Introducing our front cover star Tyler By Andy Cove, Tyler’s dad

To his family, his friends and anyone lucky enough to have Tyler in their lives, they see him as a typical, cheeky little boy with a smile that could melt even the hardest of hearts. That Tyler has Down Syndrome has almost become an afterthought and while it is always front and centre of our lives in many ways, those aspects are largely functional and logistical rather than any emotional baggage that we attach to our amazing little boy. Down Syndrome, an extra copy of the 21st chromosome, has been in the media recently with non-invasive testing threatening to reduce or even in a worst case scenario, wipe out Down Syndrome from the modern world. As Tyler’s parents, while we acknowledge the complexity of the argument, we prefer to tell Tyler’s story with all the ups and downs of a life with Down Syndrome rather than get weighed down in the politics of the argument. As such, we decided on Tyler’s 1st birthday to create a Twitter account @JustTylerCove to do just that. What started off simply as a way to post some fun pictures, or provide updates on Tyler’s health and personal development (mostly for our own benefit and the sense of marking milestones and moments) has developed into something far beyond our original expectations. In February 2016, we tweeted a picture of Tyler in his new football shirt and asked some of the players to retweet it to their larger number of followers. Shortly after, a player responded with at first a retweet (which in itself was enough!) and then later that day, a message saying he would like to send Tyler a signed shirt. The story and the relationship between Tyler and the footballer developed over the following few months culminating with Tyler - at the request of the player himself - becoming one of the youngest mascots ever to lead the team out on a glorious August day in front of 17,500 supporters all chanting his name. We saw the player again, at a slightly more low key engagement, and during cuddles and a few games, the player remarked (not for the first time) “It’s that smile. It gets me every time.” We agree. It most certainly does. @JustTylerCove

Issue 33 | January/February 2017 | Families Warwickshire

Pupdate Not long after we start the New Year, Eddie will be turning 7 months old, which is when the puppy equivalent of the terrible twos can kick in! As with our toddlers, consistency, patience, positive correction (praise), love and the indispensable glass of wine will hopefully see us through this stage! As I look back over the past few months, since Eddie joined our family, I can honestly say that he has made a hugely positive impact on our lives and we couldn’t imagine not having him here. Yes, it has been hard at times and my patience is tested on a regular basis but he is a very friendly and sociable puppy and is continually heading in the right direction with regards to his behaviour and training – let’s hope the terrible twos pass us by with minimal fuss!

NSPCC’s Schools Service needs Warwickshire volunteers A groundbreaking NSPCC school programme, which aims to protect a generation of children against abuse, is asking for people from across Warwickshire to help them in their mission. The Speak Out. Stay Safe project teaches children aged 4 to 11 how to recognise and understand abuse while giving them the confidence to speak out and seek help. Thanks to the hard work of dedicated volunteers, Speak Out. Stay Safe’s vital messaging has managed to reach over 6,000 pupils in more than 70 schools across Warwickshire - but more help is needed. Anna Eeles, the county’s NSPCC Schools Coordinator explains: “Our fantastic volunteers deliver assemblies to both key stage one and two children. Year 5 and 6 classes can also request a workshop visit. Our aim is to reach every primary school child twice in their primary school life and to do so; we need to expand our volunteer base. The NSPCC provide expert training and advice and volunteers in schools always work in pairs. Supporting our volunteers is key to our work – without them we cannot hope to protect and empower children within our communities.” If you have the confidence to speak in front of a group of primary school children and can commit to two monthly visits during term time, you can find out more by contacting Anna Eeles on 0121 585 3943/07834 498366 or aeeles@nspcc.org.uk.

New IVF Clinic and Services arrive in Stratford-upon-Avon The Stratford Clinic has partnered with Oxford Fertility, part of one of the largest providers of fertility care in the UK, to open Warwickshire Fertility. It brings world-leading fertility treatments previously unavailable across the West Midlands, giving couples local access to world-leading IVF techniques for the first time. Alongside access to new treatments, seeing a team of experts close to home will remove an element of stress to the IVF process. Until now couples across Warwickshire experiencing problems conceiving have had to travel outside the county to receive IVF treatment. Warwickshire Fertility opening means people can now make the vast majority of appointments in Stratford, including multiple

blood tests, injections and ultrasound scans before egg collection. Only egg collection and embryo transfer procedures will be conducted in Oxford, reducing disruption to a patient’s life. By choosing Warwickshire Fertility at The Stratford Clinic, patients are also supporting the sustainability of local NHS services. The clinic is a social enterprise, wholly owned by South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust, and all profits are reinvested back into the NHS. Warwickshire Fertility is part of The Fertility Partnership, one of the largest providers of fertility treatment in the UK. www.thefertilitypartnership.com www.thestratfordclinic.co.uk

New Year

New Year’s Resolutions By Tina Smith There is something truly powerful about making a commitment out loud. We are making ourselves vulnerable, putting ourselves ‘out there’ for the world to see. As Dr. Brené Brown (researcher of vulnerability, courage, worthiness, and shame) says, “Vulnerability is the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, courage, empathy, and creativity. It is the source of hope, empathy, accountability, and authenticity.” So why, if it is so wonderful, do so many New Year’s resolutions get broken?

How to beat the January blues Once the excitement of Christmas is over and gone, it can often feel like a real struggle for the whole family to keep things fresh and lively at the beginning of a new year. However, there are so many opportunities for you to do things together as a family - both indoors and out - that you'll soon banish the January blues! Here are a few ideas to keep in mind.

tug of war? Or tried snowball dodgeball? Once that snowman is built, try frisbeeing a hat onto his head or play a game of pin the nose on the snowman using a carrot. And everyone can join in a simple game of tag, made a little more interesting if you're only allowed to use the footprints of the other players!

A family read-in

The best way to blow away the cobwebs during January is to take the family for a long winter walk. It's great exercise, but it's even more fun if you make your walk an excuse to collect items for some winter crafting.

When it's blowing a gale outside, there's no better way to spend an afternoon than snuggled up with a good book. For younger children you can encourage them to act out the story and show off your full range of funny faces and voices. For older children, take the opportunity to discuss what they're reading in some depth - talk about plot and characters and why they enjoy a particular type of book. Who knows, you may even inspire them to try writing their own story!

Family Bake-Off

Who doesn't love the Great British Bake Off? Those grey January days offer the perfect opportunity to get into the kitchen and bake up a storm. Let younger children indulge in some messy play with their own bowl of cake mix or a piece of pastry don't get stressed about the mess but enjoy a real opportunity to spend some creative time together in the kitchen. For older children, encourage some healthy competition by going 'full Bake off' and seeing who can produce the best cookies or cupcakes.

Get creative in the garden

Outdoor crafts are a wonderful way to liven up the garden for pennies, using materials you can find outdoors or simply lying around the house. It's amazing how ice, berries and watercolours or food colourings can transform tap water into beautiful ice baubles to decorate the garden when set in interesting moulds. Or spread peanut butter all over the outside of an empty toilet roll holder or that piece of over crunchy toast, then roll in birdseed to create an instant feeder that the children can hang near the kitchen or living room window. Add a bird book and they can pass a few hours identifying and logging the birds that come to visit. Just make sure they wrap up warm!

Fun in the snow

Of course, snow in January isn't guaranteed but if it does snow you have the ideal excuse to wrap up warm and organise snowman building contests and a monster snowball fight. Children of all ages love playing in the snow, but have you ever played

Create rock pets

Find a talking stick

Another interesting find on your walk might be a stick that transforms, with the help of some beads, feather, paint and markers into a wish stick for younger children or a talking stick for the older members of your tribe. Talking sticks have a long history in tribal cultures as a way of allowing everyone to have their say - you can only talk when holding the stick - so, for larger families, this could be an ideal way for your children to create something that will ensure they're heard.

All too often, we think of New Year’s resolutions in the negative sense of ‘when will they be broken’ rather than when will they be accomplished. This is disappointing as the aspirations leading up to a new year, a new beginning, how we would like to change our life for the better give us great insight into what our ideal self would look like. There is so much to be gained by making statements about how we want to improve our lives. The problem is the gap in the middle, the space between where we are now and where we want to be. It helps if you share your goals. If you tell a trusted friend, family member or coach who truly understands the reason behind the resolution, this can immediately increase your chance of success. Choose wisely who you ask for support in your quest to change behaviour as it is their role to keep you accountable and to remind you of why you chose to change – especially in those moments when you are truly tempted to give up. Choose poorly and they may just be the one to hand you the chocolate! It is wonderful to have big aspirational goals, but the key is to break it down and be specific. Read more about this in Tina’s latest blog at www.yournewwings.com Tina Smith is a local mum, Life Coach and founder of Your New Wings

Look to the heavens

On a clear night, there's nothing better than wrapping up warm and heading outside to stargaze. Download an app and see how many constellations you can find and identify. Younger children will enjoy spotting stars and older ones can test their astronomical knowledge.

Have a tech-free day

Be brave and ban iPads, smartphones and games consoles for the day. Instead put out a pile of blank paper, pens and craft materials and see what your children can create. Boredom can be the best motivator for creativity.

Revive the art of den building

For younger children, provide blankets, boxes and furniture indoors while encourage older children to get outdoors and get den building in the garden or the woods. Find out who the Bear Grylls of the family is and who can create the best fantasy castle/spaceship/dragon's belly. Den building is for everyone, so get involved! New Year, new start: how to divorce with dignity Sadly, statistics prove that many struggling couples stay together over the Christmas period for the sake of their families. Whilst this is a selfless sacrifice, what it means is that January is often a busy month for divorce lawyers who see an influx of enquiries from people who want take the opportunity of a New Year to make major changes in their life.

Use your support network

So, how best can a divorce be managed with dignity and respect? Here are some practical tips to help couples keep matters as amicable as possible.

If your ex is being completely unreasonable, resist the temptation to stoop to their level. It won’t make you feel any better and it won’t help in the long run.

Accept that the other person may not be mentally or emotionally in the same place as you

Separating couples go through different stages, including shock, denial, anger, hurt, bargaining and acceptance. If you have been planning to leave your spouse for some time but they have no idea, it will probably come as quite a shock to them when they do find out. Whilst you have had time to come to terms with living without them, they have not. Try remembering that they may be at a different stage in the process to you and be patient.

Don’t be afraid to ask for support from friends, family, your doctor, religious organisation or a life coach if you are struggling. Mutual friends will not enjoy being asked to take sides, but true friends will be happy to help.

Rise above it

If you can come to an amicable agreement about divorce you will keep costs under control. A divorce is emotionally draining so you don’t want to make it any harder for yourself than it already is. By Alison Ratchford, a divorce and family lawyer with specialist family law firm Woolley & Co, Solicitors. If you’d like to arrange an amicable divorce call Alison on 01789 336405 or visit www.family-lawfirm.co.uk

Avoid seeking revenge

This can be difficult, especially if you feel that you are the “wronged party”. Focusing on the past isn’t going to help when it comes to sorting out the future arrangements for your children or finances. If the emotional temperature has already been raised in “tit for tat” exchanges, it will be much more difficult to resolve big issues easily.

Never use your children as pawns

Don’t use children as a bargaining tool. You will both continue to co-parent your children for the rest of their lives. You could seriously risk alienating your children when they are old enough to realise what was going on. The break-up of their family unit is tough enough on children, so you must put your own feelings and emotions aside and provide as much love and stability for them as you possibly can, despite what’s going on.

Keep communicating

Keep talking to your spouse and keep communication civil. This will help in deciding practicalities where the children are concerned. Cutting communications can just make things more difficult and expensive.

Education

A fearless start to the year Why fearless you might ask? And what does this even mean? For Explore Learning, a child’s educational journey goes beyond acing a quick spelling test or getting to the top of the class for a term. It is about building longlasting confidence that takes them through their entire life, whether it is through developing a ‘have a go attitude’, or knowing it’s ok to put their hand up without fear of a ‘silly’ question being mocked, or simply feeling excited about their next step. It’s about nurturing a sense of pride, and a fearless attitude to learning, so that every child can become their version of amazing. Explore’s incredible tutors are there to support every step of the way. Rather than a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’, they will ask “are you sure?” or “can you convince me of your answer?” allowing children to explore and push the boundaries of their thinking each day. To celebrate the New Year and all of the potential it brings, Explore Learning would like to offer you a little something to help your child along their fearless learner journey. From 16 January until 28 February, you’ll save £50 when you join any one of Explore’s maths and English tuition centres. To find out which one is closest to you and to book your free trial, check out the website: www.explorelearning.co.uk/offer

How to make maths fun for kids Maths is one of the fundamental skills that all children need to acquire, and there are plenty of ways you can make maths fun through the use of games and maths activities at home.

Numeracy targets are fundamental to the National Curriculum and to primary school testing and that can seem as intimidating to you as to your child. However, there are some simple strategies you can put in place that can make maths fun for your children and reinforce how important those life skills are. The way maths is taught in schools has changed fundamentally over the past few years so you may end up learning something new, too!

Do your homework

Before you can support your child's maths learning at home, you'll need to find out about the way they learn maths at school. Do some homework on modern maths methods like number lines and gridding, and find out whether your child's school offers maths support classes for parents. If not, there are some excellent resources available online like the family maths toolkit from national numeracy or the 'Maths for Mums and Dads' books by Mike Askew and Rob Eastaway.

Maths by stealth

There are plenty of ways you can incorporate maths into everyday life, which is an excellent way of letting children know how important numeracy skills are outside of the classroom. Next time you have a cake or a pizza, ask them to divide it into quarters or thirds or an even number of portions for the number of people eating it. Baking isn't just a pleasurable activity to do with your children, it's one of the very best ways of embedding the importance of weights and measures. They'll also need to keep an eye on the clock to

8

know when their goodies are ready to come out of the oven. Meanwhile, every time you go to the shops, encourage them to add as they go and then make their best estimate of the final bill. From calculating the change they should receive when they buy an ice cream to keeping score in a friendly game of football, everyday maths really is everywhere!

Make tech and tables count

There are numerous maths apps available for children of all ages, from simple counting games to more advanced calculations. Doodle Maths and Mr Thorne's Maths Universe should get even committed young mathphobes practising their numeracy on their tablets and smartphones. Sing Your Times Tables with Percy Parker and Squeebles Times Tables are both excellent apps for embedding times tables in young brains. Why not try singing along with Percy Parker on your next long car journey? For older children facing their end of primary school tests, ensure that they know not just the multipliers but the divisors too, up to 12 x 12.

Try gamification

In other words, get out some old fashioned board games. Children learn best when an activity is fun, and they're usually unaware that they're learning through playing games. Dominoes is an excellent game for practising basic maths concepts, as is Snakes and Ladders. They'll be having too much fun to notice they're adding and subtracting and recognising basic number patterns. For older children, Monopoly introduces more sophisticated numeracy skills and Scrabble is a brilliant way to practise both numeracy and literacy. Board games are also valuable for introducing related concepts like strategy, logic and reasoning skills into the mix.

Make it more formal

As your children's maths skills progress, you can begin to make their home learning more formalised. There are any number of online maths resources available and your school may encourage at-home use of a programme like Mathletics to challenge and reinforce skills learned in the classroom. These online resources usually feature progressive levels so you can easily track your child's progress but do check, before you sign up to a paid programme, that it's compatible with the National Curriculum. Although it's easy to assume that children will prefer working on the computer, many also enjoy age-appropriate workbooks, with stickers to reward their progress.

Learn with and from your children

As the family maths toolkit points out, maths is not a can or cannot subject but something we can all improve on, however old we are. When your children start to bring home maths homework, take the opportunity to learn about new maths concepts from them and show them real world examples of how to put those skills into practice - by checking your shopping or phone bill. Encourage them to contextualise a newly acquired skill by putting it into practice around the home, whether it's telling you the time their favourite TV show comes on or estimating how long their bath takes to run. And always praise their effort rather than their talent, to reinforce the message that by working hard anyone can improve their maths skills. Rock with Shakespeare Primary school children across the nation are set to rock with Shakespeare in March for Shakespeare Week, the annual national schools celebration of Shakespeare. Kicking off Shakespeare Week 2017 will be the Big Assembly, where primary schools can join in the celebrations with a new song composed by Shakespeare Rocks’ Steve Titford. This year Shakespeare Week takes place 20-26 March and has a music theme. Jacqueline Green, Head of Learning and Participation at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust said: “The music theme will give primary school teachers the opportunity to take music into their classrooms and, with their children, to discover Shakespeare in new, intriguing and fun ways!” Shakespeare Week is a free scheme for primary school children and their families, run by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. To register, access free resources and take part in Shakespeare Week 2017, visit

Roasted Vegetables Pasta Bake Siobhan Berry of Mummy Cooks (mummycooks.ie) shares her tried and tested favourite that grown-ups will enjoy as much as children. Siobhan says: “Pesto is always a great hit in our house and this recipe allows for more vegetables to be added. I find that kids are more likely to try new vegetables with their favourite sauce on top. Roasting vegetables also makes them a little sweeter, so they are certain to enjoy this dish.” Makes 8 adult portions (freeze half for another day) 2 large red onions 1 large aubergine 2 large courgettes 2 red and orange pepper, deseeded and sliced 4 tbsp olive oil 4 tbsp pesto 250ml crème fraiche Freshly ground black pepper 500g pasta, cooked (I use wholegrain pasta) 150g cheddar cheese, grated

To freeze: Cool completely. Cover and freeze. Allow to thaw in the fridge overnight. Preheat oven to 190oC/375oF/Gas 5. Cook for 20 minutes, until piping hot To serve straight away: Cook in the oven for 15 minutes at 190oC and place in the centre of your table and allow your children to serve themselves, encouraging them to taste any new vegetables. As mum of two young girls Ashleigh (6) and Jessica (4), Siobhan Berry at Mummy Cooks is passionate about nutritious, home-cooked food. She wants to inspire, educate and empower parents to feed their children healthy, homecooked food. Siobhan believes that cooking is a fun activity that brings families together. www.MummyCooks.ie

1. Chop all the vegetables and preheat the oven to 190oC/375oF/Gas 5. 2. On a roasting dish, toss the vegetables in a drizzle of olive oil and roast in the oven for 40 minutes, until cooked and golden at the edges. 3. Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to the boil. Add the pasta and cook for about 6 minutes. Since you will be cooking the pasta for a second time in the oven, you want to make sure the inside is still hard. 4. Put the pesto and crème fraiche into a saucepan, season with ground black pepper, then heat gently for 2 minutes, stirring. 5. Mix the pasta and vegetables into the sauce. At this stage, I divide the mixture in two using one portion straight away and the second I freeze. Spoon the mixture into ovenproof dish, sprinkle with cheese.
