Get Bowled Over at Superbowl UK Located in Stadium Plaza, Superbowl UK Cardiff has fun covered for the whole family come rain or sunshine this Summer. So why choose Superbowl UK Cardiff? We’ve highlighted 10 reasons to choose us! 1 Bowling is weather-proof! Raining? No problem. Snowing? No problem. Heat wave? We have air conditioning... no problem. 2 There’s no equipment required!
You can just show up at the bowling alley, and we’ve got everything you need! 3 Bowling is great for groups of all
sizes and we’ve got you covered. Whether you have a family reunion heading your way or just looking for something to do, bowling suits every occasion. 4 Almost anyone can do it. You can request ramps to help the youngest and oldest in your groups get the balls down the lane, and you can
pop those handy bumpers up for you on your off days. Oops, we mean for the kids. That’s right, for the kids. 5 It’s perfect for a little fun, healthy competition. We can’t encourage big-time betting, but a little “the loser does the dishes for a week” competition between spouses or siblings adds a whole new level of fun! 6 You can eat and drink while playing. How many sports have built in bars and grills for the players? Beer or soft drink, fries or burgers — you really can’t beat it.
9 Parties - Have you ever tried throwing a five-year-old’s birthday party at home? Well, you don’t need to worry - we cater for all occasions! 10 We’re conveniently located in Stadium Plaza - right next to the Principality Stadium. Finish your shopping and then come and relax with the family at Superbowl UK. We’re open from 9am-Midnight every day.
7 Crazy celebrations aren’t just encouraged, they are required! Dad’s celebration dance may just top your best moonwalk, but there’s one thing for sure, nothing’s too over the top when you finally conquer all 10 pins. 8 You get to sport great shoes.
Come on. When else do you get to wear freshly sanitised, tricolored beauties? Sport them with pride.

14 days. That’s how long into the school holidays it takes, on average, for children to mutter the two words every parent and grandparent dreads hearing: “I’m bored!” Research by the National Citizen Service also shows that parents want kids to move away from their screens and have a fun-filled break that ensures they keep learning and developing during the time off—and all the while not breaking the bank of mum and dad!

Maths anxiety is real concern Children as young as eight can feel fear, rage and despair as a result of ‘maths anxiety’, a condition which may severely disrupt performance. Researchers at Cambridge University found that children can find find themselves locked in a vicious circle; suffering from anxiety which harms their maths performance, which in turn leads to increased anxiety.
Going to nursery improves behaviour Children who go to nursery are better behaved and have fewer emotional problems than those cared for by family or a childminder, a new study has found. Little ones who attended nursery, crèche or day care centre staffed by professionals for a year or more found it easier to make friends and had better social skills than youngsters who stayed at home. Researchers believe that the combination of stimulating play, more time spent reading, and following rules from a young age enables children to thrive in a nursery setting. The study by the Sorbonne University in France looked at the factors involved in childhood health and development using a survey of 1,428 children. It tracked their emotional development from birth up to age eight. Previous research has suggested early childcare can boost a child’s language and thinking skills, and may improve their academic performance.

Family glamping on your doorstep REVIEW: Under The Oak Pen y Waun Farm Caerphilly CF83 8ER
Great food, gorgeous views, with a little luxury thrown in for good measure is the perfect recipe for a local family nature break, discovers Families Cardiff’s Managing Editor, Rebecca Lewis... As a family, our wish list for the perfect glamping getaway is long and, some might say, verging on the unrealistic. For the kids, there’s endless space to run around, nooks and crannies to hide in, with bonus points for animals to feed and stroke. For Dad, practicalities come first: a solid barbecue set-up, quality meat to throw on the charcoals, comfy outdoor seating to enjoy beautiful scenery, sunset views and starry skies. As for Mum (that’s me), the requirements are a comfy bed, toilet and washing facilities that minimise the need for wet wipes, and, all being well, a corkscrew and a hot tub. Happily, Under The Oak—a trio of safari lodges spaced around a pond in the tranquil corner of Pen Y Waun Farm, high up in the Bedwas hills—delivers on all fronts. The website promises a chance to get away from the hustle and bustle, and as we stand on our veranda, cushioned by rolling green hills, there’s already a sense of life’s worries falling away. Inside, we’re delighted to discover a spacious bathroom with a walk-in shower and (yes!) a flushing loo. At the heart of our temporary home, an indoor wood burner makes redundant at least one of the ‘extra layer’ bags packed. Family harmony is temporarily put in jeopardy on discovery of the cwtch—a double bed tucked
inside a fairy-lit cupboard accessed by a ladder. Who will sleep in this little gem? We spend a few minutes pretending this is actually up for debate before the three-year-old inevitably climbs in and declares it hers. Hours roll by as views are enjoyed, books are read, marshmallows are toasted, and the kids’ imaginations take flight, finding endless wonder in the outdoor mud kitchen, rolling down verges and feeding the ducks. Dinner is served around the fire pit, a toast being made to the local butcher, down in the village, who supplied our feast (Buckland’s, 18 Church St). Our after-dinner entertainment arrives: a herd of escapee cows taking up residence in the field next door. Then the kids settle in for the night with bellies full of hot dogs and the promise of a breakfast of farm fresh eggs and another day of adventures. As the stars put in an appearance, we slip into the hot tub and add one final item to our glamping wish list: somewhere that makes us feel we’ve discovered something we want to share with others. Job done. Stays at Under The Oak start from £100 per night. Safari lodges can accommodate up to 6 adults; exclusive hire is available for larger groups. www.undertheoakglamping.co.uk
READER Under The Oak is offering Families Cardiff & Vale OFFER readers a free family barbecue hamper worth £35, containing premium sausages, chicken, beef burgers, buns, salad and marshmallows. The offer is valid with any stay until the end of October half term 2019. Add the hamper to your booking and add code FAMILYBBQ at www.undertheoakglamping.co.uk

The accolades awarded to this family farm for its impressive ice cream are too many to list. Suffice to say this isn’t somewhere you pop for a 99 cone. OUTDOOR FUN
Fun, free activities in nature this summer We asked the Woodland Trust for its top pick of holiday adventures to make children fall in love with the outdoors. and friends. Decide how many points each challenge is worth. Here are some challenge ideas: ✿ Climb a tree (make sure there’s an adult around!) ✿ Balance along a fallen tree trunk ✿ Find three different types of flower ✿ Cross a stream without getting your feet wet ✿ Find some wild animal evidence – tracks, a fox or rabbit hole, some fur caught on a bush, or even some poo!
Take a woodland challenge Set up challenges to complete on a day out in the woods and have a competition with your family
Go for a barefoot walk Let the grass tickle your toes, splash through a stream, and stomp in some squidgy mud.
Host a teddy bears’ picnic Use a teddy cookie cutter to make some little bear-shaped sandwiches. Cut out some pictures of bears and hide them in the surrounding area for kids to find (remember to take them home with you when you leave).
There’s over 7,000 nerve endings in each foot, so walking barefoot is a great way to get in touch with nature. Just make sure you avoid anything sharp on the ground.
Some parks and attractions have special barefoot trails, so search online for one near you, or you could create your own in the back garden.

Create a Fairy Garden Use your imagination to design a fantastic fairy garden! You can do this indoors if it’s raining. You will need: ✿ A container, such as a plastic box or old washing up bowl ✿ Earth ✿ A collection of natural materials: small stones or pebbles, sticks, moss, leaves, and perhaps some small flowering plants. Fill your container with earth (if you’re using living plants, put some stones in the bottom for drainage). Use some leafy twigs to make trees. Build a fence or little seat with sticks. You could even make a pond by sinking a plastic cup or another small container into the earth and filling it with water. You’re bound to think of lots more ideas once you get started…

TIDDLY & FAMILY PROMS
Can classical music benefit children?
FAMILY PROM, ST DAVID’S HALL
As the magical Tiddly & Family Proms return to St David’s Hall this summer, we round up the many wonderful benefits of introducing children—and adults too—to the genre... Improved maths
Learning an instrument improves performance in maths, science and other subjects with overlapping ‘pattern’ skills, like languages.
The idea that classical music benefits young people isn’t new. A 1993 study claimed that sonatas temporarily enhance students’ brain power. The so-called ‘Mozart Effect’ saw mums-to-be play Bach to their bumps in hope of birthing little geniuses. But is there science behind the claims? Absolutely, says The Institute of Education, following its investigation into a scheme introducing London schoolchildren to famous composers. Some outcomes are to be expected: children educated in Beethoven develop greater musical knowledge. Others are more intriguing.
Kids are all ears
Teachers taking part in the study reported children with enhanced concentration, self-discipline, social interaction, listening, language and communication skills. Professor Hallam, leading the study, observed that children taking part were positive and ‘open-eared’, without any developed prejudice. ‘Opportunities to listen extensively to classical music in the early years of primary school are therefore likely to lead to children appreciating a wider range of music than might otherwise be,’ she added.
Brahms: the ultimate brain food? A peek inside the brain reveals that the neurons lighting up when we listen to classical music are the same ones we use for working out puzzles, explaining the mental boost we get after listening. The boost is magnified in kids who transition from listening to playing instruments. Children who take piano lessons

for just six months improve problem-solving skills by 30%. Early exposure to classical music is key to breeding mini Mozarts. Sheku Kanneh-Mason, the 20-year-old cellist who played at Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle, says it was experiencing live music that motivated him to pick up the bow. Sheku will perform at St David’s Hall in June 2020. Tickets on sale 25 June 2019. Happily, tiny fiddlers needn’t demonstrate Amadeus-like qualities to benefit from practice. A University of St Andrews investigation found adults with even moderate training were more mentally agile, concluding: ‘Musical activity could be used to slow, stop or even reverse age or illness-related decline in mental function.’
Sunday 21 July, 3pm, with pre-concert activities from 1.30pm, including face-painting, photo ops and instrument demonstrations. The perfect introduction to classical music for young people, the Family Prom is back to kick off the summer holidays. Suitable for all ages, this year’s theme celebrates the wonders of weather, with Cardiff Philharmonic Orchestra forecast to be on cloud nine as they take the stage by storm, presented by BBC Wales weather duo Derek Brockway and Behnaz Akhgar. This captivating concert opens with the iconic sunrise and music from 2001: A Space Odyssey. The temperature plummets for a selection from Disney’s beloved Frozen. But the clouds are never far away as Johann Strauss’ cacophonous Thunder & Lightning Polka descends. Standard price £12.50; under 16s £7.50; under 5s free. Performance time 1 hour. Play Debussy to the fussy baby
One study provides music to the ears of sleepdeprived parents, concluding that classical compositions stimulate the brain’s alpha waves, creating a feeling of calm in infants. Numerous others conclude that classical music can lower blood pressure, helping reduce anxiety and depression at all ages.
Chords that bind
Could listening to classical music improve family relationships? A study in The Journal of Family Communication reveals that youngsters who share musical experiences with mum and dad during childhood and particularly adolescence—everything from singing together in the car to an afternoon at the Prom—report having better relationships with parents as they enter adulthood.
Every day from 20-27 July, 10.30am, (no show 21 July). Performances last 55 minutes. A gorgeous experience for infants and their grown-ups, Bert’s Magical Musical Kitchen is an interactive musical extravaganza for under 5s. Entertaining and educational, this is the perfect way to nurture your tot’s love of music and instruments. Adults and children £7.50; under 1s free. BOOKS
Join the Space Chase with the 2019 Summer Reading Challenge! The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to read six library books during the summer holiday. Children’s reading can decline during the school break if they don’t have regular access to books or encouragement to read for pleasure. This year the challenge will focus on the theme ‘Space Chase’
- an out-of-this-world adventure inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. Children are challenged to read at least six library books over the
school holidays and collect rewards, such as stickers, on their way to receiving their challenge certificate and medal.
The Challenge will launch in Cardiff libraries on Saturday 13 July. For competitions, book recommendations and special online badges and rewards, visit www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk

MY FAMILY LIFE
Rob Biddulph The best-selling author’s picture books are adored by children all over the world. He has been chosen as the official World Book Day illustrator for 2019/20.
What did you do before you became an author/illustrator and what made you choose the wonderful world of children’s books? I was a magazine art director. I worked for lots of famous titles including Just Seventeen, the NME and The Observer. I only left The Observer three years ago to become a full-time author and illustrator. I initially decided to try and get published when I started buying lots of picture books to read to my daughters. We would read them every night and I’d think, ‘Ooh, this looks like a nice thing to do. I’m going to have a go!’ I didn’t realise quite how difficult and competitive the world of children’s publishing is, however, and it took me about four years to get my first book deal. Congratulations on being chosen as the Official World Book Day illustrator. What has that involved? I had to come up with the look and feel for the entire campaign. We wanted it to be character based so I came up with lots of little bookmark people. I thought it would be good to have hundreds of different ones, dressed up in all kinds of outfits (a bit like the sausage dogs in my book Odd Dog Out) because then, hopefully, every child would have at least one character that they could relate to. Then it was a question of producing the artwork, promoting the big day and then finally going on the WBD Tour. I’ve also had to go on telly a few times (I even went on Blue Peter and got a badge!), visit 10 Downing Street, and present an award at the British Book Awards. Also, I’m off to the Houses of Parliament in a few weeks to make a speech. All very exciting 14 Families Cardiff & Vale May/June 2019
What’s your favourite way to spend time with your family? We’ve just got a puppy. He’s a ten week-old cocker spaniel called Ringo. He’s so great! I’m really looking forward to when we can all take him out for walks (he’s still got to have a couple of his jabs before we can do that). I think that will be great way of spending some quality time together. Apart from that, I still read bedtime stories to the girls. It’s a truly magical thing to do. That one-on-one time is so precious. I hope it never stops!
stuff. I really love being involved with WBD – it’s such a great charity and I’m really passionate about encouraging children to read for pleasure, which is what the whole WBD movement is all about. What’s your favourite childhood book? I loved anything and everything by Richard Scarry. I would spend hours marvelling at the detail. It was great because even on
the tenth reading of one of his books I’d still spot something I hadn’t noticed before. I try to include lots of layers of detail in my own books as a direct result. We’re looking forward to reading your new book, Show and Tell, next month. Have your children ever taken you into school for ‘Show and Tell’? Ha. No, I’d be far too embarrassing! I have visited their school quite a few times to read my stories and do some drawing, however. I usually try out my live show there before I take it on the road. If I can survive my own daughters’ criticisms I can survive anything!
Do you have an amusing habit that your children use and you hope they never grow out of? The two youngest girls had trouble with the word “caterpillar” when they were very young. They would say ‘CALERPITTAR’. It was so cute that we didn’t ever correct them. To this day they still occasionally say it. Probably not great parenting practice, but still… very sweet! Interview: Rachel Bailey
Show and Tell is available in hardback from 8 August 2019 priced £12.99. To win a copy see our competition on page 13. Find out more about Rob Biddulph’s books at www.robbiddulph.com.
