In this issue:
Hello! Welcome to the summer issue of Families Herts magazine. The summer months of July and August are always a busy time for families as we try to fill the days with as many activities, play dates, and days out as we possibly can to keep our children occupied over the six-week break from school, whilst also juggling other work–life commitments. So Families Herts has given you a helping hand with your summer timetabling demands by providing a jam-packed What’s On of activities, events, holiday camps, classes, water parks, fairs and family photoshoots! Do also make sure you read the adverts placed throughout the magazine too, from Families Herts clients promoting a wide range of fantastic events. Summer is festival season and in our feature on pages 8-9 we’ve highlighted a number of the best family-friendly weekenders around, and details of the many performers who’ll be appearing. And we’ve got some hot tickets to give away in our competition for the Classic Ibiza concert at Hatfield House too, more on this on page 5. Keeping busy keeps your child’s brain active during the ‘down months’ of summer, where it has been found that children lose a third of what they’ve learned in the academic year. Have a look at our Parenting feature Summer activities to avoid brain-drain (page 12) for ideas on how to have fun, and keep those brain neurons in tip-top condition at the same time. Whether you’re going abroad on holiday, choosing a ‘staycation’ to English shores, or keeping it simple and sticking to day trips (which is just as much fun!), have a wonderful break. Enjoy your summer!

News & Views Business park hosts first volunteer fair Breakspear Park in Hemel Hempstead has held its first volunteer fair to help raise awareness of local good causes among the business park’s 1,000+ members of staff. The event was a great opportunity for charities to showcase the outstanding work they do, and potentially recruit more volunteers and raise money. Representatives from Hope for Children, Druglink Ltd, Willow Foundation, Keech Hospice Care, Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust and CLIC Sargent were all present at the one-day event. Dina Mistry, Marketing Manager for Breakspear Park, said: ‘We like to host events that our staff can attend within work time. Three of the companies housed here offer staff volunteering days so it was a great opportunity for them – and all other employees – to discover new charitable activities they can get involved in. ‘The charities had many people sign up on the day for a variety of activities and events.’ Breakspear Park also recently raised more than £1,500 with a cake and raffle day (pictured) with monies donated to children’s charity WellChild.
Space Chase Reading Challenge T he Summer Reading Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to read six library books during the long summer holiday. Children's reading can decline during the summer holidays if they don’t have regular access to books or encouragement to read for pleasure. This year the challenge will focus on the theme ‘Space Chase’ – an out-of-this-world adventure inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. Children are challenged to read at least six library books over the school holidays and collect rewards, such as stickers, on their way to receiving their challenge certificate and medal. There’s also the chance to win a VIP pass to the Mission Control event with children’s author Steve Cole. The Challenge will launch in libraries on Saturday 13 July 2019. Head down to the St Albans Library launch event and the Mobile Planetarium at Bishops Stortford Library (ticketed) to get started – for details and to ensure you don’t miss out, visit www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/libraries or call 0300 123 4049. Concerts supporting charities Disadvantaged children from across the county are set to benefit from a partnership between Classic Ibiza, Heart Four Counties and its charity, GMSN. The Classic Ibiza concert takes place in August at Hatfield House, and with the support of Heart Four Counties radio aims to help raise £20,000 for small charities and projects which support disadvantaged children and young people living with illness, disability or lack of opportunity. There will be various fund-raising activities including a donation of £1 from every programme sold at the concert (and three other concerts across the country), face painting and from a number of collection points placed at key locations on the grounds. ‘The money raised by concert goers for Global’s Make Some Noise will support many charities. Small charities like Learning Through Horses, which helps vulnerable young people in Hertfordshire and elsewhere who have been excluded or are at risk of exclusion from school, to develop vital life skills through working with horses,’ says Emma Bradley, Managing Director of GMSN. The partnership will enable the charity to expand its coverage within Hertfordshire over the coming 12 months, particularly in schools.

News & Views Parenting Programme introduces new project An Inclusion Advocacy Service linked to the Hertfordshire Practical Parenting Programme (HPPP) has been set up in St Albans. The project uses HPPP’s highly skilled family support workers to provide advice, information and guidance to families across Hertfordshire, and is based around the Advocacy Charter (2002) principles. The aims are to support parents and carers of children age 12+ with accessing services, engaging with the local community, and ensuring vulnerable clients also have equal access. Marianne Burrows, HPPP Advocacy Coordinator, comments: ‘Advocates will work with clients to ensure their voice is heard. They will ensure relevant advice, support and referrals are put in place. ‘The service hopes to have its own support groups whereby clients can chat, hear speakers and participate in activities – all of which will be designed around building the confidence and self-esteem of the client group and improving mental wellbeing,’ she adds. The service has volunteer advocates who support clients at an early stage. They help identify needs, provide information and support clients in making contact with other organizations. Advocates will work with clients to ensure their voice is heard. For more information call 01992 638000 or visit www.hertfordshireppp.co.uk.

Tasty peanut and almond butter Food artisans Yumello have introduced two new nut butters, inspired by the Cuisine of North Africa. Shoppers can now enjoy Smooth Salted Date Almond Butter and Salted Date Crunchy Peanut Butter, as well as the already popular Wild Atlas Almond Butter and Wild Atlas Peanut Butter flavours. Unlike many nut butter producers who use palm oil, Yumello’s use of argan oil is central to the product, tastes great, and has many health benefits. News & Views Elsewhere on the park children can try their hand at archery, wall climbing, junior segway, bungee trampolines and crazy golf. Nature and the great outdoors is right on the doorstop of this holiday park and the Nature Rockz activities make the most of the natural environment with activities that include a treasure hunt, bug hunt, pebble art and den building, and led by knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff. If you’re a parent looking for something a bit more self-indulgent and relaxing during your stay then there’s the option of visiting the well-equipped onsite spa. There are live shows and discos every evening and a variety of food on offer too. I’m saving the best for last though, as Rockley Park is blessed with a yellow-sanded beach just a short walk from the main complex. It’s relatively small, but has more than enough space for building sandcastles and splashing in the sea – and on hot days you can grab yourself an ice cream from the beachside café.
New initiative from Haven brings fun to fitness

If you’re thinking of taking the family on a late summer break then you can’t go far wrong with a stay at a Haven Holiday Park. Haven Holiday Parks offer so much for the family – from their modern, cosy accommodation, to sports activities and evening shows. Always keen to introduce new items to their programme of events, Haven has partnered with Les Mills, the international fitness company that specialises in children’s fitness, to bring the benefits of physical exercise and wellbeing to families who visit their parks. What makes the Les Mills BORN TO MOVE sessions so appealing is that they incorporate a range of fun, physical movement patterns such as dance and martial arts, alongside stretching and strength building, and close with a short mindfulness segment. It’s an all-round work-out. ‘Every year, we welcome 2.6million families to our parks, excited for a fun break away with their kids,’ said Simon Palmer, Head of Activities and Leisure at Haven. ‘We are confident the programme will add to the full family experience with us, enabling tots through to teens to discover the beauty of movement and physical activity in a fun and interactive way.’ The virtual classes are tailored for age groups ranging from 4 up to 16 years old and are facilitated by Haven’s Activities and Leisure team. Children can sing and dance their way through a series of simple moves that build body awareness and balance with the aid of onscreen virtual instructor. There are 37 Haven Holiday Parks around the English coast, with some of the closest venues such as Rockley Park less than 3.5 hours away from Hertfordshire.
Rockley Park Haven Rockley Park is situated on the south coast in Poole and is a great location for a family break. As soon as you arrive you’re presented with information on the many activities the Park offer – one of the first places your brood will make a beeline for is the pool and splash area. The facility is really well-designed with a large water slide at one end, and an even bigger one at the other, which spirals its way down from the top level of the building to the pool. There’s a splash zone with mini jets too that little ones and toddlers will enjoy exploring, and an outdoor pool which is open for the summer months. familiesonline.co.uk

Festivals
Top-tips for attending family festivals and concerts Claire Winter and Dale Harry
There are a host of festivals and concerts to enjoy once again this summer – here’s a guide on what you should (and shouldn’t) pack…
T
he arrival of summer often heralds the start of the festival season and it's no surprise that this should be seen as an exciting time of year. With event organisers putting even more emphasis on providing facilities and entertainment that is family friendly, festivals and concerts are a great way to spend quality, family time together during the holidays. Whether you opt for Camp Bestival, Latitude, Hertfordshire’s Classic Ibiza concert, Standon Calling or a boutique festival like Deer Shed 10, these events offer oodles of fun for the whole family. However, you never know what the great British weather or your kids (only joking) will throw at you, so how do you ensure you’re fully prepared?...
Pack layers It’s always helpful to bring shorts, t-shirts and even swimwear to a festival but you are also going to need jumpers, woolly hats and maybe even onesies. It can get very cold at night, even in the summer. Lightweight waterproof jackets are also a good option. You can carry them with you in case it rains and also use them as an extra layer if it gets cold.
Bring lots (and lots) of snacks Breadsticks, rice cakes, dried fruit, and nuts, you know the drill! Kids are always hungry and buying food on site can get expensive for a whole family. I would budget for buying some meals at the festival and doing some cooking at the campsite. Pasta with a variety of sauces is always an easy and filling option! Take some fresh fruit too, to help fill any hunger gaps.

Don’t forget the sunscreen and hats You are going to be outdoors a lot – you can get sunburnt even if it is cloudy.
Stay hydrated Make sure the kids have their own water bottle. A rucksack or a bum bag to carry their water and money in is also a good idea. Most festivals have water points where you can refill water bottles.
Don’t forget to unplug Leave expensive gadgets at home. They are hard to keep secure and the whole idea is to get your kids off their devices. We all love to document how much fun we are having – but keep some of it as memories instead of sharing it on Instagram or Facebook!
Go with the flow If you are a neat freak and like a schedule, this is the time to let it all hang out. There is no routine; your children will be filthy and running around in a onesie, wellies, and an Indian headdress. Enjoy the fun and embrace the festival vibes!
Protect your ears Music event organisers follow guidelines to ensure noise levels are managed but for very little ones and for children who may have sensitivity to louder noises it’s always worth considering taking along noise reducing earmuffs to protect their hearing. Also, consider positioning yourself at a distance from the main output source (speaker).

A symphony for your senses: Classic Ibiza Hertfordshire, 31 August This late afternoon, into the evening concert, celebrates the iconic feel-good tunes of Ibiza. Set in the picturesque grounds of Hatfield House, Classic Ibiza starts with a chill-out set where people can enjoy their picnics and a drink, or dance along as the sun fades. DJ Goldierocks will turn things up in the interval, getting the crowd into the mood, before the 32-piece Urban Soul Orchestra and vocalists return to the stage to bring their captivating energy to proceedings once again. One classic dance track will follow another, as the grounds of Hatfield House turn into a magical, alfresco celebration, with laser display. Some of the tracks added to the programme which you’ll be able to enjoy are, You Got the Love (The Source ft. Candi Staton), Giant (Calvin Harris & Rag ’n’ Bone Man), Everybody’s Free (Rozalla), Sweet Harmony (Liquid), and When Love Takes Over (David Guetta ft. Kelly Rowland). ‘These tracks and others performed throughout the evening span the various generations of dance music. There are some real classics in there, old and new,’ says Lisa Ward, Director of Revival Productions who organise Classic Ibiza. ‘One of the things that makes Classic Ibiza so great is that it appeals to those of us that were there at the beginning and those still clubbing today.’ What really sets Classic Ibiza apart is that it is a concert for all age groups. Concert goers can bring their own food and drink, or take advantage of numerous stalls selling high-quality street-food and refreshments. Car-parking is free too. Here is some more advice from Families readers: Festival convert Pernilla says: ‘Get a proper canvas tent! I love our bell tent. Even wet camping is fine in it. I was a very reluctant camper due to the whole “tent wet on the inside” thing until I was introduced to canvas.’ Cath says make sure you are easy to find. ‘The best thing we bought was a windsock flag on a telescopic pole so the kids could go off but locate our camp easily.’

The new parent money-saving survival guide By Ashleigh Swan
S
o you’ve just become a new parent? What you’ll definitely be aware of already (as well as the fact that you’re not sleeping much) is that having a baby doesn’t come cheap. What follows is my money-saving survival guide for the costly months ahead.
If you don’t need it, don’t buy it About three months before my first daughter was born, I turned into this uber-excited parent who felt the need to go to every shop and buy every baby gadget known to man. I mean let’s face it, we need it all don’t we? Well actually, we don’t. It’s very likely that if this is your first baby, you may think you need things that you will rarely or never use. Things like a baby bath thermometer, baby food maker and bottle warmer, costly items which you can definitely do without. It’s understandable that you want all the right things for your baby’s arrival but instead of wasting your money on unnecessary gadgets, have a chat with friends who already have kids to get an idea about what items are really needed and what items are just a novelty.
Buy big Cute new born clothes are lovely but your little bundle of joy will grow out of them in just a few weeks. Do you really need a new outfit a day? When buying clothes for your new baby, instead of getting clothes that will fit them now, buy one size up. In this way, the clothes you buy will
last much longer. Once your baby has outgrown them, sell them on online straightaway to recoup some of your costs and to spend on the next size up. My top three places for buying cheap kids clothing are Very, Asda George and Sports Direct.
Don’t overpay for nappies In the run up to the birth, one of the things parents forget to stock up on are nappies. It’s not a huge problem as you can buy nappies in most supermarkets and online. The thing is, it’s okay just popping to the shop when you’re running low but I can assure you that you’ll be paying over the odds. You can look out for special offers or even buy in bulk but the best way to save is to use a comparison tool like Store Scanner available at www.ashleighmoneysaver.co.uk
Join baby clubs Try to snap up anything you can get for free with both hands. That’s where baby clubs come in. There are currently a loads of baby clubs in the UK you can sign up to (completely free) and once they have your details, you will be sent a number of freebies which include sample products, useful magazines and money-off coupons for a wealth of products and brands. The baby clubs I would recommend joining are Boots Parenting Club, Cow & Gate Baby Club and Babies R Us Mother and Baby Club.
Your benefit entitlement You might be inclined to think that financial help to raise a child is a thing of the past. This is incorrect. Although the government have made numerous cuts to a range of benefits, there is still help and you should definitely check to see what you are entitled to. www.entitledto.co.uk runs through your circumstances and will work out what benefits you can claim. If you (jointly with a partner) earn under £50,000 you can claim Child Benefit. If you’re pregnant or have had a baby in the last 12 months, you can get free prescriptions and NHS dental treatment and, depending on your income, you may also be entitled to Child Tax Credits, Healthy Start, Sure Start Maternity Grant and others. Ashleigh Swan started Ashleigh Money Saver in 2013 to deliver the best money saving advice, tips and voucher codes to women in the UK. For more information, visit www.ashleighmoneysaver.co.uk

Why are parents turning to tutoring? Claire Winter
A
round a quarter of children in the UK are being tutored. Claire Winter looks at why one in four families are seeking extra help outside of the classroom. Parents often get extra tuition for their children to prepare them for important entrance exams or the 11+. They also get them to help boost their child’s skills in a subject in which they aren’t doing well or to help them excel in a subject, so they can impress the schools to which they are applying. Modern technology means kids can be tutored virtually via Skype or Zoom and its big business. It’s estimated that we spend £2 billion a year on private tutoring, which makes us one of the top spenders on tuition in the world. Many parents believe that tutoring can be an amazing resource that gives children extra confidence, reassurance and skills to stop them feeling overwhelmed by the pressures of schoolwork – the benefits are clear to see. CEO and founder of the charity, Action Tutoring, Susannah Hardyman, highlights the importance of tutoring. ‘We know tutoring works to improve grades and this impact is not limited to young people from high-income backgrounds either. In the UK today nearly a third of all pupils are classified as disadvantaged and less than half of this group, 48%, will meet national standards in their SATs at Year 6, compared to 67% of their more privileged peers. On joining secondary school, it's much harder for these pupils to catch up and by the end of Year 11, they are, on average, 12 months behind. ‘As more and more young people access private tutors, the gap in attainment between disadvantaged young people and their peers will
familiesonline.co.uk
grow. Our charity uses the power of volunteer tutors to bridge the gap and ensure tutoring support can be accessed by every pupil who needs it, not just those who can afford it.’ But others argue that extra tutoring creates more pressure on children. Ex-teacher Victoria Kennedy, who is now a confidence and image coach (www.thefairyclothesmother.com) takes the view that tutoring needs careful management to ensure it doesn’t have a negative impact on a child. She says: ‘When I worked as a teacher in Hampshire and London, I found that children with extra pressure and expectations from parents struggled with failure, needed more encouragement and guidance to complete tasks and often suffered from a sense of overwhelm.’ The option for parents to have access to tutoring for their child, whatever the economic status or preference, should be explored at Government level . My children attend a secondary school where gaps in knowledge are quickly identified, and pupils are asked to attend booster sessions before and after school so that they can catch up. Not all schools can offer this and long term, it is a situation that needs to be addressed.

Parenting Read for pleasure Remind them about the wonder of books. Being told what to read at school can make it less enjoyable, so let them choose what they want to read. Oxfam has dedicated bookshops at which you can pick up teen favourites and kids books for as little as £1. You can also sign up your children for the Summer Reading challenge at the local library.
Summer activities to avoid brain-drain
Get outside Being outdoors in new environments will keep everyone happy as well as firing up brain neurons! A study by the University of Rochester has found that spending time outdoors not only makes you happier, it also leads to an increased sense of vitality. Being in nature can also calm the mind, boost creativity and improve focus and attention.
Create art Remember the holidays are supposed to be fun, so get the kids creating some fun art in the garden or kitchen. This will enhance their creativity and motor skills.
By Claire Winter
W
e all know that our children need a break during the summer, so they come back to school refreshed and ready to learn. However, research consistently shows that children can lose up to a third of what they have learned during the holidays. Here are eight great ideas to keep young brains active during the long break:
Write a summer bucket list Get the kids to write a list of things they want to do during the holidays. They can create a scrapbook or document it on a computer or tablet. Get them to research where the places are and the cost of visiting. Give them extra credit for finding free activities or keeping the trip under £20 (review the What’s On guide, pages 15-19 for ideas).
Take a class Summer holiday workshops and camps can teach your children some new skills, which will also help their brains stay active. Circus skills, kayaking, drama, dance and coding are all interesting options which your child will learn new skills in, and have fun too.
12 Families Herts
Avoid gadgets There are some great viral posts about this on social media, in which parents change the WiFi password at home and say to their kids they will only get it back if they tidy their rooms, read a book or go outside! Most kids need an Xbox or mobile phone detox, so just set some limits on screen time and let them decide when they get to use their allocation.
Travel You’ll be relieved to know that travel does broaden the mind. Being on holiday helps families use their brains differently. As a result of that parents and children feel happier and less stressed, allowing them to re-connect emotionally.
Mindset matters Teach your children resilience and the growth mindset – for example, they aren’t good at something ‘yet.’ The fixed mindset is the belief that they can’t change or develop new or different skills, and are born clever or ‘arty’. The summer is the perfect time for them to try new things or develop existing skills and understand that you can become good at something if you practice.

Clubs & Classes Better co-ordination = better grades!
Planning ahead can pay off By Andrew Campbell The summer holidays may seem long but they will soon be over. So, as well as booking activities and clubs for them over the summer, it’s not too early to start thinking about what after-school classes and clubs and weekend activities you may want to book for your child in September. This is particularly important if you have a child who wants to undertake a number of activities or classes or if you have multiple children. It’s essential to work out a schedule whereby all the activities fit together neatly and you are not left rushing from place to place with too little time to spare. Planning ahead gives you time to research all the options thoroughly, talk to providers and book into free trials and taster classes that are scheduled early in September, before the term gets into full swing. Testing out your child’s interest in a new activity by taking advantage of free trials and taster classes is definitely recommended if you want to avoid a situation

where you pay for an activity in which your child swiftly loses interest. Without prior planning, it’s easy to find yourself scrabbling around in a hurry at exactly the time when you are also preparing for your child to go back to school for start of term. There’s the chance you’ll miss out on something suitable too, as popular classes always fill up quickly. It’s also easier to get a session time that suits your family’s schedule if you are ready to book early, as well as being able to avoid travelling further to get exactly what you want. If you want to book your child into an activity with friends, there’s likely to be some co-ordination involved with their parents, so pre-planning is beneficial. Last but not least, you may find you can save money by taking advantage of ‘early bird’ booking discounts offered by many activity providers.
Young children with better eye-to-hand co-ordination are more likely to achieve higher scores for reading, writing and maths according to new research by the University of Leeds. More than 300 children ages 4 to 11 took part in various computer tasks designed to measure eye-to-hand coordination, such as steering, taking aim and tracking objects on a computer screen. The results revealed that the children who did better in the eye-to-hand co-ordination tasks tended to have higher academic attainment in reading, writing and maths. In particular, those with the best performance in the ‘steering task’ were on average 9 months ahead of classmates who struggled. This research builds on recent findings from other studies which suggested that the ability of babies aged between six and 13 months to understand the world around them had an impact on their ability to manipulate numbers when they reached the age of four. The findings raise the question of whether schools should be doing more to give support to children who are clumsy. More info at www.leeds.ac.uk
