Inspiring confidence and pride in children through music making

Is Your Family Getting Enough Sleep? by Diane Pawsey, The Family Sleep Consultant Bringing your newborn home is an exciting time, filled with joy and happiness. Undoubtedly you may have some concerns, one being how to settle your baby to sleep during the day or night. Without good quality sleep as adults, we very quickly feel the effects of sleep deprivation, such as exhaustion, poor judgement, ill health and the feeling of not being able to cope. Sleep is also essential for a baby’s cognitive and physical development. Without the right amount of rest, your baby may become irritable, fretful and difficult to feed. As a result, family relationships can become frayed, which adds even more stress to the situation.

‘A good night’s sleep makes for a happy family’ Sleep problems can arise for many reasons. They could be due to poor health or bad sleep associations - or simply because your child has never learnt how to self-settle. Thankfully, there are many resources out there to help new parents find a sleep plan that may work for them. The downside is, after many hours of research, you are on your own. You will still be tired, and probably won’t be feeling confident about implementing the new routine. Feeling uncomfortable with the chosen technique often leads to parents not being consistent, which will lead to failure. All children are unique, so the sleep training technique that you use to teach your child to self-settle, and learn to love sleep, needs to be tailored. All caregivers need to be on the same page or your child will become confused. Sleep training isn’t a quick fix, so you need to be in it for the long haul if needs be - and you will need to support each other through the tough times. It is a challenge, but it’s worth it!

4

The good news is, once the right sleep plan is in place, your baby will reap the benefits of sleep ... and so will you. Their mood and behaviour will quickly change, lifting the spirit of the whole family.

Warwickshire Music gives children many opportunities to perform at various venues and experience the feeling of pride at performing in front of a live audience. This year alone there have been two full weekends of workshops and concerts at Warwick Arts Centre’s Butterworth Hall. The most recent was in May and Warwickshire Music was proud to have many of their young musicians taking part. From World Music to Rock & Pop and with hundreds of string players in between, the opportunity to be part of a major event on a big stage was eagerly taken by young musicians from across the county. See photos and video clips of all these performances, inspiring children to join our groups and be part of the Warwickshire Music family, at www.warwickshiremusichub.org

Proven tips to establishing good sleeping patterns: 1. Keep it calm Bedtime should be calm, lasting no more than half an hour. Toys in the cot/bed should be kept to a minimum. 2. Provide a good sleeping environment Use low lighting (with a blackout blind in summer) and maintain the correct room temperature between 16oC-20oC.

Stick on clothing labels

3. Learn your baby’s sleep signals These could include losing interest in toys and people, yawning, rubbing eyes or playing with their ears. Putting your baby to sleep when they are tired and ready to sleep just makes sense - knowing their sleep signals is key to achieving this. 4. Implement a good feeding and nap routine during the day Do not fall into the trap of thinking that less sleep in the day will lead to your baby sleeping more at night. This is a myth - the opposite is in fact true. Diane Pawsey has over 24 years’ experience working with children and their families and, as the Family Sleep Consultant, she specialises in helping them to establish healthy sleeping habits. With a gentle and caring approach, she works with the whole family to give them the tools and confidence to implement their own, tailor-made sleep plan. For more information, contact Diane on 07807 006167 or visit www.familysleepconsultant.co.uk

Get ready early for back to school this year with name labels for clothing, ties and uniforms. Stick on labels are the easy way to label clothing - no ironing or sewing necessary! Just stick the adhesive name label onto the care label of what you want to label and you’re finished. These high-quality labels are made to order in the UK and are developed especially for clothes, with strong adhesion to last many washes. Many other alternative name labels are also available as well as personalised gifts including major brands like Disney, Mattel and Nickelodeon. Labels4Kids is an award-winning family business that has been selling name labels online since 2004 and supplying John Lewis with school name labels since 2014. Order early, beat the rush and get some peace of mind this summer. Labels4Kids – because kids lose stuff. www.labels4kids.com/fam

Kyokushin Karate is the most well-known form of full-contact karate in the world, developed by Masutatsu Oyama in Japan. After more than 10 years living, training and teaching in Japan, Kenilworth resident Troy McConachy now offers instruction in Kyokushin Karate straight from the source. Training adheres to Japanese protocols of hard training, modesty and politeness, while developing strength in basic techniques and stances, kata, as well as practical applications in sparring and kumite. Karate training not only offers the chance to improve fitness and health, but also the chance to develop positive attitudes towards selfimprovement and the resilience to succeed in other areas of life.

The Pet Show brings L.A’s internet sensation, Tuna the dog, to Warwickshire this July! Now in its fourth year, the annual fur filled event, The Pet Show, is coming back to Warwickshire’s Stoneleigh Park, and this time it’s bigger and better. For 2016, the UK’s largest multi-pet event is teaming up with The Midlands Food & Drink Festival, so there’s literally something for Mum, Dad, the kids and even the pets! Taking place over the weekend of 23 and 24 July, the show is set to welcome some 20,000 people to the event, which this year boasts a variety of stunning live performances, including the hit internet sensation Tuna the dog, who will be flying all the way from the United States to be at this year’s Pet Show! With 1.3 million followers on Instagram, Tuna has developed a massive celebrity following with fans including Reese Witherspoon, Ariana Grande, Hilary Duff and Georgia May Jagger, so people attending The Pet Show are in for an exclusive treat with this lovable pooch. Ian Sear from The Pet Show said: “As a family run business, The Pet Show is not only ideal for occupying children during the summer break but it’s also great value for money and a chance to get outdoors with the entire family, tearing everyone away from their electronic devices for a day! “Four years on, the show is going from strength to strength and we’re really excited about this year’s line-up with one of the biggest internet sensations from 2015, plus the partnership with The Midlands Food & Drink Festival which will enable visitors to enjoy two shows for the price of one. It’s really not to be missed!”

In addition to the international appearance from Tuna, visitors to the show can expect a variety of unique displays and entertainment, including: n Pig Racing - watch the UK’s hottest new pets as they charge down a miniature racing course, demonstrating just how much fun these cute little guys can be. n Camel Racing - if you thought you needed to buy a plane ticket to the desert to see camels race, think again! n Britain’s Got Talent Scouts - if you’ve got a pet with an extraordinary talent be sure to check this out. This is where pet stars are found! n The Really Wild Show - Michaela Strachan will be performing her Really Wild Show Live! Have you ever wanted to know how far a spitting cobra can spit? Or do you want to know how to do polar bear dentistry? Whatever you fancy, this is a show for the all the family and one not to be missed! There’s plenty more to see, including unique halls devoted to different animal types, such as The Stables, which features everything an equestrian could need and The Kennels, where dog owners can take their own pet to mingle with the experts. Don’t miss the voucher for a Free Child entry below. www.thepetshow.co.uk

Summer Holidays Whilst booking your holiday last minute may be cheaper, having last minute conversations with your ex-partner only increases tension and makes it less likely to reach an amicable compromise. The earlier you are able to co-ordinate diaries with your ex-partner, taking into consideration respective work and other commitments, the better.

Be fair

Summer holidays are for giving your children lasting memories. You should try and ensure that your children can enjoy time with both you and your ex-partner. Refusing to agree on holidays or making your children feel guilty for wanting to spend time with your ex-partner may have a negative impact on them. Being flexible with your expartner when making arrangements may make them more likely to reciprocate with a flexible approach and assist you.

Be organised

“I’m taking the kids away that week!” By Carline Gayle-Buckle

The summer holidays are fast approaching and quite often deciding how the summer holidays should be split between you and your expartner can be a source of conflict. Disputes can often be avoided by following some basic principles.

Put your children first

Arrangements for your children should be based on what is in their best interests. Speak with your children to see what they would like to do. Try and take everyone’s wishes into consideration when discussing holiday arrangements. Keeping the children’s welfare at the centre of your negotiations should make reaching a compromise far easier.

Plan early

Give yourself plenty of time to negotiate and reach a compromise.

Supply all the information you have about your planned holiday to your ex-partner so that they can be comfortable with the plan. Do not book anything until the holiday has been agreed. Set up logistics for the handover of the children’s passports in good time before the set holiday dates. Avoid booking holiday dates which result in the children missing school or will result in them still suffering from jet-lag on the day they return to school. Your ex-partner will be unwilling to agree to any arrangements that clearly are not in your children’s best interests.

Mediation

Mediation can provide an ideal forum within which to discuss the arrangements for the children’s holidays or any other child related issues. It provides a forum where open and frank discussions can take place which is a preferable approach than having to make an application to court for a Judge to determine holiday arrangements. Making an application to court can be stressful and expensive and so should be viewed only as a last resort. Carline Gayle-Buckle is a specialist in family law at Moore & Tibbits solicitors. Tips for flying with young children Will you be travelling abroad with your young children this year? Here are some tips for a stress-free journey.

12. Dress children in layers as they can get too warm on a flight or too cold if the air conditioning is on full blast.

1. Inform the airline when you book your flight that you have young children and take advantage of all the extra help they offer parents.

13. Take non-battery toys and games with you like good old fashioned colouring books.

2. Check if your airport has a dedicated crèche. Some are equipped with toys, books and rest rooms. 3. Ask if you can take your buggy to the flight’s gate so your little one will have somewhere familiar to nap if your flight is delayed. 4. Pack plenty of wet wipes in your handbag. 5. Get your children used to drinking room temperature drinks as it can be difficult to keep bottles cool or warm them up at the airport. 6. Pre-book children’s meals on flights. They get served first and you’ll avoid the endless wait for food.

14. Let your child have their own carry-on bag of small games and treats. 15. Keep an eye on your child’s feet to make sure the seat in front doesn’t get kicked. But most of all; try to keep calm and enjoy yourself… it is your wellearned holiday too! Emma’s Diary is the UK’s most trusted and influential pregnancy and baby channel. Working in partnership with The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) for more than 23 years, they provide parents-to-be and new parents with the very best medical and practical information.

www.emmasdiary.co.uk

7. Breastfeed your baby, or have a drink ready for an older child when the flight is taking off and landing as the sucking motion will help equalise the pressure in the ears (often an uncomfortable cause of babies crying on flights). 8. Under-twos usually travel free as long as they sit on a parent’s lap for the entire flight. If your budget will stretch to it maybe pay the extra fare so you have an extra seat. 9. A seat near the bulkhead (where there is a division or toilet in front) may have a bit of extra room, so your toddler could play on the floor. 10. Take plenty of baby food and mini snacks with you. 11. Try to time your child’s day so they will have a nap on the flight. Some airlines provide pillows and blankets.

Summer Holidays

Fruity treats your child will love By Sally J Hall

Summer Days Out Here are some ideas for fantastic days out this summer. See www.familiesonline.co.uk for more! Hatton Adventure World

Fruity sticks

Tasty and refreshing, these colourful snacks will soon disappear! You will need n 3 thin plastic straws n Mixture of fruit such as grapes, strawberries, kiwi fruit, pineapple,

banana, apple

n Lemon or lime juice

How to make 1. Cut the larger fruit into squares and squeeze some lime or lemon juice over them to prevent them from going brown. 2. Push the straws through the pieces of fruit one at a time – make sure you mix up the colours to make it look extra special. Note: Children who are under four should not be offered whole grapes because of the danger of choking.

Snowy Strawberries

Super easy to make, they can be kept in the freezer and brought out after a hot day at school, holiday club or in the garden. You will need n 1 punnet of strawberries n 1 large pot Greek yoghurt

How to make 1. Wash the strawberries and trim the stalks and leaves off each one. 2. Put some of the Greek yoghurt in a bowl and roll each strawberry in the yoghurt. Lay them on a flat baking tray. 3. When you have covered all the fruit with the yoghurt, place the tray in the freezer on an empty shelf and leave to freeze overnight. You can then take them off the tray and store them in freezer bags until needed. Sally J.
