Editor’s Letter Dear readers

OK For Shared Parental Leave

Summer holidays are here again! So in this issue we are looking at some fun activities, events and ideas that can entertain the children while they are away from school. If you have not taken the kids to the Big Smoke before then a visit to London to see the sights is a great idea – as we find out on page 6.

New rules making it possible for two parents to share leave and statutory pay on the birth or adoption of a child came into force in April .

Now, neither Herefordshire nor Worcestershire are coastal counties, but we are lucky enough to have some lovely beaches not so far away and that means a day trip to the seaside can be a part of your family’s summer plans – see our pick of the beaches on page 8.

Shared parental leave is open to parents whose child was born or adopted on or after 5 April 2015. Parents must give employers eight weeks' notice of their planned pattern of parental leave.

The new arrangements replace Britain's old unequal maternity leave and statutory maternity pay arrangements which gave mothers up to a year off work and much less for dads. Parents can now split up to 52 weeks of shared parental leave between them as well as up to 39 weeks of statutory shared parental pay under new legislation.

If you want to stay closer to home there are many local attractions, events, clubs and activities across our lovely region that are featured throughout this issue and especially in our What’s On Section. In our next issue the focus will be firmly on “Back to School”. Until then, enjoy the summer!

News & Views Help Uncover Brockhampton’s Ancient Past

Protect Our Footpaths

If you and the kids have ever harboured a desire to find your inner Indiana Jones then here is an opportunity to get involved in some real hands-on archaeology at the Brockhampton estate over the summer holidays. The Summer of Archaeology event at Brockhampton, Herefordshire will explore the early history of the estate, hoping to discover how the medieval moated site came to be located in the valley at Lower Brockhampton.

Families in our region are being encouraged to step out for a stroll during the summer and help protect favourite walks as part of the Ramblers’ Big Pathwatch. From 13 July families will be able to share experiences and download the Big Pathwatch app from www.Ramblers.org.uk/bigpathwatch.

This archaeological project will also explore the origins of the Old Chapel at Brockhampton and will try to discover if there is a deserted medieval village lying under the orchards to the north of the property.

Support Breastfeeding In August

There will be lots of drop-in volunteering opportunities for families to join in with the archaeologists

The organisers say many women still struggle with breastfeeding in the workplace despite significant progress over the 22 years that the campaign has been running. This year, the organisers hope to gain support from all sectors to enable women everywhere to work and breastfeed. Find out more at www.worldbreastfeedingweek.org

http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/ brockhampton-estate/

July - August 2015

The time has come again for World Breastfeeding Week, with 2015’s theme concentrating on working mothers and breastfeeding. World Breastfeeding Week will take place between 1-7 August and aims to help women to combine work with childrearing, particularly breastfeeding, in a productive manner.

New Book Aims To Empower Parents Of Autistic Children Parents and carers of children with autism may be interested in a book published in August written by two leading experts in the field. Understanding Autism, billed as an essential reference, explores everything from the causes of autism to how it manifests at the various ages and stages of a child’s life. Professor Rita Jordan,

Emeritus Professor in Autism Studies, University of Birmingham, described the work as an “excellent short guide to autism, aimed at parents and professionals who need a clear, informed, unbiased account to counterbalance the confusing plethora of information, and misinformation, with which parents are now confronted”.

Take The Children To London This Summer! A family trip to see the sights of London is a great idea to plan in for the summer holidays.

Two-thirds of British families have not visited London, according to research, and our own soundings suggest that this is the case in Herefordshire and Worcestershire too. So if your children have never visited the Big Smoke then this summer may be the perfect time to do it. Educational A visit to the capital city is fun, exciting and educational; and your children will always remember their first trip to this vast metropolis. Expect them to be wowed by the sheer scale of the place!

Research conducted on behalf of London's Royal Garden hotel shows that eight out of the top ten experiences in Greenwich Park: great for children and loads to do London that parents think will enrich their children are either free or cost very little. The researchers although you may find that you have to travel in to the centre claim that visiting all 10 attractions would cost a family of four on the tube or the train to see the sights. You could even under £200 in total - although, clearly, you will need to factor in consider camping in London at one of the capital’s five additional costs for accommodation, travel and food.. permanent campsites within the M25. Remember, parking is a Of course, you could do a day-trip on the train and see one or nightmare (and expensive!): so best avoid driving in to the two of the sights but in our experience that is ambitious and centre of London. The ideal solution is to ask a relative or a tiring and it is probably a good idea to spend a few days in the good friend who lives in or around London to put you and the city. There are cheapish hotels where you and the kids can stay family up for a night or two.

London Here are our top tips on things to do and see:

See the dinosaurs! As well as the permanent (and permanently fascinating!) dinosaur exhibition, the Natural History Museum boasts a collection of the biggest, tallest and rarest animals in the world. See a life-sized blue whale, a 40-million-year-old spider, and the beautiful Central Hall. Free to enter but some exhibitions require tickets. Do some science! From the future of space travel to asking that difficult question: "who am I?", the Science Museum makes your brain perform Olympic-standard mental gymnastics. See, touch and experience the major scientific advances of the last 300 years; and don't forget the awesome Imax cinema. Free to enter but some exhibits require tickets. Visit the Tower. Take a tour with one of the Yeoman Warders around the Tower of London, one of the world's most famous buildings. Discover its 900-year history as a royal palace, prison and place of execution, arsenal, jewel house and zoo! Gaze up at the White Tower, tiptoe through a medieval king's bedchamber and gaze at the Crown Jewels. Travel the tube. You may think public mass transport is a bit of a yawn but if your kids have never experienced the Underground then this is a must-do. Our advice: avoid rush hour if you don't like being squashed! Free for 10 year olds and younger but investigate adult ticket options before you go - especially travel cards and Oyster cards. Check: https:// www.tfl.gov.uk/fares-and-payments/ticket-types See the penguins at London Zoo. Set in leafy Regent's Park, London Zoo is an oasis in the heart of the capital. Visitors can enjoy Gorilla Kingdom, where you can come face to face with the majestic Western Lowland Gorillas and Rainforest Life. Most kids want to see Penguin Beach and watch the penguins dive, swim, frolic and feed. Buy a toy in Hamleys. Okay, so it’s a toy shop. But it is a famous toy shop, it is a big toy shop and there is usually plenty going on during the holidays. It is free to enter but count yourself lucky if you escape without buying anything!

Rhossili Bay: Voted Britain’s Best Beach

Oh I Do Want To Be Beside The Seaside... We may be short of beaches in Herefordshire and Worcestershire but being land-locked is no excuse to miss out on a family visit to the seaside this summer.

Where you go may be partly determined by where you live. Those based in the north of our region or who are closer to the M5 may opt to zoom down to Weston-super-Mare or even further afield; while those in Herefordshire may take the A40, pick up the M4 and head to the beaches of south Wales. Your choice may also depend on whether you are thinking about a day trip or planning a few nights away – perhaps under canvas or with a caravan. Some may fancy taking the opportunity to head down to the lovely Cornish coast for a few days but for our money, wherever you live in our two counties and whatever seaside activities you and your family enjoy, the beaches of the Gower Peninsula are difficult to beat. Gower Peninsula The Gower is a beautiful area adjacent to Swansea and easily reached by the M4. It’s hard to talk about Gower without mentioning Rhossilli Bay. It’s been referred to as “the

8

Hereford & Worcester

www.familiesherefordandworcs.co.uk

supermodel of British Beaches” and has won accolades such as “Britain’s Best Beach”, and the “UK’s Best Picnic Spot”. It’s a haven for wildlife too with many different breeds of bird nesting in the cliffs – so don’t forget your binoculars. (See: http://www. visitswanseabay.com/destinations/gower-peninsula/) If your older off-spring are looking to catch some waves, head to Langland Bay and Caswell Bay on the south of the Gower or Llangennith on the west of the Gower, to watch them hop onto their surfboards! There are some good camp sites in the Gower although we would recommend booking at busy times – and especially over weekends. Oxwich Bay and Horton along the southern coast of the Gower are favourites for families with younger children and not far from Swansea; they are spacious and safe with plenty of sand to exercise the creativity of little sand sculptors. Mumbles Head is closer to Swansea, and there you’ll find the rocky retreat of Limeslade Bay and Bracelet Bay, a small, sheltered cove that's easy to get to, where the kids can enjoy rock-pooling. For a more remote experience head to Three Cliffs Bay, where

July - August 2015

Seaside Some Picnic Ideas If you fancy a something a little different from the boring triangular sarnies and crisps to go into your summer picnics then here are a few ideas: Pizza: Cook or make some pizzas, slice them up and and wrap them in foil. Mini sandwich assortment: Use pastry shapes to cut up bread into different shapes with assorted fillings. Melon chunks on a straw: Four or five cubes or balls of melon pierced by a straw; using different melon types adds colour; make just before you leave, wrap them in cling film and pack them in a rigid container. Three Cliffs Bay: perfect day out

Pasta: Cook up some pasta with pesto and allow to cool. Mix in some olives, peppers, ham or whatever the children like and pack in a sealed plastic container.

you can see the signature limestone cliffs. There’s also a forest and a castle waiting to be explored nearby.

Finger fun: Drain a small jar of olives, grab a punnet of grapes and stash some strawberries in the hamper.

Amble from Rhossili to Mewslade Bay if you enjoy sloping sea cliffs and breath-taking views. Some of the hidden Gower jewels include Pwll Du, one for the more adventurous as it sits at the bottom of a valley with access limited to just three footpaths – probably not a good idea with small children! Brandy Cove is similarly secluded with exceptionally stunning scenery.

Fruit juice punch: Freeze some orange slices, apple slices and berries. Wrap in silver foil and pack in a sealed container. Add to fruit juice for flavour and a chill.

Tenby Further along the Welsh coast is the lovely town of Tenby which is too far for a day trip for most of us but a great place to stay for a few days. Situated within the UK’s only coastal national park, there is plenty of choice if a barefooted stroll on the sand or a bracing salt-water dip is on your agenda. The beaches have Blue Flag status for cleanliness and water quality. Named Best Beach in Europe 2014, Tenby's Harbour beach is home to the iconic St Julian’s chapel, Harbour Cafe and Tenby Sailing Club, which welcomes members and non-members alike. The beach is a must for those of us who haven’t truly arrived at the seaside until we’ve heard that evocative clinking of boat rigging in the breeze and the gentle splash of waves against a hull. (See: http:// www.visittenby.co.uk/)

Salad in a cup: Stack lettuce, sliced tomato, corn, diced peppers and tuna, chicken or ham in a cup or glass, seal with cling film and pack upright. Pastries for small hands: Need to be made ahead of time, but stuff them with yummy fillings and they make a great picnic food that is easy to handle.

Weston-super-Mare But do not ignore the coast on the other side of the Severn Estuary and just an hour or two down the M5 from Worcestershire. Portishead has an interesting beach, located within the Severn Estuary that offers sand and rocks backed by grass. Then there is the long beach running south west from Clevedon which is an old Victorian seaside resort at the mouth of the river Severn that features a long pier. Also, take a look at Sand Bay, a sand and shingle beach with a salt marsh and adjacent to the National Trust headland at Sand Point. However, if you are intent on heading down the M5 rather than into Wales for a day at the seaside with the children then it has to be Weston-super-Mare: an established seaside resort with everything you will need to keep the kids occupied regardless of whether the tide is in or out. Older children may enjoy the Grand Pier amusements while younger ones can ride on the donkeys and eat ice creams. So, whether its Wales or the West Country, there are a number of exciting options for day trips. Send us your seaside snaps and beach reviews to share on Twitter and on our Facebook page! Thanks to Visit Tenby the City & County of Swansea for materials used in preparing this report. July - August 2015

Rain, Rain Don’t Go Away One thing you can count on this summer is that there will be rain. When the heavens do open, you’ll need some ideas to keep your little ones occupied. Sarah Butters offers her favourite ways to fill a wet summer day. Get Board! Whether you’re a Jedi at Jenga or a master Monopoly player, there’s nothing like a giant board games tournament. No one in the Butters household will ever forget the day a game of Battleships descended into an actual World War. And if I’m honest, I’ve never quite got over being beaten by my children at Scrabble after they came up with ‘zumba’ on a triple word score. However this is a chance to encourage your family to forget the iPads and X Boxes of today and remember the fun you can have with three dimensional people. Go to Wise Owl Toys in Worcester for interesting and educational toys, games and puzzles. Shortlisted in top 20 Best Small shops award 2015. From the best selling game “Dobble” (for ALL ages), new Magformers (really different magnetic construction with lots of added play value, age 3-10) to traditional wooden Bigjigs Railway, Playmobil, Schleich and Orchard Toys set of games and puzzles, as well as science kits, Wise Owl Toys have all you want to keep your children busy! schools offer intense holiday courses for children looking to master this life saving skill and you can support them with a rainy day trip to your local pool. Make swimming fun. Keep Learning Alive Six weeks is a long time to be out of the classroom. Make a note of the days your local after school support centre is running holiday sessions. For example, Explore Learning is open daily over the school holidays and offers a range of learning opportunities for children from 4 years old. This may give your child a head start when September comes. Create A Rainy Day Jar Has your child ever asked to do some or thing that you’ve not had the time for? Maybe it’s baking biscuits or building some Lego they’ve had since their birthday. Whenever time is against you, get your child to write the idea on a piece of paper and pop it in the Rainy Day Jar. It means you can reach into it for ideas as soon as you hear the words ‘’It’s raining!”

Take A Dip

Head Indoors

If the summer showers won’t allow you to get dry, grab your swimsuit and head to your local leisure centre. News that half of primary school children can’t swim the length of a pool should be a wake up call for all parents. Many local swim

Your local museum is rain proof and packed with family activities to keep you all occupied. The summer holiday is a time for the attractions on your doorstep to put out the welcome mat for families. Take a look at our What’s On guide for ideas.
