Help raise awareness with Wear a Hat Day Did you know that brain tumours kill more people under 40 than any other type of cancer, yet the research receives less than 1% of national cancer research funding? Brain Tumour Research are working to change that by raising awareness of their Wear a Hat Day on Thursday 28 March 2013. Children and adults are encouraged to make a donation and wear a hat to school, work, social events or even just at home. From sponsored silences to bake sales, schools and colleges around the country are being encouraged to raise money any way they can. So start planning now and register your interest with sarah@braintumourresearch.org What will your school do?

Imagination Street comes to Astwood Bank Just across the Worcestershire border in Astwood Bank (only 5 miles from Alcester), a huge new soft play centre is about to open its doors. This is really good news, as there is very little in the way of soft play around Alcester, since Bungo’s Barn closed down in Bidford last year. Kevin Grubb and Matt Jinks have been running Imagination Street in Bromsgrove for three years, and will be opening their second centre on November 24th. It will boast secret but “groundbreaking” new features that are available nowhere else in the UK, plus a separate toddler area, roleplaying zones, huge interactive play frame, F1 track, football pitch, a library and party options. For parents, there will be free Wi-Fi and newspapers, and it will employ up to 30 staff, mainly young locals.

Go green with a willow play feature If you’ve ever wanted to build your own willow garden feature, now is the time. Between November and March the plants are dormant, and a local familyrun company will cut and deliver them to you, with full instructions on building your own dome, wigwam, tunnel, arbour or fedge (a living fence). Green Man Willows is husband-and-wife team Andy and Becca Satchwell, located in the countryside of Spernall, near Studley. “We can install the structures for people if they aren’t brave enough to have a go themselves,” says Becca, “but it is really easy if you follow the simple instructions. It makes a lovely play feature in the garden, and absorbs carbon from the atmosphere as it grows. We also sell bundles of thin rods for craft projects.” Prices start from £90 for a dome (plus delivery). For more information, see www.greenmanwillows.net/

New flexible way to get back in shape A Stratford mum has launched a service offering new mothers a more flexible option than going to the gym. Clare Teasdale has been teaching pilates for 12 years, and now has two children, aged 3 and 1. After the birth of her second child, Clare got back in shape (see the photos above) using her pilates, and decided to offer video classes that new mums could download from the internet and
use at home, in whatever time they have. Under the strapline “No subscription, no celebrities, just pilates,” Real Pilates UK was born. The videos are easy to follow, and cost just £6.99 per class or £19.99 for all four – and Families readers can claim a discount of 20% by typing in the code LAUNCHDISCOUNT at the check out. Did you know that a sneeze can send germs as far as 5 meters? An estimated 22 million school days are missed every year due to colds, so here are some top tips for keeping colds at bay this winter: Wash your hands. Most cold and flu viruses are spread by direct contact, and washing hands reduces this spread. Teach children to do the same. Avoid touching your face, especially if you are around someone with a cold or have been touching surfaces in a public area.

Don’t sneeze or cough into your hands. Germs and viruses cling to skin, so this often results in passing on your germs. Use a tissue, then throw it away, or cough or sneeze into the inside of your elbow.

Soft play can now come to you! Two mums from Harbury have set up their own business supplying soft play equipment for parties, which keeps the under4s entertained and safe. With a ballpit, climb-on shapes, rockers, sit-on animals, tunnels, softplay bricks and foam blocks, mats and a variety of other toys and dressup costumes, there’s something for everyone. “We also offer a more complete solution to help any busy parent, including party food, bags and entertainment,” says Reena Hawkins. For more information, call Reena on 07966 767 213 or see www.softplaytakeaway.co.uk
Fish oils have been proven to help with brain development, so the company behind Vegepa, the Omega 3 supplements, has joined up with a children’s literacy charity, Volunteer Reading Help (VRH) to give a boost to their programme. Igennus Healthcare Nutrition will be donating 50p from every pack of their Vegepa E-EPA 70 Orange Chewables (which is suitable for ages 3+), so that VRH can help another 3,500 children across the UK with reading in schools.
New range to help with morning sickness The travel sickness brand Seaband have brought out a new range of natural treatments to help with morning sickness. And with more than half of expectant mums trying to keep their pregnancy secret at some stage, sickness can be one symptom that can be difficult to hide. The new Seaband Mama! Range includes acupressure wristbands, ginger lozenges that include folic acid to help with baby’s development, and an aromatherapy rollette, which can stave off sickness when applied to pulse points.

Born too soon Expecting a baby can be a very exciting time, however if your precious bundle puts in an appearance earlier than planned, the emotional rollercoaster ride can be extremely stressful for the whole family. By Julie Thomas birth-weight babies, taking into consideration any leads, drips or monitors. The garments are designed and manufactured in Britain and focus on comfort, fit and practicality. Special attention has been paid to soft, flat seams and soft care labels to ensure that the skin is protected. The clothes are available to fit babies as small as 1lb and up to six months.
A
baby is classed as premature if it arrives before 37 weeks gestation. In the UK, one in every eight babies is born too soon, either as a result of labour starting early or the delivery being induced. The cause of many premature births is often unknown, but contributing factors can include infection, smoking or use of recreational drugs during pregnancy, being underweight or being under 18 years of age or over 35 years of age. A birth may be induced early if there is a health risk to baby or mum, such as pre-eclampsia. Survival statistics improve the further progressed the pregnancy is, but from 24 weeks gestation, the baby is considered viable. The smaller the baby, the more care it will need immediately after birth. There are 228 neonatal units in the UK offering three levels of care for preemies:
Special Care (Level 1) For babies who require continuous monitoring of respiration or heart rate; for babies receiving added oxygen, being tube fed, receiving phototherapy or recovering from more specialist care. • Special Care nurse to baby ratio – 1:4
High Dependency Care (Level 2) For babies receiving oxygen from nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) but not fulfilling any of the categories for intensive care; any baby below 1,000gms who does not fulfil any of the categories for intensive care; babies receiving parental nutrition, with apnoea requiring stimulation. • High Dependency Care nurse to baby ratio – 1:2
Intensive Care (Level 3) For babies needing respiratory support (ventilation); for babies weighing less than 1,000g and/or born at less than 28 weeks’

gestation and receiving nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP); for babies with severe respiratory disease or who require major surgery. • Intensive Care nurse to baby ratio – 1:1
Founder of Teddy & Me, Sharon Ward said: “Every six minutes in the UK a baby is born needing neonatal special care. Imagine that baby is so small you could hold it in the palm of your hand. Keeping these babies warm is key to their survival so we set about working with neonatal professionals to design a range of clothes that meet this vital need. The first collection was so successful that we had to expand our range quickly and now supply a number of baby boutiques and several John Lewis stores around the country. We also sell direct via our website with a next day delivery service, so we can respond to an early arrival instantly. ” “The number of premature births in the UK is on the increase, largely affected by IVF treatment, which can result in multiple births. Typically twins are delivered around 37 weeks and triplets at 33 weeks and the birth weights tend to be lower. Teddy & Me clothing has proved to be the perfect solution to a real need.”
Having a baby in neonatal care can be distressing and frightening for parents. Seeing your baby connected to lots of tubes and wires and not being able to hold them close, coupled with the worry of whether they will survive, can be exhausting, both mentally and physically, but it is important for the hospital to monitor body temperature, organ function and oxygen levels and ensure baby is nourished to maximise survival chances. One of the most important issues when caring for a premature baby is maintaining an appropriate body temperature and most baby clothes, even newborn size, will be too big. As the skin is so fragile, handling of baby must be kept to a minimum and clothing that is too large is simply going to irritate and cause difficulties in the incubator. Thankfully, a Kenilworth-based company has come to the rescue by developing an amazing range of baby clothing designed to fit premature, poorly and low-
“The development of Teddy & Me has been a true labour of love. As parents of a premature baby, my husband and I know how emotionally draining and frightening the experience is,” explained Sharon. “Our son Daniel arrived unexpectedly at 34 weeks, after I developed pre-eclampsia and the lesser known complication, HELLP syndrome.” For more information about Teddy & Me and to find local stockists, call 01926 856069 or visit www.teddyandme.co.uk The company also provides help and advice via its Facebook page, which provides an opportunity for parents to network and support each other. f you live in one of South Warwickshire’s main towns, you probably know Peach pubs, but may not realise they’re a chain, as each pub is very individual. In fact, Peach own and run The One Elm in Stratford, The Rose and Crown in Warwick, The Almanack in Kenilworth and the recently acquired and re-opened Star & Garter in Leamington. The focus is on creating a relaxed, homely atmosphere with great food, which is perfect for family dining, and they have a quirky sense of style – and humour, too. I took my son Luca to the One Elm, and we had a good laugh at the fact that the child’s half portion was exactly that – an adult-sized burger cut in half (see pic)! The food was delicious and the service attentive and friendly. My sister also went to the Rose and Crown and reported back that the food was “amazing” – not surprising, when the Head Chef, Rob Hartwell, was named the Craft Guild of Chefs Pub Restaurant Chef of the Year 2012.

S
ing and Sign is the original baby signing class, starting in Brighton 11 years ago. Since then it has spread across the UK, powered by the almost evangelical attitude of parents who have benefited from it. Baby signing is now incorporated into many baby development classes, but Sing and Sign stays true to its roots, focusing on the huge range of signs that babies can begin to learn from the age of 6 months. Parents can also make use of a wealth of back-up material, from books, CDs and DVDs to an online video library of more than 200 signs in action. I went along to St Mary Immaculate Parish Hall, Warwick, on a sunny Friday morning to meet some of the children and their parents.
Pippa Jenkins runs Sing and Sign in StratforduponAvon and Warwick, and is in full swing with the babies when I arrive. The hour-long class is packed with songs, signs and hand puppets, and the babies are happy and attentive. “I’m really really enjoying it. She’s really responsive,” says Charlotte of Ruby (10 months) during the tea break later. “The first week I bought the CD, DVD and books so that her grandparents and dad could get involved, and then she noticed a bird and signed “bird”, which I thought was really impressive! I want to prevent the Terrible Twos.” “I agree,” says Jenny, mum to Eoin, aged 8 months. “I’ve started using the signs at home and he seems to be getting the hang of it. He gets frustrated now when he’s waiting, so hopefully it’ll help.” By the time babies complete Stage 1 (6-14mths) parents will have learned up to 100 signs for all aspects of baby’s world (bedtimes, mealtimes, emotions, playtime etc), and this additional communication really does help the parentchild bond. In the Stage 2 class I meet Dave and Pamela, a couple who are very enthusiastic about how Sing and Sign has helped Evie, aged 19 months. “Her speech is fantastic for her age, and I feel that’s down to Sing and Sign,” says Dave. “She knows all the colours, all the animals. It’s a part of our week we look forward to.” Pippa says this is typical: “Sing and Sign has been developed with the help of Speech and Language professionals. By remembering to always say the word when you sign you will boost language development whilst helping to understand your baby’s needs, thoughts and ideas. As speech improves, signs fade away.” Stage 2 is more active, with the toddlers meeting Jessie Cat, playing instruments and being swung around in a very fun version of the Hokey Cokey. After the class, Louise – mum to
twin boys Jack and Finlay (23 months) and a Sing and Sign veteran, with both stages under her belt – rounds off my interviews. “We absolutely love it,” she says. “It’s really helped with their speech and frustration. This morning Jack went to bite me and I signed ‘We don’t bite, no,’ and he signed ‘sorry’. And as soon as I make the ‘home’ sign, they start saying goodbye.” When and where? Warwick (Monday and Friday), Leamington (Monday), Stratford (Thursday). Classes run in term-time only, and are booked in 10-week blocks. The next term starts the week commencing 7th January 2013 and bookings are being taken now. Cost: £6 per session, including refreshments. How to party your way through the recession As the recession drags on, more and more of us are looking for ways to earn extra income. But if your children are still either at home or primary school, traditional ways of working can mean the extra cash just disappears into childcare. That’s why a growing number of mums and dads are turning to direct selling, a flexible form of self-employment that fits around your family commitments. We spoke to a few of the many companies doing this in Warwickshire, to see why a rising number of parents are partying through the hard times. Direct selling, party plan – whatever you call it, the old idea behind Tupperware and Anne Summers has had a makeover lately. Nowadays, you can have a party at your own home where friends can try on vintageinspired Stella & Dot jewellery, coo over Jamie Oliver’s latest cookware range or pick funky, ethical fashion for kids and mums from the rising Swedish brand Me&I. Even local, independent retailers are getting in on the act, with Leamington shop Ella’s Toys launching their own party plan business. There are benefits on both sides. If you’re hosting a party, you’ll get a hostess gift plus a percentage off any purchases. For the seller, the ambience of a party – a few drinks, relaxed atmosphere, slight sense of obligation to one’s host – takes away the need for hard selling (“It’s wine and shiny things!” laughs Stella & Dot stylist Kate Leach, “what could go wrong?”). Often an attendee will decide they’d like their own party, too, and so it goes on. And it certainly does go on. Direct selling is now the largest provider of part-time independent earning in the UK, contributing a whopping £2billion annually to the UK economy*. “I’ve noticed a really big increase this season,” says Pernilla Kemp, Head of UK Sales for Me&I, which has recently moved into Warwickshire. There is obviously money to be made, and often the highest earners not only host parties, but recruit and train teams of sellers (called sponsoring), earning commission on their team’s sales. This is what drew Kate, a British Airways cabin crew member and mum-of-1 from Stratford, to Stella & Dot. “I asked a colleague how she managed financially with 3 kids, when she flew so little, and she said she sells jewellery. She also sponsors lots of people – it’s very lucrative for her.” However, as with any business, in order to make a lot of money you have to devote time and energy to it. Louise Reddington-Blyth, who set up the party plan side of Ella’s Toys, warns against thinking the sponsorship route is easy money. “You can’t get rich quick,” she says. “It can take 12 to 18 months to build up a team, and initially it’s hard work. But the parties can earn you a decent income from the start.” Zoe Jones, a local Jamie at Home representative (pictured here with Jamie), agrees that just a bit of extra money coming in can make all the difference. “Pay for
10
something for the family with your earnings, for example, pay for Xmas or pay off your credit card, and it then becomes very worthwhile.” One of the reasons direct selling is so popular is its flexibility – you can book parties wherever and whenever you like. “You can do them in the day, in the evening, playgroups, events…” says Louise. “I do everything”. You’ll be self-employed, so you set your own hours, work mainly from home and fit everything around your family life. You can even fit it around an existing job, which is probably why there’s been a recent upturn in the number of men getting involved. But don’t get carried away, says Zoe. “It is important to make sure any family time and special days, such as birthdays and school events, are firmly blocked out in your diary before you book any parties, and just offer days and evenings YOU want to work.” You’ll have to declare any money you earn to the taxman, too, as you’ll be self-employed. HMRC are currently running a Direct Selling Campaign aimed at anyone who may have got behind on declaring their income, and you should contact them as soon as you start trading at www.hmrc.gov.uk/

Start-up costs are usually very low (limited to £200 in law – Ella’s Toys start-up kit is just £99), and if you’re passionate about something, this might be the chance to put your enthusiasm to good use. You don’t need any qualifications, all training is included, but you must be sociable and a good communicator. “You need to be able to chat to people from all backgrounds,” says Kate, “which is what I do all day in my job, so it’s perfect for me.” So, despite the gloomy economic forecast, it might still be possible to buck the financial trend by investing in your very own business. “There’s plenty of scope,” says Pernilla, “There are lots of opportunities still in Warwickshire.” *From the Direct Selling Association http://dsa.org.uk/

Make and take along your toys with Carddies
C
arddies are a great new idea for children who enjoy colouring in and making up stories. It was launched this year by two sisters who designed a set of card people “who live in a box”. Each kit comes with cardboard cut-out characters and background, pencils to colour them in and little stands to put them into. And it all packs away neatly into the size of a large matchbox, so your child can carry them wherever he or she goes. My son Luca tested out the new Nativity pack, and really loved the concept. There are lots of different options, including Ballet, Knights, Fairies, Football, two Family options and now Nativity and Farm. For more information, see www.carddies.com Tel: 01789 764667

His parents try to take steps to keep him firmly on the ground but, at the end of their tether, they decide to release Barnaby. At first he is horrified – but when he floats towards a rather special hot air balloon a new, magical life begins for Barnaby. ‘This imaginative tale is beautifully written and the colourful characters are very entertaining. Designed to replace a tricycle and bicycles with stabilisers, the Strider is a great gift for any child. Besides providing great fun and exercise, the Strider helps to develop steering, balance and co-ordination, and we have one to be won, courtesy of Learning Early.
