Welcome Back… When your child starts school, September becomes the ‘new’ New Year. January may be all about diets and denial, but September is about new challenges and new beginnings. Isobel has moved to a new school, so has new classmates and a new routine. Eliza is now in Reception, under the care of the very same wonderful teacher who taught Isobel. You’d have thought she’d have learnt to avoid the Butters name second time round! And I’m left feeling just a little less useful. It’s made me think about what skills I would take back into the ‘real’ world after nearly seven years as a full time mum. I can confidently say I’m the master of multi-skilling. Show me a man who can bottle feed a baby, while potty training a toddler, or cook Annabel Karmel’s Spaghetti Bolognaise with 37 organic vegetables while removing felt tip stains from the new sofa. I’ve also developed my skills as a manager, co-ordinating a team of unskilled and broadly unhelpful workers in manual labour around the house. I can motivate and I’m not afraid to punish. Think how efficient offices across Leeds would be if people were denied TV and chocolate when deadlines weren’t met! And if the UN ever needs a first class negotiator – I’m your woman. “Five minutes and we’re going.” “Why not ten minutes Mummy?”pipes up Isobel. “You’ve got seven – that’s my final offer.” If I can get my girls to leave the playground at Harewood on a sunny afternoon that easily, imagine what I’d achieve in the boardrooms of Britain? If returning to work is on your mind, take a look at our feature on page 6. We’ve also got some tips on how to help your child cope with starting school, some advice on how to manage the homework battle and our regular September look at the very best Clubs and Classes in Leeds. All this and a great competition to win a season pass to the wonderful Stockeld Park (page 17). Enjoy your new challenge this September. I’m off to brush up on my taxi driving skills! Getting back

TO WORK…

Your child has just started school and you’re looking to return to the working world. But where do you start? We talk to the educational recruitment company Celsian about why they want to hear from you.

S

USAN CUNNINGHAM is one of many mums juggling motherhood and a return to work. Today she’s in a classroom at Brownhill Primary School in Leeds, supporting children with their studies. Susan has been placed here by Celsian, an agency which provides staff from nursery environments to further education establishments. “It’s difficult to get a permanent post because, as a mum I would have to say yes, I want the job, but I only want to work on a Monday and Wednesday,”says Susan. “With Celsian, it’s really flexible – it fits in.” At Celsian’s Leeds office, there’s a team of seven consultants working to recruit staff to schools and nurseries. They’ve forged close links with schools and communities and are providing flexible work for both qualified teachers looking to return to the classroom, and women looking for a new career. “Education is a female dominated industry, so we work with a lot of mums,”says James March from Celsian. “Becoming a mum can often spark a desire to change career. The hours you can work in education are great if you’re a mum with a young family.” You don’t need any formal teaching qualifications to sign up for Celsian’s help in finding work. However, you will need to go through a CRB check and be able to provide appropriate references. James and his team say more important than qualifications is a passion about working with children.

“We look for people who can engage and inspire children. We want people with a ‘can do’ attitude. Very often, you’ll go into an environment where you’re filling a gap in their rota and you need to hit the ground running.” Susan has that passion and takes it into schools across Leeds two days a week. While she loves being a mum to her 16 month old daughter Jaeda, she also loves the difference she’s making in the classroom as a teaching assistant. With Celsian, she’s able to enjoy doing both. “I really enjoy working with children who are struggling to get the basics,” says Susan. “It’s great to see their eyes sparkle when it’s clicked and they start to believe in themselves. Every day is different. Every day I learn too!” To find out if Celsian can help you return to work call James March on 0113 244 0140. www.celsianeducation.co.uk

n e r d l i h C y p p a Healthy Teeth, H Leeds tooth decay. Families m fro d re ffe su ve ha . s ildren in Leed m experts in Yorkshire fro lp he e m so Four out of every ten ch th wi h et te to protect your childʼs looks at the best way

O LOOK AT ISOBEL HARDY, it’s hard to believe that just two weeks ago this bright little three year old was in hospital. She was admitted to the Leeds Dental Institute for treatment. A fortnight on and Isobel’s on the road to recovery, but her mum Rosie still can’t forget the day she discovered the extent of her daughter’s tooth decay. “I went to the Leeds Dental Institute expecting to be turned away as another paranoid mother,” says Rosie. Instead she was told that Isobel’s decay had progressed too far and the only solution was the removal of six of her baby teeth. Isobel (left) is one of the ten new pre-school patients seen every week by the renowned Leeds Dental Institute. In the Paediatric Unit, they deal with the worst cases of decay in Yorkshire. Four in every ten children here in Leeds have tooth decay so it’s no surprise that family dentists are referring more than 200 new patients every month to specialists at the Dental Institute. Mr Stephen Fayle is a Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry here. He says there are a number of reasons for these alarming statistics, but the problem can begin even before a child has their first tooth. “Things go wrong at weaning,”says Mr Fayle. “Some families add extra sugar to food to make it more palettable for children. However, all this does is make the child used to having sweet things.” For some children, like Isobel, decay is unavoidable. During her treatment she was diagnosed with weak enamel and so no amount of dietary constraints would have prevented the loss of her teeth. However for most children decay can be avoided by control of diet and eating patterns. “Children who eat and drink more frequently – especially fruit juices and sugary drinks – are more likely to get decay,”says Mr Fayle. “Try to get your child to eat only at mealtimes. That gives the mouth time to rest and recover. In between, the only safe drinks are milk and water.” Many of the pre-school children seeking treatment for advanced decay have been allowed to take bottles of fruit juice to bed with them at night. The key message from experts here in Leeds is, get your child off a bottle which allows them to ‘graze’ and onto a feeder cup . If children need the comfort of a bottle, fill it only with water. Adding fluoride to the local water supply makes a significant difference to decay, but in Leeds that doesn’t happen. A child in Yorkshire has twice the decay of a child in the West Midlands, where fluoride is added to water. So it’s up to parents to introduce it. The most effective way is to brush all the family’s teeth with adult strength toothpaste. “All children over three should be using adult strength toothpaste,” says Mr Fayle. “You can use it from six months. Start with a smear, then a pea size blob once the child is three. A child should spit out but NOT rinse. That way they leave some fluoride protection on their teeth.”

T

FAMILIES LEEDS | September/October 2010 9

At the Hardy house, not only is everyone brushing with adult toothpaste twice a day, but there’s not a fruit juice to be found. Rosie is angry her local dentist didn’t refer her to the Dental Institute earlier – that way some of Isobel’s six teeth may have been saved. But with Isobel’s healthy smile now back, it’s about making sure the decay doesn’t return. “I went through the ‘this is my fault, what have I done wrong, I’m a useless parent’ phase,”says Rosie. “I’ve been through every emotion but I’ve come to the conclusion that this happened because of a combination of factors. But we’ve changed our approach as a family and it won’t happen again.”

BABY BALLET? Think pink and you’re about halfway there! These sessions are filled with fun, familiar songs with the dedicated teachers encouraging basic dance moves with the help of Twinkle Bear. Tutus aren’t compulsory, but they’re hard to resist. The sessions in Leeds North have recently been taken over by Rachael GascoigneHiggins and her partner Nancy Lucas. Miss Rachael says they’ve launched new classes across Leeds and there’s more to come. But why does she think Baby Ballet is so popular? “We do the same thing every week for half a term – children thrive on that repetition. They love knowing which song is coming next, which actions are coming up. They pick it up so quickly, even in the baby classes.” There are certificates at the end of each half term and each session ends with a cuddle from Twinkle Bear. Make sure you leave your naughty toes at home!

“Georgia has loved learning ballet with Twinkle Bear. When she puts on her tutu, she knows it’s a Baby Ballet day!” Kaley Gardiner, mum to Baby Ballerina Georgia.

Baby Yoga for children from 12 weeks old. Babies spend so much time strapped in car seats and prams, this is a class which gives you the opportunity to hold and bond with your child, while getting some exercise. Classes work through a series of simple movements and stretches, combined with rhymes and songs. Samantha Dalton runs Flutterbabies and says when mums come along to the classes they are very often surprised that it’s not a series of static poses and meditations. “Mum also gets a fantastic post natal workout,â€?says Samantha. “The postures used help to re-align and strengthen mum’s body, tone the stomach, the pelvic floor muscles and the arms. It isn’t all done sitting on a mat, so be prepared to tone that mummy tummy!â€? Where can I find a class? FAMILIES LEEDS | September/October 2010

The great Homework debate… Are your after school hours filled with arguments? Do you spend family weekends at war over worksheets? Families Leeds asks if homework is putting too much pressure on family life with the help of some local experts.

Begin your Kumon journey Kumon’s maths and English study programmes provide your child with the foundations to improve their skill set, inspiring a passion for lifelong learning and building the self-confidence to succeed both in and outside the classroom.

Jasmine Lee loves her homework. With the help of her mum Karen, she enjoys the weekly reading assignments and spelling tests sent home from Rawdon St Peter’s Primary School. However, now Jasmine is moving into Year One, Karen is prepared for change. “It seems to be common that the transition from Reception to Year One is a big step up in terms of homework,”says Karen. “I hope not, because I think Jasmine learns just as much from playing with friends.” When the leading children’s author Eleanor Updale recently suggested that too much

homework is polluting our family life, it led to a debate at school gates and in staff rooms across the country. In a national newspaper article, Dr Updale said too much homework may be the reason for our children turning into ‘coach potatoes’. “What drives children out of the garden, away from the kitchen table and in front of screens? What gives them the excuse to cut themselves off? It’s homework.” Dr Updale is not the first to question the value of homework, especially in primary schools. Cecily Hanlon is a retired teacher from Leeds. She received overwhelming support at last year’s Association of Teachers and Lecturers conference, for her motion that “Homework in our primary schools is a waste of children’s, teacher’s and parent’s time.” It’s a view she continues to hold today. “Home should be a haven,” says Cecily. “If a child has been struggling with something at school all day, do they really need to struggle with it when they get home? Surely when children are at home it should be a time for building solid, secure relationships.” Parents are divided over the issue

of homework. While some see their children enjoying the after school stimulation, others see it as a battle. One parent told Families Leeds she was unable to see the point of learning spellings which her daughter could not remember a week on. “My daughter loves going to Rainbows on a Wednesday. But that’s the night we should be drilling our spellings,”said one mum of a six year old. “I struggle to see how learning to spell ‘discussion’ or ‘neighbour’ is more beneficial to my daughter’s development, than making friends and enjoying being a child. Especially when she can’t remember the spellings the day after the test!” Guidelines for schools say a five year old should do one hour of homework a week, consisting of reading and spelling alongside literacy and numeracy work. By Year Three the workload should rise to an hour and a half each week. However critics say any homework puts pressure on the most disadvantaged children in our schools who don’t have the parental support at home. A more useful approach, says Cecily Hanlon, is to encourage families to spend time together. “Get your child to help you write a shopping list, or estimate how many potatoes are needed for supper. Play a board game with them or go for a walk. Just participate in family life.” And many parents agree. Victoria Iball is keen to support her son Finlo’s education, but she’s equally keen to protect his after school time. “If a sunny evening of play is underway, we feel the value of that more strongly,” says Victoria. “His teachers have been understanding and his progress unaffected. When other countries start formal schooling later than in our system, added homework at this stage seems crazy.”

We inspire our children to excel in all they do.

At Richmond House School we offer a challenging and welcoming environment for young children to grow into confident, accomplished and happy individuals.

Richmond House School, 170 Otley Road, Leeds LS16 5LG E: enquiries@rhschool.org www.rhschool.org

“When homework becomes a tussle, you need to stop” Jane Disley is Headteacher at Richmond House School in Far Headingley. She gives Families Leeds her views on homework. Are our children getting too much homework? I think there is too much emphasis – especially for little children – on homework. I’m not sure how effective it is when a child has been working hard all day in the classroom, expecting them to work in the evening. What do you think is an appropriate amount of homework? At Richmond House, we do set homework. At Year 1, it goes home three times a week. I’d expect some practice of spellings and timetables. There can be an activity that can be done easily with a parent. This would take ten minutes maximum – but NOT anything that requires a child to be taught. I think a big problem comes with maths because many parents didn’t learn maths in the way it’s taught today. That can create conflict. What input should parents have? I’d expect a parent to take some time to explain things to a child, not to actually teach them. A parent’s role is to be a parent, to look after the child, to love a child. It’s not a parent’s role to be a teacher in a home environment. Children need to go home and enjoy family life, enjoy playing and being young children. We try to keep homework flexible. There’s no point in a teacher giving out homework if there is an after school birthday party. Homework is for a child to do with a parent NOT a parent pushing a child to do it. I always say to parents, at the point it becomes a tussle with the child, or the child isn’t learning, you need to stop completely.

If a child is in a school where there’s an expectation on behaviour, however much fun we make it, there is a lot of time when they need to concentrate. Children can only do that for so long. We can’t expect them to do it again in the evening. Richmond House School is a co-educational preparatory school for children from 3 – 11 years old based in Far Headingley. 0113 275 2670 • www.rhschool.org

Kumon’s Good Homework Guide…

Homework can feel more manageable if you are prepared. Here’s some tips from Kumon. Create a homework routine that works around your household. Find a dedicated area where your child can work undisturbed by siblings or television. Make sure you have your ‘Homework Kit’. You’ll limit interruptions such as searching for a pencil or a sharpener. Ensure your child understands a teacher’s instructions before they begin. Take an interest in what your child is doing and give them praise. Set up a positive reward system. Carrots tend to work better than sticks! Want to try Kumon for FREE? Enrol at your local centre before the 20th October and try Kumon for a fortnight. www.kumon.co.uk • 0800 854 714

Think OUTSIDE the Sandwich Box! Most of the lunchboxes we are packing for our children are unhealthy. That’s according to a recent report by the University of Leeds. We’ve asked Nutritional Therapist Jenny Thewlis to help you pack up the perfect lunchbox. Providing your child with a nutritious lunch will give them energy, help them concentrate and focus their behaviour. However, finding truly healthy choices is tough. Did you know that children eating a packed lunch consume more fat, sugar and salt, on average than their school dinner counterparts? So what’s the recipe for the perfect pack up?

A healthy lunchbox should include…

FRESH FRUIT AND VEGETABLES Try and ‘eat a rainbow’ every day. Five portions should be a conservative goal!

GOOD QUALITY PROTEIN Choose from chicken, meat (preferably not processed), fish, eggs, cheese. This will help your child grow and develop.

DAIRY Give your child the calcium they need with yoghurt, milk or cheese.

DRINKS

COMPLEX CARBOHYDRATE Choose from brown bread, brown rice, wholemeal pitta, wholemeal wrap, oatcakes. This provides slow release energy and keeps blood sugar stable.

Jenny’s Perfect Packed Lunch…

Water is definitely best for hydration. Milk (kept cold), smoothies and diluted fresh fruit juice (½ & ½) are all good choices. Drinks sweetened with sugar provide unnecessary calories, whilst ‘no added sugar’ usually means nasty chemical sweeteners.

Use Wholemeal Pitta – they tend to go less soggy over the course of the morning. Ditch the sandwich and opt for a cold pasta dish, or hummus and raw vegetables. Eat a rainbow! Try cherry tomatoes, carrots, cucumber and yellow or orange peppers. Keep tomatoes out of sandwiches. They’ll make them soggy! Choose natural yoghurt and add some fruit. Try and vary foods each day – think outside the sandwich box! For inspiration, look at www.schoolfoodtrust.org.uk/schools/projects/ packed-lunches/packed-lunch-ideas

Starting

SCHOOL…

A child’s first day at school should be a day of happy memories as your little one skips confidently into the classroom with a wave. But the reality might be a little different.

S

TARTING SCHOOL is a huge event in the life of a family. None of us wants to be the parent dropping off the clingy, tearful child so we offer some tried and tested tips to make those first days as stress-free and enjoyable as possible. Work with the school to prepare your child for their new school. You will be invited to visit, usually in the term before, and have the chance to meet the teachers and the other pupils. This helps ease the children into the life of the classroom and gives them the chance to make a few friends before they start. It may seem obvious, but make sure that your child gets a good night’s sleep and is up in time to have a relaxed breakfast before heading to school. In this way they will adjust and look forward to the day ahead. You don’t want a tired and grumpy child who has been rushed out of the house at the last minute. Having a set routine when you arrive at school. Try to arrive a few minutes early. This will give you time to help your child to hang up their coat and put their belongings away. Some schools will allow you to stay for a few minutes and encourage the children to start to play. Others will want all the children to go and sit together for the register, or line up outside and come in as a class. Stick to your school’s system.

If you sense your child feels uneasy at drop off, focus on the positive. Ask to see a project or other activity which he or she has been working on. When it is time to say goodbye, do it positively. Don’t sneak off! Leave them with a few reassuring words about how much fun they are going to have and that you will be back to collect them later. When you pick your child up at the end of the school day, praise them for something that they did well that morning like finding their coat peg, or changing out of their shoes without help. Focus on the positive, not that they cried a little. Most children settle into the routine of school within the first few weeks, but if your child continues to have trouble adjusting, set up a meeting with the teacher to discuss how you can work together. Follow the guidance offered. Your child’s teacher has the same priority as you – a happy, settled pupil who is ready to find out how much fun learning can be!

Soft Play NEWS… Schools invited to a Soft Play WORKOUT!

Two of our favourite soft play centres are offering schools FREE educational visits as part of a campaign to support a healthy lifestyle. The idea is to provide ‘exercise in disguise’ as part of the Change4Life campaign. Both Crazy Tykes in Wetherby and Polka Dot Kids in Garforth have signed up to the Play4Life schools challenge. Schools are invited to a FREE group play session between 15th – 30th September. The visit will be split into 2 stages – the Pedometer Challenge, and a look at Healthy Eating. All children will receive a certificate for taking part. “At the end of the Pedometer Challenge, we will be able to see who has covered the furthest distance and burned the most calories,”says Tracy Prudhoe from Crazy Tykes. If you want YOUR school to take part in the challenge, get in touch with the soft play centre nearest you. www.crazytykes.co.uk • 01937 541007 www.polkadotkids.co.uk 0113 232 0955

Baby Ballet at Little Bees! Popular North Leeds soft play Little Bees is hosting Baby Ballet sessions on a Thursday afternoon. The classes are held in the party rooms and places are filling up fast. “It’s great to have the Baby Ballet team here,”says Georgina Allison from Little Bees. “Parents can do their class and then stay and play for £1, while they catch up over a coffee.” Little Bees Play and Party is based at Seacroft Trade Park on Coal Road. www.littlebeesplay.co.uk 0113 232 9822

Toddler morning at the Clubhouse Kids Clubhouse in Horsforth is launching toddler mornings from September. These craft sessions will run in the party rooms and give little visitors the chance to take a break from the challenge of the soft play. It follows a really successful Summer where owner Mark Nithsdale and his wife Christina have seen the centre packed whatever the weather. They’ve been delighted with the positive feedback. “Parents are happy to come and sit and have a nice cup of coffee with friends,”says Mark. Parties continue to be hugely popular with themes ranging from Teddy Bears Picnic, Boogie Picnic to Laser Tag Parties for older children. What’s on Halloween HALF TERM WIN a Stockeld Season Card on pg 17

Wrap up warm and head out this half term. We’ve chosen some of our favourite holiday haunts for Halloween fun. From pumpkin carving to broomstick making, there is something for everyone.

HALLOWEEN at STOCKELD PARK 22nd – 31st October

A great week of half term fun to kick start the new season at this award winning attraction. Meet the Enchanted Forest’s new arrivals on a spooky treasure hunt, join a pottery painting session and prepare to be scared on Fright Night (29th – 31st October). The Halloween production by Atmosfear Entertainment is a great alternative to ‘trick or treating’, but be warned. It’s only for the brave! “We’re encouraging families to come dressed up in spooky clothes and visit our haunted woods,”says Amy Thornton from Stockeld Park. “As night falls in the Enchanted Forest, it will be like walking through a live ghost train!” For a gentler woodland walk, there’s the hugely popular Theatre in the Woods on Thursday 28th October. This dusk time production is great for pre-school children and a chance to see theatre, and the woods come to life. As well as being Chief Christmas Elf, Amy has also turned pumpkin farmer this year. Out in Stockeld’s grounds she’s lovingly nurtured a field of pumpkins which will be ripe and ready for half term visitors to pick and carve. Meanwhile behind the scenes, she’s incharge of a team of elves busily wrapping the 5,000 presents needed in Santa’s Grotto come November. It’s hard work but lots of fun and this year, Stockeld is passing some of that Christmas spirit back to you, the customer. “We’ve listened to our visitors and realised how many visit Stockeld Park time and again over the season,”says Amy. “So to give them something back we’ve launched a Season Card.” The Stockeld Card will give discounts in the shop and café, as well as unlimited access to all your favourite attractions. There’s also a 10% discount on special events. To buy your Stockeld Card, call 01937 586 101 • www.stockeldpark.co.uk

AUTUMN GLORY at HAREWOOD 24th – 31st October As Autumn leaves fall, the team at Harewood House have a programme of events to keep your little ones busy this half term. Follow the scarecrow trail, try some leaf and vegetable printing or even make your own broomstick at the many craft sessions going on over the half term break. Join a Twilight Tale walk through the grounds of Harewood on either Tuesday 26th or Thursday 28th October and enjoy story telling and lantern making. The walk begins at 3pm and you’ll need to book your place – it promises to be popular. For grown ups , there’s an Autumn Farmer’s market. Stock up on some seasonal goodies including regionally reared meat and Harewood grown vegetables. You’ll find me at the broomstick making session – my husband’s suggestion! www.harewood.org • 0113 218 1000

TWITCHY WITCH at the THACKRAY MUSEUM 23rd & 24th, 26th – 28th October Sessions at 11am – 1pm, and 2 – 4pm A feast of storytelling and pumpkin carving down at the Thackray. Learn how to make a ghoulish jackal lantern out of your pumpkin or a magic wand to guard you against the terrifying tales of Mary Bateman – the Yorkshire Witch. Listen to the ghastly ghost tales if you dare! It’s a great museum with lots to see and secure parking on site. www.thackraymuseum.org 0113 244 4343

THE FARMERS CART 25th – 30th October Brave a trip to North Yorkshire to visit The Farmer’s Cart. Based just off the A64 to Scarborough, it’s a great day out with the bonus of a fantastic café serving seasonal snacks like pumpkin soup and

sturdy stews. Take a trip on the tractor to a nearby field to collect your own pumpkin before carving it. There’s face painting, a spooky maze and a host of other Halloween activities to make the journey worth while. Arrive early as this is a modest venue which gets busy. www.thefarmerscart.co.uk 01904 499 183
