A perfect day out at Highcliffe Castle
Visit marvellous Monkey World!
Exploring Highcliffe Castle this summer gives a fascinating insight into the history of this grand 19th century cliff top mansion, documenting its rescue from ruin.
Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre in Dorset is Europe’s official crèche for orphaned orangutan infants and home to over two hundred and sixty primates, including over fifty chimpanzees.
Along the way, kids can design their own stained-glass window, unscramble magnetic puzzles and dress up. Craft activities will focus on creating characters from story books and super sleuths can follow a castle trail, spotting story book favourites. Become part of Highcliffe Castle’s story yourself, - leave your name, draw or write on its story wall. Bring a picnic for outdoor theatre on the lawns, against the castle’s magnificent backdrop. Awful Auntie (14 August), by loved children’s writer, David Walliams (age 7+) is followed by Quantum Theatre’s brilliant take on The Tale of Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny (28 August) – for ages 1-100! Many of the park’s residents have been neglected or experienced unbelievable cruelty. Now these animals enjoy the company of their own kind in a safe and natural environment. Combining fun with conservation and animal education, selfguided audio tours explain the fascinating mysteries of man’s closest living relative. After spotting the stars of TV’s Monkey Life the kids can ‘monkey around’ in the south’s largest Great Ape Play Area. Help Monkey World’s rescue efforts by adopting a monkey or ape and receive a year’s pass to the park and other goodies. Book HERE to save up to 10%.

CAMPS AND CLASSES
Devise a production this summer!
Join Stage Door Dance & Drama!
This summer, at The International British Theatre School, children in Dorset will be supervised by professional British actors working in the performance industry to devise and make professional productions for their parents, complete with lights, sound and costumes.
At Stage Door School of Dance & Drama, Bournemouth, Maureen and Julie believe it’s vital that young children start dancing in the right way. That’s why their teachers are DBS checked, insured and fully qualified and Maureen and Julie are both ISTD Examiners.
Children enjoy sports, games, confidence-building performance classes, improve their public speaking skills and learn how to begin a performance career in the UK theatre and film industry. Improving their social skills and performance abilities, camps take place in Sherborne from 18 to 22 and 25 to 29 July and are for children ages 5 to 13, in ageappropriate groups. With their consent, shows are filmed for parents to treasure or to include in their child’s first showreel to send to industry professionals.
The school has been training and nurturing children for over fifty years, inspiring some to follow performing and teaching careers and always developing a love of the arts while promoting confidence in all children. This Christmas, Stage Door will once again supply the juvenile chorus for the pantomime at the Pavilion Theatre. Classes are for children ages 3+ in a variety of dance styles, including ballet, tap, modern, jazz, Spanish and musical theatre. Find out more and book your first class HERE!

Top tips for buying a car seat* Avoid second hand car seats -. you can’t be sure of their history. Research and prioritise safety. All seats must pass minimum standards of safety. Some manufacturers test way beyond these standards Get independent advice from Child Seat Safety or from BCP Council Road Safety Team by emailing HERE who have IOSH accreditation or can direct you to someone experienced. Ask for the car seat expert in store to serve you and ask about their qualifications. If they are IOSH approved in Child Seat Safety Awareness they should be able to provide an accreditation number. If they aren’t available, request an appointment. Where possible, make sure your IOSH expert shows you how to fit the car seat. This avoids confusion and should give you confidence to fit the seat correctly. If you’ve already bought, visit a car seat fitting clinic in Poole, Bournemouth and Christchurch, to get your car seat checked. *Reference link

SCREEN FREE
No-screen kids’ summer projects
Desperate for ideas to get your kids away from screens and exploring something in the real world? Check out our top recommendations.
Garage sales
Toy purge
A great way to declutter, reuse unwanted household items and make some money. Help the kids choose a date, decide what to sell, organise the items for easy browsing and label and price everything. You can then get them drawing posters to advertise the event. You can help by posting on social media. TIPS
Disposing of old toys can be challenging but is worthwhile for children and parents alike. If your child is resistant to parting with old favourites, challenge them to play with them for an appropriate amount of time or donate them to charity. Involve your child in taking their toys to the local charity shop. TIPS
Put on a show
Retro games day
Challenge your kids to put on a mini-play or concert or re-enact a favourite book or movie scene. You may have a budding standup comic, magician or storyteller in the family! An old sheet can be a backdrop or curtain; reading lamps can be spotlights. Get them making tickets and setting up seating. TIPS
Make a list of your favourite games from your own childhood such as hopscotch, marbles, elastics, Grandmother’s Footsteps, long rope skipping, Oranges and Lemons and spend a fun filled day reminiscing with your kids. For extra nostalgia, provide some of your favourite childhood snacks and sweets. TIPS

Water wars
Make a movie
When temperatures rise and tempers start to fray, encourage the kids to have an old-fashioned water fight. Use buckets, sponges, watering cans or fill up some balloons (purchase refillable water balloons). You could invest in fancy water pistols or a novelty sprinkler, water play mat or water slide. TIPS
If you are prepared to lend your phone for filming, this is a great creative holiday project for older children. A short film is ideally three to five minutes long and it can be factual or story based.
Neighbourhood Scavenger Hunt
Family Mini-Olympic Games
Create a list of landmarks for the kids to find in your street or the local park eg a distinctive house or a large tree. Write clues that help them find these landmarks.
This gets the kids active and requires little equipment. They can make a torch and have an opening ceremony. Races can include a sack race with pillowcases, a tug of war with a dressing gown belt, discus with a frisbee, shot put using bean bags or tennis balls. TIPS
Go along with them or clearly outline the area of the hunt so they don’t wander too far. TIPS 24 July/August
Advise your child to keep it simple and start with a plan or better still a script. TIPS
