Help is at hand

Say goodbye to lost jumpers

A Stratford mum of three, Victoria Bean, is running Positive Parenting classes, which help you to manage behavioural situations, set boundaries, build your child’s self esteem and much more. Positive Parenting has been shown to have a huge impact on children’s achievement and ability to cope as they grow up. The course is also a great way to share experiences and realise you are not alone. Poplar Parenting also offers courses on how to deal with the thorny problems of alcohol, drugs and internet safety. For more information see www.poplarparenting.co.uk.

Labelling school uniform is a necessary evil: sewing takes forever, iron-ons fall off and biro looks tatty and washes off. But it can’t be avoided, because the one item you forget to label will instantly be lost – it’s as if the Lost Property box senses it and gobbles it up! So try this nifty little gadget, which clips on specially engraved plastic tags that don’t wash off or chafe your child – a life saver! They’re also easy to remove, when the Bring and Buy sale beckons.

On the website Important news for parents hoping for a Grammar school place

The Grammar schools in Warwickshire are bringing their 11 plus exams forward to September so that parents will know the results of their child’s 11 plus exam before they have to return their Local Authority school preference forms in October. Wendy Flynn explains why you have to register NOW if you want your child to sit the exam.

How to prepare your young child for the first days of school

You’ll know by now which primary school your child is due to go to in September, but are they ready? If your child can dress and feed themselves and follow rules they’ll settle in much more easily. Read Sarah Butters’ article on getting them prepared, so they feel more confident and get the most out of those early days.

St Nicholas in Alcester is judged “Outstanding” Staff and pupils at St Nicholas C of E Primary School in Alcester have been celebrating since Ofsted inspectors awarded them coveted “Outstanding” status. The school was created in 2006 from a merger of Alcester’s nursery and infant schools, and has shown consistent improvement with each Ofsted inspection, under the leadership of its Head Teacher Sally Staley. “We are all delighted with the findings of the Ofsted inspection,” said Mrs Staley. “It is a testament to all the hard work that has been put in over the last 8 and a half years, by the staff, pupils, their parents and governors.”

New circus skills classes A Warwickshire mum of two has turned her love of circus skills into a job, creating fun and unusual workshops for children and adults. “My main drive for my workshops is to get the kids out there, having fun whilst exercising,” says Geraldine Powell. “They don’t even realize they are working out!” Classes focus on poi, swinging balls on lengths of chain, which can be set on fire for amazing night-time displays. For children and training, however, Spin Poi use ultra-safe LED balls. As well as poi, there are opportunities to learn flower stick, unicycle and hula hooping, and other skills are due to be added. And the benefits go beyond developing some impressive party tricks, says Geraldine. “It also extends concentration and helps with meditation and relaxation”. www.spinpoi.co.uk

Babies use their senses Award-winning Baby Sensory classes are now being run in Stratford-upon-Avon, Leamington Spa and Warwick by Gemma O’Rourke. Baby Sensory is designed for babies from birth-13 months and consists of hundreds of sensory activities, including sign language, fibre optic light shows, bouncy light balls, holistic massage and much more. Each session also includes a discovery playtime, during which babies can enjoy the exploratory play area. “Baby Sensory has been a fantastic bonding opportunity,” says one parent. “The classes are always lively and lots of fun... This is the best class we have been to”. “The joy and sense of awe from seeing your baby learn, communicate and develop is worth the effort of squeezing it into your schedule,” says Gemma. What Happens at . . . Make A Mess

In the first of a new series, Gabrielle Starkey experiences Make A Mess at the Stratford Armouries. Make A Mess came about when Alix Hay, a mum of two, realised that although messy and tactile play is important for a child’s development, many mums are unwilling to do it at home. “There’s so much pressure to be clean and tidy at home,” says Suzanne, mum to Ava, 22months, “but it’s no good for the kids, is it?” At Make A Mess, children can choose from six activities (including water, painting, gloop, sand, playdough, shredded paper, jelly and much more), and try one or all of them over each 45 minute session. They can even mix them up! “It’s nice to come somewhere where there are no rules,” says Becky, mum to Beatrix, 20mths. “It works well as a contrast to more structured groups.” Also, with no routine or formal learning involved, children of different ages can play together, and extended family and friends can come along. “It’s particularly sociable here,” says Richard, whose two girls Lily (3½) and Poppy (1½) are busily playing with baked beans. “This has helped with their fussy eating, and it’s nice meeting other kids.” Emily (18 months), who’s with mum Kate and Grandpa Steve, is another child who’s been helped by messy play. “She was really reluctant to get messy,” says Kate. “The first time, she stood back for 10 minutes and watched. By the end, though, she was covered in gloop and mess! It’s really brought her out of herself and she’s made friends.” Meanwhile, another grandpa, Ian, is busy helping Agatha (18 months) to paint

with her feet. “We’re not allowed to do this, are we?” he laughs. “That’s why she loves it!” And she’s not the only one. “Ava says ‘Alix Make A Mess’ every day!” says Suzanne, while Reuben (3) and Joel (1) look forward to it too. “They love it,” says their mum Gillian. “Reuben is always excited and can’t wait to come, he talks about it a lot”. And the last word goes to Suzanne, mum to Helena (19months): “It’s the best thing we do, by a long way. It’s the most original, unusual thing, and she’s free – there’s no pressure and she’s happy”. When and where? Sessions in Stratford (Thursdays), Warwick (Fridays) and Chipping Campden (Tuesdays). The next full 5-week term will begin the week commencing 11th June, but new members are welcome part-way through the term if places are available. Cost: £5 per session, or £22.50 for a 5-week term. Discounts for siblings. Extras: Overalls are available to hire for just 50p per session.

Dry Like Me

Mums Mean Business: Advertising Feature

How a stress-saving idea by a Warwickshire mum has grown into a supermarket-shelf success story. Dry Like Me have been specially designed for children, with the best shape, size and structure to capture both liquid and solids and be comfortable to use. They give parents and children confidence to go out and about while toilet training, despite the odd accident.

In trials they reduced the number of accidents children had within one week. They are also cheaper than many other disposable alternatives and create less waste.

When Judith Hough’s son was potty training, the stress of constant “accidents” caused her to come up with a totally new concept. “My son was out of nappies, but having accidents and I sought medical advice on how to cope,” says Judith (above right). “I was told to continue with just pants and take my son out of nappies, but this wasn’t satisfactory. We were both getting stressed by all the accidents and constant washing of clothes. I became really frustrated that I couldn’t find anything suitable to help him with his toilet training that wasn’t a nappy. It was out of this frustration that I came up with the idea for Dry Like Me – potty training pads that are worn in a child’s own pants.” “I joined forces with friend and fellow mum, Diane Titterton. We did a lot of research to develop Dry Like Me and worked closely with the charity ERIC (Education and Resources for Improving Childhood continence), who I am delighted to say endorse the product.” Dry Like Me potty training pads are so different to other toilet training products because they allow children to progress to their own pants (which many parents and professionals believe is the best way to toilet train), and are more discreet for older children who may have accidents.

What makes the development of Dry Like Me even more important is that the number of children having accidents at school has risen, as has the age that children become potty trained. Recent research by ERIC found that 62% of primary school staff noticed an increase over the past five years, and the percentage rose to 71% of those working with 3-5 year olds. Nappy-style disposable toilet training pants may be contributing to the problem, because they are so absorbent that there is little incentive for children to get dry and they can miss the signals that they need the toilet. Dry Like Me pads strike a balance between reducing stress and mess, while not being so absorbent that they actually extend the time it takes to potty train.

Community paediatrician Dr Eve Fleming comments: “It is important to try to keep relaxed during toilet training. Dry Like Me pads can help to reduce the stress of accidents in potty training and make everyone feel more relaxed, while still allowing the child to progress to their own pants.” Recently, one mother wrote

“My husband bought them through Amazon and we have never looked back – they have literally saved my life! Thank you. I feel passionately about your product and thank you for designing it!”

On a tiny budget, these two mums have created a product that offers a real alternative to the big brands on the market. Judith and Diane have built distribution through major supermarkets and online, and developed relationships, via social media, with many grateful parents. Dry Like Me pads cost around £3.49 for a pack of 18. They are available from ASDA, Sainsbury, Morrisons and Wilkinsons and online from Ocado and Amazon.

For more information or to contact Judith and Diane go to www.drylikeme.com.

Party Time! One thing’s as sure as eggs is eggs – your child will have another birthday this year. Follow Sarah Butters’ guide to stress-free planning and throw a party to remember! DO plan early If you think you can book your first choice entertainer and venue a fortnight before your child’s party, think again. The best people and places are fully booked months in advance – and if they’re not, ask yourself why not.

DO consider a joint party If your child has a friend whose birthday falls around the same time, then instead of entering into a ‘Who can get the invite out first’ race with the other parents, why not club together? This is a great option that halves the cost and the stress. Make sure you and your party partner are clear about the planning and the expectations, though.

DON’T let your child decide the guest list If you let your little one take charge of who they’re inviting, they’ll leave out the friend they’ve just fallen out with. Tempting as it is to leave out the class troublemaker or the girl who leaves your daughter out, this is an approach that will only cause future heartache. Teach your child to be inclusive. For school-age children up to the age of 7, it’s best to stick to either a full class party, or one where you simply invite all the girls, or all the boys. For nursery aged children and over 7s, it’s fine to be more selective – tiny tots need smaller parties, and things tend to become more expensive as children get older. Taking 30 children to the cinema or painting pottery would break the bank.

DON’T be afraid to chase late replies

www.familieswarwickshire.co.uk

There are few things more irritating than chasing the parents who haven’t bothered to respond to a party invite. Give yourself a helping hand by putting an RSVP date on the invite. After that, don’t be afraid to

‘remind’ via text or over a pick up time chat in the playground. For those replies that never arrive (there will be some) head to your party venue armed with some extra food and a few unmarked party bags. Don’t let the unexpected guests (including uninvited siblings) catch you out!

you. Remember that it’s one meal, on one day and if all the birthday boy eats is a handful of Hula Hoops, a jam sandwich and a pack of Smarties then so what? You can force feed him broccoli for breakfast tomorrow.

DO check for allergies

It’s heartbreaking to receive a steady stream of ‘nos’ after you’ve spent weeks securing an entertainer and a venue on a particular date. Give yourself half a chance by avoiding key dates, like Mothers’ Day and Fathers’ Day, and religious holidays such as Easter Saturday and Yom Kippur. Parents tend to jet off on holiday as soon as school’s out, or just before term

In a group of 20 children, chances are there will be some allergies, and some children who can’t eat certain food for religious reasons. Don’t presume parents will inform you. Ask about special diets when you know who is coming along.

DO consider the date

DON’T over cater... You are feeding a group of children not an army of starving soldiers. Appetites shrink as excitement builds so there is no need to provide a smorgasbord of sandwiches. Stick to the tried and tested trio of party favourites – ham, jam and cheese. Throw in a selection of crisps and a couple of bowls of grapes, cucumber sticks and tomatoes.

and DON’T obsess over 5 a day There are certain things you can depend on. If you’re having a party in your garden, it will rain. If you’ve made 15 party bags, 17 children will turn up and ALL of your carefully cut cucumber, tomatoes and grapes will remain untouched by the end of the party tea! Be honest. You only put them out to make sure the Annabel Karmel Fan Club in the corner didn’t fall out with

begins again so avoid weekends at either end of the school holidays.

“Last year, Luca and his friend Ollie invited the whole class to Ragley Hall (www. ragleyhall.com) for their joint party. They burned off all their excitement in the adventure playground before a picnic tea, and I shared the cost with Ollie’s mum – it was a great success!” Gabrielle (editor).

DON’T invite too many children This is a mistake you’ll only make once. 30 children and 30 parents will fill even the most generous village hall. Add a bouncy castle and some uninvited siblings and you are nearly on riot watch.

“I searched for nice party bags for 7 years before I started sewing my own,” says Amanda Walker (www.amandawalkercrafts. co.uk). “I include one or two nice wooden toys in a lovely bag that can be reused – it pleases both mums and children.” Other suggestions include popping in a children’s magazine, a packet of seeds in the Spring (kids can even decorate their own plant pot as part of the party) or a book – The Book People do multipacks that can work out at £1 per book (www.thebookpeople.co.uk).

BEST FOR GIRLS more heartwarming than a child’s note of gratitude. If you want to be specific, keep a note of who gave what to your child, so they can write something about each present. Alternatively, if you want to seem the ultimate organised mum, include a preprepared thank you note in the home-time party bag. Bribing a child to write notes is easier when there’s the threat of a lost party on the horizon!

DO enjoy it There are times during the planning you will find this the most absurd piece of advice. How on earth can you expect to enjoy it? Remember that this is one of those ‘gone too quickly’ milestones and if you don’t press the pause button and enjoy the sight of your child laughing with the entertainer or bouncing with his friends then the stress simply isn’t worth it. When the balloons have burst and the cake is just crumbs, it’s those memories that will make you do it all again next year!

BEST FOR BOYS

The length of your party is very much dependant on the age of your children. But there is one consistent rule: make sure you put a finish time on your invites. Our party experts say one hour of entertainment is about as much as the average 2-4 year old can take, followed by half an hour for food and farewells. You can increase that to a two-hour party once children turn 5 years old.

Woe betide the mum who thinks she’s above a party bag. It’s a sure fire way to get your guests sobbing as they leave. Don’t fight it, simply be creative, try to avoid plastic tat and accept that simplicity is the key.

Cycling in Warwickshire

One of the best ways to enjoy cycling is in a group, and there’s no better group than your family! Karen Wood of Learning Early with Strider Bike gives her advice on riding with the ones you love. We are all aware of the problems Choosing equipment of obesity and with a shocking Bikes need to complement your lifestyle so, before you buy, think about where you want 10% of children in the UK now to use them. Depending on the ages of your clinically obese (British Medical children and your levels of fitness, you may Association), cycling is a great way need racers or mountain bikes for sporty action, hybrids for a mixture of road and to spend quality time together, trail riding, plus smaller models and balance bikes for the children. Whilst you tend to get get fitter and – after the initial what you pay for, the most important part equipment has been bought – it’s is the right size frame. If you also intend to use your bike to commute, find out if your a cheap, fun activity. Children as employer runs a cycle-to-work scheme – you young as 2 years old are now able could save up to 40%. Once the bikes are chosen, remember to take a spare inner tube to cycle using balance bikes, so and a puncture kit to keep them moving, plus there really is no excuse for the a good quality helmet and a drink. It’s also whole family not to join in. worth investing in a bike lock so you can pop in for tea and cake en route!

Stay safe According to a recent Sustrans survey, more than half of us believe the roads are too unsafe to cycle on, but we have two routes of The National Cycle Network - safe and attractive routes perfect for family bike rides - here in Warwickshire. The first completed routes crisscross Stratford-upon-Avon, from Oxford to Birmingham, and across to Warwick, Leamington and Rugby. There are two more in development, out to Solihull and Coventry, and whilst these routes may be too far for small children, they can be broken into shorter sections using local bike paths. Another alternative, if you have very small children, is to try the Stratford, Kenilworth or Offchurch Greenways. As these follow the disused old train lines, they are flat and completely traffic-free – perfect for little ones.

13

Children make wonderful cycling companions – they’re adaptable, energetic and want to have fun. Just follow Karen’s simple rules to ensure that it’s an enjoyable experience! Before the Ride Do your homework: Make certain you are familiar with the bike route. If you get lost or the route is longer than expected, your child may suffer not only from a diminished experience, but potentially in more serious ways such as dehydration or exposure – older children will enjoy the planning too and might even learn some geography if you look at a map together.

Start early: Children tend to tire quickly in the afternoon. Take advantage of their energy in the morning and start your ride early. Invite playmates: Cycling is more fun when shared. If your child has a friend who is at the same level of competency on a bike, bring him or her along.

Slow down: Realize that a 4-mile ride may take 2 hours. Don’t expect to ride as fast as you would on your own. The Stratford one also has a brilliant café made out of an old train carriage, plus bike hire and free parking. Plus, all of the County Council-owned country parks have surfaced paths, which make cycling simple for little ones, plus playgrounds and cafés at Ryton Pools and Kingsbury Water Park.

Lead from the front If you want your kids to be enthusiastic about cycling then you need to lead by example. Women who thought their bike days were over are being welcomed at rides designed just for women – check out Diva 100, Breeze and Cycletta (see the box – and the advert – on the next page for more info). Endorsed by celebrities including Davina McCall, Gabby Logan and top cyclists such as Victoria Pendleton, they offer a great chance to get back on your bike in like-minded company. Similarly, why not get the whole family fired up about the sport by attending a cycling festival? They combine races with more family-friendly rides, plus lots of fun on the side, from stunt riders to music and entertainment. There are cycling festivals in Stratford and Coventry very soon (see the box on the opposite page for more details).

So, dust off your bike – or indulge in some cycle-themed retail therapy – and lead your family out on an adventurous ride into fun and fitness. Happy biking!

14

Be aware of traffic: What might seem like light traffic to you could be a more dangerous situation for your child, whether biking separately or in a trailer.

Be prepared: Carry a tool kit and know how to use it. Also, carry a first-aid kit that includes a few bandages and antibiotic cream to handle minor cases of road rash. Dress right: Bring a daypack to hold extra jackets in case the weather changes. Also, try to wear bright clothing or reflective sashes, to aid your visibility.

On the Ride Take breaks: Plan on taking a lot of short breaks. Allow time to stop, get off the bike and explore.

Drink water: Always have water readily available. Try to drink before feeling thirsty to stay hydrated.

Eat snacks: A well-timed snack can defuse a squabble or bad mood and keep energy going. Kids tend to misbehave more when they’re tired, hungry or thirsty.

Make it fun: Choose an interesting route that goes by gardens, streams, views, farms or a favourite shop. Most children are more interested in what they can see along the route rather than what’s at the end of the road or trail.

Express enthusiasm: If you convey a genuinely upbeat attitude, children most often will be inclined to mimic it.
