Families News
Over half of parents feel lonely New research has found that over half (56%) of parents with children under the age of 5 years experience loneliness at least some of the time. The study by the charity, Coram Family and Childcare reveals that the issue affects significantly more women than men, with twice as many mothers than fathers saying they often feel left out, as well as younger parents, with nearly 37% of parents aged 18 to 24 often feeling a lack of companionship, compared to 21% of parents aged 25 to 34. Loneliness is most prevalent around the birth of a baby, particularly if parents are unable to get out of the house easily and when the children are older but haven’t yet started school. Focus groups conducted by Coram Family and Childcare revealed that parents felt the best way to combat loneliness and isolation is to meet other parents by participating in activities that their child will enjoy. www.familyandchildcaretrust.org

Mental Health Issues Starting Early One in eight children aged 5 to 16 have a diagnosable mental health problem and may continue to have these problems in to adulthood. For 50% of those with a lifetime mental illness, symptoms begin before the age of 14 according to statistics.
Talk, Sing and Play to Build Brains Almost two thirds of parents are unaware that back and forth interaction with their child from birth can help their babies’ social, emotional and cognitive development.
Place2Be, a national charity providing emotional support to children, advises that it's never too early or too late to start thinking about your child's mental health. Some simple actions you can take at any age to help promote positive mental health include: • C arving out time to be with your child one-to-one. Put other worries to one side and actively listen to them and their feelings. • Enjoying a quiet activity together can make it easier to talk to your child and can encourage your child to open up naturally. • Taking a step back from today's busy lives and enjoy some dedicated time listening and playing with your child. • Creative activities such as art and craft can encourage bonding with your child. • Be kind to yourself and look after your own mental health. This will have the most beneficial impact of all on the wellbeing of your child. For more information and advice, visit www.place2be.org.uk
A survey of more than 2,000 parents and expectant parents by the NSPCC found that 62% were unaware that moments playing, singing or telling stories can be brain-building ones. NSPCC research has found some parents struggle with ideas about how to interact with their young child beyond eye contact and cuddling, especially in the early months when they do not receive obvious feedback from their babies. In response, the charity is launching a campaign, ‘Look, Say, Sing, Play,’ to encourage new parents to use everyday scenarios to have more two-way interactions with their babies. Going to the shops, having a bath, going to bed – whatever you and your baby are doing can be turned into a back-and-forth. Parents can sign up to get weekly brain building tips that are fun and age appropriate.

April Showers Activities
10 & 11 April Easter Weekend
By Andrew Campbell
Don’t be put off by those inevitable April showers this year. There are plenty of activities that can done where water is a must! We put together some ideas to keep those little ones entertained and out in the fresh air. Rainbow Art Sprinkle powder paints or washable markers on white card and get your children to stand out in the rain, letting the raindrops mix and making their own modern art. Take it inside to dry before the rain washes the paint away! Buy a Worm Farm Rain awakens juicy worms from their slumber. Pull on your wellies and collect a few slimy friends to put in your indoor farm, so your children can study them up close. Puddle Splashing Make splashing puddles extra fun by creating a multi-coloured water world. Simply drop food colouring in the puddles before making the leap. Raindrop Orchestra Saucepans, empty tin cans and upturned plastic bottles can create music when drops of rain falling on them. See how creative your kids can be! Inside-out Take bath toys outside to bob around in the puddles. Water-activated robot fish toys (£9.99 Amazon) look great! Build a Dam If you have a stream close by, use stone, rocks, twigs, logs and sticks to make a dam over it. Remember to take it apart before you leave, so as not to disrupt any animal habitats. Boat Race Running water in a park stream or down a pavement is great for creating your very own boat race. Make your own boats out of things you find outside and then you just need to agree where the race starts and finishes before launching your vessels! Dance in the Rain Buy a waterproof cover for your smartphone and let your child take pictures of you and the family frolicking in the wet weather. Take out your most colourful brollies and welly boots to make the pictures extra special. Go on a Bug Hunt The rain entices out plenty of creatures, such as slugs and snails. It’s also fun to look for creatures that are sheltering like birds, spiders and woodlouse. familiesonline.co.uk

Invisible Goodness Wrapped Up in Fun
Perform founder, Lucy Quick tells us more. Perform classes are a bit like a pasta sauce that’s filled with hidden vegetables: kids think it’s really tasty and don’t realise that it’s full of healthy nutrition. I see our classes like this - invisible goodness wrapped up in an hour of games, roleplay, dance routines and songs. The children think they’re enjoying an hour of fun but
they’re also being equipped with essential confidence-building social skills.
social skills - not to create just another drama school.

Budding young performers at Stagecoach dazzle in 2020. This year budding young performers attending Stagecoach Highgate have benefitted from numerous opportunities to perform on the big stage. In March students have a once in a lifetime chance to perform at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium which allows the students to show off their singing in a spectacular performance before an audience of 60,000. Following that, in July students will perform in the xWest End at Her Majesty’s Theatre as part of a nationwide showcase of stagecoach schools. Principal of Stagecoach Highgate, Odette Garvey, said, “We are thrilled that we can give our students so many opportunities to perform. The children have shared some unforgettable experiences, and they continue to excel no matter what comes their way. The performances will stay with them long after the events themselves. The school will be starting their new term in April and will hold their summer workshop in July continuing to help children unlock their ‘Creative Courage For Life’., “We look forward to welcoming new students and helping them thrive and grow in confidence through singing, dancing and acting.
