Child car seat safety Only half of the cars claiming to accommodate three child car seats at once can actually fit them in, according to new research by the UK car buying website What Car? By law, children must use car seats – whether secured by seatbelts or Isofix brackets – until they are 12-years-old or 135cm tall, meaning that the size and type of child car seats used for three children can vary considerably in size and style. What Car? found the MPV category proved to be the best performer, with four of the six seven-seat cars tested able to accommodate three car seats across the middle row. What Car? consumer editor Claire Evans, who conducted the research, said: “Our research highlights the need for parents to check that their child seats will fit properly into a car before buying it.”

B Britain’s little h helpers A survey of 1,439 UK adults carried out b Emo Oil found that 68% believe it is by im important that children help out with h household chores and tasks. In fact, the average British parent starts to encourage their children to help out with w household tasks from the age of o 6. More than half (54%) of those surveyed said doing chores was the most popular tactic to promote positive behaviour. These chores include washing up (39%), making the bed (35%), setting the table (24%) and looking after younger siblings (37%). Suzanne Waddell, group marketing manager at Emo Oil, commented: “Getting children involved doesn’t have to be dull. Why not try to make it more fun by making a game out of it, or encouraging them to sing songs when they are doing these tasks?” Birmingham came second in this pole, with 39% of local parents getting their children to muck in with household chores, behind Bristol at 44%.

Help ABRSM take your child’s music further “I would teach children music, physics and philosophy; but most importantly music, for the patterns in music and all the arts are the keys to learning.” Plato Our understanding of the benefits of music education for children has come a long way since Plato coined these words. We now know that musical experiences in childhood can boost brain development, igniting intellectual, social, motor, language and literacy skills. We also know that music – both the exposure to and the learning of – can benefit any child. There are still questions, of course. What’s a good age for a child to pick up an instrument? How do you know when they’re not a beginner anymore? What does musical progress actually look like? ABRSM is all about finding answers to these questions. As one of the world’s largest music education bodies, ABRSM set up The Music Commission last year to carry out a fundamental review of how to best support progression in music. The Music Commission survey is the first step. Whether you’re a parent of a learner, a learner yourself or someone who’s simply interested in music education, your thoughts about the way things currently are will help shape how things WILL be. Protect kids from #FOMO with #JOMO Parents are urged to protect their children from the negative health effects of social media by helping them discover the ‘Joys of Missing Out’ #JOMO. According to Dr Georgia Henderson, a clinical psychologist working with young people at the Priory Hospital in London, social media is endlessly demanding, leading to toxic feelings of inadequacy amongst young people. #JOMO is the opposite of #FOMO, where young people constantly check their smartphones because of the ‘Fear of Missing Out’ on conversations or social events. The ‘what and why’ of #JOMO: • “When we turn off – we have to reconnect to the real world.” • People are at their most intelligent, productive and calm when they can slow their thoughts down and use mindfulness. • There is increasing pressure on young people to be more mature than they are ready for in relationships as a result of social media, so why not pause and step away? • Parents modelling good boundaries around their own ability to shut off technology is the best way to show that being with your kids is enough. • Self-esteem. Young people who spend a lot of time on social media are more likely to rely on external approval and physical attractiveness, rather

Deaf Awareness Week 14 – 20 May 2018 National charity Action on Hearing Loss is urging people to abandon any stereotypes they might have about the 11 million adults and children living with hearing loss in the UK and help bridge the communication gap for Deaf Awareness Week. Here are some useful tips from Action on Hearing Loss you can use when speaking to those with hearing loss and deafness: • Make sure you have face-to-face contact with the person you are talking to. • Don't shout, and don't exaggerate your mouth movements when you speak. • If someone doesn't understand what you've said, try saying it in a different way. • Make it easy to lipread. Speak clearly and don’t cover your mouth with your hands or clothing. www.actiononhearingloss.org.uk/daw

Out of school activities improve educational attainment Researchers have found that children who take part in extracurricular clubs can improve academic performance and social skills. NatCen’s study of 6,400 children across England found that those who took part in arts activities and sports at the ages of 5, 7 and 11 were almost one and a half times more likely to reach a higher than expected level in their Key Stage 2 (KS2) maths test at the age of 11. Emily Tanner, Lead Investigator of NatCen Social Research at Newcastle University said “Results showed that sports clubs were positively associated with attainment outcomes at age 11, even when accounting for prior attainment at age 7.” The research also found that disadvantaged children who attended after-school clubs developed better social, emotional and behavioural skills than those, also from similar social circumstances, who did not. www.ucl.ac.uk

Does your child need a tutor? by Claire Winter In the last decade, the number of children who have a tutor has increased by one third. At some point in their academic journey your child may need some additional support. This may be because you are preparing them for the 11 Plus, school entrance exams or because they are struggling in a particular subject. A tutor will teach your child a specific subject or exam technique. You can opt for 1:1 tutoring or tutoring in a small group or class. You can find a tutor via a tutoring agency, through your school or via online searches. There are also online programmes and companies that offer a mixture of online and offline support. Tutoring can be expensive and ranges from £20-50 an hour depending on the tutor and where you live. Tutoring via Skype can be cheaper and starts at around £15 per hour.

When does a child benefit from tutoring? If they have lost confidence then tutoring will help them boost their self-belief. If they are struggling with a particular subject, and their teacher has flagged it as a cause for concern. If they need to improve their grades to pass an upcoming exam.

Parenting and work

Mums in Business Do you dream about working flexible hours, enjoying more free time with your family, being there for sports days and school concerts, and generally achieving a healthier work/life balance? Have you ever considered working for yourself? Quitting your job to work go self-employed is a huge step, and a daunting prospect for many, however if you have an entrepreneurial spirit you could end up feeling happier and healthier working for yourself. Below, take a look at the experiences of two local mums who took the plunge and went into business – one by following a proven business model based on a simple system, the other by creating her own start-up business...

‘Wifi Wage’ with the Woodstocks

by Amy Cunningham Founder and MD of The Strings Club, multi-award winning musical experiences for children aged 4-11 I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit, so after I spent 10 years teaching music in schools, I decided to go it alone. In 2012 I organised my first musical camp in North London. Six children attended. At the end of the holiday camp one of the mums came up and asked when the next camp would be held. The Strings Club was born! Fast forward to 2018, we now have The Strings Club in seven Amy Cunningham with young strings players locations in London and two in the West Midlands. I am passionate about music being for everyone. To that end, we aim to inspire 25,000 new children with music this year by holding free Discovery Days across our locations. We pride ourselves on offering quality care which, starting at £4.38 per hour, is excellent value for money. The camps are full of activities which keep kids entertained right up until pick-up time. We give children an opportunity to discover and engage with music in a rewarding, enriching and fun way. To manage parenthood with my working week I keep to a strict daily routine and I ensure my days off with my 3 year old daughter are all about her – after all she’s my favourite person in the whole world! And I know I won’t be able to buy that time back. On days off I switch off ‘Work Amy’ and go into Mummy-Mode. Running my own business Amy Cunningham (centre) affords me that flexibility. wins an award Entrepreneurs are the backbone of the UK and of our economy, and to set up your own business I believe you’ve got to be fearless. If you are thinking of starting up on your own think it through carefully to make sure this is right for you: • There’ll be much blood, sweat and tears on the road to success - do you have enough of a passion for it? Remember, it’s unlikely you’ll make money out of it straight away. People can be put off by this fact, but you have to be realistic. • Carry out plenty of market research. Do a SWOT analysis (investigate Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats). And if you do decide to set up your own business: • Be clear and concise about your brand’s key messages. • Set up a website - make sure your key messages are there. • Blog and get onto social media. Create a call to action, and make sure your business website has a 24/7 booking facility. The Strings Club multi-award holiday camps take place in May half term and then for the whole six week summer holiday. If you recommend The Strings Club to a friend you get a free day on a holiday camp (T&Cs apply). Coming this summer: ‘Quaver Concerts’ affordable concerts for young families to enjoy. The Strings Club awards include: Nectar Start-Up Business of the Year, Winner 2013; Great British Entrepreneur Awards, Winner 2017; Federation of Small Business Award, 2018. www.thestringsclub.org

by Lesha Woodstock A few years ago my daughter would regularly say, "Mum, please don’t leave.” I would kiss her and try to explain that I had to go to work, but I could see in her eyes that she didn’t understand… This made me decide to take positive action and build up a homebased business. Nowadays, many mums I know talk to me about my business to see if they od can do it too. They can. sto And so can YOU! ck f amily Do you want to earn a stable, residual income parttime, in order to expand your options while making a difference? With a simple system you can build a business using your mobile phone and earn a 'Wifi Wage' Hard-working professionals can have the choice to build their own dreams instead of someone else’s. I went from an overworked and underpaid corporate career to one with more flexibility, achieving a healthier work/life balance. I want to help you achieve your dreams too. Making the most of parents’ evening by Justina Gapper Schools are required to hold at least one parents’ evening a year to enable parents to keep up-todate with their child’s progress and forge good relationships with the school. What to expect Whilst Parents’ Evenings will vary slightly in format, you should expect, as a minimum, to hear how your child is performing in numeracy and literacy against the expected levels for their age group. Much more information will be conveyed as your child gets older. Consultations may also cover your child’s behaviour, levels of effort, and social and emotional development. Before parents’ evening: • Talk to your child: Find out how they feel they are getting on, and if there is anything they’d like you to ask. • Write down any questions you’d like to ask the teacher At parents’ evening: • Listen: It’s best to let the teacher speak first so that they can cover everything they need. However, if you have any queries do ask.

10 Families Birmingham, Solihull and Sutton Coldfield

• The bigger picture: The teacher may wish to discuss matters other than academic progress, e.g. your child’s rapport with staff and how they get along with their peers. • Don't compare your child against other children in the class. • Deal with unexpected news productively. If you hear something you did not anticipate, discuss how you can work with your child to better support them. • Focus on your child’s attitude to learning. This is as important as achievement as it reveals a lot about your child’s behaviour, character and motivation. Next steps? It’s a good idea to ask the teacher how you can help to support your child outside of the classroom – ask for any tricks they may have to help you with this. Discuss whether there’s a way of keeping in touch regularly should any more questions arise. Write a summary of the consultation afterwards Shortly after the meeting make a written record of what was said to show other family members who weren’t there. Feedback Let your child know how the evening went and discuss it with them. Find a way of working together on the points raised by the teacher to ensure continued progress. Justina Gapper is a Families reader and mum of 9 year old twins, Ruby and Sam.

Enjoying the GREAT OUTDOORS by Claire Winter

The weather is getting warmer and the summer holidays are looming. Families takes a look at some cool, outdoor adventure activities to get everyone off their screens and exploring the great outdoors. Park Run If you haven’t come across the phenomena that is Park Run check out our local ones at Brueton Park, Cannon Hill Park, Cannock Chase, The Dell Stadium (Dudley), and Kingsbury Water Park. Volunteers set up 5km races in parks and there are now 500 locations across the UK. Some of these venues also do shorter runs for kids aged 4 to 14, which are 2km long. It’s a great way to exercise and best of all it’s free! www.parkrun.org.uk

Coasteering Make an early start, and head off to the coast for an exhilarating day of coasteering. This is an activity that allows you to explore rocks and the sea. It combines rock climbing and scrambling, with jumping and swimming in the water. Britain has an amazing and varied coastline and many locations that offer coasteering. You wear a wetsuit and helmet for the activity, and it is suitable for children aged 8+. Favourite locations are in Wales www.celticquestcoasteering.com, Dorset and Cornwall www.xtremecoasteering.co.uk.

Orienteering Never get lost again! Orienteering is a great activity to do as a family and teaches your kids map reading, navigation, problem solving, and gets them learning how to use a compass. Some outdoor centres offer beginner, intermediate and advanced navigation courses. More information at www.britishorienteering.org.uk.

Ziplining Adrenaline junkies can experience Europe’s fastest zipline in Wales. The Zip World Penrhyn Quarry in North Wales is also the longest zip wire in the world. There are age and height restrictions for each activity (starting from 3+), so do check their website for details. More information at www.zipworld.co.uk. familiesonline.co.uk

Aqua Parks Outdoor water play parks are popping up all over the Midlands, and they offer a great way to burn off some steam during the warmer months. You can wear wetsuits and can usually go up until the end of September. Look up Mary Stevens water park in Stourbridge www.marystevenspark.org which has a toddler area, WiBit Aqua Park www.cotswoldcountryparkandbeach.com, and Droitwich Spa Lido www.wychavonleisure.co.uk which has a wet play area for kids complete with water cannons.

Caving If you are feeling really brave, why not try a family caving trip? Not good if you don’t like enclosed spaces, but the kids will love the challenge of exploring underground. Caving specialist www.gocave.com offers a variety of caving trips for people aged 6 to 60 in a variety of locations around the UK.

Wilderness Survival Embrace your inner Ray Mears by trying one of the many bush craft or wilderness survival courses on offer. You can take the whole family on a one of the Thrillseekers or Bushcraft courses held at Ackers Adventure Birmingham www.ackers-adventure.co.uk, and have fun learning basic outdoor and survival skills.

Canoeing A canoe is perfect for a family adventure afloat. You can canoe on lakes, rivers and the sea and it’s an accessible sport for the whole family. You can share kayaks and double canoes too. Suitable for children aged 8+, this activity is fabulous fun for the whole family. You can find canoeing activities at www.britishcanoeing.org.uk.

Wild Swimming Swimming in hidden lakes, rivers and secret coves is all part of the wild swimming movement. You can check out places to visit via their website at www.wildswimming.co.uk. Please ensure that you and your family are strong swimmers and stay safe at all times.
