NEWS & VIEWS

Capturing memories on VE Day Purley-on-Thames photographer, Tina Cleary, documented her village’s VE Day celebrations – and helped to raise £1,767 for the Royal Berkshire Hospital as it battles Covid-19. Tina, who specialises in maternity photo shoots, captured dozens of families across the Berkshire village at a safe distance, from a couple ballroom dancing to children dressed in 1940s clothes enjoying afternoon tea. She covered 22 roads, walking a distance of 10km. Meanwhile, local DJ Simon Jackson decorated his car with flags and balloons, and played 1940s music through a PA system to the delighted locals on the sunny bank holiday. The village committee – in fancy dress – collected donations for the NHS. Tina says: “I was delighted to be asked to support this fundraiser, and capture forever memories through my photography.” As well as taking beautiful pregnancy images – from her home studio or on location – Tina also offers family portraits and business branding photography. She adds: “I’ve missed my lovely clients over the last few months, but the government guidance is that I can now return to what I love doing, whilst observing social distancing rules. Pregnancy photography is a lot of fun and gives ladies a real boost, documenting one of the key milestones in family life.” More information: www.tinaclearyphotography.co.uk

Staying strong in tough times Staying fit and healthy during lockdown is far more manageable thanks to ladies-only gym, BestLife Basics. The Bracknell classes are all currently live online and via Zoom. Members get to join the community of like-minded women prioritising their health and fitness. Nutrition is a key part of the offering, with coaching from a qualified nutritionist that encourages clients to work on tiny habits which will add up to some serious results. Owner, Marla Murray Callisen, says: “I don’t promote diets, or quick transformations. I coach all my clients to discover what works well for them and their families. It’s all about helping them make choices which will improve health, but also taste good.” Client, Rachel, adds: “The incredible Marla has been there for me and all the other ladies who usually attend her friendly gym. She constantly encourages me to be healthier … a better me! These times aren’t easy for any of us but I know I am getting fitter as a result of her commitment and hard work.” BestLife Basics is waiting on guidelines from the government about physically re-opening.

Outdoor learning from home with MERL The Museum of English Rural Life is missing its visitors during lockdown, especially its 'Friday Fledglings.' However, during the museum closure (and at least until the end of June), the weekly outdoor learning session for under-5s has moved online. Session leaders will bring stories, ideas and activities inspired by the MERL garden and its collections, so that families can continue to enjoy the benefits of outdoor learning at home. Activities are published in an Event on The MERL Facebook page www.facebook.com/MuseumofEnglishRuralLife at 11am every Friday and on the museum’s website, https://merl.reading.ac.uk/event/online-fridayfledglings where you can also find activities from previous sessions. If you’ve been to a session at the museum, you’ll see some familiar faces, including Little Mouse. If you’re new to Fledglings, the activities will provide a little taste of the popular session for under 5s. You can find more events and activities to try at home at https://merl.reading.ac.uk/whats-on

Nurturing a love of music Nurture a love of music right from the start! Singing with babies and young children is a natural part of human life that happens across the whole world in every culture. It doesn’t matter how well you think you sing – your voice is exactly what your child needs to hear. Children instinctively love the patterns and rhythms of songs and even young babies can recognise melodies once they’ve heard them several times. Singing with your little ones strengthens your bond with them – you are directly helping them to develop positive relationships when you are bouncing, tickling, swinging, cuddling and laughing together. Plus you are encouraging listening and sound making that lead to the development of their speech and communication. Music is powerful stuff! Singing, playing instruments and moving to music, all these fun activities develop a huge range of essential skills from early language, to fine and gross motor skills, to listening and memory, as well as nurturing curiosity and creativity. Music even has the potential to make your life easier because singing a song can be a pleasurable way to transition smoothly from one activity to the next at home e.g. bed time,

bath time, or getting dressed. As children get older they can enjoy discovering a range of fun actions songs, music games, and playing percussion instruments, all of which develop their musicianship in a relaxed and playful way; great for their general development and confidence, and also opening up the possibility of them learning a musical instrument in the future.

Danielle Ballantine-Drake is Head of Early Years and KS1 at Berkshire Maestros, who offer Mini Maestros music lessons for babies and toddlers. Berkshire Maestros are also currently offering online instrument lessons via Zoom for children over 5 and adults – they can even deliver instruments to your door. Click here to find out more.

The show must go on for Stagecoach Stagecoach has created a calendar of fun and exciting online classes. The three disciplines – singing, dancing and acting – will be delivered to existing and new students every Saturday from 6th June. All you need is access to a computer and a safe space. Book your place online. For students who prefer to learn at their own pace, the new online learning studio at stagecoachathome.com is home to over 100 videos, with new content being added each week until Stagecoach schools reopen. Clare Gosling, principal of Stagecoach Henley and Marlow, said: “We want our students to feel inspired, active and continue learning virtually. We’re adding to our repertoire all the time,

familiesonline.co.uk

such as our new bitesize sessions and exclusive-to-Stagecoach Masterclasses and extras from a few familiar faces. From our singing teacher Chékirah’s soulful vocal introduction to ‘Rise Up’, to discovering our dance teacher Rob’s contemporary lyrical jazz class, your children will be sure to ramp up their performing arts skills in these energising explorations.” For more information and to book live classes by zoom: www.stagecoach.co.uk/highwycombe www.stagecoach.co.uk/henleyandmarlow www.stagecoach.co.uk/readingcaversham

WORK

Is now the time for a radical change of direction? For some people, the thought of returning to work will be welcomed. But for those who have enjoyed being at home with family, having flexible working hours, discovering new pleasures and rediscovering past skills, you may be looking for a fresh challenge.

M

any women with school-aged children make the decision to forge a new and more fulfilling path. Besides, it’s not always easy to pick up where you left off. In the corporate world and given the recent pandemic, not everyone will be able to return to their previous job. So self-employment may come from necessity or choice. Here are some things to consider, when making that potentially life-changing decision whether to reinvent yourself or stay with the familiar: 1. What existing skills do you have that may benefit others? What new skills would you like to acquire? Are there unfulfilled needs in the marketplace, or products / services you think you could do better? 2. What support network do you have to help you develop your business skills?

3. What is the cost of self-employment – what income and benefits are you losing and what might be the cost of upskilling to the necessary standard? 4. What are the gains: freedom, control, time, emotional, financial? Not all are measurable in £ so try looking at the pain they relieve (stress, guilt etc) 5. How long will it take to get your product / service to market? 6. What is your key driver for change, what are your goals? Why do you want to change? Apart from the practical WHAT? and HOW? more important to consider is the WHY? If you have a strong sense of purpose, you are more likely to succeed. Joining an established network offers you a community, where you can source the skills you lack and find

opportunities to collaborate. A good network will ensure you have support from people who have had similar challenges and experiences. To find out more about The Athena Network in West Berks – or to come to one of our groups in the Thames Valley contact Debbie.Miles@TheAthenaNetwork.com

WORK

Getting Back to Work By Mandy Garner In the past the phenomenon of returning to work - whether from maternity leave or longer periods of leave - was mainly associated with women. However, given the Covid-19 lockdown and extensive use of the furlough scheme over the last few months, the number of individuals facing transition back to work after a long period of leave is now much more widespread. This could be good news for traditional returners in that there may be a greater general sense of understanding of the issues involved. While furloughed workers will not face the daunting return to work after a long gap, they may need a period of adjustment to the new normal, whatever that might be.

The Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development suggests a re-induction period for furloughed workers. For longer-term returners, the issues of returning to the workforce are compounded by having to find a new job. As we face the prospect of more redundancies and a bleaker economic picture, that is likely to be harder. So what do you do if you have taken or been forced to take time out of the work place and you want to get back to work? We asked the team at Working Mums for their ideas and tips and to tell us about the FREE RESOURCE they offer mums returning to work. READ MORE.

ENTERTAINMENT

Hello!

CALLING ALL

Download the family app that invests in your kids

TECH SAVVY PARENTS

We’d like to tell you about Beanstalk, the brand new family app brought to you by the people behind KidStart. The only app of it’s kind, Beanstalk helps families come together to build a meaningful nest egg for their children’s future. They are on the look for tech savvy parents to give the app a whirl and change the way they save for their kids. From talking to parents, Beanstalk’s founders could see that the savings market for kids was broken. Almost every new parent wants to put something aside for their children to help launch them into adult life, but very few do, often because the existing products are confusing or poor value.

It’s simple – you can add all your children and yourself on to one app.

Even when parents do something, they often just keep it in cash. This may not be the right choice for longer term saving as the value can be eroded by inflation.

You don’t need to put any money into open an account and start saving:

That’s why Beanstalk was born – the revolutionary new way for families to make a real difference for their children and themselves.

Why choose Beanstalk?

All the family can help – grandparents, friends and the wider family can all contribute easily to your kids’ pots.

1. Use KidStart to earn free savings 2. Round up your purchases to save little and often 3. Top up or set up regular contributions if you would like. It’s designed for growth - at 0.5% the fee is one of the lowest, meaning more saved for your kids.

Click here to download the family app that invests in your kids. Follow the Beanstalk journey: @thebeanstalkapp on IG, FB and Twitter.

Please note: capital as risk. As with any investment, the value can go down as well as up. 9

PARENTING

Dealing with Fighting Children By Tanith Carey Sibling rivalry and rows can be one of the most energy-sapping, nervejangling aspects of parenting. Now, still in partial lockdown, I’m pretty sure you desperately need a rest from constant cries of: “Mum, he hit me!” or “She’s taken my toy!” Stressful as it can be, it helps to remember that ALL siblings fight sometimes - it can even be a positive part of your children’s development which offers a safe training ground to learn how to deal with conflict. Sibling conflict is a natural part of family life which can never be avoided completely because it stems back to each child’s primitive need to survive by not missing out on their parents’ care and protection. Squabbles and explosions flare up because children are still developing control over the part of the brain that helps them manage their impulses.

what kids are REALLY fighting over and taking into account their development really helps. If you introduce evidence-based parenting strategies, which are based on science, not opinion, I guarantee your kids will get on better – even if not ALL of the time. HERE ARE MY 12 DETAILED TIPS. You can read more in my books:

In the teen years, rows can escalate further when siblings start to directly compare achievements and to define themselves in opposition to each other. But looking at it from the point of view of children, understanding familiesonline.co.uk

Summer camp survival guide By Claire Winter The summer holidays are looming and, like many other parents in the many children in the Thames Valley, you may be booking your child into a day or residential camp so they can have fun and be with other children. Whether they are going for the day, the week or attending a day or residential camp, the key is to be prepared! Most summer activity days involve different sports and activities so your children need to wear suitable clothes. Opt for casual, comfortable clothes that you don’t mind them getting messy during an art and craft session or wet or dirty in bad weather. Sportswear is ideal and adaptable to various outdoor activities. Layering is also good to accommodate the unpredictability of the weather! Make sure you label everything! The last thing you want is for your child to lose their favourite hoodie. Encourage your child to leave their phone at home, if they have one, but if it’s absolutely necessary that they take it, make

familiesonline.co.uk

sure it’s in a protective, waterproof case. They should leave all other electronics at home as activity providers will not take responsibility for missing or broken items. Remind your child to stay hydrated during the day. The camp organisers will ensure there is plenty of drinking water available but send your child with a refillable water bottle. Ensure your child leaves the house with sun cream already applied and ask them to re-apply it every four hours. Camps for younger children are likely to remind children about this. If they are going to be outside all day, send your child with a hat to make sure they don’t get sunstroke. Most kids don’t mind wearing a baseball cap. Weather is often unpredictable, so as long as you pack for both cold, warm and wet, you can’t go wrong. Your kids will make great friends at their summer camp or activity day. There are an amazing variety of things for them to learn and do.
