Hello summer! The long summer holiday is nearly here, bringing with it both the prospect of holidays and fun with the family but also, for many parents, the challenges of summer childcare and working from home whilst the children are off! Well, fear not… inside this issue we have lots of ideas for family days out, ways to enjoy the great outdoors, listings for local holiday clubs and classes and some top tips on how to amuse the children and be as productive as possible when you’re WFH!

Our Summer feature is the Commonwealth Games, which is being hosted in Birmingham for 2022. Test your knowledge with our Commonwealth Quiz and find out how your family medal! The Games commence on 28th July and although the majority of events are taking place in the West Midlands, we do have some key events taking place in Warwickshire including the Bowls and Para-bowls at Leamington’s Victoria Park and the Cycling Road Race winding through the historic streets of Warwick. We can’t wait to watch it as a family and introduce Eva to some new sports. This issue, we are launching a new column, ‘Ask the Expert’, and I’m delighted to welcome the first member of our panel, Sue Taylor. Sue has a wealth of experience and expertise in Early Years and has spent her 50-year career working in schools and nurseries, nationally and internationally. She provides some sound advice on how to help prepare your pre-schooler for school in September. Finally, we have a delicious dairy free Neapolitan ice cream recipe for you to try which is healthy and super easy to make as it only has 4 ingredients! So you and

the children can enjoy it guilt free... all we need now is the sunshine! Enjoy the magazine and have a great summer!

Summer in the Alps The Alps may be an obvious destination for the ski season, but how about a summer visit? Summer offers enough green (the mountains) and blue (the sky) to set you up for the whole year - and plenty of fresh air to fill your families’ lungs. With reasonably priced flights from London airports to Geneva then a short drive to Morzine, there is a warm welcome waiting from Paul and Francesca Eyre at Chilly Powder. With the main chalet - Au Coin du Feu - plus two chalets next door, you can organise your own meals, or join the party at ‘Au Coin du Feu’ for dinners that you usually only dream of. Family friendly early evening meals for the children and a daytime crèche for little ones not quite as active as you, with drinks in the bar for the grown ups – or in the Jacuzzi on the terrace – Paul and Francesca will make you wish that this was home! SUMMER FUN

Enjoying the great outdoors By Ed Bassett The school shoes have been kicked under the bed until September, the weather’s looking promising and there’s the great outdoors to explore as a family. A recent study found that taking part in nature-based activities leads to improved mood, less anxiety and positive emotions, so let’s get out there!

Kayaking Kayaking is an exhilarating activity for families with children who are confident in water. It’s also a very versatile activity, given that you can kayak on almost any body of water, including lakes, rivers, streams or even the sea. Tuition and guided trips are widely available throughout the country for first timers.

Gardening Gardens are great spaces to explore sensory development. By encouraging children to feel and understand the texture of soil, actively listen out for birds (and next door’s dog) and smell the flowers, you will improve their sensory awareness and recognition. Better still, if you engage children in growing their own food, they naturally have a keener interest in eating it, encouraging healthy eating habits from a young age. Even city kids can watch and wonder at plants growing on a windowsill. Cress, salad leaves and tomato plants are very simple to grow and don’t require any outdoor space at all.

Foraging Nettles, elderflowers, blackberries, cherries, chestnuts and apples can all be found in woods and forests at various points throughout the summer and early autumn and can be safely foraged for all types of cooking, baking and jam-making. The Woodland Trust has a handy guide for what’s in season in the UK for those wanting to try their hand at foraging. (https://bit.ly/ WoodlandTrustForage) Remember, while foraging in public spaces and footpaths is perfectly legal, if you’re on private land you will need the permission of the landowner.

Ed Bassett is Head of Wanderlust at Camptoo. To book a campervan for your next road trip, visit www.camptoo.co.uk

Forest bathing Forest bathing is about being calm and quiet among trees, observing the natural environment while breathing deeply, in order to de-stress and boost wellbeing. This meditative practice can be beneficial both for adults and children. Find a quiet spot and start breathing deeply. Try hugging a tree. Deep breathwork balances blood pressure, boosts energy levels, improves sleep, strengthens respiratory function, supports healthy functioning of the immune system and relieves stress. Encourage children to observe out loud what they can see, hear and smell around them and how it makes them feel.

Camping Camping makes the most of longer days and even a weekend spent immersed in nature is a breath of fresh air and healthy, wholesome fun for all ages. Look up at night and marvel at the free light show on offer from various constellations, stars and planets. You’ll enjoy the slower pace, a greater connection both with nature and your family and be ready to return home feeling calmer, less anxious and less irritable.

Scavenger hunts A scavenger hunt adds an extra layer of interaction and incentive to any walk. Set out with a list of specific animals, bugs, flowers and trees to find and challenge the kids to find the natural treasures along the way. For younger children, ask them to spot different colours - such as looking out for red leaves, ladybirds or birds’ feathers. 6 Families Warwickshire editor@familieswarwickshire.co.uk

PARENTING

Home working in the school holidays By Louise Goss School holidays can be one of the most challenging times for a working parent. Even with organised childcare, holiday clubs and generous offers from grandparents, there are often days when you are trying to meet deadlines while acting as a snack vending machine or being constantly pestered by demands to ‘look at me.’ Here are a few tips to help you cope with the stressors and be as productive as possible. Prepare in advance Realistically, you probably won’t get as much done on the days your children are home. Knowing and accepting this can immediately lessen the stress and frustration. Ahead of the holidays, if you have time to prepare in advance, you’ll also ease the anxiety over how you’ll manage your workload. If you have any big projects or deadlines looming, try to get the bulk of the work out of the way so that you’re left with the smaller tasks to complete during the holidays. Of course, it’s not just managing your own expectations but also those of your customers, colleagues and clients. A good way to prevent misunderstandings about availability is to let clients know you won’t be available for a big order or that deadlines will need to be extended to allow for shorter working days. You can help emphasise these boundaries for others and keep them firm for yourself by highlighting reduced office hours when you speak to colleagues and in your emails and utilising automated out-of-office email responses. Fill their cup It can be hard to focus with a child clamouring for your attention. But by giving your child the right kind of quality time, they are often more accepting when you need to step away to work. I often find when I am very present and engaged with my children for a short time, they are satisfied and happy to then play alone for a while, freeing me up to work in peace. Getting them set up with a game or started with some Lego building are great ways to give them your time and then allow you to step away.

Communication is key Communicate with your team. Be transparent about your situation and capacity. Explore flexible working options. Setting boundaries is important when you are trying to work with other family members around. Communicating to children and partners when you are and are not available can prevent any misunderstandings or resentment. Younger children hear the word ‘no’ a lot, so a more positive way of asking them to be patient is to give them something to look forward to after you’ve finished your work, whether it is the collage you’ll make together or a den you’ll build. Ask for help Don’t forget or be afraid to ask for help. We can often feel guilty or that we have failed in some way if we don’t manage everything. However, asking for help is a sensible way to relieve stress and maintain some balance. Older children and other family members may be able to help with housework or babysitting. You could even organise a swap with a fellow working parent to look after each other’s children a couple of times a week, allowing you each to work on your child-free days. Louise Goss is a journalist and the Founder of The Homeworker magazine (www.thehomeworker.com) which supports people who work from home and remotely.

PERFORMING ARTS

A love of performing can develop key skills for life Whether it be diving into their dressing up box or stepping onto the stage, performing is important to children and young people, and the benefits of this can often go unnoticed. Performing arts can teach children and young people key skills that can be used in everyday life. Creativity Children are naturally imaginative, and pretend play and make believe comes easily to them. Imaginative play can enable a child’s social and emotional development, helping them to form new ideas and develop resourcefulness.

Confidence Building Some children are never happier than putting on a show for their family and friends, but for some standing up in front of an audience can be daunting. Performing arts are hugely beneficial to children’s confidence levels. Learning new skills, rehearsing, and performing in a safe space, with the support of expert teachers and encouragement of their peers, can prepare children to deal with situations in which they feel anxious. At PQA we believe that our three core modules, Musical Theatre, Comedy & Drama and Film & Television, offer our students the very best mix of both performance based and technical training as well as providing them with skills for life to help them grow into wellrounded individuals. For more information vist www.pqacademy.com

Problem solving The ability to solve problems creatively within the safety of a performing arts environment can be transferred to everyday life when dealing with a variety of issues. If children feel comfortable exploring and dealing with problems in a non-linear way, this makes them more confident overall. Empathy Performance is a classic form of storytelling, not only for entertainment but for sharing tales and ideas. Performing in character can help children appreciate another person’s point of view. To accurately portray a character, we need to be able to step into their shoes, understand their situation and what has brought them to that situation. If a child understands a character in this way, they can apply this to everyday life, helping them to react to friends and adults and develop their social skills. Listening The ability to listen is an important skill, especially when a child is in a new setting with new routines and expectations. During performing arts classes children take direction from their teachers and peers. This encourages them to be receptive to others’ ideas and work collaboratively.

ASK THE EXPERT

Families Warwickshire have teamed up with a panel of experts in all manner of subjects to answer your questions. First up is Sue Taylor. Sue is our Early Years Expert with 50 years experiece working in schools and nurseries, nationally and internationally. We put your questions to her about starting school.

Q: My son is starting school in September. How can I help him prepare? Amy, Leamington There are lots of practical things you can do before he starts. If your son doesn’t have an older sibling already attending the school make time occasionally to go past the school to familiarise him with the building, saying positive things like “Look there’s the playground you will play in with your friends”, “This is where mummy will say goodbye” etc. All Reception classes hold induction days and it is so important for him to attend these if possible. It will give him a chance to meet his new teacher and peers and also familiarise himself with the classroom. If there is an opportunity to meet some of the other mums, try and organise a play session or picnic in the park before school starts. This will really help him when everything is so unfamiliar, particularly in those first few days.

Q: What will my daughter be expected to be able to do when she starts school? Megan, Stratford-upon-Avon It is so important that she feels as confident as possible especially when doing the basics e.g. recognising her own name, managing her own personal hygiene, putting her coat on and being able to use a knife and fork. Practice these skills at home over the summer but please don’t worry if your daughter hasn’t mastered them all before September, she will get lots of support at school.

Q: My daughter is showing signs of anxiety about starting school. How can I help her? Lucy, Coventry If there is a particular issue that seems to be concerning your daughter and is making her anxious, always have a quick word with her teacher to alleviate your worry. It is usually something that can be sorted out quickly and easily. Just remember, however anxious you feel, which is very normal, try not to transfer this to her and ALWAYS use positive language. Take every day as it comes, good today, not so good tomorrow, it’s all very normal and she’ll soon settle into her new routine.

Q: My twins have been in full-time nursery since I went back to work. How different is school to nursery? Rebecca, Warwick

Screen time: how much is too much? The online world can be great for creativity, learning new things, connecting and downtime. It allows parents some time off too. However, there needs to be a balance. Consider an agreement on holiday tech use. Set age specific rules around what, when, where and how much time each child is allowed. Once the rules are agreed, stick to them. Don’t use screen time as a reward. This sends the wrong message about screen importance. Give countdown warnings before screen time ends. Simple verbal reminders prepare children to switch off, thus avoiding techno tantrums! Review the latest apps, games and movies together. Let your child show you what they are doing. Use parental controls to ensure children aren’t accessing inappropriate content. Try www.familyzone.com or www. breckfoundation.org/post/screen-time Establish no-tech zones such as the bedroom and mealtimes, set a good example by not constantly checking your own phone and make sure that all tech is switched off at least an hour before bedtime.

FREE copy of Help your Child Cope with Change Families has teamed up with Summersdale to offer readers this accessible guide to supporting your child through difficult experiences and life changes, including divorce, new siblings or the loss of a loved one. Change is part of life but for a child, events such as starting school, dealing with changes in the family or unsettled times in the wider world can feel destabilising and frightening. As parents and carers, it can sometimes be hard to know what to do for the best. This book, written by Liat Joshi Hughes, offers actionable tips that will give you and your child the tools to navigate difficult times. To apply for your free copy, visit www.familiesmag.co.uk/go Closing date: 19 August. T&Cs at https://bit.ly/Famhelpyourchild

Even when children have been to nursery, there are certain situations they may find challenging when first starting school, noisy dining rooms, new boundaries to follow, being able to sit and listen and that big, noisy and boisterous playground! Although nursery is often longer hours, school is completely new environment for them and you may notice that they are really tired whilst they get used to it all. Finally, remember this is an important next step for you and your child and whilst exciting it can also be overwhelming for you both. The most important thing is to BE POSITIVE! If you have a question you’d like to ask our experts, please email editor@familieswarwickshire.co.uk by Friday 29th July 2022 and you could feature in our next issue.

CU FOOD

Make dairy-free Neapolitan ice cream!

AN T OU DK T E P

We asked Emily Leary, multi-award-winning food, lifestyle and parenting writer, presenter, photographer and author of A Mummy Too (www.amummytoo.co.uk) to share her delicious, creamy dairy-free Neapolitan ice cream recipe with us. So the secret ingredient in this wonderfully tasty ice cream is …. banana! When you freeze sliced bananas and then blitz them in your blender or powerful food processor, the banana eventually turns into a silky, creamy ice cream which can be flavoured with vanilla, cocoa and frozen strawberries to create gorgeous Neapolitan ice cream. Freeze in a container to create that classic Neapolitan look.

Instructions Ingredients

Step 1 Grab a non-stick tray that will sit flat in your freezer. In a single layer, add the banana slices to the tray with the strawberries to one side. It’s okay if the layers overlap a bit, you may just have to break them up once frozen. You may need more than one tray. Then freeze your fruit.

Step 2 Blitz the frozen bananas in a blender. Set the frozen strawberries to one side. The bananas will look chunky/sandy at first; continue until you have a pale, creamy mixture. If you don’t have a strong blender, bliz in batches. If your bananas won’t blend, let them defrost for five minutes, until softer.

Step 3 Divide the banana mixture between three freezer-safe bowls.

6 large bananas (750g peeled weight) sliced into 2cm (3/4 inch) pieces

150g (5.3oz) strawberries, hulled and halved

1 tsp vanilla extract

2 tsp cocoa powder (dutch processed)

Equipment • • • • • • •

Weighing scales Measuring spoons Chopping board Kitchen knife Food processor 3 bowls 1 litre freezer-safe tub with lid

Makes approx. 1 litre of ice cream.

Step 4 Add the vanilla to the first bowl, the cocoa to the second and the strawberries to the third. Stir well. Pop the third bowl with the strawberries and banana back into the blender and blitz until smooth. You now have your three flavours.

Step 5 Your ice cream may have become quite loose, which can make sectioning it in the container tricky. If necessary, cover all three bowls and firm back up by freezing for an hour.

familiesonline.co.uk

Step 6 Once the three flavours are firm enough to hold their shape, transfer into a 1 litre tupperware container in the traditional Neapolitan pattern. Pop on the lid and freeze for another hour, or until firm enough to scoop. Enjoy! editor@familieswarwickshire.co.uk Families Warwickshire 15
