieve at the highest level. ‘Everyone walks out feeling valued for who they are.’ ‘This is as good as it gets.’ Good Schools Guide.
