It’s Official! Our Readers Prefer Families Magazine to the Internet! Last year, we conducted a survey across the UK asking readers to tell us what they find useful about our magazine and how likely they would be to respond to advertising in it. We were delighted to receive almost 500 responses and by the wonderful feedback you gave us. More than 70% of our readers said they were highly likely to respond to advertising in our magazine or had already done so. That’s fabulous news for our advertisers and for our readers, because it means we can carry on making the magazine better and better! A whopping 79% of readers told us that they use the magazine to research ideas for local family activities or classes and clubs for children and an equally impressive 74% said they use it to plan family life. Many of you also told us that you find easier to plan family activities and entertainment using Families Magazine than using the internet! You told us that using the internet to research and plan can be time consuming and confusing, involving lots of trawling online for useful information. A common complaint seems to be the “endless trawling” that digital research involves.
A typical response came from a reader in Leamington Spa who says: “Our go to when deciding what to do over the weekends and holidays. Saves us hours of searching on the internet so we get to enjoy more quality time as a family.” Another reader told us: “I have given up on googling what is happening over the school holidays as I just get bombarded with hundreds of websites. It can get exhausting and time consuming clicking on each one.” Readers also told us that they really value having a physical magazine in their hands in which all the information relevant to family life has already been collated and is presented to them in an easy-to-digest format.
We were also really happy that large numbers of you reported that Families Magazine makes your lives easier and less stressful and saves you time. Thank you to everyone that volunteered their comments. If you are interested in taking part in one of our Reader Forums, please email info@ familiesmagazine.co.uk with your name, phone number and post code. *Readers names have not been quoted for privacy reasons
A typical response came from a reader who says: “In this time of social media it is great to have a magazine you can pick up and physically flick through rather than having to fight through hundreds of e-mails and pop up adverts for individual offers.” A reader in Tiddington says: “Families Warwickshire is a great magazine as it has lots of interesting articles and is a useful tool to everyday parenting. An enjoyable read every couple of months."

Issue 47 | May/June 2019 | Families Warwickshire Pupdate Phoebe has been with us for over two months now and is doing really well. Although she is still very nervous in certain places and situations, her confidence is continuing to grow. She doesn’t like traffic and loud noises such as car doors slamming or the bin lorry in action! However, she has such character and steps out the house with an air of ‘Today, I’m going to be brave’ about her! Oh, and she’s found her voice - when she uses it, to quote Shakespeare, “Though she be but little she is fierce!” Her favourite times, without a doubt, are being away from houses, cars and busy places, off lead and exploring the countryside with her brother Eddie. A copy of ‘What A Waste’ by Dr Jess French “Humans are now producing more waste than ever before and our planet is suffering. I truly believe that if everyone was aware of how bad their rubbish is for the planet, they would take the steps to change it. By spreading the word, I hope we can begin to turn the tide on waste and make our world a nicer, cleaner place for all of us to enjoy.” Dr Jess French What A Waste by Dr Jess French is the latest book from the popular children’s television presenter, zoologist and author. This highly illustrated, fact filled book will help young readers understand how human action is affecting planet Earth and shows how small changes can make a huge difference. The book explains issues in a clear way with visual examples and illustrations to make it easy for young readers to understand. And it’s not all bad news, Dr Jess French looks at what we are doing to make a difference, with positive information about how we are cleaning up our oceans, how we can help save the world with the 3Rs – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, and how we all have the power to make a difference. This book not only educates young readers to help them understand the impact we are having on our planet, it will enthuse them to make positive changes in their own lives and inspire a new generation who can make a world of difference. We have a copy up for grabs – to be in with a chance of winning, simply email your name, phone number and address to editor@familieswarwickshire.co.uk and write ‘Waste’ in the subject.
Get Your Garden Buzzing this Summer Join in the campaign to get the UK’s gardens buzzing this summer with Hozelock’s Plant a Pot campaign. By pledging to plant a bee-friendly plant you can be part of a mission to help save Britain’s bees. Bees are disappearing at an alarming rate and having no bees would mean virtually no flowers, no gardens and very little food. By planting a container with bee-friendly plants, bulbs or seeds, and keeping it watered and healthy throughout the foraging season, you can have a huge impact on the availability of bee food throughout the year. What’s more, if you visit www.plantapot.info and pledge to plant a pot you can be in the running to win £5,000 of prizes as well as monthly gift vouchers.
The Falconer’s Quest Families Warwickshire recently enjoyed a fantastic day out at Warwick Castle and were blown away by the brand-new birds of prey show, The Falconer’s Quest. This family-friendly aerial adventure brings to life a riveting storyline with avian acrobatics by the Castle’s flock that includes Red Kites, Bearded Vultures, eagles, falcons and an Andean Condor boasting a wing span of 3.2metres. It’s a breathtaking show which tells the story of Warwick’s Falconer on an epic quest of discovery to find the finest Birds in all the land. This action-packed, spectacular show, starring over 70 birds of prey - up to around 40 of which will be in the sky at once - promises to be the UK’s largest birds of prey display. The Falconer’s Quest is included with general admission to Warwick Castle and tickets start from £19 per person (based on online bookings made a minimum of five days in advance). www.warwick-castle.com

Parenting best to remind your child that even though the device doesn't mind if you're rude, parents do!
Are There Hidden Costs?
A lot of the content and activities offered by these devices are free, but you still have to pay for memberships and subscriptions - for example, Amazon Prime or Spotify.
Are They Too Easy to Use?
Given that all a child needs to do is say “Alexa” to start a game or activity, the temptation could be hard for some children to resist, even if they have been told not to use it.
Should I Worry about Privacy?
There are also serious privacy concerns about giving an alwayslistening device to your child. According to the NSPCC, putting one of these devices in your child’s bedroom raises worrying questions about how and what they will record. Some devices have been hacked in the past, allowing the smart speaker to become an always-on wiretap.
Alexa? Are You Safe for my Child? By Andrew Campbell
The new range of smart speakers such as Google Home and Amazon Echo offer loads of content for children. What parent wouldn’t want one of these to replace screens and make life run more smoothly? These smart speakers can play games, read audiobooks, tell jokes, provide homework help, stream music and even play mindfulness sessions for when your child needs to chill out. They can offer your children an interactive, screen-less alternative to mobile games and social media, to help prevent them from becoming too dependent. With smart speakers, children are able to interact with technology away from the screen, using audio. However, they are not without risks. So what are the possible downsides?
Do Children Think Alexa is a Real Person?
A US university study found that younger children were more likely to speak to these ‘digital assistants’ as if they were real people, asking them their favourite colour and how old they are. Fears have been expressed that children could turn to these devices to find out or understand things that they might otherwise ask a parent about. This may lead to them to receiving incorrect or inappropriate information as well as potentially lessening of the parental bond.
Do Smart Speakers Make Children Rude?
A child growing up with a home assistant must learn to use the device’s way of interacting. This includes the need to make demands of the device and accepting that the device has limited conversational abilities and social skills. This doesn’t adequately prepare young children for the nuances of human communication. Research has found that the way individuals interact with people in the real world reflects how they communicate with such device. It's
Unauthorised Purchases
Make sure your children know to ask for permission before buying things or adding items to your shopping list. You can prevent unwanted purchases in the device’s security settings.
Raunchy Music
You will need to set parental controls if you don’t want your child to be exposed to inappropriate songs or content.
Should Children Have Their Own Smart Speaker?
If you accept that voice-based technology is where our gadgets are headed, then there is an argument that children need to be familiar with it as it evolves. If you decide to take the leap and buy your child an Echo or Google Home, make sure you're aware of how to keep your children secure whilst using them. Supervision is vital. Pay attention to what your child is doing and don’t allow them to access the device without your permission.
Parenting Quote “Most children threaten at times to run away from home. This is the only thing that keeps some parents going.” Phyllis Diller (1917-2012)

Recently, the Courts changed the system slightly which now allows people to issue their own divorce Petition online. This means that they are issued more speedily and the whole process is done online. However, this isn’t necessarily how everyone wants to do it and you can still apply on a paper application to the Court which still results in the Petition being issued and served. There has been a lot of publicity about no fault divorce and this is being brought in by the Government when new legislation is drafted and passed, but at the moment we are still using the system that has been in place for many years which means that you have to show that your marriage has irretrievably broken down which is backed up by one of the five facts, adultery, unreasonable behaviour, two years separation with consent, desertion or five years separation. The divorce progresses through Decree Nisi and then on to Decree Absolute which is your final decree of divorce.
Within the divorce any issues over children and finance will also need to be resolved and these can be difficult to deal with as separating the family and the family home can be heartbreaking. We can help with that, offering advice on how to deal with the issues and advising what is a reasonable settlement and arrangement. Mediation may be attempted as way of resolving issues in a neutral environment and for some people this works well, however, it is not for everyone. You may be unhappy and wonder whether divorce is the right thing for you. We won’t push you to do anything that isn’t right for you as you have to decide your own future but if you want to chat about your options, please give Alison Rolf a call on 01926 357555 or email alison@ davidsonmahon.co.uk. Fixed fee interviews are available to allow you to gather information and we do offer evening and weekend appointments if that is easier at no extra cost.

Party Bag Ideas By Jude Fellowes
As a mum of three, I know that opinion on whether party bags are an essential component of a children’s party is almost as divided as on whether it’s really necessary to invite the whole of your child’s class to their party. I like to think of myself as a good parent (most of the time), but I confess I do my very best to avoid party bags! I loathe looking round for suitable tat to put in them and feel guilty about the fact that most of what I’m buying will end up in landfill or down the back of my fellow parents’ sofas. Having said this, I would NEVER let my daughter know what I think of party bags because she LOVES them. She also enjoys the excitement of giving them to her friends. So, love them or loathe them, if you are going to “do” party bags, then here are some budget friendly suggestions:
Books
You can get hold of reasonable quality children’s books from discount book stores from as little as £1 or £2 a book - and at least this is a gift that’s educational. Older children may also appreciate books more than other party bag material.
Personalised Biscuits/Cupcakes
Buy or bake some gingerbread men or cupcakes and ice with the name of each party guest for them to take home. This is something your child will also enjoy helping with.
Flowerpots and Packets of Seeds/ Seedlings
Encourage your child’s guests to get a little green fingered by giving them a small packet of flower seeds or some seedlings and a flower pot. Even better, get them to decorate the pot and plant the seeds as a party activity.

Be a Super Awesome Photographer by Henry Carroll Budding young photographers can learn the tricks to becoming a super awesome photographer with this fantastic new book from Henry Carroll (published by Laurence King). Using real photographs for inspiration, this nifty and fun guide book has 20 exciting photo challenges to help children create their own masterpieces. All that’s needed is a camera/smartphone and some super snapping skills. Featuring clever and funny tips like how to be invisible, play with food or stop time, and taking a look at the work of photography geniuses from Carroll himself, to Elliott Erwitt, Emily Stein and many more. Here at Families Warwickshire, we were lucky enough to preview the book. Here’s what my 13 year old thought of it: ‘Very helpful tips’; ‘The layout of the book is fun and good to look at’; ‘The parts in between the tips are very useful and well laid out’; ‘I like that the book doesn’t use super technical words’; ‘I also like that they put who took the photo as you can then go and look up their other work.’ So it’s a definite thumbs up from team Families Warwickshire! What’s it like at Alcester Grammar School? Alcester Grammar School is a unique institution that offers a rich curriculum and a broad all-round education. We pride ourselves on our warm and purposeful atmosphere, underpinned by the dedication and talent of the staff and the enthusiasm of the students. As well as our focus on the intellectual achievement of each student, we are committed to enhancing their enjoyment and interest in the whole school experience. Staff give freely of their time and we offer a comprehensive programme of sport, music and drama, as well as numerous opportunities for trips and visits in the UK and internationally.
One way parents can change this is by setting an example. Research shows that by being active themselves, parents, particularly mothers can influence their child’s activity levels. Another way is to make it social. Research by Women in Sport shows that girls are most interested in making friends and having fun when playing sport. Seek out clubs, classes or activities that may have girls of a similar age as your daughter or encourage her to take up new classes with her existing friends.
Our curriculum is broad and rich, with all students following a full range of subjects in their first three years. After their GCSE exams in year 11, the sixth form offers a free choice of 25 A level subjects, with students able to choose any four in the first instance. Academic results are excellent, but never at the expense of personal development or enjoyment of school life. Our students and staff know that the best success is happy success, and it’s that which makes being at AGS such a great foundation for the challenges of adult life.

Boys spend significantly longer than girls on sporting activities. A report by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) found that boys spend an average of 40 minutes per day on sports activities, compared with 25 minutes a day for girls. But encouragingly, boys and girls who do participate in sport enjoy it equally, according to the study.

Education Naturally, our images of the future workplace are dominated by artificial intelligence, robotics and automation. And whilst it is predicted that the “march of the robots” will remove a quarter of jobs, experts believe that the future of AI is not to replace humans but to change what humans are capable of. Interactive Scientific, a British software company, believes that we can teach children key skills like good communication, persistence and problem solving, all before knowing what future technologies will look like. These skills will be vital for our children to navigate an unpredictable jobs market.
What Can You Do to Prepare Your Child?
The Future of Work
What Can We Do to Prepare Our Children? By Gabrielle Nash It is exciting when your child heads off to school for the first time. What will their first day be like? What will spark their interest? The goal of school is to give your child the necessary tools and skills to enter our grown-up world and ultimately find a job. But what kind of job will that be? The world of work is undergoing a transformation and future careers will look very different to the those of today. Many of the jobs our children will do don’t currently exist, just as the top ten jobs in 2011 didn’t exist in 2004. As new technologies explode onto the scene, new job opportunities are created. According to Randstad, it is
estimated that today’s students will have 10 to 14 jobs before their 38th birthday!
What Type of Jobs?
Just as our parents had never heard of job titles like “social media manager” or “app developer” neither can we as parents fathom what our children might grow up to do. Redundant is the traditional question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Our children will need to keep an open mind about their career path. Predicting what jobs will be in demand is difficult. They could perhaps include biomedical engineers creating artificial organs; interpreters (a growth industry despite automated translation tools becoming popular); or new healthcare roles looking after our increasing number of over-65s. All of these industries we know have a future.
However good an education your child is receiving, there are very few establishments with a futureproof curriculum, one that can wholly offer the development of skills needed for getting a job in 15 to 20 years’ time. This is perhaps why more and more emphasis could be placed on vocational education. The Edge Foundation works on developing the future of education. They argue that old certainties like a university degree will no longer guarantee a job. Edge Chief Executive Alice Barnard believes, “We need to support young people to capitalize on their creativity, develop the problemsolving, communication and team-working skills that employers are crying out for.” Whilst, as parents, we might think that giving our children a head start with coding, for example, will equip them with the kind of skills they will need for the future, this is surprisingly not the case.

Education Surprisingly, whilst fostering a curiosity about technology and digital fluency is paramount, gaining complex skills like coding is not the recipe for success (partly because machines will do that very well); instead it’s more personal or “soft” skills that will help our children excel.
The Key Things to Remember?
1. Interpersonal and communication skills are vital, because the human factor in a job will still be valuable. 2. The ability to adapt is crucial. One set of skills will not last 20 years, so teaching a child to be resilient and comfortable with change will help them to continuously learn and evolve. So, if your child seems like they’re not excelling in traditional measures of excellence, don’t panic. Instead focus on developing their other skills and exploring all pathways. A child who is behind on maths and English might, in fact, have fantastic potential people skills. If they’re empathetic and kind, or adaptable and able to find solutions, that could take them further than their academic ability and give them the foundation to tackle a myriad of roles in the future. Getting Back to Basics with Outdoor Play Modern life means that children are increasingly spending less time outside. Claire Winter looks at what we can do to inject play back into our children’s lives. A recent report by The Children’s Play Policy Forum (CPPF) says there is a modern crisis in childhood and they are calling for children to be given more play opportunities. Increased time spent on screens and the cancellation of public liability insurance for children’s playgrounds means that kids are spending less and less time outdoors playing.
Kings Camps
It also warns that the cost to society of allowing these trends to continue is significant including the human cost of physical and mental ill-health, and the financial cost of increased demand on public services.
Onside Coaching
The CPPF also points out that the mental health of a generation is at risk. Just last year the NHS released figures saying that one in eight children has a mental health

What's on
issue, which is a shocking statistic. Childhood obesity is also on the rise. We need to start making changes now. Robin Sutcliffe, Chair of the CPPF says: “Lack of play leaves children mentally and physically unprepared to cope with life. This affects them in childhood and throughout the rest of their lives. There are huge benefits to be gained when we make sufficient time and space for children to play every day. These benefits contribute to the prevention of the prime issues of health, mental health, obesity and school exclusion - key issues in need of urgent resolution. Play builds happy, healthy children.” Playing outdoors allows children to learn new skills in a fun environment. It also helps enhance creativity and boosts wellbeing. It makes children more sociable and the health benefits are numerous; they get stronger bones and better fitness levels and that all-important Vitamin D. They learn how to take risks and become more independent too. So what can we do get our children outside?
Limit Screen Time
Decide what a reasonable time is for your child/children to spend on electrical gadgets and stick to it. Get them to agree to your time limits. You could even create a printed contract that you can both sign! There are also some great apps that you can use to restrict time on devices too.
Let Them Get Messy
Get them outside in their old clothes, wellies or trainers. Tell them it's fine to get wet and dirty. Let them explore and enjoy being in the elements! One of my favourite memories is digging a huge mud pit in my garden with

Re-introduce Traditional Childhood Games
Go back to the ones that you remember like hopscotch and skipping. You could also get them to invent new games like building a real-life Minecraft shelter or devising a Scavenger Hunt with a theme. Balls, chalk, and buckets are all fun to have outside too.

Get some seeds and plant up some pots to grow on your windowsill, kitchen or back garden. It’s always magical watching those first shoots appear. Sometimes simple advice is needed in a complicated world. We are all spending much more time sitting down and on devices than we did twenty years ago. I have visited so many beautiful places and watched both parents AND children are glued to a phone or device. I am also guilty of this, I often use working for myself as an excuse, but we don’t have to be contactable all the time. Disconnecting from gadgets is vital to feel connected to the world and the people that live in it. If we model the behaviour we want to see from our children, take a break from our laptop and mobile phone and play outside too, hopefully, they will be inspired to do the same.
