‘Grannannying’ is the Word
“It’s suitable for all ages and fitness levels, simple to learn and really sociable” says Kathrin Foster, your South Warwickshire Nordic Walking UK Instructor. “By using the specially designed poles, you can use all the major muscles in the body and burn up to twice as many calories as ordinary walking but the best thing is that the poles actually propel you along so it feels easier!”
The trend of grandparents providing vital, day-to-day support to their grandchildren known as ‘grannannying’ is more widespread than you may have thought according to a new YouGov poll for Age UK. Two-fifths (40%) of the nation’s grandparents over the age of 50 - 5 million - have provided regular childcare for their grandchildren, according to the survey. The vast majority did so once a week but a fifth provided support 4 to 6 times a week.
Come along and give it a try in one of Kathrin’s free taster sessions. For further information contact Kathrin directly via 07875 609324 or www.arrowandarden.co.uk
Revealing the pivotal role that many grandparents play in reducing the financial burden of childcare, over half of grandparents said their help had enabled their own child/children to work more to
support their family. But it’s not all one way. Nearly all grandparents (88%) said they enjoyed the time spent with their grandchildren and half felt it kept them physical and mentally active. For more information about the survey, visit www.ageuk.co.uk
Out of School Activities Improve Educational Attainment A study by researchers from NatCen Social Research at Newcastle University has found that children who take part in organised sports and after school clubs can improve primary school academic performance and social skills. The study of 6,400 children in England found that those who took part in organised sports and physical activities at the ages of 5, 7 and 11 were almost one and a half times more likely to reach a higher than expected level in their Key Stage 2 (KS2) maths test at the age of 11. According to the Lead Investigator, Emily Tanner of NatCen said “Results showed that sports clubs were positively associated with attainment outcomes at age 11, even when accounting for prior attainment at age 7.” The research also found that disadvantaged children who attended after-school clubs developed better social, emotional and behavioural skills than those, also from similar social circumstances, who did not. An Hour of Moderate Exercise Every Day for Children
Spanish & French Classes in Leamington Spa, Stratford, Coventry & Rugby
By Andrew Campbell The number of children meeting the recommended amount of physical activity for healthy development and to maintain a healthy weight, which is 60 minutes a day, drops by 40% as they move through primary school. A new survey from Public Health England (PHE) and Disney looking at the effects of physical activity on children’s emotional wellbeing, found: • being active made the majority of 5 to 11 year olds feel happier, more confident and more sociable, according to their parents • nearly all children said they liked being active • the main motivations for kids to be more active were having friends to join in and having more sports or activities they liked to choose from • children’s overall happiness declines with age; 64% of 5 and 6 year olds said they always feel happy, compared to just 48% of 11 year olds Currently, just under a quarter of boys and fewer girls meet the national recommended familiesonline.co.uk
Music, instruments, bubbles, sensory play, dance, puppets, elements of baby massage & yoga
level of activity. Furthermore, 1 in 5 children start primary school overweight or obese, rising to more than a third by the time they leave. The survey identified the main barriers to physical activity and reveals that the worry of ‘not being very good’ was one of the most common. This increases with age. Parents are being urged to try new sports and physical activities locally, whether at their local park leisure centre or via a popular sport in an effort to help children get more of the 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity they need each day for healthy development and to maintain a healthy weight. As part of its campaign to assist children to engage in enough physical activity, a national 10 Minute Shake Ups programme run by the PHE offers fun, 10-minute activities for kids, featuring their favourite Disney characters and shows as inspiration.

Five Keys to 11 Plus Success With just under 5 months left before the Warwickshire 11 Plus Exams, now is the time to plan in order to give your child the best chance of success. Below are five ways that you can help your child achieve a grammar school place. Knowledge: Make sure that your child has covered material that is relevant to the 11 Plus Exams. Confidence: Your child needs to become confident in examination conditions. Consistency: Help your child to perform at a high level consistently over time. Familiarity: It is vital that your child becomes familiar with the 11 Plus exam format and process. Reassurance: Help your child to ease nerves by letting them know you are proud of their efforts. Sitting a series of 11 Plus Mock Exams can help to improve your child’s examination performance. To book 11 Plus Mock Exams visit www.11plusmocks.co.uk
Help ABRSM Take Your Child’s Music Further “I would teach children music, physics and philosophy; but most importantly music, for the patterns in music and all the arts are the keys to learning.” Plato
New Times Table Test for Year 4 Pupils The government has announced plans to have all Year 4 pupils sit a compulsory times table test. The test will be tried out in a sample of schools with it being made available on a voluntary basis to all schools across England from June 2019. It will become mandatory in June 2020. The test has been described by the Government as a 5 minute “on-screen check” which is designed to help ensure children know the multiplication tables up to 12 off by heart and has been designed to avoid causing additional stress for children and teachers. The Government has also said results from the check will not be published at school-level, and will not be used by Ofsted and others to force changes in schools. Some teachers’ unions have expressed strong concerns about the introduction of another test being an unnecessary additional burden on schools.
6 Families Warwickshire 01926 335004 editor@familieswarwickshire.co.uk
Our understanding of the benefits of music education for children has come a long way since Plato coined these words. We now know that musical experiences in childhood can boost brain development, igniting intellectual, social, motor, language and literacy skills. We also know that music – both the exposure to and the learning of – can benefit any child. There are still questions, of course. What’s a good age for a child to pick up an instrument? How do you know when they’re not a beginner anymore? What does musical progress actually look like? ABRSM is all about finding answers to these questions. As one of the world’s largest music education bodies, ABRSM set up The Music Commission last year to carry out a fundamental review of how to best support progression in music. The Music Commission survey is the first step. Whether you’re a parent of a learner, a learner yourself or someone who’s simply interested in music education, your thoughts about the way things currently are will help shape how things WILL be. Princethorpe Passes ISI Inspection With Flying Colours
What’s it like at Alcester Grammar School?
Princethorpe College has passed a recent Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) regulatory compliance inspection with flying colours.
Alcester Grammar School is a unique institution that offers a rich curriculum and a broad all-round education. The school prides itself on its warm and purposeful atmosphere, underpinned by the dedication and talent of the staff and the enthusiasm of the students. As well as a focus on the intellectual achievement of each student, Alcester Grammar School is committed to enhancing their enjoyment and interest in the whole school experience. Staff give freely of their time and the school offers a comprehensive programme of sport, music and drama, as well as numerous opportunities for trips and visits in the UK and internationally.
The Catholic co-educational independent day school, which has around 900 pupils aged 11 to 18, was inspected in mid-February and has been judged to have met all of the eight standards required of it. Areas examined in terms of compliance include the quality of education provided, welfare, health and safety of pupils and the quality of leadership and management of the school. Amongst its findings the report comments on ‘GCSE performance from 2014 to 2016 (the period covered by the inspection) being above the national average’, ‘that principles and values are actively promoted which facilitate the personal development of pupils’ and that ‘the leadership and management demonstrate good skills and knowledge and fulfil their responsibilities effectively’. A full copy of the report is available from the ISI and from the College’s website: www.princethorpe.co.uk/about-princethorpe/ inspection-reports
The curriculum is broad and rich, with all students following a full range of subjects in their first three years. After their GCSE exams in year 11, the sixth form offers a free choice of over 25 A level subjects, with students able to choose any four in the first instance. Academic results are excellent, but never at the expense of personal development or enjoyment of school life. Students and staff know that the best success is happy success, and it’s that which makes being at AGS such a great foundation for the challenges of adult life. www.alcestergs.co.uk

Explore, discover and play at The Children’s Play Village After much anticipation, The Children’s Play Village opened its doors in April and it was well worth the wait! Located just outside Warwick, we went along in the Easter holidays and had a brilliant afternoon. It’s clear that a lot of thought, planning, hard work and time has been spent in not only creating the village, but in developing the whole experience. There is so much attention to detail in the play facility itself, from the set design to the play equipment, all aimed to set children’s imaginations on fire and sprinkle some magic during their imaginative and creative playtime. The friendly and enthusiastic Play Makers are there to play with the children and make sure they have lots of fun. The bistro serves a good range of tasty hot and cold food and drinks. The Children’s Play Village is for any child of any age, with the role play areas designed to appeal to children aged 3 and upwards. My 12 and 10 year old daughters were completely engrossed the whole time, washing each other’s hair at Orly’s Hair Salon, doing the weekly shop at the Supermarket, looking after poorly animals at the Village Vets and delivering post throughout the Village! It was a huge hit and lovely to see them off their screens and engaged in creative, imaginative play. My 3 year old godson was busy making and serving ice-creams, fixing the wall on the Town Hall and playing with the dogs at the Vets. There’s a lovely area for babies right in the centre so tiny tots can sit and play, or watch the older children busy around the Village. At the end of each session, children are encouraged to help with the tidying up and everything is put back in its place ready for the next session. There are 3 sessions a day – head to the website for more information and to book. I’ve already been asked when we’re going again! www.childrensplayvillage.co.uk www.facebook.com/childrensplayvillage
