The inaugural charity ball being held on March 5 at the Crowne Plaza in Marlow sold all 300 tickets to the event last October.

The ball is raising money in memory of an exceptional eight-year-old girl, Grace Duggan. She was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour just a few weeks after her 7th birthday and died of treatment-related side effects in December 2014.

The event is to celebrate her life and raise money for two excellent charities.

Blue Skye Thinking (blueskyethinking.org), which is raising money for much needed research in to childhood brain tumours, to find less harsh and more effective treatments. The second charity is Sebastian’s Action Trust (sebastiansactiontrust.org.uk), a local charity, who work alongside families of seriously ill children from the point of diagnosis, through treatment and beyond.

Local companies and charities have been extremely generous in donating raffle and auction prizes. Including Perfect Friday Wine, Doodle’s Den, Elements in Henley, Spear Reflexology and the Papercup Kitchen to name a few.

Big Garden Birdwatch Last year over half a million people took part in the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch, spotting more than 8.5 million birds across the UK, and the organisers are hoping this year's watch will be a record-breaking event.

This year's survey takes part on 30 and 31 January. To take part, simply spend one hour counting the birds in your garden or local park, and record the highest number of each bird species seen at any one time. The morning is the best time to look, when the birds are out and about feeding after a cold winter night.

Alzheimer’s Research UK has created a website called ‘Dementia Explained’ to help young people better understand dementia.

The website, www.dementiaexplained.org, provides child-friendly dementia information focusing on the ways people with dementia can change and the effect this can have on families. It brings together a range of resources including stories narrated by broadcaster Edith Bowman, videos and interactive games and allows young people to discover more about the brain, how it is affected by diseases like Alzheimer’s and share their experiences to help others.

The Firestation’s future is still in doubt The Royal Borough has announced that the council-owned arts centre at The Old Court in St Leonards Road, Windsor is not under threat of closure. However the current providers of the arts service, Firestation Arts & Culture CIC may not remain the organisation that delivers the service after September 2016.

They have decided to put the arts provision service out to tender after the shock announcement in December that they may not renew the current tenancy agreement in March 2016 with the Firestation.

Cllr Claire Stretton, principal member for culture and communities, said: “We have no intention whatsoever of closing The Old Court, or of relocating arts provision elsewhere…”

“The Old Court will most definitely remain as a community space for community arts activities – we are fully committed to this, in keeping with the spirit of the trust which was established when the venue first opened as an arts centre.”

The council has agreed to extend the Firestation’s current lease and grant arrangements until 30 September 2016, while the formal procurement process is undertaken.

Dan Eastmond, Managing Director of the Firestation said: " I am pleased that the Borough has decided to adopt a more reasonable timetable and heartened to see the community vocalising the importance of what we do here so passionately. I remain shocked and disappointed by the decision to go out to tender, but at least now there is time for the process to be run fairly.”

News & Info ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted for Sunninghill Nursery

New Warning About Processed Meats Media attention has once again focused on processed meats as a potential cause of cancer.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that processed meat such as bacon, ham and sausages do cause cancer. They say that less than a couple of slices of bacon a day – 50g – can increase the risk of cancer of the colon by 18%.

Though meat can have some health benefits, the processes used to preserve meats such as curing, smoking, adding preservatives and salting have been shown to be carcinogenic. Unprocessed red meat, says WHO, is “probably carcinogenic” but there was less clear evidence. Cooking meats to a high temperature, such as on a barbecue, is also carcinogenic.

Flu jab being shunned The number of people in the UK who have decided to have the flu jab has fallen alarmingly. Doctors are worried that this could lead to a sharp rise in cases of flu in vulnerable groups, such as the elderly.

The 6% fall in take-up may be due to the mild autumn weather and the media stories about last year’s flu jab being in some cases ineffectual, according to the Royal College of General Practitioners.

Last year’s variety of flu mutated, meaning that the vaccine was not as effective as it should have been. Those who may be at most risk of complications from flu, such as those with underlying health problems, pregnant women and the elderly, should be encouraged to take up the vaccine.

Health advice would now seem to say that the occasional bacon or ham sandwich would not be harmful but that frequent consumption is not good for you.

Staff at Sunninghill Day Nursery are celebrating being awarded an Outstanding under the new Ofsted Common Inspection Framework last December.

Stagecoach Maidenhead launches new classes A theatre school in Maidenhead has launched new classes on a Friday and all day on a Saturday at Manor Green School in Maidenhead.

Pupils stepped into the spotlight at the Adelphi Theatre in London's theatre land last December.

The students were joined by hundreds of performers from Stagecoach Theatre Arts schools across the country at the Adelphi Theatre on London’s Strand. The theatre is well known for hosting the hit West End show, ‘Kinky Boots’.

Stagecoach Theatre Arts Maidenhead is part of a network of more than 600 part-time Theatre Arts Schools worldwide. Early Stages classes are available for children aged 4 to 6 and Main Stages classes take place for 6 to 18 year olds.

How to Read With Your Child – And Really Enjoy It

6. Books without text are brilliant for sharing – encourage your toddler to tell you what is happening.

“Not now, darling...” is the plaintive refrain from parents when you’ve just put your feet up and your little one demands you read with them.

7. At the library, suggest that each of you choose a title.Your special task is to discover one they’ve never seen before.

1. Celebrate the knowledge that reading with your child is part of your job description as a parent. The more you do it, the easier it becomes.

8. When shopping together, don’t expect a young child to choose the ‘right’ book.You decide. Once they can actually read, allow them to choose their own books.

2. For babies, choose books YOU like. They are too small to understand much but the cadence of your voice gives them comfort.

9. Books for bedtime should be chosen by you and kept higher up on the shelves.

Make this a time for your child to listen and be calm and contented.

WHEN FRIENDS FALL OUT

How to help your child cope with playground arguments The dreaded playground squabble has struck, the tears are rolling and you’re unsure as to how to help...

Relax: it’s normal Ask primary school teachers and they’ll doubtless tell you that kids fall out (and in again) as quickly as a round of Hokey Cokey. It’s normal and most squabbles are soon forgotten: kids don’t bear grudges the way grown-ups tend to. Unfortunately this knowledge won’t console your heartbroken child much, so…

Reassure, hug and listen Even if it’ll probably blow over, your child might well feel like their world is collapsing. Give hugs, provide shoulders to cry on and tissues.

Help them to help themselves Once they’re calmer, instead of providing straight solutions, encourage your child to think through what they could do to resolve this, with guidance from you behind the scenes. If there’s been a misunderstanding, how could they instigate chat to explain?

If the other child is consistently mean to them, who else could they play with instead?

Resist the temptation to wade in!

Your parental instincts are urging you to tackle the little blighter concerned, or their parents, but hold back. Confronting the other child isn’t appropriate under any circumstances. Approaching their parents is a minefield too: they probably won’t accept their child has done anything wrong. Plus, chances are the children will make up, potentially leaving an awkward situation between the parents.

When to see their teacher…

If whatever happened involved physical violence, is persistent, and/ or your child starts not wanting to go to school, then do discuss it with their teacher. They can then keep a closer eye on the children.

See this as a learning experience There might have been tears but chances are your child will have learnt more about relationships and friendships along the way.

Marlow primary school wins £5,000 award A OneFamily Foundation community award has been won by the Danesfield School after a public vote, with the money funding longlasting, but moveable outdoor equipment, that will be used across teaching in maths, literacy, art, music and role play.

The equipment is specially designed to facilitate play in a safe environment, and will include musical pieces, tables and water equipment. All of the equipment selected will aid the health and personal development of key stage one pupils.

The OneFamily Foundation is a unique customer benefit fund, provided by the mutual organisation, OneFamily, which intends to make £5million available to its members over five years to make their lives and communities better.

Should All School Staff Have First Aid Training?

Teachers at a school in York did not realise when they went on a first aid training course that they would use their newly learned skills just a few months later.

When a 15-year-old boy, Alex, collapsed after suffering a cardiac arrest in a PE class, his teacher Shona Jagger and the school’s matron, Erica Melsom, came to his aid with their skills and a defibrillator.

CPR training is only taught in a quarter of schools but the British Heart Foundation says that it would like mandatory CR training in all schools. bhf.org.uk

Great Maths Teaching “Will Take A Decade” A report from the Advisory Council on Mathematics Education (ACME) says that it will take at least ten years before maths teachers are qualified as well as they should be.

The report recommends that teachers should have better training and higher qualifications. This includes primary teachers, who the report proposes should have maths A-level or equivalent.

It also recommends that more maths graduates teach the subject at secondary level, and if there are none available then students of economics could be encouraged to become maths teachers.

However the general secretary of the National Union of Teachers, Russell Hobby, says that schools should be recruiting now and that ten years is too long to wait: “The children in the system today won’t see the benefits before they leave school. The effectiveness of recruitment needs to be addressed immediately. For the teachers there in the system today, it’s vital that they have access to proper professional development to increase their experience.”

Choose an activity you enjoy. Try out a few different classes and then pick the one you like the most. Try to include something that gets your heart racing, something stretchy and something that involves weights.

As soon as Christmas Day is over, holiday and weight loss advertisements start to appear on the Television.

Take the kids with you. Go to a local park with scooters and bikes and baby in a pushchair and walk around the outside of the park.

Let's be realistic, the first few weeks returning to work are tough. You thought the sleepless nights, the endless washing, feeding and entertaining were rough, but seriously things are about to go to another level! All the plans you put into place are now about to be challenged and work itself will start to feel like a rest. Fitness expert Sarah El-Hawary from Go Figure gives some advice on how to make time for you.

There are pros and cons to returning to work and arguments for and against it. Just remember children are resilient and learn by example. The best thing you can do is plan for every eventuality and roll with it. The childcare, the meals, the clothes, the transport, the housework, the 'just in case' scenarios.You may think you have all the boxes ticked but…Wrong!

Where in the planning have you thought about yourself? It’s time to be selfish. It’s time to find the women that existed pre-children; the woman who took time to take care of herself, eat right, dress well, and exercise.

So ladies how to we get from here to there? The following action plan will put you on track.

Day 1: Take ten minutes to sort your clothes out. Remember your body shape will have changed, so be ruthless and throw out everything that doesn’t fit. And no, it won’t fit in six months time either, because in six months time you are going to have a new body, just in time for summer.

Day 2: Have a look at your body and decide what you like about it and what you would like to change. This change won’t happen overnight, but it’s definitely worth the effort.

Day 3: Make time to go shopping for some new clothes. It doesn’t have to cost the earth, and very often just one item of clothing can make all the difference to how you see yourself.

Day 4: Stop making excuses, take 10 minutes a day to banish the bulge.Yes I know it doesn’t seem like much, but let's start small and achieve this goal consistently.

Day 5: Sit down with your partner and discuss the changes that are about to happen, your fears, your worries and your hopes. Also use this time to book in a regular date night.Yes, I know it sounds corny, but you are both worth the effort. Join a babysitting circle.

Day 6: Try out the routine before you start work. This will give you time to iron out the kinks.

Day 7: Don’t forget to be kind to yourself. Look at everything you have achieved in the last 18 months, while still remaining relatively sane and remember...

Did you know that brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer? Yet brain tumour research receives just 1% of the national spend on cancer research.

The blood-brain barrier stops most standard cancer drugs from treating brain tumours, making them more difficult to combat. Research into this area is being lead by Professor Geoff Pilkington, lead scientist at one of Brain Tumour Research’s centres of excellence at the University of Portsmouth. Professor Pilkington is an international expert on brain tumours and a pioneer in blood-brain barrier research, having created the world's first 'all-human' blood-brain barrier model to help with their studies.

Brain Tumour Research has launched the Grand Challenge, a unique fundraising partnership with the Dr Hadwen Trust. The aim is to jointly raise 180,000 to fund a three-year research project being led by Professor Pilkington into the blood brain barrier.

HOW TO PREVENT YOUR CHILD FROM CHOKING

Babies and toddlers are curious and explore the world by putting things in their mouths – it’s a natural part of their development. Children under eight years have much narrower windpipes than adults, and are still learning to chew, swallow and breathe in the right order, which makes them far more susceptible to choking.

Toddler Jacob Jenkins died in hospital in November last year, five days after choking on a grape. Unfortunately, Jacob’s death was not an isolated tragedy. Choking is a leading cause of accidental death in under-5s and only 2 weeks after, Thomas Ford choked on a blackberry while he was out on a walk with his parents and older sister near their home in Norfolk.

Food is the most common cause of choking. As a parent and carer it’s vital to learn about choking prevention as soon as possible.

Choking Prevention Choking can be prevented.

Be alert for small objects. Check regularly for small items that children could find and put in their mouths. The following are common household choking hazards: • Latex Balloons • Coins • Buttons • Marbles, small balls or ball-shaped objects • Toys with small parts or toys that can be squeezed to fit entirely into a child's mouth • Pen or marker lids • Small button-type batteries • Refrigerator magnets • Pieces of dog food Risky Foods for Young Children Food accounts for over 50% of choking episodes. Children younger than 4 years of age should not be given round, firm foods unless they have been chopped into small pieces. The following foods are common choking hazards: • Hot dogs and sausages • Nuts and seeds

• Chunks of meat and cheese • Whole grapes and fruit chunks, like apples • Hard, gooey, or sticky sweets • Popcorn • Chunks of peanut butter • Raw vegetables, such as carrots • Chewing gum • Marshmallows Prevention Tips Learn first aid for choking and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation).

Always supervise mealtimes.

Children should never run, walk, play or lie down with food in their mouths.

Cut food for young children into small pieces Be aware of older children's actions. Choking incidents can occur when an older child gives dangerous foods, toys or small objects to a younger child.

Avoid toys with small parts and keep small household items out of the reach of infants and young children.

Check the minimum age recommendations on toy packages. Age guidelines reflect the safety of a toy based on potential choking hazards as well as children's development.

Be aware that latex balloons pose a choking risk to both young children and older children.

Do not allow young children to play with coins.

+ First Aid A person who is choking with a full airway obstruction may display the following emergency signs: • unable to speak • unable to cough • unable to make noise • unable to breathe • blue tint to the lips, skin, or nails from lack of oxygen • Become unresponsive and show no signs of breathing.

Give 5 back blows. Laid down with the head below the chest. Give 5 sharp slaps, between the shoulder blades. (1a & 1b) 2. Give 5 chest thrusts. Push firmly in the centre of the breastbone. Use 2 fingers for a baby and the palm of your hand for a child. (2a) 3. Try 5 abdominal thrusts (pictured) instead of chest thrusts if the child is too big to pass over your lap (do NOT do this in babies). Push firmly inwards and upwards in a ‘J’ motion, just below the ribs. This can be done standing (2b).

Know the signs of choking A person who is choking may cough continuously until the food or liquid is expelled from the throat or airway. However, in some cases the object, food, or liquid becomes lodged in the throat, cutting off the air supply.

Faulty or poorly maintained gas appliances, such as boilers, can have disastrous and deadly consequences.

According to Gas Safe and NHS stats: • Faulty appliances caused 40 deaths and over 200 hospital admissions last year.

• 5.5 million Brits fail to get an annual gas safety check.

•There were 67,000 gas emergency call outs last year in the UK. • 1 in 6 gas appliances were found to be unsafe (based on 142,000 homes).

• 28% of people didn’t even check if the engineer was Gas Safe registered.

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Carbon monoxide is produced when fuels such as gas, oil, coal or wood do not burn fully. When a fire burns in an enclosed space, the oxygen is gradually used up and replaced with carbon dioxide. The fuel is unable to burn fully and releases carbon monoxide.

After breathing in carbon monoxide, it enters your bloodstream and mixes with haemoglobin (the part of red blood cells

that carry oxygen around your body), to form carboxyhaemoglobin. When this happens, the blood is no longer able to carry oxygen, and this lack of oxygen causes the body’s cells and tissue to die.

Symptoms Carbon monoxide is difficult to detect because it has no smell, taste or colour.

This means you can inhale it without realising.

The 6 main symptoms to look out for are: • Headaches • Dizziness • Nausea • Breathlessness • Collapse • Loss of Consciousness If you googled these symptoms then you would find a number of illnesses that matched. However if you only feel like this when you are at home, and others feel

these effects whilst in your home, then it may be carbon monoxide poisoning.

How to SURVIVE A SLEEPOVER PARTY

Love them or hate them, at some point you’ll be asked to host a sleepover. Sarah Butters looks at how best to survive them.

DROP LATE, COLLECT EARLY The thought of a sleepover is bearable if you know there’s an end to it all. Make it clear at the point of invite when your hospitality begins and ends. I’ve found a late-afternoon drop – coinciding with teatime – is best with a pick-up between 9am and 10am. This means your exhausted guests, now suffering from an additive hangover, can have their post-sleepover meltdown in the comfort of their own home.

You’re left with a full day to scrape melted chocolate and squashed Haribo from your beige carpet.

HAVE A PLAN Don’t imagine a handful of eight year olds will be able to occupy themselves without incident.

They won’t. Well they will, but rest assured it will end in a lot of tired tears. Follow teatime with a fun activity – karaoke, Wii fun or a board game – before a DVD to take you through until bedtime. I’ve heard reports of parents putting their children through an obstacle course in the garden prior to heading upstairs to maximise exhaustion but you may feel that’s a step too far.

CALL IN THE CAVALRY Turn to our party directory from page 16 to 19 for some additional party and entertainment ideas.You could combine the sleepover with a

crafty art session or have a living room disco with a party entertainer. Why not take them all to a Trampoline arena for a big jump session to ensure they are all too tired to stay up late!

PREPARE FOR LATE-NIGHT LEAVERS There’s a pretty high chance that one of your guests will want to leave. The reality of a night spent away from home can be a little too much for some children. Be warned, homesickness is catching and once one begins to wobble, you could find your other guests follow. Make sure you have the parents’ contact details for all your guests if you do need to make a late-night collection call.

KEEP IT SIMPLE Think camping indoors and you’ve got the perfect sleepover. One of my daughter’s favourite nights away from home saw seven children sleeping top to toe, in sleeping bags on the bedroom floor of their friend. Not a kingsize Aerobed in sight.

ADMIT DEFEAT You aren’t going to be able to stay up late enough to check your guests are all asleep. Their main aim is to out ‘stay up’ the adults in the house so in many ways reminding them you’re still awake only makes for a later bedtime. Lay out the ground rules when you say your final (ish)

Plan a Party goodnight and leave them to it. Some will fall asleep, some will chat and only in the very worst case scenario will they raid your sweet cupboards in the early hours to replenish their sleep-starved bodies. Removal of electrical devices is a good move – especially in tweenage girls – as the cyber world can be an inviting but frightening place in the small hours of the morning.

KEEP YOUR DIARY CLEAR Plan nothing for the following day.You will have slept like a meerkat balancing on a branch.Your child will have crashed late and woken with the lark. In short, your family is fit for nothing and planning even the most straightforward activity is doomed to failure. Then, as night falls, raise a glass to the fact you survived your first sleepover. Like childbirth, you’ll need some time to forget the pain before you do it all again…

It seems like a great idea when you and a friend are daydreaming about your next holiday and it turns out you both want to hire a cottage in Cornwall. If you want to go away with both your families and share the costs of the holiday, read our tips to make this a holiday to remember – not a nightmare.

Us-time As there are other grown-ups with you, this would be an ideal opportunity to have some time alone with your partner. Take it in turns to look after all the children, so that each couple has some personal space.

A room of one’s own Make sure there’s room for you all to have some personal space. Even the best of friends can end up getting on each others’ nerves at times. Letting the kids sleep in the same room may backfire too, as they will be so excited that they may not get to sleep before the small hours.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing…

How well do you know the other family?

Are there areas of their life you find difficult to cope with? If you’re a neat freak and they are the kind to ignore mould on the milk bottle – or the other way around – you’re probably not going to get along with each others’ standards of housekeeping. Do you know what their politics are? And do your children get along?

Set the rules Make some ground rules. Set a budget and decide how you are going to share the price of the house and shopping once you are away. It’s best to share everything equally (easy if your families are the same size, otherwise work it out proportionately). Talk this all through before you go, as the last thing you want is an argument at the supemarket check-out!

All good friends Your partners also need to get on and you need to be friends as a foursome. The grown-ups need to be united if there are disputes between the children. Spend a day together in the run-up to the holiday

Doing the housework The chores will also have to be shared equally, so that nobody has to do all the cooking or all the washing up. Take it in turns and eat out a couple of times so that you all get a break.

So while there may be some things to consider before you embark on a holiday with friends, there are many advantages.

You can afford somewhere much nicer than you might otherwise have done, you can share chores and babysitting and you can forge lifelong friendships between both the adults and the children. With a little forethought, this will truly be a holiday to remember!

Natalie Trice contemplates the unrealistic expectations we can have about our lives in the New Year, and comes up with some much easier (and funnier) rules to live by.

W

e all know the eating an entire selection box, hiding your trainers and drinking cocktails all of December is ok because your New Year’s Resolutions will correct the damage in January.

Right?

I’m afraid not.

On January 1st you might vow to go vegan, become a Pilates princess and meditate every day, but when it’s freezing cold, times-tables are cracking you up and everyone has a cold (man flu for some), the resolutions will be binned and the cork screw will come out.

“I always start Weight Watchers in January and vow to go every week but it never lasts because I love my food and my curves”. Jo “The Zumba DVD I had as a Christmas present last year is still in the wrapper and has been sent as tombola prize for the school Christmas fayre”. Sue “A friend and I decided to give up wine last January for good, one night out we went out and forget all about it and woke up the next day with the hangovers to prove it.” Daisy I’ve been pondering this for a while and have come up with a few resolutions I think you will like, and more to the point, will all be able to keep.

• Ditch the scales and go by how your jeans feel. If they’re a bit snug, buy new ones.

• Add at least one bottle of fizz to the weekly shop - new research has shown that drinking Champagne can keep the memory sharp.

• Swap that organic spinach and lentil bake for bangers and mash – go on, I dare you!

• Find an exercise class or a personal trainer to work with that you actually look forward to. Exercise is supposed to be fun, not a chore.

• Have a wee without an audience. No toddler, no dog, not even teddy is allowed to be in the bathroom in 2016.

• Replace Minecraft and Cartoon Network with Facebook and Twitter on your phone.

• Speaking of social media – don’t believe the hype. The friends with perfect online lives in reality have Sharpie drawings on their ‘Elephant’s Breath’ walls, raisins in the bottom of their designer bags and wear their PJs under their coats when they go to the corner shop.

• Locate your nearest Cook and get a loyalty card.

• Swap the mint tea for a double shot espresso.

• Don’t put up with bad manners, inconsiderate behaviour and rudeness.

• Gossip, it’s great for the soul.

• Don’t stress the school run, get there late because being early is so 2015.

• Give up the gym - it smells of sweat and makes you so hungry you scoff a Mars bar on the drive home.

• Life’s too short to do chores - out-source them if you can afford it and do something different in 2016 instead.

The moral to this tale is to do more of what makes you really happy. It may be that eating quinoa and doing yoga every day really does make you feel better, but for others it’s having a glass of fizz and watching rubbish telly.

Either way a happy Mum = happy kids.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR CHILDREN SAFE ONLINE

2015 saw the most connected Christmas yet, with mobile phones, tablets, games consoles and connected toys featuring in children’s Christmas stockings up and down the country. Carolyn Bunting, General Manager of Internet Matters, tells families how to make sure your children are being safe and responsible online.

T

here’s a growing gulf in digital knowledge between parents and their children. The pace of change in technology is the fastest it has ever been - YouTube is only ten years old; Facebook is nine; Instagram is five; Snapchat is only four and Periscope is less than a year old.

These are brilliant and exciting services – but they also mean we now have the first generation of parents managing issues around their kids’ access and use of services they are completely unfamiliar with.

Parents now have a unique opportunity to increase their digital IQ, in order to help their children navigate the web in a safe and secure way.

New research by Internet Matters shows that while parents understand their Facebook, Google, WhatsApp, Twitter and Skype, there are a number social apps they rarely use or simply don’t get. These are the ones that children are predominantly using.

The research shows that 58% of children use Snapchat compared to14% of parents, and 56% of children use Instagram compared to 19% of parents. So let’s demystify what these latest apps are all about.

Advise your child to share content with their ‘real friends’ and only share things that they would be happy to share with you. Whilst the image ‘disappears’, many people know how to take a screen grab of it that they can share with anyone.

Instagram is also a photo and video sharing app that has over 400 million monthly users around the World. Although the minimum age for Instagram is 13, our research shows 67% 11-13 year olds have used this app. To keep them safe, ensure your child chooses a private account, which means they have to approve anyone who wants to follow them, and then talk to them about only accepting followers they know.

When they post pictures make sure they share either directly, with up to 15 friends, or privately to make sure posts aren’t shared publicly. They can do this in the edit your profile section.

In the app settings, turn off location services. This means they will not be sharing location information with any of their posts.

Parents can’t be expected to be tech gurus overnight, nor should they be. The web changes in an instant but one thing remains a constant - the need to protect our children.

Snapchat is a real-time photo and video sharing app. It averages 400 million ‘snaps’ a day and the minimum age to sign-up for an account is 13. Once a ‘snap’ (image) is posted, the user can choose how long the viewers can view it – from 1 to 10 seconds and then the image disappears. Users can also create ‘stories’, a string of photos and videos available for 24 hours. You can tailor who you post to and who you can receive snaps from – it’s designed for your children to share moments with friends.

However there is a danger that children can connect with people they don’t know.

It is vital that we build an understanding of what young people are doing online, and help them understand the risks that they may face. By encouraging open and frank conversations between parent and child about digital safety we can make the internet a safe and inspiring place for our children to play.

Having a baby is a costly business, and it’s not unusual for parents to spend thousands of pounds on kit before their baby even arrives. But the truth is, babies don’t really need that much stuff and what they do need you can often borrow from friends or buy second-hand.

Golden rules for buying on a budget: • You’ll need to invest in some necessities before your baby arrives, but you don’t need everything yet. Tell the world you’re pregnant - you’ll be amazed at what handme-downs come your way.

• Prepare a gift list, or exchange unwanted gifts for something useful.

• Hit eBay with a vengeance. Baby clothes and equipment often come in bundles, which are far cheaper than bidding for individual items.

• Only buy new if there is a safety issue involved.You can buy almost everything second-hand and as most baby gear is used for such a short period of time, things will be in surprisingly good nick. Look out for NCT sales, and if you live in a baby-centric area your local charity shop will be packed with prams, cots and highchairs.

• If your friends have children why not organise your own swapping event?

• Join recycling forum Freecycle or other swapping-buying-selling websites such as Nappy Valley or Gumtree.

• If you must buy new, go budget. Budget brands have to pass the same safety tests as the expensive ones and are often made by the same companies. Many supermarkets sell stylish baby clothes at a great price, and Ikea have brilliant nursery furniture. If you can't live without the expensive brands, go straight to the sale rail.

• Buy in bulk whenever you see a good offer (especially nappies!)

The gear you actually need: Sleeping Go for a cot-bed from the start, or decorate a basic cot to make it look like a designer one. While cots can be bought second-hand, current guidelines on preventing SIDS suggest that babies should sleep on new clean mattresses.

Baby sleeping bags are great but pricey so buy them second-hand or from the supermarket. Many mums think baby monitors are unnecessary but if you do want one, the £20 basic model is just as good as the all-singing, all-dancing variety Telephone: 01628 627 586

Whichever side you're on in the debate about green washable nappies, there's no doubt they work out cheaper - as long as you don't wash them at 90 degrees or tumble-dry. It can cost up to £1000 to keep a baby in disposable nappies until they are potty-trained, whereas using reusable nappies costs only a few hundred pounds for baby number one and even less when siblings come along. If you choose to use disposables buy the supermarket value ones, or stock up on premium brands when they’re on offer. If you go eco, buy in bulk from websites such as beamingbaby.co.uk.

Out-and-about Easily the most expensive piece of kit is a buggy, so look for decent models on a recycling site. Or go for a cheap one that folds up and is lightweight. Some Maclaren buggies still allow a newborn to lie flat Invest in a second-hand sling for as little as £10, or borrow one – an unbelievable number of mums buy slings brand new and never use them. Try babywearing.co.uk they organise sling meet-ups across the UK for mums to test-drive different slings.

Car seats CAN be bought second-hand but make sure you are confident that the seat has not been in an accident. Go for a convertible model that lasts from birth to 4 years. If you aren't sure about the car seat, do make sure you buy it new. Often grandparents want to contribute and the more expensive items like these, are the ones to ask for.

Feeding and changing Apart from a pram, cot and car seat, babies need very little - nappies, a few babygros (in neutral colours), a blanket, cardigan and hat. Don’t buy any other baby clothes – you’ll receive enough gifts when they’re born.

Save money by breastfeeding - bottlefeeding costs over £500 a year and that’s just the formula! If you do bottle-feed, save money by not investing in a steriliser and using boiling-water instead.You don’t need a bottle warmer either – use hot water or even better, get your baby used to roomtemperature feeds.You don’t need a highchair yet, and hopefully someone will lend you one by the time you do.

Mums Who Mean Business After spending time working for other photographers, Maria Ashby Giles took the plunge and set up on her own, creating a business that fits around family life.

Who you are and where do you live?

My name is Maria and I live in Maidenhead with my husband and two children. This is the town where I grew up, went to school and studied in. Although I planned as an adult to live by the sea, I actually married a fellow Maidonian and here is where the cycle started again.

Why did you set up the business?

After I returned from a long spell travelling a local photographer was looking for an assistant and second shooter for weddings and portraits. I had studied photography at Art College and really enjoyed it. This was back in the day of film when wedding photography was much more traditional and staid. This is where I cut my teeth and learned all about weddings and classic social photography. The move from film to

digital was the pivot for me as it gave me the tools to include my love to document into weddings and portraits.

What did you use to do?

After working for a few other photographers I realised that I wanted to work in a different way than they did. I wanted to provide a more personal and tailored service, to add flourish and extras while still maintaining the quality. The move coincided with starting a family and the business has grown with them but also fitting around their needs too.

What inspired you to set up the business?

I was lucky that my husband gave me a chunk of his savings to aid me in buying most of the equipment that I initially required. I already had a camera and lens

Who you are and where do you live?

My name is Sara Hill, and I live in Winchester.

Why did you set up the business/or why have you changed career?

In 2007 I found myself looking to return to work after taking a 2-year break to have my two children. I set about looking for a challenging role with flexibility so I could spend time with her young family.

What did you use to do?

I held senior roles in management consultancy (Ernst & Young, Stratevolve) and in industry (Montague,Virgin) in the UK and the US. I have extensive experience in developing and selling professional service consulting solutions within global organisations with in-depth knowledge of the talent, resourcing, flexible working and diversity arena.

What inspired you to set up the business?

Eventually, after a "roller coaster of a journey", I found the perfect role through my own network: a challenging part-time consulting role with a boutique strategy consultancy.

Although extremely happy with my new job, the seed of an idea had been sown.

On top of my personal experience, there was compelling research to show that 60% of highly qualified women and men wanted to work part time so they could remain in or progress in their careers. A lack of genuinely flexible senior opportunities combined with a national skills shortage

As well as wedding photography Maria also does family portraiture

but I needed a back up and new software, lights and studio equipment. For the first few years most of what I earned I invested back into the business, upgrading equipment and adding to my portfolio so I could expand into other areas of the business like Commercial and Business Portraits. I also decided to buy a car because at the time we only had one car, which made logistics quite complicated for a while. So for a while friends provided endless babysitting duties and were also called upon to carry bags, hold reflectors and act as drivers.

What are your plans for the future?

The future of my business is very exciting.

This year has been busy and I have ventured further into the corporate world shooting business/corporate headshots and images mainly for social media, Internet

and business reports. I have worked with many young dancers and this year I will be shooting more dance shows and working with dance schools for dancer portfolios. I have some amazing weddings already booked for 2016 & 2017, the diary is already filling up. I am looking to recruit a new assistant to accompany me on wedding shoots and to train up as a photographer, as well as a graphic designer/picture editor to work along side my office manager. Having both been through the adoption process, Berkshire mums Clare and Helen, used their experience in setting up The Cornerstone Partnership to help support and train prospective adoptive parents.

Who you are and where do you live?

We are two friends, Clare Brasier, mum of two, and Helen Costa, mum of two, both from Berkshire.

Why did you set up the business/or why have you changed career?

Clare says: “We both adopted our children.

Having gone through the process we sat down one day and looked at how our experience could have been better.

We both had careers before our family and we were also both ready to go back to work in some form but that would not impact on our families.

Whatever we did we wanted to fit it around the needs of our families as well as improve the process for other families and help other children find loving homes.

So in March 2015 we launched a pilot project aiming to help recruit and train prospective adoptive parents with Adopt Berks. We are a Berkshire-wide initiative designed to provide support for families seeking to adopt. Our scheme aims to reduce the time children spend in foster homes waiting for their permanent family and help provide adoptive parents with tools, strategies and support for parenting.”

Helen has operated at Board level in the public and private sector and has proven credentials as an entrepreneur having created and now licensed children’s brand Little Punk London.

Clare has over 20 years experience as a global management IT consultant and trainer with experience gained in both the private and public sector.

In the UK looked after children spend too long in care waiting to be adopted. There is now a well-established negative correlation between the length of time children wait and their eventual life chances.

We wanted to offer some support and guidance for parents adopting either preplacement or as a restorative parenting skill after placement. We believe our package of support can really make a difference to the quality of life of adoptive families while also creating efficiencies for adoption agencies.”

What are your plans for the future?

Claire says: “We just want to keep spreading the word of what support parents and families who adopt and foster can access as well as continue to help find loving homes for children in care.
